5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Snedden Peever is my favorite crochet designer
When I picked up this book I was surprised at the designs. They look great and straddle that fine line between conservative and boring. The yarns used are easy to find and make substitutions, and the directions are clear and easy to follow. Most of all I would wear any of the sweaters in the book. Can't wait to start crocheting more aran sweaters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of more Aran-style designs with new stitch patterns
Jane Snedden Peever's More Crocheted Aran Sweaters provides a sequel to her popular Crocheted Aran Sweaters, providing a wealth of more Aran-style designs with new stitch patterns. Thirteen sweaters and vests are created with the look of knitting cables and moss stitches, plus some crochet patterns. The stitches guide helps make professional, polished results from even the most basic beginner efforts, while the styles are contemporary and appealing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Aran Sweaters part 2
This is the second volume of crocheted Aran sweaters. The first offered a variety of patterns and styles that tempt crocheters of most skill levels to try an Aran sweater. This volume has more of a "traditional Aran" feel to it and seems to be for the more skilled crocheter, with the emphasis on cables and twists. The instructions are clear.Experienced crocheters looking for a traditional Aran look will find much to make in this book. Less experienced crocheters will be happier with the first volume. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Embroidery Ideas!!!
This is an absolutely amazing book.As a moderately experienced embroiderer and fiber arts person, I mostly drew inspiration and instruction from the many color pictures, not just of the author's embroideries, but those of her students! The embroideries pictured are just stunning. What is truly impressive is just how technically simple this embroidery style is.She does provide very complete instructions on the stitches (straight stitches, french knots, and lazy daisies are about as complicated as it gets) but mostly this book is about ideas and artistry. She provides complete directions on one example, but then clearly she wants you to branch out and embroider your own gardens and landscapes. And I was able to!I'm not the greatest artist, but using this book I've been able to create original embroidery designs that look almost as good as those in the book!If you are getting a little tired of cross-stitch or following other people's designs, this is the book for you! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Inovative use of the traditional granny
The 101 Granny squares do give several inovative uses for a traditional granny square including belts and headbands. The 101 is a bit of a stretch, however, as some of the squares for both of the ponchos are very ordinary and definitely monotoned. The directions are clear, though some projects are split across pages. The pictures are all in color and illustrate the final products well.A few of the projects are done in thread, which would make them incredibly time consuming for the final output. If 60 squares and a few really great projects will make you happy, you will probably enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars contemporary granny
Quite a worthy collection and best are two by Jackie Young of a beaded granny necklace with gold wire and her bag lady. The beaded poncho is worth the price of the book with unusual squares from several designers. A few designs have been in other collections but if you're into grannies, this is a must purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Granny Squares RULE!!!!!
Editor, Carol Alexander, has put together an extremely creative collection of 101 crocheted granny squares and 43 patterns made from these clever geometric shapes. Using materials ranging fromworsted to wire, I was delighted to see the updated versions of ponchos, sweaters, hats, scarves, bags, and headbands. There is a beautiful lace vest made with Luster Sheen. There are baby items, greeting cards, household beauties, afghans, pillows and tablecloths. The showpiece of this book is Bag Lady, a free form and granny square purse that is adorned with a fiesty, crocheted Lady! I love it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Variety of Afghan Designs Suitable for All Knitters
"The Little Box of Knitted Throws" contains 20 designs for knitted afghans and throws. Each pattern is printed on a high-quality laminated card with a full-color picture of the finished throw on the front, and the instructions for that throw on the back of the card. The advantage of the "Little Box Series" is that the knitter can take only the card for the project at hand out of the box and conveniently store it in your project bag. The box of cards closes with a handy magnetic closure. The other reviewers of this product noted missing cards or printing errors, but I'm happy to say that the cards I purchased are all intact and printed correctly.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good...but
I saw this little box of throws in at a retail bookseller, and would have bought it then, but one of the "pages" was missing. So, I came home and ordered it from Amazon. I'm satisfied, but wouldn't ya know, the only project I've done from it, I had to figure out the pattern for myself. So, beware. The publisher does have corrections to other publications on their website, but not for this particular publication. I sent an email to them with comments about the error, but did not get anything back from the publisher. I'm not an experienced knitter, but was able to figure out the error and complete one of the throws so that it actually looked like the photo. That's why I gave it an average rating.....and I'm not sure if any of the other patterns have errors. Guess I'll find out along the way!

