Some great tips, but not for everyone.
This book covers everything from card and plastic structures, to wood and plaster craftsman kits and metal castings.It does not cover it evenly however.Only 14 of the 222 tips deal with plastic kits and kitbashing, while there's a full 3 pages on applying roofing shingles to craftsman kits!Although there are many useful tips - and a couple of gems, I would only reccomend this book toa modeler just starting on craftsman kits.That's really the books focus. If you're not building craftsman kits, or you've built several already, this book won't be very relevant.

Great book about modeling structures.
I own several how-to books on model railroading and this one in particular does a great job of explaining how to build and incorporate structures on layouts.It also has great diagrams and pictures to help the reader with projects they may want to try.I highly recommend this book to model railroaders that may want some new ideas or tips on how to improve current skills. ... Background Information
At first starting this book, it seemed to be just about constructing a backdrop for a model railroad and that all other topics were omitted. That is not the case. It covers all the basics in broad generalities. That being said, the first portion of the book is about backdrops and it is good coverage on that subject. It gives general principles and some hints for easier construction. From there is covers other subjects and goes downhill.
Should be titled: Scenic Backdrops.
This book contains very few new ideas and little or no step-by-step instruction. Dave Frary's book How to Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery is a much more useful book with myriad tips and examples.

Not for the unexperienced.
A good book is you are looking to make a backdrop for your model railroad.If you are just looking to make realistic scenery (like hills, water, plants etc) it could be better.A full half of the book is dedicated to making backdrops, and each other topic only gets a chapter.I did like the chapter on blending scenery though.I wouldn't recommend this book for people who don't have scenery building experience. ... A veritable treasure trove of nostalgic memories
Vividly illustrated from cover to cover with numerous full color photographs, Toy Train Memories by John Grams is a superbly organized and presented celebration of classic model railroad sets, such as many readers might have once received as Christmas gifts or seen in department stores near the holiday season, especially during the 1940's and 1950's. Dated, But Still Useful
This is truly a classic in the field of motive power books.Readers will find crisply printed diagrams, technical information and well reproduced pictures on large-sized pages.This is not a volume to put on your workbench as it is large.Since the content is somewhat dated; i.e. you won't find many 2nd generation units in there, I wish Kalmbach would develop and print an updated edition; I know I'd buy it. Highly recommended.

Must have for diesel
I like this almost as much as the steam version. For roster info, I use Marre's Contemporary Diesel Spotters Guide 2nd Edition

Currently the best planbook available
If you want to build diesels from scratch, this is the best planbook you will find. There are photos, write-up and other data also! The only things it lacks, are more roster info and detail drawings of fans, lights etc,which would be helpful in model building. ... Read more

Great pix, better techniques than the "classics"
This handbook has great photography of his layouts. [Someone]who complained about expensive commercial scenery has a point, but Schleicher's use of [inexpensive] felt and natural dirt to make good looking grass is an example of a money-saving technique. And the insulation-board technique for building hills is a big improvement over the traditional plaster & paper-mach� methods. As with any book of this nature, ideas and inspiration are more the point than a slavish step-by-step plan. A Timeless Book
This book by Robert Schleicher is timeless. Offers helpful modeling information to the beginner and advanced modeler alike. It's a book you'll want to have in your library for reference when building or upgrading your layout.

Iain Rice is a Master Layout Designer
Please examine Mr. Rice's Layout designs, as EVERYDetail is fully thought out as depicted in his renderings.Magical!

Good but could be better
Iain Rice is a wonderful designer and there are some great ideas in this book, but it lacks small railroads and blue prints.Even so I think it would be a good purchase.

Deceptive Title
Nice track plans and concepts, but there only a couple of SMALL track plans in this book. If you really want SMALL track plans, check out the other track plan books such as the Atlas #6 and #7 books if you want N scale or the HO versions.Much less expensive and small, although nowhere near the nice concepts in this book.Read more

A Good Picture Book for Those in Need of Toy Train Nostalgia
This book is for everyone who always wanted a Lionel set, and never got one.The photographs accurately capture the marketing appeal of the sets and take you back to when you were eight years old and a Lionel train set was what you wanted for Christmas.The book commemorates 100 years of Lionel trains. This "licensed" Lionel book has been corporately washed and shoved out the door. The photography is stylish, but hardly informative. Lionel buffs want the real story of Lionel's rise and fall, rise and fall with real people behind the pictures. For a Lionel fan, this book is a big disappointment.A better book just came out entitled "Lionel: America's Favorite Toy Trains" by MBI Publishers.It is everything this book isn't - and cheaper.
