5-0 out of 5 stars A good first origami book
This book has a collection of origami patterns. Most are simple. There are even instructions for a paper airplane.A few like lily are more complex.I am decent at origami.I have bought other books but this is one of the two that I return to again and again over time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best is back
My Great-Aunt introduced me to many things - astronomy, biology, and origami. This was in her personal library and when I'd visit we would always pull it out and make at least one of the figures in the book. She had already managed to do nearly every figure but she was patient and I would try my best to keep up.When she died, I looked for the book but it had mysteriously disappeared.I saw that it was back in print and I snatched a copy up right away. This is the best folding book that I have ever run across. It has models that range from the very simple to the VERY difficult. You can fold out of this book for a lifetime and never fail to learn something or see something new.A great book... grab it while you can and fold your heart out!

5-0 out of 5 stars A legend
The book which launch my interest in origami in the late 60s. If not for the discovery of this book, my interest in origami would have been lost.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Great Classics, Finally back in Print
Rejoice, origami lovers of the world: Harbin's "Secrets of Origami" is back on the shelves. One of the first of my 40+ origami books, the old, battered, early 70s hardcover still holds a place of honoron my shelf. This is one of the best origami books EVER published.Forthe beginner, it opens the door to a wonderful array of simple to complexmodels, for the advanced folder, it provides a survey of the best Westernfolding from that formative period of 1960s.Fred Rohm, Adolfo Cerceda,Ligia Montoya - these are names that must NEVER fade from the annals oforigami.Buy this book. Use this book. Treasure this book.Very few likethis have been printed before or since. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So easy you'll be drawing knots within hours
Wonderfully written with detailed pictures from the Book of Kells as wellas others showing the underlying layout of the actual knotwork. Thetechniques shown are SO easy and SO basic, it's a wonder that this isn'tmore popular. I thought to myself before I purchased this book that it wasgoing to take a lot of practice and time to get it right, but the first dayI was actually drawing knots! The second day I was learning how to bendthem into borders and other shapes. If you ever thought that you'd like tolearn how to draw knotwork, you can! Buy this book and you'll be drawingwithin hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best moethod I've seen
Yeah, the method is technical.A T-Square and triangle are helpful. But for complex, good looking designs, this is the book to use.5-0 out of 5 stars construction of celtic knotwork
This book is the only one that I have seen that shows you enough of the construction of celtic knotwork to enable me to modify existing designs. If you simply want to copy things, the dover art series is the book for you. If you wish to get into the details of the art enough to create freshdesigns or to 'straighten bent borders' and 'bend straight borders' or cutthings in half, this is the book for you. After reading it I found that Ialso noticed things in existing art that I had never looked for before.Prior to reading this book I had tried to freehand modify certain designs, and met with fairly, though I am a fair sketcher. With this book I wasable to modify a design for my purposes, and then using a chalked grid, draw it from scratch on leather, to use in quillworking. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Teaching Guide I have Seen
This book gives the best, eastiest to understand instructions as compared to any other origami book I have seen. Most books have only black and white diagrams with and hard to follow written instructions that include vocabulary many beginners are not yet familiar with. Not so with this book!!It has color photos of the folding instructions with great written direction.I got this book at the library about 2 hours ago and already had to buy a copy of my own.I am sure it will be a great reference tool even as I build my skill level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way Too Easy!

5-0 out of 5 stars i'm retarded and i could do this...so can you
I just got this out from the library and it's great! I'm just about to purchase it. The pictures are super helpful, the instructions are pretty easy, you may have to re-read them but you'll have to w/ any origami book. I don't know if they tell you this or not but it comes w/ 10 sheets of paper (at least i think it does). They teach you a lot of basics, and they have easy and hard projects, so it pretty much makes everyone happy. enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Your Average Origami Book
I am a beginner folder, so I was more than a little challenged by the folding diagrams and directions in this book, which are clearly meant for more intermediate folkniks. However, with a little patience and fiddling, I have grown accustomed Engel's style of instruction, and enjoy puzzling out the assembly of his neato-keen models. Not only that, but the experience has enabled me to better interpret some of the diagrams I find on the web, which invariably have far less verbal instruction or may be in a different language altogether, though the symbols (arrows, dotted lines, et c.) are fairly standard.
4-0 out of 5 stars wanna learn history & philosophy?
this book is for advanced...first half is about history & philosophy of Origami & Zen. origami instructions are NOT for beginers. I was looking for somthing simple to teach my kids, so I needed to return it. But, as for the price it's a good book if you are looking for those stuff. the book is all black & white (no color pages), that's one of the reasons I did not like it (but what do you expect for $12?)

