3-0 out of 5 stars 3 and a half stars, pleasant reading, expectations too high
He starts off his book asking the reader to read the book cover to cover. This is not typical for a do it yourself project book. We needed some help on technical questions for a windowsill and backsplash and between reading the book when we can and trying the John Bridge Forum online and asking the specific question (we were unable to find another thread with our answers) we still have no answers. We have been trying to get answers for about 3 weeks now. However, for someone trying to learn masonry this is a good book to add to your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Information
Got this book a few weeks ago as I prepare to redo two bathrooms.Although the pictures aren't the best, the descriptions, and funny writing style make this book a wealth of knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A WINNER
I bought three books on Polymer Clay, and this is the only one with all the techniques there that I want to learn.
5-0 out of 5 stars Polymer Clay Bible
Everyone starting out in polymer clay should have this book in their library. Many newer techniques have been developed since this book came out but this book contains everything you need in order to develop your own original work. If you're looking for a "projects" book skip this, but if you want the basicsthis is the book for you. I only wish Nan Roche would write another! I still find myself refering to it and I've been working in polymer clay for over 15 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book that started it all for Polymer Clay
It was the first book about PC. It was the only book available for quite some time. Many of the most renowned PC artists started with this book and you can see the influence in their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference for both beginners and advanced potters
Making Marks is an excellent reference book that both beginners and advanced potters can benefit from.It delves into all aspects of potting, and not only illustrates the results that can be achieved, it provides the "how to" for many of the processes.Any potter who has this book in their library will never run out of ideas for creating unique pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Books like this one -a definite necessity !
This is an exciting book, it is not just about painting marks on surfaces. The list of options is quite comprehensive from liquid slips, clay colour modifications, carving, underglazes,slip-trailing, lustre-ware and of course impressions and incisions made by tools.Robin Hopper is a master of clay due to the years he has be absorbed by it.He has used good quality work by various potters to display the different forms of decoration.
5-0 out of 5 stars For the dabbler or those needing inspiration to try something new
While I'm relatively new to the art and craft of pottery, I beginning to find my own voice in my work. This book is helping me to think about differnet ways to express myself in my work. While I will probably never go out and buy a sand blaster or work with lusters, I know I have the inital reference source I need should I decide to go that way.

It is a good reference book for the ceramic artist andcollector. It provides wonderful pictures, inspiration, and ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars A formidable tour of the art of ceramic cup-making
Anyone who thinks there is very little difference between one cup and another would have that notion blown away by simply flipping open any page of this book. When the teacher of a local community college pottery course saw this book, she asked everyone in her classes to refer to it before beginning to design their next cup projects. It opened their minds to some of the infinite possibilities available to practitioners of the potter's craft.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catalogue of a 1995-96 exhibition with 7 papers and pictures of the artifacts
This quite beautiful book is the product of an exhibition by the Art Museum of Princeton University that ran from December 1995 through February 1996.It was called "The Olmec World: Ritual and Rulership".The first half of the book contains seven very interesting papers that made varying degrees of sense to me.Not because the papers were poor, but simply because I am not an authority in the field.Trying to weigh and interpret the scant threads of evidence (but the evidence is actually amazing) is tough for professionals. For amateurs like me, it is quite impossible to do much more than pay your money and take your chances. We follow along as best we can and watch developing trends in the scholarship.
1-0 out of 5 stars Reconstructing a culture entirely from religious art
Mesoamerican archaeology is a little world by itself - I know, because I used to live in it. It has a very cosy relationship with museums and the "art" collectors who buy the objects that are looted from archaeological sites, which lie destroyed, torn into shreds under the forests all over Central America and Mexico. But it has almost no touch with reality any more. The things they say about the ancient Olmec are almost fantasy, because in truth we know so little about these people. Almost all the objects in this book were stolen from Mexico, ripped from the archaeological context that might tell us something about their real meaning. These are probably religious articles - we may never know. But imagine trying to reconstruct the rich life of rennaisance Italy by looking at reliquaries in Catholic churches! If you are still persuaded by the "mysterious Olmec" propaganda spouted by Coe and his looter buddies, go read Flannery & Marcusin the first 2000 issue of the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, and think it over.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any Olmec Enthusiast
The Olmec World is an amazing resource for those who study or have an appreciation of early Mesoamerican Art.At its most basic level The Olmec World is the catalogue of the 1996 Olmec Exhibition at the Art Museum at Princeton University the first comprehensive show of Olmec art in America.Drawing upon nearly all of the major Olmec museum collections in North America from Dunbarton Oaks to Princeton's own expansive holdings, the exhibition also drew heavily from many private collections never before shown to the general public. For instance, John Stokes' amazing collection of ceramic babies and jade masks are showcased in this catalogue. However, almost as impressive as the pictures are the essays in this collection.Michael Coe has done a marvelous job of soliticing and editing a myriad of papers on the mysterious Olmec. ... Although I didn't pay cover price through [...] this book by Paul Andrew Wandless is well worth every penny. The information in this book is priceless. If you've ever wondered how to print on clay, this is the book to buy. This will be my go-to book of choice when I need a step-by-step tutorial on how to print on clay. The description written by Amazon.com says it all: "Comprehensive how-to book." There are photo tutorials for all projects and a wealth of images from artists around the world (most of which are current works).

