My son usedhis sister's copy of this book and loved it.He asked for it for Christmas and I bought it and received itsoquickly, I was impressed.I can't wait to give it to him.It looks very impressive to me, also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
The variety of projects in this book and the step-by-step explanations, make it a great resource for beginners and experienced miniature makers.5-0 out of 5 stars This is the most wonderful book
I made myself a miniature drugstore since I am a pharmacist and I had trouble finding things like mortars and cylinders. Thanks to this book I managed to make the most beautiful look-alike mortars with pestles and all, also a little turn-of-the-century (last century, of course) telephone. The directions are precise and you can really get what you are looking for (and I had never touched polymer clay in my life!) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Photos - Lots of Errors
As the wife of a retired AE (Aviation Electrician) who spent his entire 20 year Navy career working on the F-14 Tomcat, I have learned a bit about this particular aircraft over the years (the basics, mind you!).However, I was disappointed in this book because of the many technical errors that both my husband and I found in the book. For example, on page 16 there is a picture of two men working on a Tomcat, one wearing a green shirt and one wearing a red shirt. The caption for this picture refers to an ordnanceman in a green shirt. However, even I know that the man in the red shirt was the ordnanceman. My husband went on to point out several more discrepancies in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
The pictures are incredibly detailed, and the book covers every inch of this mighty figter. Top notch photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Verlinden Productions Lock On No. 18: Grumman F-14A/B Tomcat
Verlinden's Lock On No. 18 is by far the best reference book I have come across regarding the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. Most of the photos were taken aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal and follow the carrier operations of VF-31 "Tomcatters" and VF-11 "The Red Rippers". There are nearly 100 color photographs throughout the book detailing every aspect of this plane from nose to tail, including on-board computer systems, weapons systems, landing gear, powerplants, and several pages alone dedicated to the cockpit interior. If you are in need of reference material for model building or if you just have an interest in navy combat aircraft this would be a great book to have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding work
I'm giving this book "5" stars because of who the modeler is, but I thought more detail on the planning of Greg's dioramas and the actual steps involved in making his dioramas should have been published; this information would have been very helpful to me and other master modelers.Greg Cihlar's work is the most impressive I've ever seen.Greg is exceptional in his craft. His skin tones are the best I've ever seen where many modelers skin tones are yellow or orange. His weathering is excellent. His composition and groundwork are outstanding. The balance of his dioramas is very well thought through.Greg has a very special talent and I hope he goes very far with his craft.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Book
Greg Cihlar's Fabulous Military Diorama's is a suprisingly average publication. What you get with the book is bright, fancy color pictures, but very little substance. There is little detail on the planning of the diorama's and the actual steps involved in making the diorama's.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book has a series of interesting projects that can be explored in different ways by teachers and educators. Besides the obvious applications in woodworking practical classes, the projects illustrate in a very simple way concepts and basic ideas in motion and mechanics. These are undoubtedly exciting ways to "tease" students in his discovering of physics and mechanics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Wooden Mechanical Models
This book is great. I am looking at it from a teachers point of view. With our highly mechanized world, I find that students sometimes do not understand the priciples behind some of our most simple machines. Examplesmight be a lever, inclined plane, pully, or gears and cams. This book notonly teaches about the make-up of machines, it teaches them a lesson inwoodworking craftsmanship. In order for these projects to work superbly, great care and pride must be taken in the making and assembling of eachproject. When the projects in this book are completed, they can serveas a model for someone to actually hold and use to grasp concepts of themechanical nature. They are also great conversation pieces. I would highlyrecommend this book not only for it's projects, but it's easy to read andunderstand format. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, superficial
There really is not enough information here to justify a separate book. The same information can be found in a lot of other books that cover a broader range of railroading topics. The book is particularly poor in its coverage of diesel servicing. It simply states that diesel facilities are too large to model and then reconstructs a small facility by setting up a Pikestuff building with some American Line accessories. That is a whole chapter in a nutshell.I think anyone purchasing a book like this would hope for a lot more information. They will not find it here.Basics like how to lay track or add turf effects should really be covered in other books and their inclusion here just seems filler. The author assumes that all people reading the book are working in HO scale.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for the serious model car collector
