Editorial Review

Morris's exquisite design work--widely appreciated and found in many museums--is generally beyond the reach of the general public. But if you've ever longed for a Morris chair or tapestry, this book offers the next best thing--Morris's designs adapted to needlepoint, each superbly charted and accompanied by beautiful photos of the finished product. Although the information on basic techniques is well presented, these are intricate designs best attempted by those with some needlepoint experience. The designs are so luscious, however, that even beginners may be inspired to practice in order to create these lovely pieces. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous designs:Occasionally difficult charts
I'll start by saying that I LOVE Beth Russell's interpretations of Arts and Crafts designs in this book as well as her other two. She's chosen wonderful motifs and arranged them into lovely, unique needlepoint projects.I speak from experience, as I'm now working on my third project from her books, the orange border design shown on the cover of this volume, worked on large canvas to make a rug.I highly recommend all three books for lovers of needlepoint, other charted needlework, arts and crafts design, or William Morris.5-0 out of 5 stars Rave review for William Morris Needlepoint
Beth Russell is a master at creating easy to follow charts for needlepoint projects. Her color changes are particularly easy to follow.Any figure, flower or section of her designs can easily be separated and converted for use wherever wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars a proper review
I want to comment on two reviews done before me. I am surprised why both people only gave 4 stars when this book actually deserves 5. Both reviewers are being very harsh on such a good book.

As a novice cross-stitcher, I found the charts in this book to be clear and easy to follow.Twenty years later, it is one of the few "beginner" books I have retained in my collection because thedesigns are so charming. These are monograms you'd use on table linens andelegant needlework.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book BUT BE AWARE
This is a great book for people who are inspired by colour and design and it has provided a lot of inspiration for me.However, this is EXACTLY the same book as "The Tapestry Book: Twenty Inspiring NeedlepointDesigns" by the same author - Jill Gordon.Only the dust jacket andinside front and back pages are different - if you collect needlework bookslike me, you DON'T need both!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
I have another perspective on this book.I had never before done any needlepoint, and I have just completed the salamander and frog needlepoint without any trouble.Yes, I do have experience reading charts (I do lotsof complex knitting, and I did detailed cross stitch about 15 years ago),but I would not discourage someone from buying this book just because theyare not a needlepoint expert.I subscribe to the "If you want itenough, you can do it" school of thought. If you find richly coloredneedlepoints with unusual subjects to be inspirational, this is certainlythe designer for you.I don't find most needlepoints to be worth the timeinvested, as they seem rather ordinary.Jill Gordon's designs are allextraordinary!By the way, Jill Gordon is aware that she has made peopleunhappy by not charting all of the designs in this book. She has beenhaving them charted and is making them available on her web site.I forone can't wait for the flamingo tapestry to be available!

4-0 out of 5 stars Gordon's style is peculiar, but some very nice tapestries
After owning this and Gordon's Tapestry Collection, also available at Amazon, for about a year, I still find her style odd, although her designs have grown on me.The cover design is lovely both in photograph and inperson. In this book, there is a nice, though too brightly colored for mytaste, hollyhocks 3 panel screen, some landscapes, some fishscapes. It's agood introduction to her style. If you like this book, find the TapestryCollection too -- the designs are much nicer, more distinct and moreartistically mature. And the Tapestry Collection has most of the designscharted, including one panel of a three panel phenomenal wild poppieslandscape. Glorious Needlepoint (not to be confused with Fassett's ownGlorious Needlepoint, which has been out of print in this country for yearsalthough last time I checked it was available at Amazon UK), has manyphotos of tapestries, but not all are charted, which was annoying. Some ofthese are available as kits as noted in the book, although the kits aredone on interlock canvas, which in my view is rather cheap (the kitsthemselves, however, since they are imports, are expensive). This book isworth having in your needlepoint library, as is her Tapestry Collection(highly recommended). Caution: if you buy the Tapestry Collection, Amazonalso lists Gordon's Tapestry Book. This is the UK edition of the TapestryCollection -- they are identical.Don't make the mistake of buying both asI did! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in needlework!
This book outlines a variety of needlework techniques ranging from hand and machine sewing to lacemaking and tapestry work. It is especially valuable as a reference when repairing an old piece of needlework or lace (e.g. a vintage wedding dress). The new edition lacks some of the more complex examples found in the original (1958) edition and the sewing machine info is updated (unfortunately for owners of antique machines), but it's an invaluable addition to any crafter's library. ... Editorial Review