This book, by Katherine Dewey, is a terrific resource book for those wishing to make animals from polymer clay - either to enhance their other sculptures or as a stand alone product.Numerous pictures and examples, with detailed instruction guide you step by step through the process.Animals included are deer, in two poses, frog, wolf, seal, bear and more. She also includes examples of bases, such as a leave for a sleeping mouse.

I found Katherine Dewey to be an excellent instructor, her directions were clear, detailed and easy to follow. I appreciated the directions for making your own tools as these can be expensive and hard to find. The tips and directions continue to be helpful in projects other than those given in the book. I highly recommend this book as well as her other book, Creating Life-Like Figures in Polymer Clay to anyone interested in working with this medium.

Editorial Review

For more than 30 years, Dale Chihuly's work, principally in glass (but occasionally including such unconventional media as neon and ice), has challenged traditional distinctions between craft and art. Chihuly's oeuvre is notable for its vibrancy of color, the boldness of its shape and execution, and, in recent years, its studied mimicry of natural forms, from cacti to seaweed and jellyfish. The scale of these blown-glass works ranges from pieces suitable for a coffee table to vast hanging chandeliers that drape from ceiling to floor or shoot up like Christmas trees from below. At times, Chihuly's work is merely decorative, a collection of brightly colored, softened glass forms that resemble melted Christmas tree ornaments, sea anemones, squash, wriggling eels, and other organic shapes. The dizzying abundance of work created by Chihuly himself and his students-cum-assistants at his Pilchuk Glass School, and the enormously successful marketing of this art (Pilchuk, located near Seattle, is open to visitors), has lead some viewers to an overfamiliarity with the work. But art critics Donald Kuspit and Jack Cowart argue for its originality and importance in their introductory essays. (Perhaps overly so: Cowart compares the pieces to Matisse, Turner, and Walt Disney's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Chihuly Art
This book is beautiful!I visited the botanical gardens in St. Louis and saw some of Dale Chihuly's work close up. I've never seen anything like it. What an incredible art form this is. This book brings back the same feelings I had while looking at his work in person. The pictures in this book are breathtaking. The great thing about this particular book is that it has pictures of his work located all over the world. Many of the pictures have a location listed and some of them have Mr. Chihuly's comments on the piece and how he felt about creating it. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a general book on his work. I have it on my coffee table in the family room and everyone who opens it up, can't put it down. Every turn of the page brings a "WOW" or "Incredible". Truly a `must have' book for your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotizing and beautiful
I was introduced to Chihuly through a special on my local PBS station many years ago.I couldn't remember his name, but I always remembered that he was the brilliant man with the unorthodox style. His vision and his artistic talents are immense. This book is absolutely mesmerizing and gorgeous with page after page of color photos. From the "Chihuly Over Venice" project to his designs for the set of the opera "Pellas et Mlisande" for the Seattle Opera. This book truly is a feast for the eyes and the soul.Chihuly is a master of glass and this book proves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a worthwhile book
Among the thousands of art books on the market, Kuspit's exhaustive look at Dale Chihuly's career in glass is a bargain for the Amazon price. Filledwith gorgeous color photos of Chihuly's unique work, and intelligentlywritten, this book will grace any art lover's shelf. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's hard to imagine a material more versatile than polymer clay. What other medium yields perfectly convincing simulations of everything from marble, wood, ivory, and jade to metal, porcelain, mosaic, enamel, and semiprecious stones--not to mention flowers, food, and sculptural forms? With a thoroughness rarely found in other books on the subject, Sue Heaser explains all of these methods and more, supplementing her excellent instructions with good, clear photos. Although she includes a number of full step-by-step projects, this is primarily a techniques-driven presentation. Beginning with the preliminaries of materials, preparation, color mixing, baking, and other basics, Heaser then moves on to clay manipulation (beads, millefiori, molds, vessels, frames, flowers), sculpting (simple animals, faces, armatured figures), embellished treatments (stamping, painting, metallic effects, image transfers), and simulations (stones, antique effects, wood, miniatures). Chapter-opening spreads showcase exquisite works by a variety of polymer clay artists, and a helpful appendix compares the handling properties of all the leading polymer clay brands. Beginners will most likely be more comfortable with a more project-oriented approach, but anyone already bitten by the polymer clay bug will find this an essential idea book. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Polymer Clay Techniques
This book is great for me as a beginner. It has the projects I was looking for and step by step instructions were more concise for me to follow without missing a pertinent step i might have a question about as in other books and magazines I have looked at.Sue Hauser has also given valuable information on the other materials to be used with the clay and several techniques using these in detail. She also lists the different properties on different brands of polymer clay which really enlightened me on why I might be having a problem with certain clays and my use of them.It definitely broadened my imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner (and beyond) book
I got my start with Polymer Clay using the excellent Kato book, "The Art of Polymer Clay" and was instantly hooked. Always interested in seeing new ideas and techniques, I was happy to see this new book. It has a few more ideas and a different outlook. What I like the most is the step-by-step approach given in this book. The Kato book did step-by-step as well, but this one is laid out very nicely with more pictures of "how-to".

