5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book is a great one for a tatter in any level. What I like the most about the book is that you can find some techniques that are not very commonly use in Tatting and at least a pattern to practice that technique. Also some patterns "play" with beads, something that makes tatting more beautiful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tatting Book
This is a wonderful book.It is very inspiring. You find it hard to decide what to tat first. This is one of the best tatting books I have seen in awhile.Well worth purchasing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Falls short of expectations
While this book shows incredible detail in the images of lacework, it does not provide a single word on the sources or dates of the lace pieces. This book will provide inspiration for lacemakers or designers (not patterns!) Historical costumers or reproduction lacemakers who require documentation for their work will wish to pass by this resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last a book for skilled lacemakers
I know and appreciate very much Ms. Grafton's books. Being a lacemaker, a crocheter and an embroiderer, I really love the variety of laces presented in this book. Antique prints, drawings and photographs bring us manyexamples of historical laces. Needlelace plus Bruges, Venetian, Milanese,Teneriffe, Battenberg laces and Square-net embroidery are all presented inthis book. Although very appealing to the eye, it could disappoint thenovice lacemaker, because there are no instructions, prickings or diagrams;only a wealth of exquisitely detailed laces from many ages and countries.Anyway, it's a good source for advanced lacemakers (embroiderers,crocheters...): they can draw inspiration from those patterns to developtheir own designs and prickings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful, historically accurate patterns
an unbelievable reprint of phenominal patterns- crucial for any historical costumer, and equally wonderful for anyoen who just digs rennaisance art.

4-0 out of 5 stars only for the purists
This book is a reproduction of woodblock printed patterns. No instructions, wobbly diagrammes and little information. However, it's the sort of book I love. The pictures are exquisite, and I couldn't wait to get started on some of the lace. The first half of the book is reticella, the second filet. I sit and look at the drawings for hours, amazed at the complexity of one and the efficiency of the other. Again, it isn't a very big book, but for those of you interested in original, historic lace design, I highly recommend it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very few projects
The cover is deceptive in that it shows several lace doilies, but what you see on the cover is what you get in the book. Most of the stitch patterns are found in most pattern books. The only part of the book that is truly unique for the experienced lace knitter is the few lace edging patterns. Not worth 17.95 for those few patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lacy Knitting of Mary Schiffmann
This book is very well put together.I have been knitting for 20 years and love the patterns in this book. There are a number of advanced patterns for more experienced knitters, something difficult to find these days, and a number of simpler patterns fornovice knitters.I only wish it had more patterns and hope that they will come out with a second book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This LaceKnitting Book First
I highly recommend this book as either a first lace knitting book or to add to a collection because it is both helpful and beautiful. I have purchased other lace knitting books but because of their complexity I hadnever used them to produce a piece of lace. The author of this book, MaryShiffmann, taught lace knitting and includes in the book a list of projectsdesigned to help novice lace knitters develop their skills. I was able topick up this book and without other help teach myself to knit lace. Alsohelpful is that all the patterns are charted. The book is an interestingmix of the author's personal history, discussions about lace, and lessons. It also contains an excellent variety of patterns (from easy to complex),projects and suggestions. I plan on working my way through many of thepatterns. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty tatted snowflakes
Here we have a collection of snowflakes which uses a fairly varied range of techniques including tatted beadwork. The book includes basic instructions for tatting and the patterns are written in longhand with no diagrams.
4-0 out of 5 stars These tatted snowflakes were are a delight to find.
The individual photographs are close enough to count the stitches without using the written patterns. The designs range from beginning to advanced skills.Instructions about the process of tatting are clear and easy tofollow. It can be difficult to learn to tat from a book, but notimpossible. There are two 2-dimensional snowflakes and a few with beadsand ribbons, perfect for holiday decorations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the winter season!
