5-0 out of 5 stars An Exhaustive treatment on artmetal techniques
I took a chance on what the first two reviewers on this site said about this book and bought it unseen. Thanks to Oppi Untracht and those two people I have purchased a book without parallel. Their descriptions are both honest and accurate. In fact the title and sub-title of this book is both accurate and understated.5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very thorough encyclopeadia of metalworking
I have always regarded this as the ultimate reference book for metaworkers. It covers many different facets of metalworking in a very clear way with lots of good photographs. How can this important book be out of print?

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written encyclopedic introduction to art metal work
This book, printed in 1968 and reprinted in 1975 is a classic text with over 440 well written pages on metalworking processes and another 60 pages of detailed tables, charts, indexes et cetera. It provides a mini-course in the history, philosophy, anthropology and technology of art metal working.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Art Deco Collector's MUST HAVE!
Mr. Linz honors the Machine Age of Chrome and Bakelite! All the major 'players' are carefully given a great backgound and history in a chapter devoted to the companies themselves, then on to the good stuff! Devoting his written information to 'just the facts', Mr. Linz provides a very large wealth of information in a minimum amount of space. He consistently focuses on the items he is presenting, and with the color and B/W pictures provides a large and impressive array of the 'Age'. This book provided me with data I had not seen or heard of before, and as I consider myself a 'serious' and 'advanced' collector of some of these items, it is a VERY helpful resource. Thank you, Mr. Linz!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on the subject.
This is a very well done book. The pictures are very good and the text well written. Jim Linz has apparently done his homework because there is much important information to be found here. There are catalog reprints andgreat background information on both the major companies and the designersinvolved. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth purchasing!
Information as to necessary materials, techniques, & directions for individual projects was thorough & easy to understand.Furthermore, the photos of finished projects were inspiring. It was obvious that this book had been written by a person who thoroughly knew her craft, rather than by a "dabbler" who was quickly throwing out a half-baked book for a popular market.I was extremely pleased with this book, as opposed to another one I ordered by B.M.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
This book has clear, detailed instructions to complete some lovely projects. As a newcomer to embossing I found the clear instructions, technical tips and excellent photographs make me want to get started straight away and have given me confidence to have a go. I would recommend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book
This is a good book but note the title - "The Armourer and His Craft" ... the title is NOT "How to Craft Armour From the XIth to the XVIth Century" - I think a lot of people here got the wrong idea and were disappointed.
3-0 out of 5 stars Ffoulkes - Armourer and his Craft
More of a historical record - with reprints of armour related period text, invoices, and treaties. A few photos of armour and period engravings. An interesting read for the armour historian - not a 'how to' or 'techniques' text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource on Armour
I don't mind the fact that this book is a little dated. I enjoyed the descriptions and illustrations and learned a few things that I hadn't known already. Although ffoulkes is a little biased about the types of armour he prefers, he none the less presents information and construction elements that apply to all harnesses. There are references in french that aren't translated, and several erroneous footnotes that are untraceable and confusing. Besides it's downfalls, there are excellent points to the book: easy to read, easy to follow, and full of tidbits you'll be pleased to rediscover when you pick it up for a second or third time. It is definately worth the inexpensive price, and should be on the reference shelf of armour enthusiasts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
(...)This is not a book for a beginner; she doesn't focus extensively on the "basics" - looping, bending, and wrapping wire, although she does give some instruction on how to do these things. For that, I would buy "All Wired Up" by Mark Lareau. But there are some very unique designs in this book, that I feel make it worth adding to your library, if you're a wire wrapper and already have some experience.I have been making one of her wire snowflakes every year now, and give them out as Xmas presents. (picture here at: http://webpages.charter.net/garyb444/Snowflake%20008.jpg).
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing: interesting projects, poor visuals
I bought this book on the strength of its projects - it contains some interesting designs that range from jewelry to tiny baskets to ornaments for the home or Xmas tree.My main complaints about the book are the abysmal quality of the photos and the incompleteness of the directions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete directions hamper completion of projects!
The directions on many of the projects are incomplete. For instance, they tell you to roll a spiral that's a certain number of inches in length when completed, but not how much wire it takes to make such a spiral. Through trial & error and wasting much wire, you can figure it out, but a how-to book should include all the details. And the clasps they tell you to make are ugly and weak.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cowboy Spurs gets an A-
Well the book is an in depth look at the famous spur makers and some not so famous and the history of Spurs in the New World. Some minor inconsistencies in information about when a maker or company marked their products. I enjoyed the extensive list of little known makers and their style points in the back of the book. If your looking to see the makers marks in a book; well... be satisfied with the history and folklore and construction. The omission of showing historical documentation of the maker marks of the makers reviewed is a glaring one. Cowboy Spurs...is informative and chock full of biographical tidbits on the best of the best custom and production spur makers. I bought Cowboy Spurs and Their Makers but then I ordered Cowboy Bits and Spurs by Joice Overton which is more helpful with Identification and styles; a Schiffer book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great info, but very limited use for the hobbyist
this is a great book, you will see several professional knife makers work their magic & turn out beautiful high end folders.
3-0 out of 5 stars It might have been a nice book.
Just got a copy of this for Christmas; latest printing I believe.4-0 out of 5 stars About par for the many books on this subject
I am a knife knut. There are three "make a knife" sections to this book. The authors - Lake, Centofante, and Clay are each well respected knifemakers. For a general idea of what goes into knifemaking this book is about average for the "let's write a book for our fans who aspire to make their own" book. It gives methods that each contributor goes through (learned after painstaking years of trial and error, hands on work). The text gives a pretty good description of each artists work, start to finish. As in most of the books in this price range and size, the pictures are not very helpful. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous reference for the collector of Tiffany flatware..
This is a terrific book! It covers the complete spectrum of Tiffany silver flatware from 1845 to 1905. It's lavishly illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and original pattern drawings. It covers the full-line patterns, the not-full-line patterns, and the custom patterns made for the likes of the Vanderbilts and the Hearsts. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This book is a superb work. The authors have filled a major void in the literature concerning the history of American decorative arts. The quality of the research and textual insights make this book essential reading foranyone interested in Tiffany silverware or the latter 19th century ofAmerican craftsmanship. The photography is so magnificent that I repeatedlyfind myself leafing through this book to admire the beauty of this flatwareof a bygone era.A great read...a beautiful coffee table book...a classicin every respect. ...
