3-0 out of 5 stars spots and stripes are to big
The paper is good but the spots and the stripes are to big and don't look like the real thing when folded in to an animal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Save some money.Go buy their 40 pages of theother paper.
Look, you could just buy the 8.5x 8.5 origami paper and put your own, realistic, markings on it.It comes in solid colors and one gold paper, [...].You get 40 sheets that way.Kids love to decorate their own paper. And it is bigger than this stuff. Who ever saw an animal thatwas yellow and green?I guess a grasshopper or something, but you couldmake your own, and it would be cheaper and more fun. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lame excuses for flowers
This book was written by someone who expected its readers to be morons who knew nothing about origami. Some of the patterns don't even look like flowers, and the ones that look nice mostly require cheating - cutting with scissors or using glue. There is also a huge lack in variety of leaf and calyx patterns.Don't waste your time with these two little pamphlets. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful origami boxes book
I have most of Tomoko Fuse's Japanese books and as far as I know all of her English language ones. This is another collection of delightful boxes which includes my favourite octagonal design. She shows you in this book how to work the same design so that it has five, six, seven or eight sides as you wish and how to make suitable bases which will always fit your box. There is a nice variety of designs including simple little "docking boxes".
5-0 out of 5 stars Fuse strikes again!
Tomoko Fuse is, as any box folder knows, the epitome of designers. She is creative, practical and her illustrations are easy to follow. This book is yet one more in a continuing series of Fuse box creations that continue to delight and impress any origami enthusiast. Each and every Fuse book I have is treasured, used and re-used. I comb bind all of her books so they lay flat on my working surface.Just a hint for all you other Fuse followers!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not For Beginners
Most of these boxes are very difficult to make.I became frustrated quite often with the instructions.I thought that it was just my inexperience and lack of artisitc background, so I asked my husband to help me.He has a Master's degree in drafting, and yet had just as much trouble as I did. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars An Okay Origami Book
I have been folding origami on and off for about twenty years.I bought "Origami 1-2-3" because it looked as if it had some new things in it that I had never done before.2-0 out of 5 stars Buy Another Book
I really didn't like this book.I found the instructions difficult to follow.Sometimes I became extremely frustrated with the directions.Perhaps the problem with this book lies in the photos of the models.Diagrams, instead of the photos, would have made the models easier to make.I recommend another Origami book name "Essential Origami" by Steve and Megumi Biddle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have practiced Origami for about a year now and I was looking for a book on Origmai flowers that I would find easy to follow and learn from. I have two young children so with limited time so I wanted to pick up the art of origami flowers quickly. This book is great, the photographs make learning Origami EASY. This book has definitions of all of the Origami symbols and teaches you the base folds of the harder origami flower techniques.

2-0 out of 5 stars Title should be "paper flowers" not "origami".
If you are looking for a craft book on making paper flowers, you will enjoy this book. The word "origami" has more meaning in it, and as I got it expecting "origami" I was very dissappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Instant Classic - just add water!
Montroll does it again. This book is full of North American animals (and a couple plants) that are both fun to make, and lifelike (especially wet-folded).The book has a few decent models for all difficulty levels, with the average model probably somewhere between a 2 or 3 star. This book makes use of a few inside-out folded models (that is, the white vs. color plays a key part in the models design (snowy owl, raccoon)).I would recommend this book to all fans of origami, whether an expert or a beginning for some truly unique models.(One of my favorites is the prickly pear cactus, which is great for a wide variety of scenes).5-0 out of 5 stars Challanging and Rewarding
North American Animals in Origami is one of my favorites. While most of the models took me a few stabs at the results are very rewarding.Montroll's style and clearly defined directions make his models a joy and challenge to fold. Here is the following models in "North American Animals in Origami":Duck, Swan, Heron, Roadrunner, Saguaro Cactus, Prickly-Pear Cactus, Jack Rabbit, Mouse, Armadillo, Bald Eagle, Bighorn Sheep, Bobcat, Great Horned Owl, Quail, Pheasant, Squirrel, Beaver, Black Bear, Coyote, Bison, Raccoon, Deer, Snowy Owl, Musk Ox, and Moose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some pearls in it
In fact I give this book 4.5 stars. For most experienced folders, the first half models of this book cannot satisfy them. And along the rapid development of origami science these days, this book seems staying in thepast time. However, there are some true gems in it. I like Montroll's Moosevery much.(I think it is the best moose design so far) And I very much likethe models contributed by Japenese origami nova Fumiaki Kawabata (this bookis first published in 1995, and now in 1999 he is really a superstar inorigami world). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good range of projects
This book is great for all, beginer / intermediate / advenced. It has a wide range of projects that are fun to make, but some are very difficult. I would recomend this book for not-so-serious folders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book!
This book has lots of color photos and pretty simple instructions. I would not exactly recommend this book for beginners. Most of the projects are pretty easy, but there are a few that are tricky and time consuming. Over all a pretty good book to have in you collection if you into Origami.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners
This is a very good book for beginners to cut their teeth on.Some very good projects that are practical as well as fun to make. The only drawback of this book would be the lack of history regarding origami, etc.I wouldhave been interested in learning more about how origami came about andevolved into its present form. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old son loves the origami treats!
There is a variety of origami "things" to choose from.I'm no origami expert, but I can build these. There are birds that flap their wings, and a frog that "jumps".And there are even a couple of paper airplanes that are cool. They fly better than any paper airplanes I've ever seen. This is a nice activity for a parent to share with a small child.I let him pick an origami toy, he watches me make it, then we play with it together. I comes with some origami paper (at least mine did) in a pocket at the back of the book. Great family fun!

