4-0 out of 5 stars A New Way of Teaching Origami
This book is excellent to teach middle school students the art of origami. There are many different designs that students will enjoy. Students enjoy origami with complicated folds and this one has several ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great ornament book!
I don't agree with the review saying there were problems.I have made the Lantern and many others without any problems. The instructions are very clear and the results are great looking!I especially like the fact that they are "pure" origami (no glue or cutting required).3-0 out of 5 stars Very good but with problems
Kusudams without glue: a pleasure! I made the Two-Dimesional icon ,Three-Dimensional icon, Wheres up? (i very love this last) (7 squares for all). The Cube (20 squares) is wonderful because it have something as wings. The Magic cube (14 squares) look good too. The Tristar (6 squares) need a pair of tweezers but his form is very pleasant (triangle). But i had some problems with others. The Lantern and the Lightstar lantern didnt need squares the same size! This book havent pictures inside. When ill made others kusudamas ill write to tell what i think of the rest. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great - with some caveats
I'm not really an origami fundamentalist, but I prefer modulars that hold together without glue.Miyuki's models are wonderful, but many of them do require glue.I've overcome my aversion and enjoyed them greatly, but you should be aware of the fact that it takes a little more than simple folding for these!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands Down the Best
This is hands down the best book about making modular origami polyhedron I have ever encountered (I own about 6 or so books on the topic). The text does an excellent job of presenting three different ways (solid, skeletal, and outline) to make each of the five platonic solids.Towards the end there are also sections about how to make some stellated polyhedron and polygon tiles. Two things make this text wonderful for the beginning folder. Each fold is lucidly diagrammed and includes a well written explanation. The full color text is an added bonus. If you're interested in getting started as a polyhedron folder, this is the best place to begin.Happy folding.:) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of everything all in one book!
I look for several things when I buy an origami book: I want actual pictures of someone folding the paper, not diagrams. This book has that! Also, I look for a variety of shapes to fold. This book has flowers, snails(!), and dragons. I also look for simplicity, since I am an intermediateorigamist. I had no trouble making every one of these projects work. I wasdelighted with the pictures, the variety, and the simplicity. It starts offwith easy projects and moves on the harder ones. I highly recommend this tobeginners as well as intermediates. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book on origami
Of the many Oriental art forms that have entered Western culture, few is more accessible and enjoyable as origami.Known primarily thru the paper crane, this Japanese art form is actually quite complex and capable of producing a wide variety of objects from paper. This book by Isao Honda showcases many of these objects such as birds, insects, mammals, vehicles, etc... along with the instructions on how to make them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect...
In the 1970s, my grandfather used to send origami books home from Japan. The prize was the big hardcover by Isao Honda.
4-0 out of 5 stars Getting started in Origami? This book is a good start
I give it 4 out of 5 stars, because when I learned origami, I had the unabridged book and liked it a bit better (or else I am just being nostalgic.)My grandfather taught me as a child to do origami. He could make a fantastic toy concertina that you could "play." This book has a lot of fun animals, using the two paper technique. I like that, because you can learn units that are similar and get an origami portfolio fairly fast. The selection of interesting boxes is fun, too.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Expected more pictures of how to
I will agree that this book has a wealth of information, such as history and useage of candles, along with good descriptions of the types of candles, etc.But what it lacked was good pictures showing step by step processes of candlemaking. It described a lot of things in text, but I am a picture person. Also I didn't find anything about Soy candles.Anyway, I was a bit disappointed due to the lack of pictures.

3-0 out of 5 stars For beginners only
If you've never made a candle, or done pour-and-mold soap, this book will tell you how.It will also warn you of every concievable mishap you could encounter. In today's litigious society, I suppose that's required, but it did detract from the rest of the work, in my opinion. Then again, I was looking for pointers and updates on materials, since I hadn't made any candles since the late 1980's.In that regard, it introduced me to soy wax and a few products I did not know existed.

4-0 out of 5 stars The New Origami : Dozens of Projects Using the Newest Kinds of Origami: Modular, Puzzle, Storytelling, Practical, Symmetrical, a
Fantastic book for the more experienced folder. The detailing of the models is exquisite!

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing instructional book...
"The New Origami" is quite possibly the greatest beginner book there is... it has incredibly good diagrams and very clear text instructions to go along with each one... it's projects range from very basic to high intermediate (I don't think any other beginner book even attempts to take you as far as this one does). On a whim one day I picked up this book and "Brilliant Origami", having never done origami in the first place (aside from flapping birds and paper airplanes)... after completing "The New Origami" I was able to tackle even the hardest models in "Brilliant Origami" (which is an intermediate to advanced book if ever there was one).Since then I've collected many origami books (old to new, simple to complex), and I've yet to find another book that I'd recommend above "The New Origami" for someone wanting to get into the world of paper folding.

