5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite origami book
I do origami as a hobby, using the results for presents for friends and family. This has been my favorite origami books since I first discovered it.The instructions are very good; I have usually been able to understand them during my first attempt at a design. If you're just beginning origami, with no previous experience, there is an explanation of the folding symbols on the back of the front cover. However, there are no detailed beginners explanations, so, unless you feel up to it, you may not want to get this book if you have never done origami before. If you do have a little experience, this is a very good book. Some of the designs are more simple than others, and even the simple designs look good.I am always annoyed at "easy origami" books that are easy, but have horrible looking designs. This is not the case with this book, and, in fact, I have created some beautiful origami mobiles using only designs found in this book. There may not be as much variety in this book as you might find in other origami books, but you can be reasonably certain that you'll be able to fold all the designs found in this book.I have yet to encounter an origami book that I have gotten as much use out of as this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to your Treasure Chest
This is a wonderful book.I first saw it at the library and knew that I wanted to purchase it.What caught my attention was that the origami pictures inside were actual colored photographs--not drawn pictures. It definitely helps alot more when you see the actual photographs. It makes folding origami much easier!5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to your Treasure Chest

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely origami book
This lovely book would make an ideal gift for the enthusiastic paperfolder who has mastered his or her basic models. It contains an attractive collection of geometric style models such as unusual little boxes, vases and abstract decorations for placing around your home. There is also a collection of items such as chopstick holders and various kinds of stationery and envelopes. There is even a delightful collection of stars and snowflakes which would be wonderful for the festive season in making decorations and cards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty but not encyclopedic
Okay, first what I didn't like."Encyclopedia."Nope.Not by a long shot.Even counting the endpapers, the book is only 168 pages in length.Admittedly it's in 10 pt font size, but it's filled with photos--lovely ones--and there's no way you could write an encyclopedic work on origami in so limited a space. There's just too much to say about it, and most of it would probably bore the average person to death. One suspects that they've running out of unused descriptive titles for books on origami, and"encyclopedia" had not been used yet. For something a little closer to an encyclopedia--although even here it's moot--I'd look at Origami Omnibus or Origami for the Connoisseur, both by Kunihiko Kasahara--the latter book with Toshie Takahama. These at least integrate something of the geometrics and mathematics of origami.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable projects, nice results, good book
One of the better origami books, The Encyclopedia of Origami does one of the best jobs of describing and illustrating how to make the folds that I have seen. That is usually the biggest problem with origami books, how do you describe and illustrate an unusual fold? This is a three-dimensional activity illustrated in a two-dimensional medium and is difficult to describe well.Author Nick Robinson does a great job and all the folds on the projects I did were easy to figure out.
3-0 out of 5 stars The models in the cover do not have diagrams inside!
This is a very nice book to look because it has several models of many talented origami designers, but these diagrams are not in the book. The book have some diagrams for simple models of Nick Robinson, but not much. A good book to look at, but very expensive. ... Read more

I gave this book a five stars because of the idea/pics included. It starts out talking about safety, tools needed, and working with gel. It address containers,bubbles,coloring/ fragrances, adding glitter, nesting the candle in a water/flower arrangement, using embeds( wax, clay, glass, agates, beads, wire, sea glass, pins), selecting wicks, making cameos for embeds(very original),using gold leaf inside candles, silhouette candles, color swirling, and gel floating candles.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
The models are very easy for an experienced folder and turn out beautiful.Everybody whom Ihave shown them to was amazed. The figures are wonderful and are great gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and interesting designs
I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and can't seem to stop folding...The instructions are easy to follow, provided you know a little bit about origami (just some basic folding techniques, which you can learn online.) The designs are very interesting, though very time consuming. Block out some time to do this! When I finished my first Kusudama piece, I was so pleased at how beautiful it was. I have experimented with lots of different papers and achieved great results, even with papers that were not japanese. My favorite is the bouquet of lilies, which is stunning in bright colors. I definitely recommend this book to those who would like to pick up a new hobby and wow their friends and family with amazing gifts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glue and string required -- just so you know!
I guess I was spoiled by the wonderful boxes and stars and balls and all, but for some reason I was expecting these to follow her previous practice of assembling without recourse to glue and/or string. These, however, in the fashion of traditional kusudama, do require the inclusion of materials other than paper.I found this a bit disappointing...Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Holiday Origami
This slim paperback volume includes instructions for 24 Jewish origami projects, along with a black and white photograph and a brief explanation of each project's historical and spiritual significance. The introduction provides basic information about origami and explains how Judaism can be expressed through this ancient paper folding art.The table of contents lists the projects by level (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) and by Jewish holiday (Sabbath, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Purim, Passover, and Shavuot). While not nearly as attractive as Florence Temko's Jewish Origami, Jewish Origami II and Bible Origami, which include full-color photographs and diagrams as well as origami paper, Stern's edition is more comprehensive and content-rich - a worthwhile addition for libraries that collect Jewish craft books. For ages 8 and up.Reviewed by Rachel Kamin

