5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
I found the information in this book very helpful in directing a group of adult students this summer in creating sketchbook/journals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Rich and Detailed
This book brings a lot to the table! I was really amazed at how much there is to read, learn and digest from this wealth of information.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this Book!
I thought The Decorated Page was a great book and had checked it out from the library so many times that I decided to buy it. When I saw The Decorated Journal advertised, and read other reviews, I knew it would be good. I wasn't disapointed. It's every bit as good as the first and maybe better. I especially like the book binding portion in the back of the book. My favorite journaling book so far. I would highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Acrylics: The Watercolor Alternative
Being a former teacher of art I have 4 favorite books and this has become one of them.I found Acrylics: The Watercolor Alternative to have the best demonstrations that illustrate technique.I use acrylics in my work and Harrington'sversatile use of acrylics makes for a wide range of possibilities. He is an architect which is reflected in the dicipline of his work.I love the sketches and preliminary designs he prepares. This is very important for artists.I would highly recommend this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I love this book. If you love the vibrancy of watercolors but not their 'fragility' this book offers a great alternative.I am an intermediate to advanced artist and find that this book is exactly what I was looking for.I especially like the section on riverbed rocks under water. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow and cover a nice range of subjects (landscapes, water, trees, buildings, flowers, etc.) There are plenty of step by step demos to get a feel for the technique. There is also a nice, but not overly long section on materials. His painting style is somewhat realistic, but not too much. After buying lots of books I have FINALLY found just what I was looking for. I took a chance on this one, since there weren't many reviews and I couldn't look inside the book, and I am very happy with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So cool!
I like this book. The techniques are awesome. This is a good book for a beginner, or one who wants to explore other ideas that they may not have thought of.What I like is that it is focused on acrylic only. There are not many books on just acrylic. Many painting books seem to cover oil techniques and claim that the techniques can be applied to other mediums. But, you can only go so far, becuase oil and acrylic have two different characterisics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific resource
This book gives a wealth of information on different techniques, materials, and styles. The step-by-step lessons do a great job of showing how the work evolves, and how that evolution varies according to the style chosen by the artist.Just as important, at least to me, is that there are so many color photographs of so many really good paintings.Often, books like this have mostly mediocre work. This is a book am I sure to revisit a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good display of acrylic painting styles
If you have ever read any articles from The Artists Magazine then you will be familiar with the style of demonstrations of acrylic painting that this book offers. It is quite good at showing a diversity of painting styles -fromairbrush photo-realistic to very thick impasto andimpressionistic.Read more

This is a well written and very specific guide to painting houses on rocks. It is beautifully illustrated and offers very specific, understandable and do-able instructions. It is not possible to read this book without feeling encouraged and motivated to get going.

I love the book. It is filled with ideas that will keep me busy for a long time. We enjoy our yard and garden so making these little houses, cottages, and towns will be fun to add to our stepables garden. So thanks Lin for being so creative and for sharing your ideas with others like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book gives a really good intro into acrylics for beginners.I've dabbled in acrylics, but the info in this book gave me the why as well as the how to different techniques. It's absolutely a beginner's book, but very thorough on the basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I found this book just as I was beginning to paint. It helped me confirm that it was acrylics, rather than some other medium, that I wanted to use; and it gave me great instruction to get me going.I have subsequently read other painting-technique books (some excellent, others not) and I still think that, as a general discussion of acrylics, this book is perhaps the best I've seen.It has beautiful paintings as examples of what can be accomplished in acrylics.

2-0 out of 5 stars nice pictures but...
I was expecting a little bit more detailed instruction. This book leaves a beginner(at least this one)a little bit at sea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Any Acrylic Painter's Bookshelf
If you've never done acrylic painting but would like to try pick up this book. The author does a good job of pointing out some advantages of acrylic over oil while making the important point that neither should be seen as superior to the other. Oil has certain advantages for certain techniques and acrylic has others. They should be treated as two separate mediums, not one as superior or inferior to the other. 5-0 out of 5 stars JUST ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL
I own approximately 40 painting books, and I'll have to say this is one of the best. The illustrated paintings are just beautiful.Penney seems to emphasize beach scenes, gardens, and flowers. There are demonstrations that actually give you the exact steps and process. With her "Still, Reflective Water" beach scene there are 13 illustratons, as she progresses to the finished painting.I paid full price through North Light, and I am very pleased with this book. ... Editorial Review

Creativity is one of the great mysteries of life. Everyone may possess it to some degree, but why do some people seem completely in touch with their creative powers while others struggle to connect with it at all? How do you unlock your creative potential--or maximize it, if you're already utilizing some level of it? This inspirational book--meant primarily for painters but full of sage advice for other types of artists and crafters, too--teaches how to release your muse by exploring the basics of the language of art and by applying the Zen principles of blending body, mind, and spirit and of following an intuitive rather than purely logical approach. The author's own lyrical, vividly colored paintings (as well as works by other artists) complement her highly readable discussions of self-awareness, instinct, mandalas, harmony, and mindfulness, as both important general concepts and as they pertain to landscape, still life, and figural art. In short, she teaches you how to know yourself as a creator, and to recognize that "creative vision really is your natural birthright" and that "art has something to offer everyone ... as a means of self-knowledge." 4-0 out of 5 stars A great way to Watercolor painting Ideas
A must to read to start your own ideas on Watercolor painting, using the Zen method.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong art - weaker philosophy
I like Carbonetti's art and this book is full of it. For that reason it is worth buying. She also succeeds in showing the mental aspects of creative art. However, her seeing of Zen is not so successful. She also wrote books like "The Tao of Watercolor" and "The Yoga of Drawing". I would prefer if she simply explained her own position without packaging it into so many commercialy attractive titles.

