5-0 out of 5 stars REALISTIC Is The Key!
Lou Sassi is a master model railroader and this is a excellent place for beginners to start their initiation into the hobby. If you just yearn to put down an oval of track and run trains (which IS great fun!), you don't need to buy this book. If, on the other hand, you've been captivated by photos of super realistic layouts and wished you knew someone who could help you get started on building one - this book will be worth every penny you pay for it. If you don't know what "L Girder" benchwork is or why you might want to use it, Lou will tell you what, why, and how to do it. If you marvel at ground cover that looks more like an aerial photograph than a model, Mr. Sassi will show you how it's done. Even the beginner can do this. Each phase of construction contains photos, detailed lists of tools and materials, and step-by-step instructions. While it may seem complicated in its entirety (the mark of a realistic model)the individual skills are really easy for the beginner to grasp. This is a really useful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too complicated
I found this book to be much to detailed for beginners.I was looking for something that was more along the lines of "model railroading for dummies". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book on the subject
Scratchbuilding is a lost art these days, but this book does a good job of explaining how it's done. The book assumes the reader knows little, and it tells enough that a first-timer can build a successful and satisfying project. Of course the photos in the book can spur a seasoned scratchbuilder to try to do better also. The book primarily deals with inexpensive materials and simple tools, making it ideal for the beginning or intermediate modeler. One of the projects involves making a caboose out of paperboard and wood. You'd never know from the pictures it was made of paper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, good overview
I found this book very helpful. It gave a nice overview of a variety of up-to-date techniques. Seeing a number of different small and medium sized railroads built from start to finish gave me a good idea of the kinds of techniques I would like to use. With this book as a starting point, I was able to find further information in other publications more specific to my needs. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A invaluable source for Marx Instruction Sheets
Each Marx/Allstate/Montgomery Ward/Grants/Western Auto/Walgreens train set made by the Louis Marxcompany came with a number of instruction sheets. At the least, there was the basic sheet showing how to connect thetransformer to the track and how to put the track together. It included asynopsis of how to lubricate the locomotive.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Book
Robert Schleicher is a master when it comes to model railroading. This book is a nice supplement to any other books one has about N scale. Offers helpful information about couplers, remotoring, and scenery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to N-scale
This is a nice and compact book. It gives a good and clear overview of the different aspects of N-modeling including switching, weathering and maintenance of your rolling stock. The use of pictures is very good. Noticeably is that the author also includes Kato track in his review of track options. The clear discussion of different scales within model railroading and the advantages and disadvantages of N-scale impressed me. The author has a strong view on the use of DCC and I agree with him, DCC offers so much ease that it should be used if possible. The book is exclusively aimed at the US market; no European manufactures or layouts are discussed. Drawback of this book is that it only gives an overview of the many aspects of N-scale modeling. Although the building of a specific layout is used as an example, in my view, it does not offer a tutorial for a layout a novice easily could build. In conclusion: although the book leaves you with many new questions, it is a very good introduction to N-scale modeling. For modelers of US style N-scale, Kalmbach also has a good alternative by Martin J. McGuirk. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disapointment
At one point Trzoniec says you should start with a train set. Then,he recomends ''o '' gauge over 027 for a small layout, and tells us to buy all new trains,in o gauge. Then we are toldto only set up our train set at Christmas!! The old MDK book is MUCH better.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice book!
This book was very helpful for me, especially the excellent train table information. Now my wife is mad at me, and we have one less room in the house for guests.4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer for the beginning Lionel railroader.
I purchased this book to help me plan a Lionel layout to run during the holidays. The book provides a good overview of train types, track planning, track laying, wiring accessories and scenery. A good read on this topic, but don't expect too much depth given the length (96 pp) and breadth of topics covered. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Basic
This is more of a general concept book than a detailed guide. That being said, it does provide some explicit instructions and it could reasonably be expected to take an enthusiast a long way. It is meant as an introduction but many people may find that they don't need anything more complete. The subject matter is pretty simple.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book on Great Northern
This is an easy to read book about the Great Northern Railway. The book covers the history of the railroad in great looking black and white photos. But if you want a lot of information on the railroad, this is not the book for you. The pages are very spaciuos with generally one or two photos on each page and a total of about 15 pages of text. With that in mind I can really recommend the book. Its a great way to spark an interest about the Great Northern Railway. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great paperback
A grat paperback on this wonderful railroad and its motive power.5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
Another nice book about the B&O Railroad. Anyone interested in the Baltimore and Ohio should have this book. Superb black and white photos of the B&O in the colorful Potomac Valley. Includes lots of steam in action.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-Done Collection of B&O Photographs
This is similar to other reasonably-priced books of railroad photographs published by Kalmbach. The pictures in this large format volume are all black and white, well-printed on slick paper, and feature informative captions. Its content covers the "heart" of the B&O's operations in the east - not just the Potomac Valley. The book will be useful to both historians and modelers as the pictures show the physical surroundings of the railroad - not just closeups of locomotives and cars.B&O in the Potomac Valley is recommended for those interested in the B&O, the "transition era" from steam to diesel power, and in coal-hauling railroads in general. ...
