4-0 out of 5 stars Compared to Encyclopedia of Crochet...
When I bought this book, I compared it to Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet. Both books contained many motif patterns, but the Crocheted Lace book went into a great deal more detail about the various ways you can connect the motifs. There's also a nice touch in the Crocheted Lace book about how to crochet your own buttons, which the encyclopedia does not have.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thread crochet
Subject of this book is thread crochet using the finer hooks and cottons. Index to the patterns and stitch patterns is included. Instructions use American terminology.Good photos in color of mostly white threads. Chapters include basics, filet crochet, motifs, joining motifs, Irish crochet, crochet imitating other types of lace, edgings, adaptation and finishing. No international symbols or charts using them which is a definite drawback limiting the book to readers of English only. Starts off with some interesting ideas about the history of crochet, but gives no references to other books on the subject such as Paludan. Turner is an authority and this book is recommended for the projects and ideas. Not a first purchase though. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a total find!!
Very pleased to find this book -although not for the complete beginner I think anyone would find this an inspirational read.Good photographs and terrific to find UK sources and outlets as a lot of good craft books seem to be USA only. The detailed instructions could be a little clearer but that is a minor complaint overall a good addition to anyones craft library!

4-0 out of 5 stars An advanced beauty
This is a either for advanced tassel makers OR a beautiful coffee table book.Anna's tassel's are completely inspiring and I saw this book first but saw right away I could not do it so I got the The Art of Tassel Making by Susan Dickens to teach me the basics.2-0 out of 5 stars Tassel Making
I totally agree with Cora.As a complete novice I found the pictures and instructions very hard to follow. The pictures are too small to see the detail (no, my eyesight is normal) and, as an example, the instructions for making a ruff give no explanation about what to do with the thread - a critical element!I worked it out for myself but with no help from the book.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair for the beginner
If you're a brand new lace maker, this should be a fairly good set of patterns. This is, however, a WORKBOOK, not a book: it is not bound in any way; it is only 9 loose legal-size pages of pictures and patterns, with a few pieces of cardstock on which to make your prickings. There are 18 patterns ranging from narrow and simple to a bit more complex. There are absolutely no instructions included, so a companion book of how to make lace would be a must. This is probably not a good investment for the more experienced lace maker, only a fair set of patterns for the price, and one could most likely do better to find patterns with stitches and instructions in a fully-bound book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A complete how-to of machine Needlelace
The book, Machine Needlelace and Other Embellishment Techniques, is very thorough on the materials needed, how-to, anddifferent projects . Thematerialscover everything fromthread and needles to fabric. The fabric detailsinvolve dyeing fabric and using different types of fabric. Very detailed! The how to's tell how to practice on samples and how to do complicated designs.I like lots of details for how to's, especially the pictures, whichit has. Picturesare next best to having a video or person show you.The projects are 2 piecedresses andvests and decorative home furnishing projects-- even pictures. The Lace is either floral, abstractcurved designs, orapplique combinations. It is a very complete and thorough book. That's why I ranked it a 5 star!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good All Around Book for the Beginner
As another reviewer stated, this book would be a good place for a beginner to start their lace adventure. The author begins with a little lace history and an explanation of the tools used in lace making. She then goes on to provide a tutorial on each of the basic lace techniques.Using this book and following the author's directions, I have been able to make my own lace "cookie" type pillow and a cylindrical lace pillow. I have worked through a number of the tutorials and did not find them "too wordy". :)
4-0 out of 5 stars A good, solid beginner's manual
The strongest point of this book, in my opinion, is the wonderful gallery of modern laces shown to inspire the new lacemaker. I really don't care for most of the patterns in this book, but that is no reason why you woulddislike them. Still, the diagrams are clear, the instructions are fine(although a little wordy on occasion), and there are instructions formaking several kinds of pillows. This is a good, solid reference which Iwould reccomend particualrly to the new lacemaker on a budget. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book of small projects
This book contains pricking for the English alphabet. Each pricking is roughly 3" high. There are two sets of detailed instructions for each pricking, one with a simpler execution and one with a Milanese lace technique.I also saw some evidence of Withoff techniques being used. The instuctions are written out with a small annotated version of the pricking to note strategic points in the execution. It does not use the color coded graphs found in many continental books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tatting book with patterns for using beads
This lovely book contains a number of patterns, each of which uses a range of different techniques for tatting with beads. The book starts out by covering the range of ways in which beads can be added to tatting, how to get beads onto the thread, different types of beads to use and the birthstones and items associated with birthdays and anniversaries. She also provides a list of abbreviations and descriptions of special techniques such as block tatting and split ring work, and an interesting history appears in the introduction.
