4-0 out of 5 stars A nice place to start
This book is great for beginners, who are unfamiliar with some of the different types of lace. Although no lace is gone into in depth, there is enough in each part to get you started and understand the differences. The illustrations are very clear, and I found the instructions quite easy to follow. It is only a little book, though, so don't expect too much. The one thing that really delighted me was the chapter on netting - how the fishermen used to do it. There Have been many times when I've searched for information on this topic and have come up empty. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars LACE EDGING
The subtitle for this book should be "A Victorian Notebook of Knited Lace Edging Patterns. With only a few exceptions the patterns are for edging only with no all over lace patterns.

3-0 out of 5 stars basics only
This is a basic book of edgings mainly, with one or two whole patterns. But if you do like some historical content of your stitches, you might really enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars fresh and inspiring
This book contains designs I had not witnessed before.Definitely inspiring and occasionally unusual. If you are tired of the mundane lace patterns then this book is for you.It has traditional appearing projects as well as contemporary pieces.I found it a wonderful addition to my references.

5-0 out of 5 stars 50 easy lace patterns
Claire Burkhard designed the lace patterns in this book to be easy--that is they don't take a lot of bobbins and the results are quick and dramatic. When I first browsed through the book I wasn't terribly impressed, but when I needed an attractive but not too difficult project to make while demonstrating lacemaking, I realized that her boook had several really good choices. The diagrams and prickings are clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought this book and immediately made some of the tassels.
My husband and I went on a trip to England. One day going through the Cotswolds we both saw a beautiful red tassel hanging in one of the shops. Then 3 days before going back to the States, I thought this is a very handson creative country, maybe there is a book for making tassels that I couldtake home. I checked with the Canterbury bookstore and YES there was a bookavailable for the same price as the tassel we had seen in the Cotswolds.Ipurchased the book and read it on the plane home.It had the bestexplanations and I created a red tassel as soon as I got home.In the bookare also discriptions and photos of the tools needed.I wrote a letter toAnna and she sent a list of supplies that could be ordered from her. Shewas so helpful by mail. I have since made tassels for wedding gifts, teachers of my children, birthdays and for home decor. It has given megreat creative pleasure, and of all the tassel books that I havecollected...."The Tassels Book", is still my all time favoritethat I come back to if there is a question on how to do something.I havesince discovered other United States sources for supplies and threadsthanks to Anna Crutchley's detailed discriptions in her book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Book Wonderful Instructions a bit Retro Tho
This is a great book for the beginning tassle maker. I agree with the other reveiwer who said the word 'fringe' does not belong in the title. The many illustrated instructions are very easy to follow ( shows how to make with machine and by hand) and the material lists are realistic items you can buy locally. My only complaint is it seems a bit dated, such as from the '70's with the color combinations and photos, of course that does not affect the usefulness of the book. Colors can be changed and photos are just for examples after all. It is still a GREAT book for learning and I am thrilled to have it but if you are looking for more contemporary designs I might recommend a Susan Dickens Book or something else more recently published.

4-0 out of 5 stars the word fringe should not be in the title
This is a very nice book if you are trying to learn about tassels -their history, how to make them, projects, how to use them. However, other than defining the term "bullion" fringe, if your interest was in learning how to make fringe as well as tassels, you will be out of luck, as was I.More comments from me are unnecessary because the other review is fair and comprehensive - I just thought other potential buyers should have this point clarified.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful workbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars The absolute best source for info!
After reviewing all of the books available on tassel making, this was the ONLY one I found with easy, illustrated instructions. There is some history, background, etc.--but reading from beginning to end will have youready to make the most decorative of tassels. It is a beautifulbook--almost coffe-table quality. The split pages which allow the reader topick and choose styles from many tassels to make an original design areeffective and clever. Great list of sources for materials, too---it's allthere!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for any tatter!
There are so few books written on the history of tatting, and this one book is a short but sweet synopsis of the origins and development of tatting over the past two hundred years. Pam Palmer has written a small book that's big on information, covering many aspects of tatting, from its relative, knotting, to modern achievements during the latter part of the twentieth century. This book is filled with interesting photographs of tatting work, shuttles and other illustrations that add to the easy-to-read text. A must-have for any tatter's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brief history of tatting.
Pam Palmer has written an outstandingly informative, especially for itssize, book on the history of tatting. Although longer books on tattinghistory have been written, this one gets the prize for being the mostaccurate. Most other authors confuse knotting with tatting as it used asimilar, albeit much larger, shuttle. There are even actual pictures ofknotting, so no one may ever confuse these again (knotting isn't evenlace). Ms. Palmer also correctly traces the development of tatting to theearly-mid nineteenth century, while other authors (including ElgivaNicholls, one of the more articulate writers on the subject) state thattatting originated as a method of finishing burial cloths in ancient Egypt! This last statement can be attributed to Lady Katherine Hoare, but it hasbeen quoted widely. There are many well-chosen illustrations, someespecially fine examples of tatting, beautiful shuttles and even a portraitof Mlle. Riego --the mother of modern tatting. All this makes for anexceptionally fine and enjoyable read. Enthusiastically recommended. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Neat...but Lacking an essential ingredient
I agree that this is a really neat book, and well worth the cost. You should have a basic foundation in knitting before you pick it up, however. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Lace knitting
This is a great book to help you get started in lace knitting if you already know how to knit. There are some really nice projects to do and it is explained well. Also, there are written and charted instructions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to start lace knitting, and will keep you going
This book has a section on the basics--such as how to read charted patterns, how do do edges on lace, and has a stitch pattern library for stitches and edgings. So you can learn about knitting lace and then use this book afterwards to design your own things. So you won't outgrow this book. There is also some knitting history included in the book, for fun readingRead more