I bought this book last fall and used it constantly throughout the holiday season, and I plan to use it to make more snowflakes during the remaining winter months. The patterns are varying, although I would like to have seena few more and some that were more like actual snowflakes. You can tatthese patterns in almost any size thread and add beads, glitter, sparklythread to make them more lifelike, and they make great ornaments for theChristmas tree or decorations for windows or gifts. They're also nice totat during the hot summer months when you think you're going to suffocatefrom the heat and humidity ; ) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars whimsical history
This is the first (to my kowledge) attempt to write a serious history of lace and lacemaking. It is an enjoyable read with many lovely illustrations. Do be warned, however, that there is some rather whimsicalhistory between these pages studded amongst the accurate bits. Still, thereis much good information in this book, and a wealth of wonderfulillustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good one for the tatting library
This book has some great basic patterns. It's always a good standard to go back to when I need a quick pattern for something. The patterns are written long-hand, but are fairly easy to follow. The majority of the patterns are easy enough for beginner to intermediate tatters. Advanced tatters can modify the patterns to eliminate some cutting and tying. Overall a very good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely tatting patterns
This book is an absolute delight containing a huge selection of patterns by Monica Hahn. There are angels, bells, Christmas trees, snowflakes, doilies, bookmarks, collars, all sorts of things. Most are worked and shown in white, probably to facilitate the black and white photography used in the book, and the patterns are imaginative and interesting to work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Angels and Other Tatting Patterns
I'm just learning how to tat and found these patterns easy to follow.I'm working my way through the book with plans to make them all.I haven't learned to use a shuttle yet and am doing them with the needle tatting method and have been able to adapt the patterns without too much difficulty. ... Todos los diseños son maravillosos. La calidad del papel es regular. Se verían mejor en papel satinado. Dibujos poco nitidos.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reprint of an early tatting book
This lovely book is a reprint of the Priscilla Tatting Book 2 published in 1915.There are dozens of patterns all photographed in black and white. Most of the photographs are clear and it will be possible to reproduce the illustrated items quite easily provided you make a careful study of the instructions. The pictures are not always well arranged in relation to the text so you might want to photocopy the picture and text and paste them together if you are working a pattern in the book where the illustration and text have been separated.
4-0 out of 5 stars For needle tatters, too...
For a brand-new, self-taught needle tatter such as I, this book has been great. Many of the motifs and insertions are very elegant when finished (the photos by no means do them justice), and beginners through experienced tatters can derive a great deal of satisfaction from using these patterns. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book
This is an excellent place for anyone interested in bobbin lacemaking to start.I especially like the variety of techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant little book
The book is practical and very easy to follow. The diagrams are clear. The use of color helps to avoid some of the confusion that arises when you first learn the craft and aren't quite sure what to make out of theinstructions in front of you, and how it relates to what lies within yourhands. Book is full of useful tips and hints.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to a beautiful art
This was one of the first books I found when I took up bobbin lace nine years ago. Filled with attractive, simple patterns, clear diagrams, and many helpful hints, this book remains a favorite of mine. This is awonderful resource, especially if you don't have a teacher. Editorial Review

The mere mention of lace conjures up images of Victorian opulence, sumptuous weddings, elegant lingerie. Formerly a costly handmade indulgence, lace is nowadays an affordable luxury, an easy way to add beautiful enhancements to clothing and accessories. Contrary to popular belief, the art of sewing with lace (known as heirloom sewing) is actually quite simple to learn, according to the author of this lovely book. She provides very detailed instructions on all the basics of working with lace, from sewing and gathering to mitering and shaping to mastering the embroidery stitches that perfectly complement the lace adornments. And she presents 40 attractive step-by-step projects (complete with good color photos and diagrams) in five categories: weddings, christenings, gifts, clothing, and Christmas. In addition to pretty variations on the usual lace-trimmed items (sachets, pillows, camisoles, handkerchiefs, christening gowns) there are full directions for items less commonly made from scratch, such as baby booties, a bride's garter, padded clothes hangers, and a kimono dressing gown. Complete gridded patterns and templates are included for most projects; other items utilize store-bought garments as a basis for embellishment. --Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacemaking in English
Fro many years this book was the only book on Lacemaking available in English and we are so grateful for it. But almost all the English language books available today use a different method from this one, and it would be confusing to start with this method and then have to change when buying any other English book. It might be better to start with the method you will continue with. 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow
This is the book I used to get started with making bobbin lace. The directions for the patterns start out with excruciatingly exact and precise details. As you move farther into the book, the directions assume a certain level of experience and become less detailed. That's okay, by the time you get to those lessons, you already know what a half-stich and cloth stitch are and no longer need that level of detail.I heartily recommend this book to all of my students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I used to get Magic Crochet pattern books years ago, that only had doilies.Later on they added other crochet patterns, scarves, sweaters, etc. which steered me away from them.I have not been able to find a doily pattern book with a visual pattern until Pineapple Lace: with complete diagrams.I would recommend to anyone who crochets, beginner or expert. It is so much easier to look at the pattern instead of having to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A collection of crochet patterns and instructions for intermediate to advanced practitioners
Now in a newly revised edition, Pineapple Lace With Complete Diagrams is a collection of crochet patterns and instructions for intermediate to advanced practitioners. Each stunning design is shown in a full-color photograph and has instructions for its creation written in crochet shorthand alongside a detailed black-and-white pattern diagram. The finished projects include centerpieces and doilies, textured lace, tablecloths, cushions, and runners. An appendix includes brief instructions with diagrams displaying symbols and techniques used in the instructions, and tips for finishing crochet lace neatly. While prior familiarity with basic crochet steps is advised, the intricate patterns and creations here presented make Pineapple Lace With Complete Diagrams a confidently recommended resource for experienced crocheters to create beautiful decorations and handmade gifts.
