5-0 out of 5 stars My Son and I Love this Book
My almost three-year-old child Devon loves this book. Obviously the drawings are too complicated for him. Heck, some of them are too complicated for me, but I attempt them anyway. Devon is into trucks and cars and my gal Sara and I lived on a sailboat for several years, so he's into boats as well, has to be, because we still talk about when we lived on the ocean, still dream about going back someday.
4-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging and helpful for beginners from 8 to 80
At 38, I was convinced that I could never learn to draw. However, I found this book on the shelf of the local bookstore and decided to give it a try. What was there to lose?Only my conviction that I could never learn todraw, as it turns out! While I still cannot claim real skill at drawingwithout following the steps, at least I can now produce a reasonablereproduction of what I see on the pages of an Ames book. It's great funand I'd encourage anyone who was ever told that perhaps drawing wasn't forthem to pick up this (or any other Ames drawing book) and prepare for amost pleasant surprise!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ever wanted to draw?
Another educational Lee J. Ames book.Line by curve, andstepby step the reader is drawn into the world of vehicle drawing.Anyone will find it easy to follow the sequential pictures and draw all sorts of fascinating models.I used this book some time ago and even though I don't remember the name of a single model and the book is long lost, I have continued to be artistic.Lee J. Ames helps the reader in the same way that studying with one of the Old Masters would help an art student. By emulating the style of an excellent teacher, the student can excel. This book is an easy first step in the wonderful world of art. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as it could be
I got this book because this is the book that seems to be recommended the most for people with an interest in building rubber-powered models. For the most part, it's a good book that does provide a good introduction to the hobby. However, I agree with a previous reviewer that a glossary would be helpful, and also this book is sorely in need of updating. It's clear that the book was written some time ago, and the copyright's just been renewed periodically. The instructions for the models could really use a parts list of what's needed (so that you don't have to go thru the directions over and over again trying to figure out what you need), and I think the book in general needs a good editing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rubber Powered Model Airplanes: Comprehensive?
Having recently purchased and read Don Ross' RUBBER POWERED MODELS:COMPREHENSIVE BUILDING AND FLYING BASICS, PLUS ADVANCED DESIGN YOUR OWN INSTRUCTION, I have a suggestion to the author and/or publisher.....provide a glossary of definitions to define the many abbreviations that the "veteran" hobbyist use.Since the book is aimed mainly at the "newcomer" that may not understand "OOS" means "Out Of Sight"(for example) he/she mayfeel that the text is too technical miss the great advice of an experienced modeler. This is not a criticism but a suggestion coming from someone that enjoyed the book, but wondered what a few of the abbreviations meant.I especially liked the chopping tool plan.Thank you for an informative book on a great hobby.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm disappointed.
This book, as I understand, is for beginners from age 8 to 12, have never had any experience with model aircraft. It teaches how to nail down sticks and putting on glue sort of things. Hardly discuss any theory. Absolutelyhas nothing to do with modern rubber powered contest model aircraft. It'spublished in 1998. If change this to 1948 it wouldn't surprise me at all, since it does reflect any development in model aircrafttechnology in therecent half century. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not technical enough
I have been model building for over 20 years, but only last year did I start painting figures. Most of my models had no figures or were done uninspired with acrylics.I finally decided to use oils and this book helped a lot with techniques for shading and highlighting. It's shortcoming was that they just said mix a base fleshtone, and add this color or that.I would really have liked ratios such as 4 parts raw umber, 1 part yellow ochre, etc.If it wasn't for my years of experience, I might have been been upset about this.Model building is a lot of trial and error and I had the patience to persevere, but a lot of paint was lost in these experiments.I can't say this is for someone with little experience but for model builders who can see a color and know what mix they need, it shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

3-0 out of 5 stars The System-What's the mix?
The book overall was good. The only flaw is when it tells the oils to use but it doesn't tell the mix for the first step. It shows the oils layed out and has them labeld but in the text it doesn't tell what all of them are. Some you can go by the color but for the first step it just says mixture A, but it doesn't say what mixture A is. It could have used a few more step by step photos in the beginning also.