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book intended for hardcore aficionados
This is the most challenging origami book I have ever seen.Although I have grown up with origami and consider myself very experienced, I am still not able to complete some of the models near the end of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging, but worth it
The planes in this book are amoung the most challenging I have seen in a published book. I'll admit that I haven't completed them all yet, but that's because my younger brother took the book. A number of the planes look very similar to their real-life counterparts and still fly well if made correctly.1-0 out of 5 stars I am mad!
The directions were very hard to follow.I could not make one thing. The author left out many steps.I would have gave it 0 stars if i could.DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars very frustrating even for those advanced at origami
This book is very frustrating even for those advanced at origami. The author seems to skip a whole lot of steps. To that end, most of the author's instructions tell you to make a great deal of complicated folds, then tells you to unfold them all completely and then tells you "to use your imagination" to make it look like the final step.Oddly enough, if you are that good at doing origami, you simply would not need this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This one's a classic.
This book was originally published in the 70s under another title. My High School library had a copy.5-0 out of 5 stars Best Value for Money
This is one of the best.30+ model in a thin and inexpensive volumn. It's really step-by-step if you fold the model page-by-page.I recommend beginners not to skip.It really like an exercise book. For advance folders, there are many great models to fold.Because of this step-by-step approach the number of diagrams are kept to the minimum.Beginner picking models (not from the start) will find this a difficult book to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the advance folders
Although I have started folding for about 3 months, I would consider myself as an advance folder having folded models such as Voyer's horse, pegasus, Brill's elephant, Ronald Koh's rocking horse, etc.The first time I came across this book, the cover say "step by step", so I skip it.During my last visit to the local book store I browsed through it by chance and was pleasantly suprised.30+ models and mostly advance, for just US$4.95, what a great deal! The diagrams are not "step by step", but adequate for advance folder, it does save a lot of space. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It is worth the time to make these beautiful paper scultures
I would recommend this book to anyone who like to create something unexpectedly lovely.I give these as gifts. At first this looks impossibly difficult, but with a little patience and persistance they willlook just like the models in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for summer school art teachers!!!
While living in Japan I "accidentally" picked up Mr. Chatani's book.I was instantly amazed at thecleverness of the projects. There were famous castles, buildings, bridges and monuments. With less than $50 worth of paper, knives, and glues I began my first efforts at imitating Mr. Chatani's wonderful work. My first few projects (Nagoya Castle and the Duomo in Milano)were not very impressive, but after a week of serious effort, I began making cards that were really impressing friends and family. Then, after gaining more confidence, I began to improvise a bit, using oddly textured and colored papers, and even delicately painting the cards.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Origami book
I was really disapointed over this book. The drawings was to unclear and difficult to understand. And I am very sorry that I am not able to use this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible...even for an experienced folder
I have been doing origami for about 10 years, and have had great success with modular origami (mostly from "Unit Origami" by Tomoko Fuse). This book has diagrams that are hard to understand, the colored side of the paper is not even marked so it's very difficult to know if you are folding correctly. There are no written instructions, only the bad diagrams and I could not make a single model from this book.Even the few photos of the completed models were in black and white and not very good photos at all.I would recommend Fuse's book or another modular origami book with better diagrams. For those that have had success with models from this book, congratulations, but even with my usual vast amount of patience it did not take long for me to throw this book across the room in frustration. However, I will say that the models are very unique and beatiful and if you can do them, they should be very satisfying. I am copying this same review for "3-d Geometric Origami" by Gurkewitz and Arnstein, for I felt the same was true of that book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Knifty models confusingly presented
That rating is really 3 1/2 stars, because the book is better than just average. It may look slim, but it's chock-full of several models in each of many families of modules. Not hours, but weeks of fun (not to mention a lot of paper squares).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Collection of French Beaded Flowers!
Though I haven't had much time since I purchased this book, to go through each of the projects, I must say, the Vintage-style Beauty of many of the Flowers is Wonderful! The designs have a classic style that exudes an ELEGANCE, which is often lost in the french beaded flowers that I see more commonly. There's a lot of competition out there with other french beaded flower books, and I think this one wholeheartedly makes a unique place for itself amongst the bookshelf where my collection of more than 30 french beading books rest. I don't think you'll be disappointed, and surely you will be INSPIRED...I know I was!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book took me to the next level
This book far surpasses any other book I've found in explaining the little details that transform your flowers from the ordinary into the elegant and extraordinary. While it doesn't provide instruction for as many flowers as do the Dalene Kelly books, the ones it does provide are gorgeous, romantic beauties. And you learn professional techniques along the way: how to make a precise pointed petal tip. How to lace-as-you-go. How to create more natural-looking leaves than just the normal cigar-shaped ones. I highly recommend this book, especially for intermediate beaders.

3-0 out of 5 stars A nice book for children
This book shows you how to make flat pieces (flowers, fans rockets, Santa Claus, etc.) of origami that can then be affixed to a card.It does not show you how to make the actual card using origami. While it may entertain your children, I feel it has limited appeal for adults. For those looking to make beautiful cards using origami they should check out "Creative Cards" by Yoshiko Kitagawa.Creative Cards is not limited to origami folds, but it is a wonderful book with many lovely cards.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