5-0 out of 5 stars Festive Paper Magic
Books devoted to themed origami, like hearts, fairy tales, flowers and dollhouses, have always held a special fascination and charm for paperfolding enthusiasts and have attracted some of the world's great origami designers. Florence Temko blazed the Jewish and bible origami trails. Now, Joel Stern has created 25 festive models for his new book, "Jewish Holiday Origami". The models in "Jewish Holiday Origami" are well-designed and diagrammed, easy to master and ideally suited for diorama displays. The three dimensional pyramid may be one of the best 11-fold pyramids ever created! And with a few more creases, it is transformed into a Purim pastry! All in all, Stern's designs are a pleasure to fold. Clever maneuvers abound and a crease here and repeated crease there often yield hidden surprises and delights. Many of the models like the wine glass, pastry/tart, pyramid, candles, human figures with display stand, book, frog, goat face and meat bone can be folded and enjoyed all year round, adding to their versatility and timelessness. Models in "Jewish Holiday Origami" are conveniently indexed by experience level (beginner, intermediate and advanced) and by holiday (Sabbath, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Purim, Passover and Shavuot).

5-0 out of 5 stars Paperfolding for Purim, Passover and more!
What a great idea, superbly executed! By following Stern's simple steps, enhanced with 'this is how it should look' photos, one can decorate and learn about the Jewish holidays. I'm looking forward to putting the Four Sons on the Seder table according to who's who. There is even 'Two Zuzim." Each origami object is rated according to difficulty so that the 'craftsman' does not immeditely get frustrated by starting with the more difficult ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars African Animals, another classic
For all you John Montroll fans out there, buy this book. For everyone else, buy this book also!It is one of the best books for animals, with a wide variety of difficulty levels. From simple 'grass' to complex striped zebras, this book has it all.I enjoyed making some of the more unique models, like the bee-eater and rhinoceros.Another nice thing about this book in particular is that the models are much different than what are in many other books.Because the theme is Africa, a lot of the animals in this book I have never seen made in another book.(Some however, have been made elsewhere, and quite honestly, better, such as the elephant and gorilla).5-0 out of 5 stars Animals, Animals, and More Animals..
This is a great book for experienced folders. This one along with North American Animals makes a great pair. One thing I find missing in most reviews is the contents is so here it is.There are 24 models in African Animals in Origami and they are Grass, Tree, Sacred Ibis, Crowned Crane, Flamingo, Crocodile, Hippopotamus, Snake, Chameleon, Bee-Eater, Hoopoe, Hornbill, Gorilla, Chimpanzee, African Elephant, Ostrich, Vulture, Aardvark, Rhinoceros, Gazelle, Lion, Zebra, Giraffe, and Spotted Giraffe.Happy Folding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reprint of th 1988 book
This is essentially a reprint of the 1988 book with a new cover. That said, I have to admit that anyone who didn't purchase a copy of that volume at the time is indeed lucky to have the opportunity presented to them again in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars delightful
This is a huge volume with a large variety of subjects presented. Going from memory, there are masks, dinosaurs, animals, boxes, modular polyhedrons, and more. It would be hard for one to leaf through this book and not find at least a few models that are "must-folds".5-0 out of 5 stars Great all-around origami book
Origami Omnibus has a wide spectrum of models, so everyone can enjoy this book.I like it because it has easy models, but also hard ones that I am still working on.It has a lot of modular origami, which is one category I enjoy. This book explains how geometry and origami are alike.I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys origami. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Only Six Designs - All Easily Found Elsewhere
Money Folding by Florence Temko is hard pressed to be called an origami instruction book. It's more like an origami instruction flyer. There are literally only 11 pages of instructions - plus 1 page of introduction, and 2 pages of tips at the end.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Magic Wand Is Worth the $7
The directions are well done, but this booklet "Money Folding " is just that---a BOOKLET. It has only 6 projects which are shown on the beautifully photographed cover. If you don't think that the 6 projects on the cover are worth the $7 price tag then you will be disappointed. (Add postage to that price if you aren't wise enough to group your purchases to get free shipping). I bought it because I loved the heart shaped "magic" wand on the cover. The wand is fabulous and has been a big hit with the kids who have received them from me. I would have paid $7 for just the wand directions but I also liked all of the 6 projects. As another poster reported, I also use a folded money project to leave as a tip in restaurants. BTW--I bought "Money Folding 2" by the same author because I liked the flower in a pot project on the cover. I was not as thrilled with that project as I was with the wand but I learned how to do it and then passed the booklet onto a school teacher.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment
I've never felt the need to write a review until today...after waiting anxiously for this book, at first appearance I could not believe that the only folds in the book are the ones you see pictured on the books cover. And if that weren't disappointing enough, the directions were lacking a few of the steps required to make the designs.I am amazed that someone can actually get a book like this one published...big waste of money and I'm sending it back! ... Editorial Review

