4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Serger Answer Guide
My wife was a first time user of a serger that I bought her for Christmas (I know - great Christmas gift - but it was what she wanted!) - anyways, she tells me that this book is very helpful for providing a lot of useful hints past the basic instructions you get with a new serger - she would recommend it for anyone who usually needs just a little more hints tht a basic instruction guide provides

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
If you are new to serging or even experienced, you will find this book a valuable asset in your sewing library.I am new to serging and have found it to be a very helpful. Most owner/instruction manuals tell you how to thread and use your machine but don't get into a lot of detail about the actual how-to of serging or problem-solving.This book covers everything from needles to sewing with various types of threads to troubleshooting with lots of illustrations and photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of its kind....
I'm dyslexic and left handed -- and after several decades of false starts learning to knit -- I finally got it.What I couldn't figure out from all the wonderful knitting books available now is how to get the beginnings and endings (and the errors in the middle) to work as well as the actual knits, purls, yarnovers, and slips....
5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for Crochet
Well done you. It is a great thing to write a book, another to actually have it published, and a sheer triumph if it is a good read. Congratulations on achieving all three.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good all-around reference book
I like the book very much, however, I feel the layout and the photography could have been tighter and more artful. There's a bit of a rushed-to-put-together feel about it, which is disappointing.Nevertheless, good value for a finishing reference book because it applies to all needlework disciplines. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars STUNNING!
This book is absolutely stunning, and so inspirational. I know I'll never be able to make anything like it but still.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
This book is sumptuous. The artist's work is so spectacular that it is intimidating. However, she makes clear that she has had her share of false starts, which is comforting.I also appreciated her comments on her art, which turn out to be, in addition, comments on life. This is not a "how-to-do-reproduce-my-quilt" book, but there is a good deal of useful technical information.I have over 130 books on quilting and related topics and I think this is number one on my favorite parade. ... Editorial Review

With its intricate patterning, silken and golden threads, and traditional symbolic motifs, Japanese embroidery is unlike any other embroidery technique. The term "lost art" is all too often applied to intricate textiles and needlecraft, but fortunately not to this exquisite artistry, which is still going strong even after a thousand years. This volume traces the history and applications of an ancient and fascinating form, and provides extensive instructions for achieving these beautiful designs. Though the techniques require patience and practice, many of the seemingly complex stitches are actually composed of surprisingly simple elements, and all is clearly explained here. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Japanese Embroidery
I purchased this book for my wife who is learning this technique and her words were, 'the best book I have ever seen on this subject'.She says that this book gives more advice and is more easily followed than any other books she has seen.It is meant for the beginner who is new to the technique and is therefore invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to whet your appetite!
By all means, buy the book and try it. This is the official textbook. But if you really want to learn this art seriously, you need to get a certified teacher.Check japaneseembroidery.com for pictures and a list of teachers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful patterns, beautiful book.
This hardcover book is remarkably well put-together, looking almost like a coffee-table book and not a pattern omnibus at all. Inside there are lush patterns with flavor text about how the author thought up the project and historical notes about why she chose this or that positioning or border.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book of Needlepoint Patterns
If you love to do needlepoint, this is a wonderful book to have. I've done several projects using DMC wool, and they all turned out beautifully. I always work on 10 point penelope (double thread) brown canvas, just because I find it turns out so nicely. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of medieval designs; knowledgeable designer
Bahouth's sense of color and composition are outstanding, and her knowledge of the period make the designs not only beautiful but true.Charts are clear, and color numbers are given for both Appleton andPaternayan wool, depending upon what a stitcher has available.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Love Denim
Anyone with an interest in denim will find this wonderful book to be a very easy and enlightening read. The pictures are all bright, clear, and of high quality. There are several great images of musicians and celebrities wearing denim (Elvis, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis) as well as close-up shots of vintage jeans (The first known pair of Levis!). Not only are the pictures great, but the book is written in a manner which is easy to digest. The subject ranges from the history of denim to current trends. It also contains a glossary of terms for quick lookup so if you need to be reminded what selvage or sanfordized is, it's there for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures but sadly lacking in visual directions
I am a seasoned beader and wire worker but have only in the last few months branched off into the wonderful and adictive world of seed beads, but this book just does not have the proper amount of visual instructions even for my newness to the craft. I find my self thumbing through the pages wistfully wanting to do some of the very interesting projects with in, but sadly I have not as yet been able to put one of the projects into use. I esspecialy would like to make the tiny versions of daffodils...someday after a few more classes I hope. If you are a non visual learner and can pick it up from written instruction this book would be great for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some projects have poor directions
This is a very attractive book with lots of information about forming flowers, leaves and stems. However, I have had several problems with inaccuracy with directions.Point:I have made 7 roses per directions in the book.NONE have come out the way they look in the book.I followed the given directions and the rose was too tight...as were all the others I made.I tried not gathering to tight - same result. I tried skipping some of the contact beads and that got tricky and still didn't get the look in the book. Now,I am simply experimenting with my own ideas and see how that works. But, what a lot of wasted time, thread and beads trying to get it right!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beaded Garden

Editorial Review

Originated in the 17th century, stumpwork is a type of raised and padded embroidery that features a charming array of flowers, fruits, insects, animals, and sometimes people, all worked as delicate sculptural forms. The intricacy and detail evident in a fine piece of stumpwork is truly amazing. The sculptural quality makes this technique unique; more than just being raised off the surface in slight relief, many elements are almost fully dimensional. Fruits look ripe enough to pluck; petals and leaves seem almost to rustle in the breeze; bugs look like they've just lit on the branch. Be advised, however, that this is not a method for the timid crafter; although the book provides ample general instructions and careful analysis of individual elements before proceeding with specific projects, a good working knowledge of embroidery stitches is strongly advised. But the results are so absolutely delightful, you may want to practice honing your skills just to give this a try. Read more

"Floral Stitches" is one of the most lovely books I own.It is actually a work of art, containing soothing, pleasing, delightful, and concise, informative, and inspirational content. The stitches are well- illustrated, and useful, and Montano provides exact information from an artist's eye on how to create work with depth. You will be delighted with it!Its small enough to go into my stitching tote, and I carry it everywhere I stitch.Eye-appealing!YOu can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any serious about their craft.
Sketchbooks are typically mentioned as part of a painter or sketcher's art, but they're also an invaluable tool for modern textile and embroidery artists - and finally here's a book for this audience. Leading textile artists contribute their works and techniques to a unique coverage which follows first sketches to finished works, showing textile artists how to develop ideas, record observations, use sketchbooks for rough drafts and technique experiments, and more. Creating Sketchbooks For Embroiderers and Textile Artists is a 'must' for any serious about their craft.
