5-0 out of 5 stars The one book you'll need to get going
If you want to learn on your own, this is the book you need.I bought the paper back, took it to the copy place to cut the spine and spiral bind it with clear plastic covers. Now it stays open to the page I'm working from. Her directions are clear for every sitch and they are organized approporiately by type.Charts tell what each stitch is great and poor for.Easy to use without reading; but all beginers and re-starters should thoroughly read the begining to learn the other how-tos of needlepoint.Great for working patterns (painted canvas) or on your own designs. It may be the only book you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars My copy has gone soft from use!
I own both the first and second editions of this book. Of all the beautiful needlepoint books in my collection, this is the one I go back to over and over. There is information for the beginner as well as advanced stitcher. In eighteen years, I've never picked it up that it didn't learn something new or valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR THE "NEEDLEPOINTER"!
I have loved needlepoint now for over thirty years. Probably one of the greatest things my mother gave me was a beginners needlepoint class when I was eight years old. I basket-weaved away for many, many years. Then, I discovered this book. It took my love for needlepoint to new levels of creativity. There are so many easy to follow directions for stiches that I had never seen before. This book brought out a new and creative aspect to my stiches. From the brand new beginner to the heartend veteran, this book is a must have! I have several other guides in my needlepoint library, yet I always come back to this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These reprints are a gift!
I love to create clothing from "true" vintage knitting and crocheting patterns, which are very difficult to find in the US; and when I do nail down a source, the pattern is moldy, portions of a magazine for a particularly nice pattern have been carefully removed (as though I wouldn't notice the pagination moving from page 42 to page 59), and then the source becomes incognito.5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful selection of patterns & neeldework from the past
If you haven't begun collecting the Weldon's series yet...... Start with this book. It is SO inspirational! It features hundreds of patterns in crochet, knitting, and other needlearts, PLUS has 2 sections that I'd never even heard of before: Crinkled Tissue Paper Work and Japanese curtain work. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but worth every penny!
Have had this set in my library for over a year, but cannot say I have read every page ... but have used is for information gathering AND JUST PURE PLEASURE.A big "Well Done" for Ms. Ring!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete guide to an important period of needlework history
Betty Ring is a renowned needlework historian who really knocked herself out for this complete look at American needlework from the 1650s through the 1850s.While this two-book set may seem expensive, rest assured it's filled with color and black and white photographs of samplers, paintings, and newspaper clippings about needlework during this 200-year period. The writing is thick -- not a "day at the beach" reader, but is chock-full of information for the different time periods and areas of the U.S. covered here (the East Coast, mostly New England). There are no patterns here to follow, nor are there many descriptions of the stitches themselves. This book gives unique insight into the origin of outstanding pieces of art/needlework, and discusses at length the history of the schools that taught such work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners!
I bought this book because I wanted an easy quilt project to learn on.This was the perfect book! The instructions are clear and easy to understand, and they even give suggestions for accessories to use the leftover pieces of fabric you'll have.I made the Quartered Log Cabin quilt, using the same colors as in the book, and it turned out perfect!I made my quilt even larger by adding a border to it.I can't wait to start my next project from this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best ideas for happy holidays
I have recently started to collect Christmas decorating/gift making books and this series is by far the best I've come across! The instructions in these books are clear and easy and they show a picture so you can see how it will look. They include many gift mixes and food gifts, which I love and friends and family have always appreciated. Most of the ideas in this book can be accomplished in an afternoon, except for some of the cross stitch and crochet patterns. I am not a huge fan of country decorating; in fact my house is very contemporary. But most of the decorating tips in this book can easily be worked into any dcor. If you want to find easy, fun, quick and wonderful ideas for the holidays buy these books, you won't be disappointed. Books 1, 2 and 3 are my personal favorite. The fourth book is great to have, but I found that the recipes in that book were better than the decorating, it was a little more country and old fashioned than the other books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner to seasoned crafters
This was my first purchase of Goose Berry Patch books ,there are so many ideas fromthe begginer to the experienced crafter . Craft ideas you can personalizeto your own taste, these craft projects are easy to follow and most could be family holiday projects orcharity fundraisers .For the frugal crafter , projects arenot expensive to create , many ingredientsyou may already have in supply , as an added bonus great holiday recipe book .This book would be perfect as a gift!

