3-0 out of 5 stars Cake Wire?
I loved the pictures in the book, and was looking forward to try to make some of the items. I have searched the internet trying to find cake wire no.22 that the author of the book says is the best wire to use, but I haven`t found anything called cake wire. When in comes to the thread used, I would think you would get a more realistic look using waxed linen cord, as I know some other wicker artists use. I guess I just have to try to find some other kind of wire that can be used...

4-0 out of 5 stars Where do I get the Materials?
Real excited when I glanced through this book.Beautiful pictures and instrutions.Where do I purchase the materials to make these little treasures?CAKE WIRE No 22....says they are available from "cake decoration specialist".No one knows what I am taking about locally, nor can I find it on the Internet.MOUNT BOARD -- what thickness? Is it cardboard, foamboard or what?THREADS -- Twilley's Lyscordett No. 5.crochet cotton.Unable to find locally or on the Internet.I assume it is a 3 ply cotton crochet thread. AUNT LYDIA'S FAST FIVE may be comparable. Book is published in England, I was unable to communicate via the Internet with WickerCollections.com-- Shelia Smith site for sales of Wicker. I have USA Oregon e-mail "barshere@earthlink.net". would appreciate any information or help on locating these products. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wide survey, now outdated
This book appears to be a reprint of a book released in 1981. It covers a wde variety of useful subjects. However, the examples shown and many of the techniques and materials described in the book are dated. Modeling techniques and standards have advanced well beyond this book.Best to leave this one for the used book aisle.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introductory book on painting in miniature.
The book is an introduction to painting miniatures (portraits, landscapes, animals, still life scenes) in oils, watercolours and gouache. I found it very useful in discovering the techniques used and being able to followexamples given by a number of expert British miniaturists.

Editorial Review

What an absolutely perfect craft Frank Cooper has come up with in these miniature needlepoint Persian, Caucasian, and Turkish carpets! They are simple, beautiful, unusual, and portable. The miniatures are typically between 6-9 inches in width and 10-16 inches in length, and though they are quite detailed, the stitches are not impossibly tiny. Cooper uses a #18 canvas (18 stitches per 2.5 cm), which allows these little jewels to work up surprisingly quickly. The instructions are plainly written; the charts are the book's only real drawback, as they must really be enlarged on a copier to be usable by the average needleworker. But the patterns are authentic, taken from rugs Cooper has studied closely in his travels, and the color photographs and the historical background he adds to each rug's description are alone worth the price of the book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for lovers of oriental carpets...
I couldn't resist this book! I love oriental carpets, but of course they're expensive and require a lot of space. This way I can have the designs I love, in miniature. The rugs he chose are lovely, and the designs easy to follow, plus he provides the color numbers for the yarn if you want to use his colors. (This is particularly nice if you live overseas like I do and need to order the yarn.) I would have liked some hints on how to come up with designs for other rugs, but it's easy to figure out by looking at his designs. The book is obviously for a niche market, but if you like oriental carpets and needlepoint, I doubt there's anything out there quite like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Miniature Antiques
This book is a wonderful introduction not just to making miniature rugs inneedlepoint, but also to the subject of Oriental rugs. Each of the 24 rugsis well-photographed so that you can appreciate the detail of the originalweaver's design. There is also a clear pattern for use in doing yourdesign that will copy clearly, as well as suggested colors to authenticallyrecreate the design. But the author also provides commentary on thehistory, themes and features in the rugs he included so that the readeralso learns something about what makes these rugs repre- sentatives of thecultures of their makers.I really enjoyed this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars glorious patterns
I don't do needlepoint but used one of the Persian rug charts for a bead knit bag.The charts are big, no small projects here, but they are striking and wonderfully detailed.Really striking color photos. ... Read more

Gave several ways of setting up different village and train scenes.Have not tried them yet but am looking forward to it

4-0 out of 5 stars Village Display Tips: Volume 2
This is a great book to give you some ideas in displaying your villages. It has nice clean pictures and some cool tricks to make water, scenes, ect. The only downfall for me was I wish it had a larger section on mixing trains with village pieces. It does contain a nice chapter on this, but it would be nice to see more info. If just village tips your after, then this is the book for you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Little dissapointed
The book was just ok. I thought it was way over priced, I expected to get lots of ideas for building a fabulous display along with directions. There were a few ideas and the discriptions could have been better.I will still use the book and ideas but had I looked at the book before buying it sight unseen, I probably wouldn't have bought it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dollhouse Furnishing for the Bedroom and Bath
This is one of the best books I have purchased as a beginning miniaturist ever.It covers the "nuts to bolts" on how to create just about everything in the bedroom and bath...my only regret...I haven't found a book for the other rooms!I would recommend this book to anyone from the beginner to the pro's.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Most of the content of this book is common sense. If you care enough to search out a book about building miniatures, you've probably already given it enough thought to figure out that you can cut a robe shape out of terrycloth and sew it together for the bathroom, or use sandwich bags for shower curtains.I was very excited waiting for this book to arrive, but wound up returning it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth Buying!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Miniature Worlds Delivers In A Big Way!
Susan & Martin Penny have written a fun book that is chuck full of projects for do-it-yourselfers.They show how to create miniature items from inexpensive materials (craft sticks, aida cloth, beads, pins, paper, clay, etc.), and/or things you might normally throw away (bottle caps, coffee stirrers, aluminum foil pie plates, etc). There is a wide range of projects, including a tea room inside an old teapot, a ladies hat & accessories store inside a hatbox, a whimsical fairy dwelling (made with twigs, dried cones, and other interesting things you may find in your backyard or the woods). There is also a wizard's room depicting an open book, which serves as the walls of the castle where the wizard lives. This is a book that will pay for itself in no time at all with the money you save by making your own accessories. It's a must for the DIY-er and I highly recommend it!

3-0 out of 5 stars There are better books around...
This isn't a bad book, per se.It's great for someone just getting started with doll house design, who knows absolutely nothing and wants to gain some cursory knowledge of different period styles. For someone like me who has a significant collection of books on the hobby, there was nothing in this book that wasn't covered elsewhere (and with more detail). There are some do-it-yourself projects in here, but nothing exceptional. Many of the examples are of store-bought items.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Patricia King.
As usual, Patricia King offers brilliant alternatives to buyingexpensive, British imports. Her stoves and fireplaces, made from foundobjects and very cheap supplies, are masterpieces. This highly creative book is beautifully photographed and a worthy addition to three others written by Ms. King: 1) 'Making Dolls' House Furniture', 2) 'Making Victorian Dolls' House Furniture' and 3) 'Dolls' House Bathrooms-Lots of Little Loos'. She also made a do-it-yourself video, but I haven't seen it yet. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, A Keeper!
This is an excellent book and I have enjoyed it very much. It is easy to follow the instructions and there are many of them in this book. She does concentrate a lot on English miniatures, these are useful though. She givesmany tips and instructions on how to use everyday items and turn them intobeautiful miniatures with excellent step by step instructions. I was andstill am very impressed by this book. I also paid more for mine since Ipurchased it in a retail store. Buy it Here!Believe me you are savingmoney! You won't be selling or giving this one away, but you will have itworn around the edges from using it so much. I know you will enjoy it asmuch as I have. I plan on using it for a long time there are still so manythings to do and make. I have just scratched the surface. Although this isa 5 star book, I do not like to put that on anything, I like to see theauthors continue to strive for better things. I do thank her for thewonderful work and the clear concise instructions and wonderful pictures inthis book. As I said in the beginning, it is a keeper!
