5-0 out of 5 stars A to Z Quilting Designs
This is an excellent "how-to" on just about everything pertaining to quilting designs.Instructions are illustrated and written not just on how to draft the design/s - but how to mark your quilt with the design - suggestions on where they might fit appropriately on your particular quilt top. She gives you a listing of the tools you will need to do each particular design, helpful hints, and much more. The variety of designs ranges from the common to the more unusual. The manual also includes a numerical listing of the quilt designs using a numbering system similar to the one used by Barbara BBrackman in her "Encyclopedia of Applique."If you only plan on purchasing one book of quilting designs you can't go wrong with this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Designs for Quilting
New quilters to seasoned hand quilters will benefit from this book. The how-to part of the book is thorough and plentiful. Keep in mind that it was published in 1996, and the tools and methods described are traditional, similar to those used by our ancestors in quilting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every quiltemaker must own this book....
I have been a quiltmaker for 6 years now, but have yet to become a good quilter until I read this book.In just one evening, I was able to draft a border pattern using the box from Stovetop Stuffing and draw it on mycurrent quilt project, a double 9-patch.I actually teach quilting butnever got very intricate with my quilting stitches. I can now do feathersand cables with ease.I will refer to this book forever and will neverneed another for designing quilting patterns and getting ideas for futurequilts. This book is entirely focused on the quilting stitches where mostquilting books give you that info. as an afterthought. Thanks Phyllis D.Miller!I will now have some real heirlooms for my children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Long awaited fingerweaving book
The long wait for new material on Indian fingerweaving has finally paid off. This manual not only picks up where Alta Turner's Indian Fingerweaving left off, but pretty much covers everything she wrote some 20 yrs ago (save for the peruvian braiding). This manual is great for the beginners as well as more advanced weaver who want to pick up a few tips and tricks to create beautiful warp face and oblique woven sashes.Color plates and bountiful instruction are presented in the lessons and as well for those who are interested in learning the selvedge edge methods. There are many color plates as well as illustrations to help with comprehension. In the back you will find a slew of old b&w pics of the old-time pow wow straight dancers in their regalia and sashes. It features a color plate of the earliest extant example of warp face weaving from the late 18th century, not to mention all the other awe inspiring beauties! It doesn't just stop at weaving it includes instructions on how to weave in the tiny white beads (as opposed to sewing them in), beading the fringes, and the twisting and braiding of the fringe itself..This is the perfect book that both modern style and historical style weavers will not want to miss. ... Totally inspirational.I love this book.Wonderful examples of all types of textiles. Can't wait to get the next one when it is published.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful!
Save your money!I bought this book based on it's one good review and was horribly disappointed with the work shown in it.Downright bad stuff from the 'dogs playing poker' school of artists.I saw only one or two works in the entire book that were remotely inspirational. They should have called this book "World's Worst Fiberarts Designs".

5-0 out of 5 stars An Overview of Fiberart for Both Artist and Collector
A truly outstanding overview of the diverse world of Fiber Art.From traditional loomwork, to cutting edge computer generated imagery on fabric and everything in between, see the latest work from outstanding artists inthe field.Beadwork, quilting, fabric collage, embriodery, millinary andmore are represented in an easily accessed format. 5-0 out of 5 stars 30 charming samplers
Many of the samplers in this book are reproductions stitched on linen. Each has a brief history of who stitched it and when, a sharp color photo of the framed sampler (original or new), size, materials, directions, symbols and a black and white chart. The samplers feature assortedalphabets, verses and formal motifs. There is a page of locations of theoriginal samplers, with addresses and phone numbers to arrange visits. Each has a note of what collection it is in.Many of the samplers areperfect as beginning projects, and others require a higher level of skill. There are 2 pages of the variety of stitches used, including: cross, eyelet, rice, star, rococo, slant, buttonhole, chain and working with atambour hook. The motifs are quite inspirational to stitch from the chartsor create individual samplers from a combination of ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely gathering of history!
I bought "Historic Samplers" when it was first offered. So far, I have stitched three of the samplers. The photos are truly great, and the directions are clear enough for most beginning stitchers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb- bringing storybook characters to life
I liked this book so much that I uploaded the back cover to match the front. There is no cheshire cat in this book, I guess the other reviewer was thinking of another. The topics are Beatrix Potter, the Muppets (in crochet and knitting), Barbar by Jean de Brunhoff, Winnie the Pooh on the cover and the Wind and the Willows, Kate Greenaway and the Sun and Water Bonnet Babies.
