3-0 out of 5 stars Truly inspirational!
Although this book is devoid of any prickings, patterns, or line drawings it is worth owning just for the sheer number (243 to be exact) ofbeautiful, close-up photos of antique laces. The photographs are quiteclear enough, I believe, that the advanced lacemaker should be able toreplicate many of the laces. And the novice lacer, like me, will enjoythumbing its pages and dreaming of future projects. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Learn Needle Tatting -- Step-by-Step
The presentation of pictures which accompanied the instructions are very clear. The written instructions are clear and straight forward.I would recommend this book to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needle tatting for the complete beginner
This book is aimed at the needle tatter who is picking up the tatting needle for the first time.It does not teach the 19th century method of tatting with needles which basically uses the needle as if it is a shuttle, but the method of forming double stitches on the tatting needle and pulling the needle through the stitches.Special needles are required for this lace which can be obtained from the author's online tatting lace shop, which is heavily promoted in the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars This book makes strange claims, but teaches good technique.
This book outlines a very easy system of needletatting. But it does makesome odd claims that I cannot verify. Mainly that needle tatting wasinvented in the mid-nineteenth century -- referring to Mlle. Riego Ipresume, who did not needle tat but tatted with needles (BIG difference!).That needle tatting is faster than shuttle tatting --not for me, sorry. Ialso found that even with the recommended needle/thread combinations thatmy needle tatting looked quite chunky compared to my shuttle tatting, andcertainly not as pretty. Many people like needle tatting though, and I hearit is good for people with disabilities. I guess it's just not my thing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rescuing a lost art

5-0 out of 5 stars Some lovely heart patterns
This book contains some very pretty heart designs. Many of the patterns are advanced and are considered difficult by any standards.Ms Dusenbury's pattern writing style is also not always clear, consisting of a combination of diagrams and text. However the photographs are very clear and if you are used to working with diagrammatical patterns it should not be too difficult to work out which part of the pattern refers to what.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tatting Hearts is a Wonderful Book of Patterns
I have to strongly disagree with "NickName12345's" review about this book.I was inspired to learn to tat 3 years ago after seeing a copy of Teri Dusenbury's "Tatting Hearts" book.I immediately bought the book and within two months had taught myself to tat (including the split ring technique which is used in this book). These heart designs are beautiful and original!!I was so thrilled that in just a short time I was able to give my husband a gorgeous tatted heart for Valentine's Day, which he still carries in his wallet.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Valentine's Day, other holidays . . .
the twelve heart designs in this book are all attractive, but they do involve split rings. If you haven't learned how to do split rings yet, then you'll want to master them before picking up this book. Most of the patterns are rather involved, but there are visual diagrams given to help you along the way. My favorite is the Heart Frame, great for framing a photo of a loved one or pet. I would have liked to see a few smaller, simpler patterns along with the complicated ones, but if you're looking for hearts, this is the book to buy. ... Read more

I have 2 copies of this book. One is doggeared and has my notes all over it, as to how long a project takes etc. The other one is more of a reference guide I turn to if I want a new project and no distractions from previous notes. 4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable
This reprint from the 1930's shows a various number of different types of wonderful irish crochet lace. Unfortunately the patterns do not always tell the right number of stitches and contain some mistakes. Only for veryexperienced crocheters! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading, but with some flaws
Let's hit the good things first. The author is a person of undoubted scholarship, reputation, and industry. He specializes in dendrochronology, the science of analyzing tree rings to ascertain the past. By doing so, Dr. Baillie has uncovered several patterns of altered climate within the past six millenia, the last about 536 A.D.That these events were catastrophic seems beyond argument.
5-0 out of 5 stars Science and Mythology
The author is a scientist who first lays out the scientific proof of major environmental events during the past 5,000 years using dendrochronology records (his expertise) compiled from around the world and ice cores from Greenland. After marshalling the evidence to establish the 'effects' he then goes on to speculate about the 'causes', looking at various sources such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and other tectonic events such as outgassing, finally moving on to near cometary misses and the associated debris as potential culprits.5-0 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by its cover!!!
This book contains incredibly important, scientific observations and conclusions, about the past few thousand years of Earth's history.Unfortunately, the publishers seem to have adorned this brilliant work of science with one of the silliest book jackets I've ever seen in my life.Let me just say right now that I have communicated with the author about this, and the book jacket was NOT his choice.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick, fun patterns
This book is fabulous.I have made several patterns with great results.I am new to bobbin lace and able to understand her simplified techniques and approaches. This is a "must have" for those looking for a modern approach to lace making. Fun, Fast, and Very Satisfying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific pattern book
The intent with this book is to provide the lacemaker with lots of simple, attractive patterns that work up quickly and easily. In this the author has succeeded very well. The style ranges from "cute" to"stunning", so there's something for everybody. A word tobeginners though: this book contains diagrams only, virtually no writteninstruction. This is not the book to try to learn lacemaking with. But onceyou've worked your way through a decent beginner's book, you should have noreal problem working any pattern in this book. This is a fave of mine forcoming up with lacey last-minute gifts and good patterns to demonstratewith. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lace in Fashion: From the 16th to the 20th Centuries
All of Pat Earnshaw's books are wonderful resouces in the study of laces and this book is a great find for the early days of lace making. The pictures are beautiful (with both color and black and white pictures). Thediscriptions are very clearly worded and tell what to look for in eachcentury, as well as how lace was used on clothing. There are also twoportraits that show young children holding fashion dolls of the 16th and17th century.I highly recomend this book to anyone who is interested inthe history of lace. ... Read more

I have her first book and let me tell you this book is like a second eddition to the first but better. She gets into 3d shapes and designs as well as uses different types of threads including silk. The edgings and mats are a continuation to her first book. She also gets into harder things for you to make. The baby shawl in this book is truely a beautiful pattern that anyone who makes lace would love to have included in their dollhouses. This book also has the section which shows you how to do each stitch which very rarely is found in other books. A must have for anyone into dollhouse bobbin lace making. ... Read more
