Ditto, to my co-reviewer: Does Fuse get royalites?
I am a box connoisseur, especially an Origami box connoisseur, and I have yet to find a master craftsman with the genius of Fuse.I am always looking for something new to push the envelope, however, so I purchased this book to add to my growing collection.Although I was impressed by the luxurious paper selections made by the author of the book (one assumes) with which to present the box patterns, I found nothing original with respect to design.Furthermore, the photo illustrations, while they display the finished artwork nicely, are somewhat less satisfactory when it comes to demonstrating the sometimes intricate and confusing folds involved.Although the diagramatic line drawings of other origami books seem less colorful and eye pleasing, they are none the less much easier to follow, especially for the beginner. Even though I have done origami for several decades, I would almost certainly have had to refer to Fuse's line drawings to clarify Dirk's photo demonstrations.One thing that the later does have over the former, though, is that the method of folding the stand-up tabs for the lids of some of the boxes is clearer in the photos than in the diagrams.Although less satisfied with it than with my Fuse's, I don't regret having purchased the book, as it is visually satisfying, provides one with ideas for using the boxes, and certainly enlarges ones sense of the artistic use of various types of paper.From my amateurish attempts to work in stained glass, I know that in the practice of any art genius comes in many forms.Fuse's is that of original design.Dirk's is in her precise technique--her finished work (if it is hers) seems absolutely flawless--and in her decisions regarding color, pattern, and line.

Does Tomoko Fuse get royalties?
Like another reviewer, I have noticed that almost all of the designs seem to be exact copies of Tomoko Fuse's work. Perhaps the book explains the models better, but Fuse undoubtably originated them. Perhaps she can't copyright a model? Introduction to Joy and Art of Origami Boxes
When I returned from my Japan vacation in Nov. of '98, I sought out origami books at some of the local bookstores and happened upon this book.The pictures are well done, and the instructions are very clear and easy tofollow.A great introduction to the art and joy of making Origami boxes. I was hooked immediately.That holiday season's theme was Origami boxes. The boxes are brought out every xmas at Mom and Dad's and are placed underthe tree before the store bought gifts arrive and after they depart.Theboxes are wonderful conversation pieces.I share "Ben Eckley fromFreemont, WA. USA" view on the Dirk's borrowing from Tomoko Fuse. Great Teaching Tool
I love this book!I am in Jewish education, but these are stories that both traditions share.Younger kids watch fascinated as the story unfolds and the paper folds.Older kids can fold along with the storyteller.I will often give the directions to the older kids so they can tell the story again with the folding and teach others.Somehow the folding really adds a dimension to the children's listening and thinking about the story--it's not just a gimmick.But it is also a great gimmick!One can customize the foldings to other stories not given in this book, but I wish the author would come out with another book of folding stories.I am buying this book even as I write this review, because I don't like to depend on my kids' day school library for it--I must have it for my own.I'm also buying the holiday book, though I suspect it's for Christian holidays, but I might be able to customize the stories, and I learn a lot just from the techniques the author describes. ... fun and easy
So many origami books claim to be easy.This book really IS fun and easy.I teach art to grades one through five so I need the directions to be simple and few, clear and uncomplicated. This book is just that. I even taught my seven year old daughter to do most of them.Now she loves origami.If you are just starting out or are directionally challenged like I am, then this is the book for you. ... Read more

Folding paper, in 8 colors with gold foil piece.40 sheets.
You can make your own folding paper.Simply fold any sheet of paper diagonally, making a triangle.Do not crease the fold line.If the sides match where the paper meets, you have a square.If not, cut off excesspaper, so that you have a perfect square.When I was a kid, I would evenuse newspaper and paper bags to make my own folding paper. 4 to 6 inchsquares are the usual size used in classes.These sheets are bigger.40sheets, 8 colors (on one side, reverse side white) and a gold sheet.Ihaven't used it yet, but at least you can now figure out what you arebuying.

Delightful
This is a delightful little book.The only negative I have to offer is that it comes--in a growing tradition--grossly over packaged.Although described as "hardbound," in fact it is a soft bound book of 64 pages inserted into a hardbound cover which includes a huge plastic pack that would easily accomodate about 200 sheets origami paper.There are only 25 sheets, however.While I admit that this would allow the enthusiast to store additional sheets safely, I feel that the intent was more to impress the purchaser.That always irritates me, irrational as that may seem.
PLEASE WRITE MORE BOOKS LIKE THIS!
This author seems to have a talent for selecting the most appealing designs and pairing them with the clearest to follow instructions. Every model in this book offers a bonus of being both functional and fun.
Gem of a book
Gay Merrill Gross has done it again. This gem of a book has delightful projects that are so clearly diagrammed and explained that success is all but guaranteed.

Not the best
The instructions are fairly clear and easy to follow, but I was disappointed with the end products.They just weren't very interesting or attractive.I was also disappointed to find that many of the models required glue and/or string to attach the units together.I would recommend "Origami Ornaments : The Ultimate Kusudama Book" over this book any day.

