5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Simply Fantastic
I read this book over and over. Bill Horan sets a new standard for figure modeling and this book does a wonderful job of showcasing his work. The production qualities of the book are excellent. Most of these photos are incredible. There are many times when I study the photos of Horan's figures, look at my own and say, "How does he do it?" 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in gold
It's difficult to quantify Bill Horan's contribution to historical figure modelling. His sculpting and painting set a standard by which other work was judged for at least a decade and this title continues to be a source of inspiration for me six years on. The author's steady improvement over the years (including his early, modest, efforts) is documented, which I found fascinating and should provide a spur to improvement for any dedicated modeller.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive guide to military modelling!
Horan reveals his techniques for creating unique military models. He begins with his basic painting methods that are applicable no matter which painting medium is used. He then shows how to sculpt figures using ordinary items such as paper clips and toothpicks. The book then proceeds to the more difficult tasks of creating vinettes and dioramas. The book also includes a wealth of clear color pictures defining all the steps, as well as galleries of the authors (and others) work. This is a very valuable reference! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic book on building plastic sailing ships
I've used this book as a basic guide to building and enhancing several fully-rigged plastic model ships, and it is excellent.Besides having outstanding closeup photographs of built-up ships, basic modeling techniques are illustrated in step-by-step fashion, culminating in a complete chapter covering the construction of a 1/96 scale model of the USS President (modified from the USS Constitution).I especially found useful the special tips on hull strengthening and rigging, which are quite different with plastic models ... Editorial Review

What a terrific concept! Chris McGowan, a curator at the Royal Ontario Museum, has come up with the ideal hands-on science project. All you need is this book, three young chickens, a few household items, and some time to make your own scale model of an apatosaurus skeleton. And it neatly dovetails with current scientific theories that birds are the living descendents of dinosaurs. McGowan's detailed, practical directions even include recipes for the leftovers. No one who has ever been interested in dinosaurs will be able to resist this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, especially if you have kids!
A wonderful project, and a clear and well-written book.Do not expect to finish quickly -- we spent many hours over many months cleaning, sorting, cutting, and assembling a beautiful 'apatosaurus.' Kids of all ages (mine are 3 and 5) can get involved, from enthusiastically finishing their chicken dinners to cleaning and sorting and assembling the new family pet.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best educational tools I've ever seen:
I am a 21 year old biology major and this is one of the best science books I've ever purchased.I have always loved books that involved cut-and-paste but this one is the best. You end up with an actual model of a dinosaur as well as extensive knowledge of skeletal anatomy, dinosaur and bird facts, and how to roast a chicken! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
I LOVED JUST LOOKING AT THIS BOOK. THE IMAGINATION OF THE WHIRIGIGS AT THE FRONT OF THE BOOK WAS JUST AMAZING. THEY WERE LIKE WORKS OF ART. THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE ONES YOU ACTUALLY MAKE ARE NOT THAT ELABORATE THOUGH. BUT IT GIVES YOU LOTS OF IDEAS FOR WHEN YOU GET REALLY GOOD.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the easiest whirligig book to understand on the market!
I teach arts and crafts at a summer camp in the North Georgia mountains and am always looking for some fun, original folk art to do with the kids. After buying several other whirligig books on the market, I decided to buy this one, hoping it would be easier to understand. It was! Additionally, the photo gallery is phenominal. Whimsical works of art laughing in the breeze. If you are interested in building whirligigs, this would be the first book I would recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
This book is filled with good quality color pictures of many projects. It also explains how to make the complicated parts of wind toys.It tells what kinds of wood will hold up, and what kinds of wood will fail.It improved my whirligig designs greatly, and added many new ideas for my new ones. Well worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LONG OVERDUE!
This book caters for those mini-fans who enjoy authentic finishes and offers many easy to cut plans for counters, sneeze-tops, display units etc. It is categorised into many inspiring sections such as the basics to start with (tools, materials, techniques, lighting and resources) and then proceeds to 5 superb projects - An Edwardian toy shop, Victorian Ironmongers, Art Deco tea room, Victorian bookseller and 1930 Grocer. Do not think that this is only for this time period - there is so much inspiration! Many woodwork items can be used in a modern bookshop/grocer for example. Plans are included for each "shop" with background info to ensure authenticity. How to cut the pieces, assemble them and finish the shop are all included. Load. Its one of my favourite books & well worth the cost.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should be titled "How to sculpt figures that happen to be SS"
If you are looking for a book with some history and background to the SS and their uniforms, with great "how-to" write-ups on painting them, this ain't the book. If you are looking for a general "how-to" manual on sculpting custom figures, this is a pretty fair account of that endeavor. Seems more like a "look how good I am at making custom figures" self-glorifying publication than a true modeler's resource... Disappointing... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent source for kite making
Maxwell Eden did an excellent job of explaining how to make kites. The book is packed with kite building information including step-by-step processes, closeup drawings, as well as color photos of completed kites. The specific instruction and detail on constructing a wide range of flyers is excellent.
3-0 out of 5 stars Read : kite construction book!
This book has several original designs, but some are just overly complicated and time consuming to build. You should try building a simple design : the Trefoil Delta kite! I credit Maxwell Eden particularly for including many useful tips on construction (seams, connectors, knots etc). Together with the book by Pelham you could not go wrong, anytime!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kites, Kites and More Kites

Is good for elementary to high school students andalso for parents to teach their children the fun of kite creation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures
As a former crewmember of VS-41 in San Diego, this was a very personal buy for me. The great pictuers of the S-3 bring back so many wonderful memories of the friends I made in the squadron, and the endless questions I had to my friends (both officer and enlisted) about the mighty War-Hoover. It has a place of honor in my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only reference book of S3B Viking I've ever heard
This book provides you over 80 color photos anddetails which guide you to know about everything on this aircraft which can make you feel like a pilot who checks his aircraft before flight. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point. Great book
I really enjoyed the book.Read it from cover to cover, then again, before making the plunge and buying my first heli. 3-0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed with this book
I found this book too basic. Most of the book is about choosing the right equipment. There are only a few chapters on flying.I found alot of this information by searching Deja News and reading rec.models.rc.helicopter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners!
This book is very well setup and organized for the beginner in mind.It does not assume that you know everything, and by the end of the book, you'll know enough to finally fly a helicoptor. However, the tech info is slightly outdated (1995), but it is still very helpful.I'd stronglyrecommend it.I'd also recommend getting Milt's Helicopter videos too! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A survey of milling - not a how-to book
I was expecting a hands-on tutorial on the use of a vertical milling machine.Instead all I got was a nice novel complete with detailed photographs of the author's accomplishments. He is accomplished, he just doesn't tell us how he did any of it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful little book
Focused mainly on English table-top mills, and their use in making model engines, this book is a tad parochial. However, it will help the novice machinist learn about milling procedures and how to set up jobs. Particularly useful is a table of RPM recommended for different cutters on different materials. I think author's coments about milling machines willhelp the novice with the selection of a machine - what to look for. I personally found it very helpful - I am just learning how to use my Clausing mill and this book will help. ... Read more