4-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
I enjoy crafting as well as cooking and this book has both.I have made 5 or 6 of the recipes in the book and have alwasy gotten raves! I use this book for making many of my handmade holiday gifts and I think their instructions could not be more simple. If you love handmade items and good food idea, this is the book for you. ... Extensive technique descriptions make following the sample patterns or creating one's own as simple as possible, in this most enjoyable and enthusiastically recommended addition to do-it-yourself home craft reference and needlecraft resource collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular!
Being new to rug hooking, I was in search of a book that covered everything, from start to finish.I purchased, and read 4 other books, but all seemed to be lacking the perfect detail Pat Cross includes in all of her sections. If you are new to hooking, let this be the first book you read! Most of the other books have only black and white pictures, but her book is done in color photos- a must, if you wish to see all the detail in hooked rugs.I would definately purchase any other books Pat Cross has on this subject! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great for beading
I doubt if I will knit fromthis book, but for loomwork especially this is terrific with so many interesting patterns.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for design ideas
I guess I was a little disappointed in this book.I had expected it to be designed and arranged along the lines of The Knitting Stitch Bible.I was wrong. It is mostly a book of graphs and charts that provide only a very sketchy notion of what the knitted fabric is like.Because of this, however, the book does allow one to create interesting motifs in more than one genre.I used one of the designs for a plastic canvas needlepoint project. One does have to use the patterns with care, however, as the stitches in knitting are "stitches" whereas the stitches in needlepoint are "across the bars."In short, you can come out wrong if you don't pay attention to counting bars rather than openings. One might also use the graphs to design beaded works. The caveat on this use of the book is that the number of rows and stitches in most of the designs may produced a much larger product than you desire.Ultimately I guess, if looking for a stitch directory, I'd look at other books; there are a lot of them out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book for design ideas!
I am relatively new to knitting, and I have been searching for a couple years for a book that would just have patterns in it ..... and I've finally found it!

Included with the full size templates are shaded greys of the pattern for ease in chosing your ownmasterpiece. Twisting and twirling the log shapes gives some spectacularresults. 1-0 out of 5 stars That's great, but...crochet?
Listen to the crocheters who picked this book up only to find the one truly awful shawl pattern. The title is definitely misleading and the lack of crochet patterns was a sad disappointment. If you're really curious about this book, find it at your local library or get it through interlibrary loan. Nothing here for the crochet enthusiast.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crocheters beware!!
I was very disappointed in this book.Out of 48 patterns only ONE is crocheted and it is a very ugly shawl that resembles a big spider web - there wasn't even the obligatory granny square vest. However, if you're a knitter there are a few nice looking sweaters that might make this book worth your while -- quite a few are rated for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fashion, Finally!
I fell in love with this book while I was browsing in JoAnn's. I had only read the two reviews here on Amazon so I was leery of the title when I saw it. Lo and behold, when I opened it up I found a wealth of beautiful patterns for plus size women, and none of that frumpy, crappy "mens" sweater stuff either. They had beautiful long duster sweaters, v-necks, cowl necks... anything a plus size gal could reasonably expect. All but one of the patterns I saw went to at least a 2x, and the majority went to a 3x. Matters of taste differ, as we all know, but I found the patterns to be stylish, flattering, and interesting. Of course there were a couple I wouldn't be caught dead in, but you can't like them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bye for Stitching Lovers
This is a very useful book for stitching lovers. It has very good illustrations and explains the stiches very clearly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but ....