Relatively new to the candle-making kingdom, gel is a readily available, adaptable substance that can be transformed into all sorts of fascinating candle looks. By melting the jelly-like goop, adding color and perhaps fragrance, and pouring into a heatproof container with a wick, anyone can whip up one-of-a-kind candles. Dawn Cusick's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative & Beautiful Candles to Make
This book is fantastic,I really love all the information.Excellent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some ideas worth considering
This book does have some pics with short wicks(which the candlemaker could fix) and one or so of the crafts could be fixed differently to keep the wicks away from embeds. The rose candle on p.49 could still work in a larger container with a shorter wick. The paper used in the candles is against the glass and away from the wick. As with all crafts, the crafter can use his judgement and change around things. That said.4-0 out of 5 stars Creative and helpful
I don't know what either the Michigander or the Nashbabe are talking about.Rankin goes into depth about flash point and the importance of a clip-on thermometer and the dangers of gel.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Math in Motion:Origami in the Classroom
As a homeschool parent and teacher this book has been a wonderful resource. My nine year old son, Jack, and I love using it. I tell all my homeschooling friends about it as well as friends whose children struggle with math in school. When I asked Jack about a review, he said, "You must tell everyone that I love this hands on approach!" I also tutor a young lady who admitted that she hated math, but I convinced her to have a go by using Math in Motion and she now loves to fold, feels she can can attempt a math problem without falling apart and is open to a hands on approach to learning about place value, which we have just started. Thank you, Ms Pearl

5-0 out of 5 stars Math in Motion - a totally enjoyable learning experience
Although I am neither a teacher nor a grade schooler, I found exceeding pleasure, while reading "Math in Motion," in brushing up on aspects of math that I had long ago forgotten. But beyond the math, I thoroughly enjoyed making the origamis depicted in the book. While using this book to create each of the origamis, I found the instructions easy to both read and follow.(Of course, the spiral binding is yet another much-appreciated feature.)I had never been successful in Japanese paper folding before in my 60+ years, even though I had attempted it several times, and so it was exciting for me to complete my very first origami!5-0 out of 5 stars Origami is Therapeutic!
I purchased Math in Motion for my first semester of student teaching. One of the students in the Learning Support Class has Asperger's Syndrome. He was especially agitated and noncooperative and the only thing he responded to was when I started to do origmai. He was fascinated with the Jumping Frog and the movements and the patterns. 5-0 out of 5 stars A History Lover's Delight!
This is one of the best books by Ms Grafton. The images are colorful, sharp, and clear. Ms Grafton provides authentic advertisements from the turn-of-the-century, as well as furniture, cars, luggage, and cigar ads. Many of the graphics are old photographs. This decoupage book is simply beautiful and very useful, also containing the old stand-bys such as holidays, butterflies and flowers. Highly recommended!