4-0 out of 5 stars Box full of treasures!
When I saw "Cabin Cozy", I knew I had to make it!The Little Box of Knitted Throws is filled with treasures.I keep going back to decide which one I will do next! However, the pattern on one of the cards, "Ruby Knights" did not come out.The packaging of "little box" is very cool and convenient to use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS needlepoint resource!
I bought this book in order to make a truly unique seat cover for a vintage chair. The photos are great, the charts easy to follow and there is even a list of colors needed in both wool and DMC floss, depending on your preference. The results were fabulous. And this is only the second needlepoint project I've done in my life. I've bought a second book by Ms. Serena called Berlin Work and I'm looking forward to a third with Animal designs. If you're looking for some truly historical designs, this is the book for you. If you can find my website, there are pictures of my chair there. m. LAIUPPA

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have source of original needlework designs
This book is the best source I have found for original designs. Anyone looking for extremely detailed and diverse designs would enjoy this book. Most of the designs could be used directly from the photos of the charts. This book is magnificent! Truly different than any other needlepoint book Ihave seen, well worth purchasing. There is enough material to last alifetime of stiching!

5-0 out of 5 stars The finest collection of patterns and examples available.
This is the finest collection of charted historical embroidery patterns I have ever encountered. The illustration articles and patterns are of exceptional qualityand extremely well reproduced - many of the originalpainted patterns appear in a size one can work from as easily astheselection of black and white patterns produced for the book. We can onlyhope that Raffaella Serena will produce more works of this calibre. ... Read more

Editorial Review

In this lighthearted look at the magical potential of a craft that many might overlook, Morrison's fascination with puns ("what's sew magical&quot) and rhymes ("counted cross-stitches in a row make the magic really grow") not only add a touch of her good humor, but help with understanding the importance of rhyme when it comes to holding power. The 35 projects Morrison presents cover all kinds of needlecraft including: sewing, quilting, embroidery, crochet, knitting, and even the ancient arts of dyeing, spinning, and weaving. If you've never threaded a needle, this book is the perfect primer covering all the basics, both mundane and magical. If you're a pro with the thread, this book will give you a new appreciation of the magic in your own hands. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for book for witchy crafters
I loved this book. I bought this book when it first came out. And to say that I have just about done each craft in there is an understatement. The pentacle wall hanging is my favorite, and has made a wonderful gift for Yule and birthday present for pagan friends. I lost my book due to Katrina, but have added this one along with a bunch others, to my shopping list. Wonderful book and I just love Dorothy Morrison and every book she has written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good projects for the witch with a craftsy itch
I've made several of the projects and they were easy and turned out well. I have even been empowered to try quilting by this book. But I found the suggested incantations a little silly. But who needs the suggested incantations? The point is to do the projects...and I highly recommend you try some of these.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needlework with that special magic
I consider myself an experienced needle person, being well versed in embroidery and quilting.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Painting with Thread
Lovely photos of a very knowledgeable artist's embroidery techniques.Inspiration galore.Glad to add this book to my library.

4-0 out of 5 stars gorgeous work
I love the author's loose free style and the photography of the embroidery is excellent, with many, many full-sized photos. The cover photo of the multi-colored dog is representational of the work on the inside. Nice section on inspiration. My main quibble is that there is very, very little instruction for the actual stitching: five pages (mostly pictures) are it. Too much space is wasted on line drawings of the author's own work. Rather thin for the price, but beautifully executed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bold, colorful yet somewhat abstract flavor pervades
Painting With Stitches: Creating Freestyle Embroidery By Hand is a guide deftly prepared by Sue Dove for advanced embroiderers seeking to create a needlecraft project unrestricted by rigid motifs. A bold, colorful yet somewhat abstract flavor pervades the example embroidered creations, which adapt original artwork to fabric and are displayed with appealing photography. The "materials and techniques" tutorial is informative but brief, with most of Painting With Stitches being devoted to the sample vivid art creations and diagrams that captivate the imagination. A superb guide and a highly recommended source of inspiration for any experienced embroiderer who is looking to create something daring and different. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Patchwork Potholders by Lince Causee
This is a wonderful book that even a beginner can enjoy. All 101 potholders in the book can be made with ten pieces and all finish about eight inches. Some of the designs look very complicated but indeed are not!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great, simple patterns!
Although the templates given make 8" finished blocks, most of these patterns are easy to convert to other sizes.I have made many of them into 6" and 12" finished blocks, and they turn out really well. This is a "must have" book if you participate in a lot of block exchanges.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes it easy to learn the basics of quilting!
The cutting and sewing instructions are very clear and easy to follow for rotary cutting and machine or hand piecing. The potholder designs are beautiful and fun to do. I recommend this book for beginning quilters. ... Read more

Not all patterns in this book are flowers, there are also woodland animals, lovely wedding pictures/samplers and many large projects that will require some endurance to finish. Afghans, pillows, and smaller items likefruits and vegetables for jar covers and ornaments. If you like nature thisis a great pattern book to own. One can easily take out single items fromthe large patterns to embellish towels or bags. A nice book, typically withthe patterns in a small print that will have to be enlarged for easierstitching. ... Read more