3-0 out of 5 stars You will paint this way or else
The authors describe their techniques for painting miniatures with oils. I found the "do it this way or else" tone somewhat condescending. The examples are not very useful as the most difficult step, bending, is not shown. He goes from unblended to blended without an intermediate steps. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD READ FOR BEGINNERS
This wasa cover to cover read in one sitting. Was very informative in most ways. But I was looking for more detail.I have been into model railroading a LONG time. But new to Garden RailRoads.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Model Railroader Looks at Garden Railroading
This is the most organized and comprehensive single text on Garden Railroading that is currently in print. If my figures are correct, it is also the best-selling book on the subject. You will certainly save the cost of this book many times over as you use its guidelines to make effective planning and purchasing decisions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Addition to Your Miniature Library
Yet another excellent volume to add to your Miniature Library. This book also by Kath Dalmeny, is perfect for those wanting to make their own accessories instead of the commercial items available. Lots of very useful templates to take the guesswork out of those boxes, crates, labels etc. Ideal for those who like constructing things!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Projects
This book is packed with the most amazing craft projects, Kath Dalmeny's attention to detail simply breathtaking. I have her next book and if you want to make your own dolls house furniture, rather than buy it in a store these are the books for you.1-0 out of 5 stars Leave it in the store.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dollhouse Book
I spent hours with this book! The histories the author gave onthe dollhouses in this book were fascinating, and the photos! WOW!Once you open it, it's hard to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book
The book's shape is the first eye-catcher - cleverly done! Many photos, drawings, bios and histories make this a great gift which, I can assure you, will be appreciated!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book begs to be opened!
This was a very cool book! The first thing you notice when you pick up this book is that the cover is shaped just like a house, and the book's opening is right down the middle. It feels like you are opening up thedoors to a real dollhouse. Inside, there are full color illustrations ofdolls, dollhouses, and furniture on nearly every page. The details arephenomenal! If you are a collector or builder of dollhouses, this is yourbook!I really enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading about theprivately owned dollhouses and collections that are featured in this book. Some of the more unique houses shown in the book are the Kupjack rooms, thePalace of Versailles, and the Shoe House. Those of you who attendminiature shows or are a member of NAME will recognize the names BrookeTucker, Ned Kellogg, andMarcia Backstrom as miniaturists featured betweenthese pages. This book is a wonderful addition to the collection ofminature hobbyists everywhere. ... Read more

Mr. Wingrove has some amazing talent! I am just getting started in brass modelmaking and I bought this book and his The Complete Car Modeller 1. Both book are indespensible for the wealth of information in them. I could not recommend one book over the other as both of them have unique information in them. However, I was really looking forward to the release of the second book because it covered scratchbuilding car panels in copper plate. This is covered more indepth in the second book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Flying Models" by Don Ross
This companion to Don Ross's "Rubber Powered Model Airplanes" covers updated information on flying and building rubber powered models. But best of all it now includes information related to flying the newimmensely popular micro models. Micro radio control models powered byelectric, CO2, as well as rubber are included in this book. Most everythingneeded to be successful with small model airplanes is included in thisbook. Everything from tools, materials and construction to flight trimmingis addressed. I would highly recommend this book as well as Don's firstbook "Rubber Powered Model Airplanes" as two books that most anysmall model airplane enthusiast should have in their library. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Book of Reprints
Be forwarned, this book merely reprint articles from past (and some may say ancient) issues of Model Railroader magazine. An expert model-railroader could probably create some of them, however, for a novice this provides little more than ideas for layouts. Also, many of the plans are for HO and N scale, with very few O scale layouts.
3-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Reference, but not more
Interesting read, if you are into layout design and want to understand why people built these plans the way they did. But the lack of detailed part plans will prevent you from ever re-building any of these tracks, let alone that they were designed for certain space requirements and yours are different. So while you are in the planning phase of your next railroad design, you might look through these plans for inspiration, but nothing more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for inspiration
As the other reviewers so aptly point out, this book provides more layout-inspiration than actual step-by-step instruction, and is not an "all-in-one" book. However, I found it invaluable as a source of ideas. The "Buzzards Cove" coastline scene was exactly what I was seeking for my small (3X5), novice N-scale layout.None of the other books I'd consulted offered anything like it. It's a simple enough matter to apply the suggested scenery to one of the more detailed, step-by-step books showing an identical track plan.In fact, one of the problems I've had with basic track-plan books is that they just show parts and wiring, and do not incorporate grade-changes or scenery. This book fills the inspiration-void. ...