3-0 out of 5 stars it is a great book for beginners but it has its low points
this was the first origami book I had. It is great for people beginning because it has very easy crafts to some harder crafts to challenge beginners. I wouldn't though recomend this to experienced folders and ituses some kirogami techniques in the models so watch out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the avid folder
The first half of this book is completly narrative. It explains origami in a way no other book I've read has.By showing the traditional bases as variations on a theme and then extending that theme Engel shows origami creators (not just folders) how to overcome the limitations in a piece of paper. The ties to music, fractals, geometry, the act of creation, the boundry of science and art, and computers really gets you thinking. The narrative is nice for the beginner and the advanced folder.4-0 out of 5 stars Engel's unique perspective brings out the art in origami
Never before have I seen an origami book that brings in so much art, design, and mathematics. Not only does Engel make incredible and very challenging origami, but his sense of design makes it a delight to see come about. His first 81 pages are introduction and theoretical discussion of origami and the design concepts behind the artform. While he may be a bit esoteric at times, his discussion is quite interesting as he delves into fields ranging from music to geometry to architecture. The models show wonderful 3-D realism for the most part and will pose a challenge to all but very advanced folders (and if you still need a challenge use smaller paper). I especially enjoyed the octopus, squid and knight on horseback. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst pictures ever
What struck me most about Origami Flowers was the horrible quality of all photographs in the book.It looks like they were digitized at low resolution and then enlarged way more than possible.Instead of a picture you get several squares in varying shades of gray all arranged together.Darker squares near the center tell you that there would be a flower there if the editor had bothered to make it so.
1-0 out of 5 stars How did this pass print check?
The illustrations are terrible in this book. Even though the book is black and white, the illustrations of completed projects are fuzzy and grainy. They look like a bad fax. 1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a headache!!
This is a horrible book! The illustrations are cryptic and what little written instruction there is is poor. The entire book is in Black and White and makes it difficult to read the folding instructions. If you're looking for a fun and simple time creating origami flowers LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE!This book is only filled with hours of frustration and headaches.I've been trying to fold the flowers in this book for a week and have yet to complete a single one! ... As you can see from the other reviews that it is a good collection of models to fold.If you are interested on what the models consist ofthere are 26 of them and they are the Crane, Duck, Swan, Goose, Sparrow, Swallow, Sitting Cat, Sitting Dog, Eagle, Parrot, Apatosaurus, Rabbit, Squirrel, Horse, Bear, Bison, Anteater, Crane, Ibis, Kangaroo, Coyote, African Elephant, Lion, Hippopotamus, Crocodile, and Horse with Rider.Happy Folding.

4-0 out of 5 stars More of the same
Montroll's books usually rate 5 stars when compared with other origami books in the market but when compared with his other books, it rates only 3 stars, or average, hence the title, "more of the same". Peoplewho have folded many of Montroll's models would know what I mean.5-0 out of 5 stars Montroll's best book yet!
John Montroll has done it again with his newest book, Bringing Origami to Life. I think that the book is wonderful in that the models can all be wet folded, which allows them to be shaped and molded to suit the folder.Mypersonal favorite is the howling coyote...which, looks incredible foldedfrom grey paper! The seamless backs help to make the models more threedimensional as well. This is a must have for the origami artist that wantsto explore diversity and creativity with wet folding! I highly recommendit! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awful
It's really quite incredible how many contradictive meanings the author can apply to a single word in this book. Just because "open" or "fold" means one thing on one page does not mean that it will mean the same thing on the next. Indeed, oftentimes the meaning will be entirely different, even the exact opposite, although it is rarely that simple. Thus, the instructions are sketchy and confusing at best. The pictures accompanying the instructions often seem to mysteriously morph into an entirely different shape between different steps, with no explanation of exactly how they developed their new folds or creases. For example, one will read step one and complete it, move on to step two, and find that the picture indicating step two is much more folded-up and advanced than than yours, and the steps detailing how to get it into that shape and level mysteriously absent.
1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible written instructions, mediocre pictures
This is the worst origami book I have ever used (or in its case, attempted to use). The directions are horribly unclear; it seems that this author thinks that whatever she means, she can say "open it to the top".Four completely different folds she describes as opening it to the top.My, that's not helpful. Also, you just have to guess if valley or mountain folds are meant, because for both identical dashed lines are used and both are described as "fold".It's terribly confusing to have to make models just by looking at the pictures, when several folds can yield identical-looking results from the camera's angle, thus leaving the folder with all sorts of superfluous creases and frustration. In short, do not buy this book!I wouldn't even waste my time checking it out of the library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not "traditional" origami, but great results
Lots of beautiful animals in this book, as the title implies. However, often the written instructions were not clear, making it easier to look at the photographs to figure out the step. The photos were outstanding! If you get this book, write notes to yourself on each step so you remember the next time! I didn't like the fact that you had to cut and glue some of them, but they turned out so nice, I was willing to overlook this fact! ... Read more
