A nice place to start
This book is great for beginners, who are unfamiliar with some of the different types of lace. Although no lace is gone into in depth, there is enough in each part to get you started and understand the differences. The illustrations are very clear, and I found the instructions quite easy to follow. It is only a little book, though, so don't expect too much. The one thing that really delighted me was the chapter on netting - how the fishermen used to do it. I'm ordering my second copy!
My family and I have worn out the first copy.It is excellent -- well-written, fairly well organized, and easy to follow.We recommend it to anyone interested in making their own gear.

Mande, not Mende
The prior Mende reader is just looking in the wrong place--this book deals with Mande-speakers (Bamana, Malinke, etc.) of Mali and surrounding countries, and is an interesting delve into the whole question of caste in the area, as well as inherited occupations and compellingly beautiful creations.She brings out the lesser-studied arts of women, as well as the products of the leather-workers, which show trans-Saharan cross-influences and had an impact on much of West Africa.Carefully-considered and clearly-written academic work which is solid and extremely useful. As a MENDE from West Africa, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bookabout my tribe.....until I realized that the author wrote MANDE instead ofMENDE.I have tried in vain to find information on the MANDE tribe (as weare referred to by the author).I can't believe that in the author'squest, the name of the tribe is incorrect.I only hope it is my error! ... Excellent!
I've been making whips for 14 years and have every book in print on the subject of whips and plaiting. They all show braiding sequences and patterns, some better than others. However they all lack one thing. That is showing proper process and technique. David Morgan's book fills this void and does it extremely well. It is written so that someone with little or no plaiting experience can understand it and has some simple projects that will help to develope proper technique. This book doesn't show how to make whips and is not intended to do so. If you are a beginner this book is essential. If you've been plaiting for a while, you may learn something and refine your technique.

The Real Scoop on Leather Braiding
Even if you are a beginner, this book will show you how to braid simple projects quite quickly. Practice the methods in this book paying close attention to detail and you will soon have a quality product made of either precut lace, a skin, or a side of leather! Don't forget your reading glasses.
I really want to like this book. It appears to aspire to teach advanced techniques, but only teaches the very basics of braiding leather. While it does offer some techniques not directly taught in other books, such as Ron Edward's excellent "How to Make Whips", those offerings are rather meager. Read more

A complete guide to braiding horse tack.
Woolery has included a wide variety of braiding techniques and their application with regard to making horse tack. Although all of the examples are western-type tack, the pieces of tack described are useful to any horseman. THE Best In Subject
This book is worth more than it's monetary cost. Simply by the historical content so hard to find. I enjoyed reading it. The pictures are great and the fine examples are totally mindblowing. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning of "boots".

A lot of Good information
Gibby's "Primitive clothing of the Native Americans" contains a lot of good 'how-to' info on making traditional and not-so-traditional buckskin garments. What differentiates this book from others is that it is not geared so much at replicators who want to make things exactly like they can be proven to have been made (museum quality replications), but more at regular folks who want to make buckskin clothing, and may or may not want to follow traditional styles. ... This Book is a wonderful PART of a larger picture...
Mr. Beatie researched and wrote this book in the late 70's.I agree with other reviewers that there is some lack of information in certain areas.However, I urge those who treasure saddles for their artistry and historic value to forgive these criticisms and to see the book as it is--a beautifully presented depiction of the history of the saddle in the U.S. Bias
When I first read this book a few years ago, I was very dissapointed at the fact that Mr Beatie has not given credit to the true creator, the mexican horseman, of the so called "western saddle".I would rather recommend a study on saddles done by the Smithsonian Institite. Mr Russel's book, like many other books on western culture is full of bias.This book is not worth the price.