5-0 out of 5 stars New and innovative Origami book
The diagrams are extremely clear and the illustration of the hands position combined with the text, helps the creation of extraordinaary models. The Pterodont (seen in the cover) produces an amazing result. Just one advice: Use at least 9"x9" paper, so you can get the best effect from the claws. With a little patience and a few days, one can make a very cool mobile with pre-historic animals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing
Issei Yoshino was an Origami virtuoso who, unfortunately, passed away in his early 30s. One of his legacies was this magnificent model. For people acquainted with Montroll, Lang, Maekawa, and other masters works, the components should not pose a big challenge. The model is laborious because it involves making several components, but the good news is that they are all made from the same size square. Once it is done, the display is certain to marvel all the ones who see it. This book makes for a fine addition to anybody's Origami library.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing
This is not the first dinosaur skeleton made from several sheets of paper and it is not the last. What makes this one stand head and shoulders above the rest is that the artist set out to create one where all of the pieces were made from the same size piece of paper. It is much easier to get a bunch of paper the same size than to cut and trim for multiple sizes.Read more

The first 17 pages of this book deals with safety, materials, molds, gel subjects, types of embeds, how to place embeds, wicks and positioning wicks, coloring/scents,using glitter, containers, and decorating containers. This is neat in it's own way because it gets that stuff out of the way, while other authors use it to fill up their books.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful origami book
This super book will please any paperfolder from the beginner who has done his or her basic models through to expert level. Models range from the Tomoko Fuse six piece lizard, the modular brocade ball and modular super complex star shown on the cover through to Tsudo's delightful little simple frog and Adolfo Cerceda's wonderful Peacock with the clever lock to the tail devised by Paul Jackson.
5-0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece of selection and exposition
Every piece I have folded from this book has impressed me. I focused on objects to share with my 5 year old and 2 year old. Each model delighted me with the elegance and simpilicity of its design. The expositions are little masterpieces of economy and clarity. I am used to seeing drawn origami diagrams and was skeptical about the use of photographs. However, the author does a superb job of supplementing the photos with just the right amount, and kind, of verbal explanation. Moreover, the designs have a contemporary and hip look to them. Ever folded a paper hat out of newspaper? Well, here Rick Beech shows you how to fold 5 different paper hats in a series, with the same piece of paper! If I had to use one word to describe the qualities in this book, it would be "clever". Note, the edition I have is called "The Origami Handbook".5-0 out of 5 stars The book that got be started
This is my first origami book bought sometime in November 2002, which got me interested in Origami.I remember being very impressed with the beautiful color photos.Since I was a new folder then, I could easily understand the photo instructions when I first got it, but now I prefer diagrams.Interesting background information on origami and introduction to some origami celebrities makes this book an enjoyable read. There is a photograph of the author with a large elephant model, which got me interested in folding from large paper (60 cm x 60 cm or more).Models ranges from very simple party trick to impressive modular. The beautiful photographs make me want to fold all.I folded my first elephant from this book, a simple one, but very effective in representing the animal.I often drool over the colorful modular models, especially the Flexagon Firworks... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Great Directions
I had the honor of proof reading the diagrams in this book before it went to print.(I'm the second Mark in the dedication).John Montroll is a brilliant author. His style is amazing, achieving maximum model size from the paper. This is a great book for everyone who enjoys dinosaurs and origami.

5-0 out of 5 stars Montroll Shows His Best, Again.
A book about dinosaurs folded from paper, a simple idea, really. But take a deeper look, and this is one of the most engaging origami books on the subject ever-for that matter, perhaps it is one of the best origami books ever.I know it is one of my top ten books.Enough praise, you want to know what's in it.Well, as Montroll usually does, the beginning models are so easy, I think you could fold them from sheet metal...an egg, mountain, and tree.Soon though, the dinosaurs begin, and slowly but surely the difficulty rises, until culminating with a Stegosaurus.Other dinosaurs include, T-rex, a bunch of gliding dinos, and others such as Dimetrodon and Spinosaurus.I would recommend this to any Dinosaur fan, and/or origami fan. However, a true beginner would find this book to be boring, because after the three 'sheet metal' models, the difficulty rises 2 or 3 fold.If you can make the first 4 or 5, you can probably learn to make them all.In short, a great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love dinosaurs!!
When i saw a dinosaur origami book i didn't think twice before buying it!I was bored with simple books making kitties and ducks, but these designs are very ORIGINAL!They are tricky and i often get frustrated with the complicated folds, but when i get a folded dinosaur all of my own in the end, I am so happy!!(No, I'm not a child either i just love dinosaurs!)I own a few origami books and have found this one is a favorite pick, besides the dinosaurs, i just love complicated folds! If you love dinosdaurs, origami, and a stiff challenge this book is for YOU! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Reference for Modular Enthusiasts
This slim volume has a some nice features that make up for a lack of illustrations and model photos, including a clever pentagon template, tips for cutting equilateral triangles & hexagons, and suggestions for cutting multiple pieces for the projects. I especially enjoyed working with the triangle, simple square, and the spike ball modules, which I used to make solid, satisfying models. The "triangle edge module" can be used to make a nice tetrahedron or an icosahedron (which helped me see the relationship between that shape and a dodecahedron).I skipped a couple of spiky models that required glue, butI was generally very pleased with the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's cheap. You can do better for a few more bucks.