What an absolutely perfect craft Frank Cooper has come up with in these miniature needlepoint Persian, Caucasian, and Turkish carpets! They are simple, beautiful, unusual, and portable. The miniatures are typically between 6-9 inches in width and 10-16 inches in length, and though they are quite detailed, the stitches are not impossibly tiny. Cooper uses a #18 canvas (18 stitches per 2.5 cm), which allows these little jewels to work up surprisingly quickly. The instructions are plainly written; the charts are the book's only real drawback, as they must really be enlarged on a copier to be usable by the average needleworker. But the patterns are authentic, taken from rugs Cooper has studied closely in his travels, and the color photographs and the historical background he adds to each rug's description are alone worth the price of the book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for lovers of oriental carpets...
I couldn't resist this book! I love oriental carpets, but of course they're expensive and require a lot of space. This way I can have the designs I love, in miniature. The rugs he chose are lovely, and the designs easy to follow, plus he provides the color numbers for the yarn if you want to use his colors. (This is particularly nice if you live overseas like I do and need to order the yarn.) I would have liked some hints on how to come up with designs for other rugs, but it's easy to figure out by looking at his designs. The book is obviously for a niche market, but if you like oriental carpets and needlepoint, I doubt there's anything out there quite like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Miniature Antiques
This book is a wonderful introduction not just to making miniature rugs inneedlepoint, but also to the subject of Oriental rugs. Each of the 24 rugsis well-photographed so that you can appreciate the detail of the originalweaver's design. There is also a clear pattern for use in doing yourdesign that will copy clearly, as well as suggested colors to authenticallyrecreate the design. But the author also provides commentary on thehistory, themes and features in the rugs he included so that the readeralso learns something about what makes these rugs repre- sentatives of thecultures of their makers.I really enjoyed this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I was all excited to receive this book that when it came I went straight to the computer because I noticed that it had some websites I didn't have bookmarked. To my disappointment 2/3rd's of the websites are not up and running. Also if anyone cross-stitches embroiders knits etc... they go into craft stores and know the names of the top companies and with very little computer know how they can look these companies up themselves. Now I see why so many are for sale and at such a cheap price.I am glad I only paid a dollar something for the book at least I didn't waste too much money.

There are a lot of folks who don't seem to think that the labor involved in research and writing about web sites is worth anything. Yeah, you can find all these sites by searching on Yahoo and Excite. But how much is your time worth to have the dumb and frivolous sites filtered out for you?Besides, these authors are insightful and hilariously funny! Highlyrecommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great primer that explains materials, methods & stitches.
I found the book to be excellent in the amount of information given and the format. The black and white pictures sometimes failed to show those who are just learning the art a detailed view of the stitch. This wouldmake a great bible of needlepoint for those who want to expand their craftbeyond the basketweave and continental stitches. It is a tremendousreference tool for beginners as well as experienced stitchers in that itgives indepth descriptions of the materials used, including advatages anddisadvantages of each kind.Materials covered include: canvases, fibers, colors etc.The only such book I have found so far!

5-0 out of 5 stars The absolute best book on needlepoint stitches
In print for almost twenty yesrs, The Needlepoint Book is by far the best and most useful book on needlepoint.Stitches are divided into chapters according to type (cross stitches, straight stitches). Each stitch has a diagram and a clear black and white picture. But my favorite tool in the book is the stitch tables which begin each chapter.Using these tables you can find great new stitches for backgrounds, heavily textured stitches, easy stitches, and so on.This kind of information is tremendously useful, but I've never seen another book which had it.If you never buy another needlepoint book -- buy this one ... This comprehensive volume teaches everything from bargello to wheat stitch, free embroidery to pulled thread work. More than 100 stitches are explained with clear instructions, photos, and diagrams. Dozens of projects incorporate the stitches and their variations into chair seats, samplers, pillows, frames, pincushions, covered boxes, and rugs. The befores and afters are also here: selecting canvas, threads, and other equipment, and finishing techniques--from blocking to mounting to adding trim. ... Read more