does not do SILK embroidery stitches at all.If this is your thing, as it is mine, you will be very sorry here.2 silk stitches and that's all.But if you do crewel and needlepoint there is literally nothing as good as this.Very clear explanations and good shots of the stitches themselves with alpha lettering to guide you...Everything is in full colour and that helps. While the word Sampler is used, there are no projects in this book as it really is a dictionary like Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery of Stitches. The difference between the two books is Mary's version shows the stitches as both embroidery and needlework while Lucinda tells you that they can be worked either way but does not show them.I guess in the end that's why there is no silk :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars 1000 great quilting designs
This compact book is a gem.Like the title says, there are 1000 patterns inside for many different block sizes and shapes. There are designs for triangles, circles, polygons, stars, borders, repeat patterns, squares, fillers, and many ethnic patterns to name a few. There are lots of styles represented from traditional patterns to art deco, as well as pictures from nature. Each pattern is marked as suitable for hand or machine quilting, and suggested block shapes for single use of the design. There's an enlargement table in the back so you can fit the pattern to whatever size block you need. There are alot of fresh new ideas here that will last you for many years.

I have been sewing clothes and stuffed toys, etc. since i was ten, but then my grandmother got me excited about quilting. i have lots of books and fabrics now, but had no specific direction. i didn't even have a clue, why my project ventures were exciting at the fabric store, but i seemed to stall when i got the fabrics home and looked over patterns. i wanted to do more with my quilts than just ordinary blocks and plain, dull borders. i had some ideas, but couldn't "get it together". i wanted something refreshing to decorate with, and also wanted to make gifts that would be really loved by all, but not much experience in this new-to-me, area. i reviewed the book and sent for it, thinking it would be good, but with every detailed, colorful, inspiring page, it was a dream come true. it gave me the answer to a question, i wasn't even aware of: something's missing, but what? It has step by step, hold your hand, detailed instructions. it's loaded with crisp, colorful pictures, front to back, that are wonderful, - nothing even remotely boring here. like it says, beautiful borders, awesome bindings, and don't underestimate the importance of the backing. there's embellishment techniques that are awesome, and fully explained with words and pictures. your fear will dissipate and joy abounds. It has all the tools and fabric information listed for each lesson, formatted, in not only an understandable way, even for a beginning quilter, but it's beyond inspiring. if you want to stop thinking and start doing, and your eager, but unfocused, and don't know why, this books for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative
I bought this book to broaden my horizons as far as adding borders to my quilts go and I am not disappointed. There are so many differnt ideas in it that I will be using them for many years to come. My quilts will now be transformed from ordinary to extradorinary with not that much effort involved, just some lessons learnt from this book. The ideas which give you the chance to expand on them and make your own additions should you wish to which is one thing I like about it. The book starts you thinking, then makes you realise that "yes I can do that".

5-0 out of 5 stars Can Kaffe please volunteer to redecorate my home?
I've always admired Kaffe Fassett so when I saw that this book was available at my local library I just had to borrow it. The colours do not disappoint and his home does not either. It is a continuous creative work in progress but it also looks very comfortable and lived in. I am not a crafty person but thanks to this book I went out and bought a latch hook, some hessian and found the bag of scrap material buried deep in a cupboard and now have a new easy hobby for in front of the TV that cost me less than $10 to get started with. His projects are achievable even for beginners and there is something for everyone. The beauty of this book is that it gives ideas and also an insight into how this fascinating man lives. It is not a specialist book but rather a broad overview of Fassett's interests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great sock book, good tips for all sock patterns and fit
I found the foot measurements very helpful in identifying how to fit a sock. The instructions for producing the short row heel and toe where very good.I haven't made any of the patterns yet, but they look very wearable.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book of theory, not patterns
I just read through my friends copy of this, and added it to my wishlist. This book describes, step by step, the theory of short row sock making.
2-0 out of 5 stars A good technical reference, but . . .
the particulars don't work. The sizing (and formula for sizing) in this book don't work for me at all.Every time I've tried to use Gibson-Roberts's formula, I've ended up with enormous socks that needed to be ripped out--one was sixteen inches in circumference. The directions for the short row technique themselves do work, but the pen and ink illustrations aren't very good.I'd recommend a more general knitting book with a chapter on socks, since the short row technique needs no more than a page or two to be explained. ...
