1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Booklet
I followed a link from garden railroading to this book.Even though the plans could be used for any gauge train with a little work, the plans are not put together very well. This book is primarily for 'O' and 'S' gauge track.(It says that at the bottom of the cover in the small colored band, you just cannot see it in the pictures from this site!)Each plan has a list of the track needed for assembly, BUT, it does not tell you where each of the track pieces fit. Most plans call for custom cut pieces with no info as to where they fit.The booklet is 48 pages.

2-0 out of 5 stars Track plans only
There is nothing in this book except the track plans and in some plans it is difficult to find out the square feet required.Nothing on building the layout. For $9 you might be able to use one plan. It's not really a book, it's a phamplet. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good history of bookbinding
Being a small publisher and bookbinder, I found this book very informative. It covers a wide view of bookbinding going back to the middle ages, right thru the 1950s. Edith Diehl has "been there" andknows all the ins and outs of bookbinding. At first some of the materialmay seem dated, but this is a manual for restoring books, using the samematerial and methods of the time period. Anyone who collects books shouldhave this very well written and illustrated manual. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource
An under-expounded subject in model railroading is that of passenger operations. This book goes a long way in addressing that need and it does so from various standpoints.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Large-Scale Model Railroading Handbook
This book provides a basic overview of Garden Scale Model Railroading. It provides a good basis for beginning a layout, track options specific to G scale and differences in manufacturers, wiring issues, scenery and roadbed for both indoor and outdoor applications as well as locomotive and rolling stock options and selection. As a beginner I found this very useful, but limited. It was a good starting point but I had to seek clarification on many topics through the internet and at the local hobby shop. It is not a comprehensive encyclopedia and it does not represent itself to be one. In summary a good starting point for the novice, probably of limited value to others already involved with model railroading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Large-Scale Model Railroading Handbook
The Large-Scale Model Railroading Handbook is one of the best books on the subject of both indoor and outdoor Large-Scale Railroading. The different layouts described, the different techniques used, and the photos shown givejust a glimps of this hobby. With just a little imagination, even beginnerscan produce beautiful layouts. The color photos and the listings of theplants used are exceptional and informative. A good book for both thebeginner and expert alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Step-by-step Resource!
Model Railroading with MTH by Rob Adelman is an outstanding resource for a beginner! 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book for your son at Christmas
This is a great book for understanding the world of MTH trains. It is a perfect book for a father and son to enjoy building a MTH train layout for the first time.It also has helpful hints for those more experienced in the hobby.5-0 out of 5 stars Great O-gauge Model Railroading Book
Model Railroading with MTH Electric Trains is by far the best book I have ever read on how to plan, construct, and operate an O gauge train layout. As I am just getting into model railroading, I can already clearly see that this book has all the resources I not only need to get going, but to keep progressing in the hobby. I was especially pleased with the chapter on the Digital Command System as the author explained it in an easy, straightforward way that really helped me to understand it much better. Getting started with DCS is a lot easier than I imagined. Not only that, but I also learned a lot about the many (over 200) different features that I had no idea it could perform. I'm really looking forward to trying those out. Another chapter I particularly like was the Dispatcher Game. I had never really given any thought to operating my trains with a purpose and this chapter outlines how to do so in a game-type situation. Plus, since it is based on how real railroads operate, I learned quite a bit. I am certainly looking forward to playing the Dispatcher Game once I am finished constructing my layout. The last chapter is also very good. I found the interview with Tony Lash as well as the pictures of his phenomenal layout to be excellent. Lastly, the book doesn't end with just the chapters--but also has quite a few appendices that contain a lot of useful information. Model Railroading with MTH Electric Trains is a definite must-have in my opinion and is extremely well done. I recommend anyone building or thinking of building a layout to get this book. Heck, even if you have a layout already, the Dispatcher Game chapter alone is worth the price of the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Venerable Idea Book
I think I have bought this book 3 or 4 times in my life. It has been around for a very long time. I have never built any of the layouts presented within but it has served as a great idea book from time to time. That's really what it is for.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Track Plans!
Linn Westcott was a master when it comes to model railroading and his track plans emphasized that fact. This book in it's first edition provided me with numerous ideas for my railroads in various scales over the years. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Any Model Railroader
I have had this book since it's first publishing over twenty years ago and it still inspires me everytime I look through it. Back then Mr. Westcott didn't inlcude 'N' scale, but the book provides so much information on howto re-calculate the dimensions not just for his layouts but for any designsyou might wish to try. It also outlines parameters by which you can designyour own layouts. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Many of my issues with this book were covered in another review. Most of the "plans" are really just a couple tracks. The diagrams aren't clear enough for a book on track planning (for a magazine writeup, maybe, for a book of plans for practical use, no). The plans are repetitive and derivative of each other. And, as previously noted, there is very little breadth of offering - over and over you see the same format of layout: for instance if you have any significant-size space but don't want a multi-deck layout, you're out of luck.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
An excellent book about designing a small to medium layout. Many track planning books assume that we all have huge basements and rarely focus on smaller spaces, like a spare bedroom.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disapointed
Very disapointing to say the least.THE BIG BOOK OF MODEL RAILROAD TRACK PLANS boasts "99 complete plans", I beg to differ. I accept the fact that many people do not have the room for large class-1 type railroad layouts, but many of the "shelf" plans are little more than a place to display your scenery talents and some rolling stock, nothing that could accurately be described as operational.Read more