Editorial Review

Perhaps the definitive book on glass painting, this comprehensive volume explains everything beginners need to know in order to find great success with the craft. But it also overflows with great ways for more experienced glass painters to broaden their repertoire. Extensive step-by-step directions and hundreds of clear color photos cover all the basics (outlining and its many variations; pattern transfer; painting with many types of paints and applicators) as well as numerous alternate effects (including layering, marbling, embedding, metal leafing, and stenciling). Related methods are also shown (etching; glass cutting; using different kinds of glues). The 25 projects range from patterns painted on existing glass forms (glass-fronted key cupboard, small table, vases, bottles, serving platter, lamp) to more elaborate shapes cut and glued together after painting (art deco clock, gilded box, suncatchers); some are suitable for the novice, while others are more advanced. In addition to complete pattern templates for every project--and sometimes even alternate designs too--the authors provide a few hundred other motifs so readers can take off on their own. An excellent overview of materials and a list of suppliers round out this wonderful package. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Glass Painting - Allan and Barry, thanks for sharing your 20 years of experience!
Since I am a beginner to glass painting and have one book on the subject I was looking for something more comprehensive that covered other techniques. After reading the review and previewing from amazon's "look inside", I had to buy the book."The Complete Guide to Glass Painting, is just what it says, it is a good start for beginners and and provides lots of projects, techniques and motifts for the more advanced glass painter. There are so many techniques I never though of that was not covered in my one glass book. When the book first arrived in the mail, I glanced through it quickly; now I am reading the book word for word so as not to miss a great tip. Each page is well designed and layed out for easy reading and understanding with visual direction. You can't go wrong. For those who have more knowedge, this book has 400 motifs to use or combine to create fantastic glass paintings and projects that spark ideas. If you must have a glass painting book, this will be the only one you will need.Allan and Barry, thanks for sharing your 20 years of experience, this is a great book.If the authors ever collaborated to produce anther book; I will be looking out for more of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginner to intermediate
If you just are getting one book about glass painting to try the hobby out then this is a good choice. It has a good overview of the materials available, step by step instructions for different techniques and templates to trace over (glass is perfect for tracing ;-) so you can get started on some small projects. The color pictures are plentiful and pretty, and the price is not too high as one might expect with color pics.Even if you are just into crafts and later find that glass painting isn't your thing the templates and pics can carry over into other crafts.

3-0 out of 5 stars More About How to Paint A Model
This is an excellent book but the title is a bit deceptive. It spends a little bit of time at the beginning describing airbrushes but does not go into much depth. There is not much on how to select a great tool. Instead it details techniques for painting models. In this, it does a very good job.
5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for beginers
This book is perfect for anybody who has just purchased an airbrush or has just a little exerience. This book is slanted to modelers (cars, planes, and fiqures) and as such I would not recomend this book if you are not intending to use your airbrush for that purpose. But the book does take you thru a step by step procedures for which airbrush is right for which project, and list some other equipment to use. It even gives a quick description for how to build a cheap spraybooth. The author of the book is mostly known for his work in model cars so many of the techniques that the are slanted toward that purpose but he does delve into someother types of models. The thing that I most appreciated about this book is the ALL of the pictures are in color.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful tool.
If you are just begining to use an airbrush this book is a must have. I bought the book before my airbrush gun and the book helped get me the proper equipment and techniques to use it properly. I have since turned off the T.V. and created beutiful memories. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More Mural than Trompe L'Oeil
This book covers material, preparation, planning and perspective in a very basic, quick introduction. The photographs are very nicely done and some of the projects include photographs of the steps. The reason I only gave the book a 3 star is because some of the projects seem more like murals than trompe l'oeil (French for "fool the eye"; a two-dimensional painting designed to look like a three-dimensional object).
3-0 out of 5 stars For the Beginner
This is a good book for a do it yourself-er, or homeowner who wants to learn to paint for a child's room, for example. I wouldn't recommend it for a person who wants to do this for a living. A better choice for someone just beginning, but is serious about learning would be one of Chris Westall's books on trompe l'oeil.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was looking for
This book has beautiful photographs of Trompe L'Oeil and it does offer a few explanations on projects but it's more photos then anything else. It gives a good stone wall and sky project explanation and a few small projects but it doesn't give any information on a lot of the photos. If you are a beginner I wouldn't recommend this one. Very few templates offered for the amount of projects they illustrate. I hoped for more with this book but it's just not there. I think I could of found a better book for the money. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars uninspiring
The book lacks both technical details and inspirations. Contains several basic boreing projects so meticulously drawn line after line as for to be copied. The "trompe l'oeil" title is too ambitious either. Sorry to admit but very like other books offered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good IF you're a beginner...
This is just a so-so book. It is most helpful for novice painters or total beginners. The projects in the book are relatively basic and they have been "done before" (many, many, many times). Professional and serious decorative painters will find the projects in this book elementary.5-0 out of 5 stars A really great book to own after all
I have been using this book for a while now, and i would like to increase my previous review rating from 3 to 5 stars. I have had a chance to compare this book with other literature and i now realise what a great resource book it is. The instructions are easy to follow and i was able to apply the simple techniques it contains to the more elaborate trompe l'oeils that i wished to attempt - where other materials had led me to beleive that this would be beyond my ability. I have also come to appreciate the short and simple list ofmaterial needed for each project making this book a true source of inspiration. ... Read more