3-0 out of 5 stars a delightful Christmas book, full of inspiration
This now out of print book is a delight. The designs, which feature avariety of needle work techniques, are classic. The "chelsea"cat embroidered ornament is only one of several animal motifs worthy ofreproduction. I would highly recommend this book even though it may bedifficult to acquire. Erica Wilson never disappoints needle workers withher love and passion for the needle and her designs are classic andinspired. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Instructions Inadequate
I purchased this book as my figure has changed and I needed to re-do my basic slopers. The pattern design books I currently have did not cover trousers so I was delighted to finda new book that was apparently so comprehensive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally !Best value for my dollar
I received this book yesterday and read the first 100 pages.I've sewn all my life and consider myself an advanced seamstress.I've sewn and made my own patterns for childrens' heirloom, business suits, and now enjoy making (jazz) dance costumes.I'm the one in line at the fabric store buying ten patterns, just to combine different details and features in different sizes, especially if sewing for a group.I probably own hundreds of patterns and almost that many books. For me, this book will pay for itself many times over.It isn't a sewing "how to" book and it wouldn't be the first book for a beginner. The reader should be familiar or use other reference books for actual garment construction techniques.I've bought other, less expensive sewing books to learn pattern manipulation and fitting techniques.I put off the purchase of this book, being put off by its price. But, finally! This book is so inspiring and liberating. In just the first 100 pages, I've gotten through the basic patternmaking and dart manipulation.I think I may never have to buy another pattern again !This is definitely a must have for the serious sewing enthusiast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Designs by Sharon
This book was used during a 12 week class I attended for Patternmaking. It is very thorough and is an excellent reference for just about any type of pattern one could desire to make.I learned a great deal using the book as a reference guide while I studied the various fundamental components to patternmaking. However, it can be a little intimidating if used as a self-study text. This issue could have been solved if there had been an answer section for the various exercises that accompanied each chapter. Many of the students in our class felt it was a text designed for those enrolled in a formal college level class, i.e., it oftened assumed reader knowledge beyond that expected of a lay person. (Everyone in our class was required to be at the advanced level of sewing experience.)Some of the exercises were made more difficult because the technique to design a sample pattern was in a later chapter, not having been covered in the one just studied.Overall, though,it is a good reference and certainly belongs in the personal library of any serious home sewer. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars So many patterns but none to make!
I honestly thought that out of 100 hats, I would be able to find quite a few to knit and crochet. How wrong I was. Obviously I expected some novelty hats, that is par for the course with the amount of patterns featured, what I hadn't expected was that there were going to be so few really nice hats. The children's hats are mainly novelty and make the kids look daft. The adults hats are either overly fancy or just plain ridiculous. I would have liked to have seen a few really practical plain patterns that could be adapted by the knitter/crocheter. I have abandoned this book, and have had to buy not one but two more books to find any nice patterns. On the plus side, they are well photographed, the patterns are easy to follow and the layout is great. Very disappointed overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Crochet/Knit Books on Hats!
This book not only has nice patterns, but the book itself is laid out nicely. There is a color photo of every pattern, each pattern has its own page. It presents itself as very modern, clean and easy to follow. I ended up buying two because the first one was bought as a gift for my sister but I didn't want to part with it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book!
I actually really like this book! At first I was doubtful because this is a knit and crochet book-which usually means really weird crochet designs and really nice knit. Unfortunately I don't knit, but I figured out of 100 hats there has to be SOMETHING I like.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good buy for the price/
You can get everything that you need from this book in the first few pages because the author repeats nearly every chapter by copying every paragraph word-for-word for instructions. She apparently assumes that you will read each chapter exclusively of every other chapter.Too many of the photos are way too up close and out of focus - apparently an attempt to be "artful", but definitely misplaced. There are far superior books for beginners and I do not recommend this book at all for anyone with any felting experience. There are a few projects that are beautiful, but not enough in this book to make it a worthwhile purchase.Too bad. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and beyond!
This was my first knotting book and I found it very easy to understand. It also explains how to begin and end in very clean ways that other books don't usually show you. Also shows you how to add filler or knotter cords when they start to get short. I particularly enjoyed the phishbone pattern. Very pretty and easy to do projects that look alot more complicated. There's lots of techniques here that you can use and expand on. The writting is not dry like a usual instruction book either. It's personable and fun! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing the point--should be projects for the beginner, but lacks detail
On first glance, this book looks like the perfect venue for an inexperienced crafter to create very functional bags.I can sew a seam, but I'm not an expert, so I purchased this book for the projects. As promised, the projects looked quite nice. However, the book itself lacks a level of detail necessary for the novice crafter to successfully complete the projects.

2-0 out of 5 stars Afghans to KNIT and crochet???
I agree with the previous reviewer - the crocheted afghans are pretty, and if you're looking for granny-square versions, this is a wonderful source.
4-0 out of 5 stars superb grannies
Of the 100 afghans, most are crocheted and of those 42 are granny squares by Janie Herrin to whom the book is dedicated. All projects have a full color picture and written out instructions (nothing charted). Almost all are made in worsted wt yarns. Some projects have appeared before in leaflets and the Herrin squares were once available online but they are now beautifully published here. Cover photo doesn't do the book justice. If you love grannies, this is a must purchase. Suggest waiting for the paperback version. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great, Great Place to Start!
I can't believe no one has reviewed this book yet. It's fantastic. The projects are great, and very cute. There are tons of very nice, professional pictures throughout the book to show you what your project is supposed to look like at various stages. The instructions are clear, and well written. I really can't say enough about this book. I am not a very experienced crocheter, so this book was perfect for me. I also love the other book in this series, "First Knits", and I highly recommend that as well. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the fact that the yarns the book calls for are a little obscure here in the US (the book is British in origin ) however, there's always the internet as a means of getting the yarn, and I've had no problem finding appropriate substitutions. Definitely recomended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
Michler provides in her book exactly what the title announces so I shouldn't have expected more. There are many transfer patterns with the basic instructions. I was hoping for some suggestions for projects. If you are looking for lots of designs to transfer this is a good value for the money.
