5-0 out of 5 stars Most Beautiful Book in My [very large] Collection
This is "the" book for the serious needleworker. It has the most comprehensive technique instructions of any book, ever, for gold work, painted canvas, and shading; it isn't a cutesy book of simple projects. The illustrations are excellent. The color photos are to die for: closeups of step-by-step work in progress and examples of finished work will enable you to strive for excellence in your own work. This is a teaching book with important information about threads, fabrics, frames, tools, framing up, tips ... the list goes on and on.I can't recommend this book any higher.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This book does offer insight into shading and goldwork techniques, but has few, if any, practice projects. The pictures are very lovely, but I was led to believe that there would be more patterns to practice on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Volume
For the serious needleworker, Shay Pendray's Inventive Needlework is a must-have book.Included are discussions on materials and on techniques, clearly drawn diagrams, and excellent color photographs.Examples of various techniques are drawn from both the author's own teaching pieces and from other pieces which have been exhibited at ANG National Seminars.I was particularly excited by the close-up photographs, which show stitching details clearly. (Many of the goldwork photographs were stitched on a black ground)Note that this book is about techniques, and is not a catalog of diagrams for specific stitches - there are many other reference books which fill that purpose.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eleven folk-art-inspired projects teach minature punchneedle
MINIATURE PUNCHNEEDLE EMBROIDERY: SIMPLE TECHNIQUES, BEAUTIFUL PROJECTSprovides eleven folk-art-inspired designs to illustrate the method of punchneedle embroidery. Easy techniques supplement very basic tips on equipment to get beginners started nearly instantly. Step-by-step photos in color and black and white supplement larger ones of finished results which inspire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know, all in one place
It doesn't matter whether you're new to the art of punchneedle embroidery or whether you've been doing it for a while now.No matter your level of experience, you'll find something in this book to delight you.Repasky's clear, readable style will guide newbies through every step of learning punchneedle, and her projects and finishing techniques will inspire even those who already have experience. There are resources galore, also. The photographs are very well done and give those who learn via a visual representation plenty of needed information.Every project comes with an extensive thread conversion guide, too, so whether you have an old stash of DMC floss or whether you have the latest hand-dyed floss or wool, you'll be able to execute these truly primitive, whimsical projects with no trouble at all.And they are so small, you can probably get through one of them in one or two sittings. If you want to learn punchneedle embroidery, this is a fabulous place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is an excellent book on punchneedle embroidery. This type of embroidery is becoming quickly popular and this book will tell you everything that you need to get started and have fast success. The book is great for both beginners and the experienced puncher with a number of patterns, a lot of technique, and excellent color illustrations. The author, Linda Repasky, is very knowledgable on the subject and presents clear and easy to follow instructions in this book. The book covers every area of the art and includes directions on how to frame finished work and how to make pins from your creations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic lace patterns for tablecloths or shawls
This second book of Modern Lace Knitting is great for the experienced lace knitter. I found the patterns in her first book more appealing and pretty, however these patterns are also excellent. The lace patterns are classic and are written for tablecloths and runners, however they work up very well in lace yarn for shawls or ponchos with few modifications. If you are not experienced with lace I would recommend Lavish Lace by Noble and Potter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite lace knitting
This book is a continuation of "First Book of Modern Lace Knitting" and if anything the designs are even more exquisite than they were in the first book.Neither is for the beginner but any lace knitter will enjoy the book which has the most wonderful all lace tablecloths and household linen.
5-0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful lace knitting you'll ever see
These patterns are collected from vintage knitting from over the years, and they are the best of the best. This book has a Rose pattern that looks great knitting up in wool yarn for a shawl, as well as in thinner cotton for a table cloth. This book isn't really suitable for a beginner; if you are new to lace knitting, I recommend Martha Waterman's book first, then move on to this one.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overall for Beginners
I have been knitting for the past five years and found this book to be a wonderful resource for beginners patterns and reference for basic knitting. The sketches of finishing stitches really helped me perfect my finishing, which I had been having trouble perfecting with other knitting books. The patterns are beautiful and modern, although if you are not using Debbie Bliss yarns make sure to use comparable yarns as far as the ply is concerned. The only reason that I wouldn't give the book a 5 is that there are several mistakes in some patterns. Some more recently printed copies have these corrected, but after receiving your copy I would reccomend double checking the print against the corrections noted on Debbie Bliss' website.Aside from that this is a wonderful book and I highly reccomend to beginning knitters.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a surprise!
I bought this book sight unseen as a "twofer."To my surprise it is THE best book full of practical, simple patterns for babies from newborn (a hard size to find) through 24 months.I highly recommend it for your knitting library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific designs for beginners
I hadn't knitted in over 20 years and now that I'm expecting, I saw a Debbie Bliss pattern in the UK parenting magazine "Junior" and thought the sweater was so cute that I'd give it a try. I bought some Rowan yarn from a local shop and started knitting. (You can use other yarns, but you need to make a tension square as she instructs you to in the beginning.) The sweater turned out so cute that I bought this book, in spite of the warnings that her patterns are hard to read, and I have already made the hat and booties and have ordered some of her yarn for the blanket and another sweater.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Thomas's Knitting Book
A must have knitting book.Mary Thomas, Barbara G. Walker, Elizabeth Zimmermann's and Barbara Abbey's books are all must have books for any serious knitter. You can't go wrong purchasing any of their books.Don't pass up this little gem of knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Although an old book still very useful
I was surprised to find in this book many of the things that appear in newer how-to knitting books eg the spiral sock that is on page 229, 230. And this not the only material that you will see that's in other books. In this book the material is in a rather condensed form. In the newer books it appears with color photographs and modernized. But still I find this a good book and especially at this price you can see where it all begun.