Collectors of model cars prefer to spend their spare cash on model cars, not books on model cars. I can understand their priorities, but in the case of Ford in Miniature they really ought to reserve a few dollars for an exceptional book that puts an important part of their hobby in perspective - 1:43rd scale handbuilt models of classic American cars. Randall Olson displays a knowledge of Fords and handbuilt models like few others with a stunning array of color pictures and loads of inside information. His book will surely become a standard work for the model collector - at least for that discerning collector who is willing to spend a little on books on model cars, and not just model cars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tips but outdated plans
This is a great book for anyone interested in learning how to make kites. The only downside to the book is that the stunt kite plans are very dated.Since this book was published in 1996, dual line stunt kites have progressed in aerodynamic design and materials. There are plans for kites on the internet that utilize these new sail shapes and framesets that (in my opinion) would allow a person to make a kite that would provide a more enjoyable flying experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimately Satisfying
If you are even attempting to take on this project, you are likely a fan of Wright's work. It helps to know Wright's style and history. There are some flaws or omissions in the instructions (see ref to part #57 in other review) and one or two errors in the printing. Not for kids or the impatient. As you gain experience the task becomes easier as you are able to anticipate how things will come together. The finished product is very attractive and unique. An inexpensive project for cold, winter nights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced modeling skills needed
Agree with other reviews.Emphasize that this is for an advanced modeler with modeling patience. Card stock is difficult when use to other material. Some of the referenced difficulties may be avoided by careful and thorough scoring. No idea as to the modeling accuracy, but the presentation looks real good.Especially when presented with the book, FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S ROBIE HOUSE.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the Mature Hobbyist
If you're a fan of the works of Wright, and have experience with detail oriented hobbies, you will likely find this a challenging but "do-able" project. For example, I've built plastic model kits for over thirty years, and it took me about three and a half months to complete the house, working on the standard hobbyist schedule (i.e. nights and weekends when I felt like it). Be aware that even with careful assembly, the finished product reflects the limitations of card stock - the long, thin pieces (notably, the wall around the front of the house) tend to become a bit wavy when folded and glued. Still, if you have the patience, and are comfortable with the investment of time involved, you'll end up with a nice replica of an architecturally significant home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes look
I've really been enjoying this book, ten minutes at a time. It explains the rules (I'm not sure I had realized there were any)behind the action, and includes capsule looks at number of bots I've seen locked in the box. The author talks about the costs of some bots, the time involved in designing them, and the number of upgrades they've gone through. I suggest this book for any fan of the TV show or the sport.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Collectors Guide For early Series
If you are a Matchbox regular wheels collector, 1953 - 1969 series, then this is the book for you. Very clear pictures of both model and box variations from the early Lesney period. While a number of the very rare MB variations aren't present which is a shame e.g. red version of model 45 - A Vauxhall Victor (photo recently on eBay auction), this doesn't detract from its usefulness as an overall guide, hence the four star rating. Book was printed in 2001 so its price listing value is a little bit dated but this is due only to the passage of time which is to be expected - e.g. model 33 - C - 1 shown as being US$400 - $650 in this book but in his own Encyclopedia edition (2002) the same model variation is shown as shown as being US$250 - $300. Just proves that as a collector you need a good range of MB guide books to help you and a little bit of wisdom & experience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great robot combat book for beginners
This book is a must read for those new to the sport and who are interested in R/C robot combat tournaments. It primarily focuses on the basics of robot construction, from locomotion to weapon systems to robot fighting styles. Basic robot physics, tactics and acquiring sponsorship are covered as well.It also presents the issues involved with putting on your own tournament. There are helpful tips from a large assortment of knowledgeable people including top builders, vendors, tournament organizers and more.If you are new to the sport, it is an indispensable source of helpful information. Many `newbie' mistakes can be avoided with the experience gained from the book.