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm keen to get going
As I haven't made tassels before, just been impressed by their elegant look, I decided to read the whole book first. I've now done that and I'm ready to start. This book is easy to read and understand and I feel confident that once I've tried a few times I will master these beautiful accessories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great "how-to" you won't outgrow
"Beginners" is in the title, but you won't give up the book when you gain experience. It's filled with tips, ideas, and shortcuts that make the learning experience fun and keep your interest high. Whether you want to make a simple tassel in fifteen minutes or develop a complex tassel as a project, reach for this book for instructions. This is the tassel book to buy first. You won't give it up.

4-0 out of 5 stars technique and referance book
It's a useful referance book for various techniques. This book shows many ways to create a tassel (cord/woodheads/ect), not just one tassel withslight variations and additions to it.I found the basic tassel diagramconfusing as a beginner, it looks hand drawn. The written instructions aregood.I also like the descriptions of threads and how they affect thetassels shape, movement, and texture. The tassels are plain, but the infois good! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for inspiration
If you're looking for patterns and techniques you can take right off the page and put on your cloth, you'll be disappointed. The projects illustrated are too frou-frou for my tastes to do 'as is' (and unless your tastes run towards gobs of Victorian embellishments, probably yours too) but it gave me ideas how to combine stitches into designs. This book also has instructions on how to do many gathered flowers with wider or wired ribbon. In addition to flowers by alphabet (including some unusual choices like caladiums), there are instructions on how to make decorative initials; something I haven't seen before. Each project picture is shown in a wide shot, then a close up, and a drawn diagram the same size as the close up, so you can easily see the details, and what goes where. As a modestly experienced embroideress, I will use this book mostly for inspiration when dreaming up my own designs.P.S.I'm surprised they didn't use Zantedeschia (calla lilies) for the letter Z!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not For Beginners
Don't let the title fool you - this book is not for beginners.I was expecting a sampler or sample page of various types of stitches along with their names and step by step instructions on how to create the stitches.Instead, I got a book that shows a number of different projects that showcase a specific letter of the alphabet - all 26 of them - A-Z.An attempt is made to match each letter of the alphabet with a flower and create a piece that showcases that flower. The index lists a total of 18 stitches amongst all of the flower names.Unfortunately, you will have to leaf through the book to look at each stitch to see if it is the one you want to learn how to make. The instructions are then sketchy at best, sometimes showing only the completed stitch and how a number of them combine to make the flower.I am selling my book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An ABC's Guide to Ribbon Embroidery
If you have never done ribbon embroidery, you might want to choose another book for your first instruction book. But if you already have some experience, this book offers inspriation as well as guidance. There's notmuch in the way of basic information, such as choosing fabrics or ribbons, but each letter of the alphabet offers a new example of doing ribbonmonograms as well as illustrated step-by-step instructions for variousstitches and flowers. They have to stretch things a little on some letters(even THEY couldn't think up any flowers that start with X). Every letteralso features a full color photograph of the stitches/flowers used for thatletter, as well as a multi-color stitch guide to follow. While I haven'tused any of their guides "as is," I have found their projectsinspirational. The instructions for stitches easy to understand and thealphabetical organization of stitches and flowers helpful in planning myown projects. ... Read more

This book is compenium of stitches used in bobbin lace. Beautifully photographed and diagramed, it is meant for the lace designer. There are no patterns. The only thing I would do to improve this book is to give someindication what style of lace the stitches shown would be used in. Thataside, I love this book.