5-0 out of 5 stars The original knitting book/history
All knitters must have this book in their library.A wonderful informative book about knitting.Love this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Personalize a home with embroidery!
Embroidery projects usually focus on clothing, but they can be used to personalize a home, too - as embroiderer Kristin Nicholas demonstrates in COLORFUL STITCHERY: 65 HOT EMBROIDERY PROJECTS TO PERSONALIZE YOUR HOME. From dragonflies on pillows to lap blankets, egg cozies, and more, these colorful embroidery projects lend to gift-giving as much as home embellishment. Each comes with a full-page picture and easy details on fabric choice, notions and stitches.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is fun and provokes exploration
This book does wake you up to possibilities. Her basic point of view is very personal and might not grab everyone, but the use of color and adventurous spirit of the book is enough to get anyone off dead center..embroiderer's version of writer's block. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Great Price
I really enjoyed my copy of Quilt Revival, updated patterns from the 30's. I've had it on pre-order for some time, and when it finally came in I couldn't wait to read it. The author covers the basics, but does not linger overlong on subjects best covered in beginning books. I loved the fabric choices used by the author (I'm an Aunt Grace fiend), and in particular I like her Flying Kites block, Spring Nest quilt. This was a great book, sure to appeal to repro fabric lovers. 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Honest 1930sRevival Book
This book was first bought to my attention by a fellow quilter. It begins with a short history of quilting in the 30s followed by shorter section on color and prints. There are the usual sections on cutting and assembly aimmed at the beginning quilter. I must admit this is the first time I have seen a section on joining batting so there would be no waste. There are 11 quilts in this book. Each has a history of its block, wheither it was new in the 1930s or an old block revived in the 30s. The author cites where her pattern was obtained from. Each quilt has its own picture of the finished quilt, some in more than one color scheme. Each quilt has its own directions which I found to be very clear.I hope the author comes out with a follow up book with more of the designs from the 1930s.As she stated some of the newspapers published one a week for 10 years. That's 520 1930s designs. These are only 11 of them.

1-0 out of 5 stars major disappointment to me
i really looked forwarded to this book. in various articles in 'quilter's newsletter magazine,' and in various books on state and museum quilt collections, i've seen very interesting designs from the 1930s that were definitely of that era. for instance, one 'quilter's newsletter' article had a pieced butterfly that was charming and screamed 1930s.

In so many quilting directions the instructions say "quilt as desired."Okay....but what if you don't know how to quilt as desired? What if you don't know what you desire to quilt?Sometimes they state how the model has been quilted, but what if you don't feel confident enough to do that?Well....Mary M. Covey has given quilters patterns to "Quilt as Desired."Quilting designs, borders, and corners....oh my!Go ahead, quilters of all ranges...quilt as desired using "Follow-the-line" and know that your quilts will be desired.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixing and Matching Not Possible
This is a lovely book, but the size of the squares, among the different afghans, is not uniform. For instance, the "flower power" afghan squares are 6" x 6", and the "lithograph" afghan squares are 7 1/2" x 7 1/2".If I want to pick a few squares from each afghan and put them together in my own design, it is not possible unless I use a complicated mathematical formula to make the designs fit together, which strains my brain and takes all the fun out of the project.I wish all the squares were designed to be knit the same size, so that I could mix and match effortlessly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting patterns; heavy binding
Book is beautifully illustrated. I would have appreciated a lighter-weight front and back cover. I solved the problem for myself by carefully clipping the binding away from the spiral-bound inside instruction pages. This allowed me to take the instructions with me in my knitting bag. When I wanted to keep the book on a shelf, I could use the combined front and back covers as a folder to protect the spiral pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars pattern error
I have just started knitting the Picnic afghan, starting on p. 87. I just discovered that the directions for the Basketweave square are incorrect. Row 13 -- the purl count in the parentheses should be 5, not 6.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Crafts and Nature Together
What a wonderful little book! It's packed with seasonal table ideas and instructions for making the dolls, animals and other craft suggestions. The color photographs are inspiring. After buying this book, I immediately set out to make Mother Earth and the Earth Babies. My daughter is now a preteen, but she still enjoys having these special touches in our home. She rarely adds to the scenes anymore, but having a bit of nature around the house is comforting.During this time of growth and change, she outwardly denies her interest in such "babyish" traditions, but if I try to alter our traditions, she voices her disappointment.I think long after she's moved on, I'll continue to set up a seasonal table -- just for me!For anyone interested in starting a Seasonal Table or if you want new ideas, consider adding this gem to your craft library.

Beautifully illustrated with very clear instructions and complete patterns, this book encourages a return to genuine imaginative creativity and an awareness of natural beauty. ... Read more
