5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonder of Knifemaking
This book has a lot in it, I am an absolute beginner but I like where Goddard is coming from. This book and his other are the best I have come across so far. If you like where his head is at you will enjoy and get a lot out of them, I have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Goddard Puts Me On Edge
Wayne Goddard is probably one of the top 10 hand-made knife makers in the United States. This book, however, was a somewhat disappointing rehash of his BLADE magazine articles of past years. There are sections of the book which are repeated verbatim on more than one page, and the disjointed collection of old articles is somewhat difficult to follow at times. On the other hand, the information that is presented clearly is very useful if the reader is interested solely in blade forging, as the stock removal method is almost entirely dismissed. Included is an excellent dissertation on the chemestry of steel.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information for bladesmiths
There is a lot of detailed information in this book, most of which are from ABS master smith Goddard's regular Q&A column from Blade magazine. As a bladesmith for more than 30 years, Goddard explains the theory and practice of his craft clearly and simply. The section on what happens to steel during hardening (quenching) and tempering is especially well done which plain old knife enthusiasts (non-metallurgists) will appreciate. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasing to the Eye
A book well done for the fan of Thomas Mann.It gives LOTS of detailed photos of all his work through the years, as well as an account of his life.I'm glad he gives acknowledgement for all the people who contributed to his success.Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Over 40 years of creative genius
This book displays a beautifully photographed representation of Thomas Mann's creative genius that is not to be missed. Thomas Mann is a true modern master and this book details his life's work and inspiration from the past three decades. From the use of non-precious metals, found objects, and objects that are created to look old, Thomas's highly recognizable industrial style is an inspiration to many, and he will be remembered for his contribution to the world of jewelry arts, for many years to come. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Apprentices
I recommend this book to any apprentice or student locksmith. But the title is misleading: "Locksmithing from Apprentice to Master."There's nothing in it for a master locksmith.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointed Reader
I'm co-owner of a locksmith shop, and am always on the lookout for good books for reference and to train new people. Usually TAB locksmith books are pretty decent, but "from Apprentice to Master" is weak. Itdoesn't have much to say its 300 plus pages. I don't see it as tootechnical at all. 4-0 out of 5 stars LOCKSMITHING From Apprentice to master
This book is great for beginner locksmiths already associated with locksmithing terms and theory.. if you know nothing about locksmithing, hold off on this book til later. This book covers all the basic duties alocksmith can preform and in basic detail the how to`s of locksmithing ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A survey of milling - not a how-to book
I was expecting a hands-on tutorial on the use of a vertical milling machine.Instead all I got was a nice novel complete with detailed photographs of the author's accomplishments. He is accomplished, he just doesn't tell us how he did any of it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful little book
Focused mainly on English table-top mills, and their use in making model engines, this book is a tad parochial. However, it will help the novice machinist learn about milling procedures and how to set up jobs. Particularly useful is a table of RPM recommended for different cutters on different materials. I think author's coments about milling machines willhelp the novice with the selection of a machine - what to look for. I personally found it very helpful - I am just learning how to use my Clausing mill and this book will help. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Few Nice Things, Mostly Not
There are a few nice pieces in this book but not enough to warrant a wholebook. There is one picture I spotted as beingidentical to a picture onanother page. Many of the items one could see by going to a Copper andBrass store that sells newitems. I now have the book, "Metalwork inEarly America : Copper and It's Alloys from the WinterthurCollection,". If youwant in-depth information on antique copper andbrass, I'm afraid you're going to have to go the money. This is what I was looking for when I bought this other book. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Referral Source
This paperback with glossy cover is a must for collectors inthe metalware field. It's strongest points are in the excellent and numerous photos presented (all of which are in color). ...Most people would find the prices paid for identical pieces to be much lower, but it is still a worthy effort.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit of Design Philosophy and Some Examples
I did not quite get what I was looking for in this book. Since I am looking for a place to build a BIG layout but have not yet found it, I thought I would learn about ways to start building now in a series of small blocks that could be transported to the new site when the time comes. There is some of that but that is not the basis of the book. Instead, it talks about an approach to designing a layout.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tony Koester continues to lead the way
Tony Koester continues to be THE most prominent driving force in Model Railroad Design today. He began where John Armstrong left off and continues to take the design phase of the hobby to new heights. "Building Blocks" is a concept that thousands of modelers have used for years, but until now, no one has ever compiled a true action plan for intergrating these ideas together to achieve a complete model.
2-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointed ! Not the most ideal for an experienced modeler
The book is well presented but lot of the coverage is very ambiguous and situational to real railroading not focused onthe aspects of model railroading. I would have expected to see more coverage of layout building, tips and trick, experiences from fellow modelers, but none of that kind to suit my pallate. Rather dissappointed, I must say. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Hardly anything other than a collection of French knives
The author is French. Most of the knives are French. Although the author makes a half-hearted attempt to include international knives, it is very feeble. The American made knives are overshadowed by the French ones, because, the author chooses, for some reason (I wonder why) to include American made knives that are mostly inferior to the industry's standards. Not all of them are inferior, that's why I gave this book two stars instead of one. But the vast majority are. The French knives, on the other hand, are often far better made, or more exquisite. This is peculiar, because France has far worse knife laws than the U.S., and thus would have far less of that sort of knife. And it does. This book instils a false sense of French dominance in the cutlery industry, by giving grossly disproportionate view of the world of knives. Most of the French knives are also quite old, giving the author another chance to proclaim the vast collectability of French knives compared to other knives. If you're from France, this book will be music to your ears; otherwise don't buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done coffee table knife book
This is a collection of color photos of knives from around the world and of the last 200 or so years. As a knife collector and seller I will buy any book with knife and collectable in the title.I am usually rather harsh on books that aren't what they should be.This is not one of them.Nice pictures, most completely doped (the background is white) so there is nothing to compete with the knife.Nothing in here about collecting, buying, selling or values.Any custom knifemaker should have one of these, there are a bunch of good ideas in there.Having this book can save you tons of money travelling to museums both here and on the continent; which of course you can spend on more knives.I didn't find anything in this book that I wouldn't want to own. ...