Good introduction to decorative unit origami
Makoto Yamaguchi has provided a good, solid book for introducing the novice folder to the glories of unit origami, while still providing a challenge to the more experienced folder.Clear instructions are always a challenge in origami, but I have used this book from the day I bought it without frustration or boredom.Do not be deceived by the drawings and photographs: the finished products are strong and beautiful! NOT FUN For Children
This book comes with pre-printed pages that you actually make the Pokemon characters with. The paper is SO flimsy that my 9 year old son was unable to even tear out a piece without it ripping to shreds. Because of the poor paper quality these characters are impossible to make. I am referring to a 9 year old child who is an artist & especially gifted with his hands and quite accomplished at Origami. I would give this 0 stars if that was an option and would return it if I had purchased it from an actual store. No Fun! ... Read more

The pictures alone will Excite you!
I really enjoyed this book. The author really goes into details to make your candle making experience as unique and hassle-free as possible. As this books teaches you the basics of container, molded, and taper candles, it builds on more creative projects from there. The book instantly gets the reader excited about making candles for profit or pleasure just by looking at the pictures. Unfortunately, the only reason i did not give it the 5th star is because there were many pictures from other galleries, etc and i wish i had the instructions on making some of those candles.

Good basic information
The author provides great information on the history of candles and gives good basic info for folks just starting out. However, I was a little disappointed to find many of the illustrations with no explanation. The candles in those photos were simply credited to the source from which the came. There were a couple of these I would have liked more information about regarding the techniques used. Some of the instructions could have been more clearly demonstrated with photos. If you're a visual person when it comes to directions you may be disappointed.

Excellent introduction to candlemaking
I bought this book so that I could become informed about candle-making before purchasing all of the materials and supplies to actually make candles.I was very pleasantly surprised!Norma Coney covers basically everything and it's very easy to understand.We've been making candles for a few weeks now and I still constantly refer back to this book for information about wax temperatures, tools, etc.If you're interested in making candles, I would definitely purchase "The Complete Candlemaker."As you get more involved in candle making, it won't cover everything that you want to know, but it is most EXCELLENT for a beginner. ... A Very Impresive Work!
I have enjoyed the art of folding for many years and I have to admit that this is without a doubt the best instructional book I own. It has incredible detail and the finished models are strickingly realistic! I have had to reccomend this one to my friends and I am looking forward to seeing more from this talented artist in the future...well done indeed!

Great family fun!
We borrowed this book from the library, and my 9-year-old son and I have had a blast folding and flying the airplanes.Most of them have taken off with no problems and have proven to be awesome flyers.One or two models have been a bit of a challenge to fold, but we simply started over and tried again!

This book deserves more than 3 Stars.

Reprints always a hazard in origami
Unless you're just starting an origami book collection, you always need to look out for reprints. Don't be fooled - it's a reprint from his other book/s
Rick Beech has only published one book, but it has come out in numerous formats. "Action Origami" is an extract of the larger version of his book published as "Origami Handbook" and "Origami: The Complete Guide to the Art of Paperfolding." Weirdly, all of the different books can sometimes be found in bookshops together, the only difference between the full versions being the covers and the wildly different price tags.Read more

A good facelift.
This appears to be a redacted copy of Florence Sakade's books Origami, Japanese Paper Folding Books One and Two," first published in the 1950s and still a great beginning book.It would appear that new ideas--like the clowns on the back cover--have been added, but it still essentially the same easy to follow guide to simple origami.Most of the designs are for flat models, but there are a number of 3 dimensionals as well, the crane being, of course, the most ancient and traditional of all of them. ... Nice origami book
This book contains a collection of fifteen original origami models by John Montroll.They are really for the intermediate level paperfolder who has mastered the techniques of inside and outside reverse folds along with some squashing and collapsing techniques and who can fold reasonably accurately.
Not the 1st book to get, but shortly thereafter
This nice collection of birds ...a biginner, this is not the best place to get your feet wet. Some of the models I found frustrating. After a bit of practise on some basic models I found on the internet, I returned and found it easier going.This one makes a nice 2nd or 3rd purchase. Good collection of bird models
This is actually a good collection of Montroll's birds.I find folding Montroll's birds a good break from some of the more complicated models and the book's price can't be beat.There are 15 models of birds consisting of a Duck, Swan, Goose, Flamingo, Pelican, Heron, Pheasant, Seagull, Hummingbird, Cardinal, Cormorant, Stork, Eagle, Canary, and Parrot.Although if you are looking for a book to get you started in Origami I would suggest "Teach Yourself Origami" which is a great book to work your way into Origami and Montroll's models. ... Don't waste your money.
This is a 3"x3"x1" box with a tiny book and 14 sheets of 6x6 origami paper. In order to fit the paper in the box, they pre-folded the paper by folding in half, then in half again. Unfortunately the paper still doesn't quite fit, so it is bent to fit into the box. The book shows instructions for 5 basic models (swan, penguin, crane, sailboat, and Japanese helmet). The instructions and drawings are somewhat confusing. Spend your money on real origami paper. ... Read more
