Great Book
There are so many techniques here I don't know which one to try first.

Classic encyclopedia a must for SCA'ers and historians
While you may not set down to do Arabic-style embroidery or do fine handsewing, if you belong to historical recreation societies such as SCA or others, this book is an absolute must. The best chapter, in my opinion, is the one on handsewing, teaching the reader how to stitch as if they were a sewing machine. You need a cushioned lead weight to pin the piece out on--this holds it taut while you do a backstitch seam. Picking a hem, mattress stitch and other hand techniques are drawn in an old style of steel plate but very visible. Fabulous Info, Poorly Reproduced
After 112 years the information in this book is still as important as it was when it was first published. However, the quality of the reproduction in the images is appalling. I also have an edition from 1910 in which you can clearly see sections of many of the embroidery images that are almost totally blacked out in the anniversary edition.Read more

Beautiful - One of My Favorite Needlepoint Books
This book is absolutely beautiful.Definately one of the best.No silly, soft pictures here only classic, elegant needlepoint.Heirlooms to last for generations.I would recommend this book to any needlepoint enthusiast, beginner or experienced.Take your time, study the charts for timeless, breathtaking pieces.

Review
I bought this book a few weeks ago after looking long and hard to find beautiful to stitch, not cheesy. I love the patterns, my only problem are the mistakes in the patterns- instead of fixing the color on the chart, there are notes in the text that indicate a certain area is supposed to be a different color than marked on the chart- causing confusion and ripped out stitches. Otherwise I love this book!

Beautiful designs, worth the troublesome charts
I'll start by saying that I LOVE Beth Russell's interpretations of Arts and Crafts designs in this book as well as her other two. She's chosen wonderful motifs and arranged them into lovely, unique needlepoint projects. I speak from experience, as I'm now working on my third project from her books, the orange border design shown on the cover of her latest volume, worked on large canvas to make a rug. I highly recommend all three books for lovers of needlepoint, other charted needlework, arts and crafts design, or William Morris.Read more

Beautiful, Colorful Designs
I absolutely love this book.There is a nice variety of colorful and beutiful designs in various sizes to complete.I did not like the foreign languages with them becuase they were not translated.That dissappointed me.I wouldn't mind stitching something in Persian on a Persian-styled piece, but I would like to be able to tell someone what it means, should they ask. The projects could be completed without the lettering.Overall, I am really enjoying this book.It is a nice sampling of needlework designs from the nationalities mentioned. My favorite designs from this book were the Persian and Indian designs.I would have liked to have seen a few more Turkish-styled pieces.There was only one, an eye-glass case design; but then again, Turkey wasn't mentioned in the title. ... Real life
I enjoyed this book because it is a story about real life. It is an unexpected and very atypical story about a person whose life is, for some time, dictated by the disease of addiction.It was a difficult book to put down because the story is compelling and so human.
An Artistic Genius Revealed
Ray Materson was born with the gift of being an artist- a person highly sensitive to pain and to pleasure who could convey these feelings to others.Even when locked up in a jail cell, with nothing to work with, he created his own materials- ironically one of them being a needle (a paraphernalia of the drug trade) and sock threads to create incredible stunning detailed works of depth and beauty of a definite style, snapshots of memory overflowing with feeling.Fortunately an appreciator, who was to become his soulmate and wife, came along and tells his life story with its suffering and its pleasures.
Try Fiction
My good sense tells me that writing this book made the Matersons feel better about themselves.My mind tells me to thank God I never went the way of abuse or criminal activity.My experience tells me we all have a life story to tell.Reading this book showed me most of us do not tell our story to make money or a movie.If the Matersons want money and fame here's some advice:try fiction or learn how to write without being so self-serving. ...