This book serves as a very good starting guide for beginners. It is so comprehensive that almost all the techniques for surface decoration are covered. It should be unparalleled if further enriched on the glaze part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guide we've seen so far
My husband and I have been doing pottery for many years and we're always picking up books to get new ideas. This one is the best we've seen in a very long time in regard to variety, unique ideas, and information provided. We highly reccommend it for anyone from beginners to experts.

this is probably the best & most informative ceramics book i have bought (and i have bought lots!). It gives great detail on every decoration method and even includes some great yet simple glaze recipies! Definitly the book i am most happy with of all the books on ceramics i have. Sure, some of the work used for examples would not be to my taste but the method is there and can be applied to anything you design yourself. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Kiln Book
This book is beautifully written and very informative. It gives detailed instructions about building several different kilns. It is a good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE one and only GOOD book about kilns
This is a fantastic book, even if you are NOT going to build a kiln. This book is packed with cool stuff and good pictures. When I built my kiln (a 4.5 foot gas raku) this was the only book I used. All the other kiln books I have ever seen (a lot I sadly assure you) are complete garbage. This one on the other hand is a gem. Well worth every cent of the cost and very well written, this book is in my top 3 for ceramics books. It is an great book for begginers and ultra experienced potters alike. My one and only problem is that they barely even mention doors. Doors are not terribly important, compared to the other info, but this is a MAJOR fault with this book. I don't know if it will be revised, but that is one thing that is very bad.5-0 out of 5 stars great book
If you are thinking about building, firing or repairing a kiln, this is the book. With a fair amount of firing experience, but little knowledge of building, this book gave me the info and guidance to help build my own woodkiln.Get this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bowl (n) 1. A hemispherical vessel...
I have a hunger for bowls. Objects that can hold other objects, particularly food, fascinate me.This book feeds my hunger with beautiful color photos of more bowls than my brain can hold in one sitting.Bowls that make me laugh, purr, gasp with amazement, and covet.Oh how I covet.Bowls that hold other bowls that hold other bowls...
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, but here's another recommendation
This bookfollows the current trend in ceramics which says if it isn't "far out " , misshapen, weird, and/or ugly it isn't "in". A lot of these pieces are not even recognizable as bowls. If you want a really great book of bowls that look like bowls and yet are not ordiinary, get 500 Wooden Bowls. Many of the designs will translate very well to clay

5-0 out of 5 stars pottery
This book is very helpful to the beginner. The photos are very clear and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Beginner's Book I've Seen
This is an outstanding guide for learning how to throw pots. What sets this book apart from other beginning guides are the photos demonstrating the techniques and the cutaways showing both what the form should look like when properly executed and what the common mistakes look like and why.Other highlights include the clarity of the text, the inclusion of multiple methods to achieve a particular goal (e.g. opening, lifting the wall, etc.), and step-by-step instructions for several projects. While I made reasonable progress in a beginning class, the illustrations in this book really clarified the concepts and resulted in immediate improvements in my technique.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Teaching Tool
"Throwing Pottery Techniques" by Mary Chappelhow is perfect for the beginning potter. The information is not so lofty that the beginner is unable to keep up.Several projects are provided with clear instructions and lots of pictures. The information is easy to follow and very thorough. You will be pleased with this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kowalsky Book Surpasses Godden's Standard Reference
For years, serious collectors of pottery and porcelain relied on the works of Geoffrey Godden to assist them in their search for manufacturer's marks. Other authors produced different books, but Godden always remained the standard. Those days are over as Arnold A. and Dorothy E. Kowalsky have now produced what will undoubtedly become the definitive ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MARKS. Emphasizing the products of American, English and European earthenware, ironstone and stoneware from 1780-1980, the Kowalsky's present - as their book jacket states - "Makers, Marks, and Patterns in Blue and White, Historic Blue, Flow Blue, Mulberry, Romantic Transferware, Tea Leaf and White Ironstone."Containing 688 pages and hundreds of manufacturer's marks, this masterpiece highlights - and cross references to Geoffrey Godden - American Potteries and Marks, English Potters and Patterns, and European Potters and Patterns. Also included are notes from selected authorities spotlighting transfer printing on blue and white ceramics, historical Staffordshire, Flow Blue, Mulberry Ironstone, White Ironstone and Copper Lustre Decorative Motifs on White Ironstone China. The authors have diligently provided a guide for readers to know how to use their book. Some books are written for information; some for pleasure. This wonderful addition to the world of antiques and collectibles provides both information and pleasure. You really can't get any better than this!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best S&P book around
This book is what I would term user friendly. It isset up in such a waythat you can easily access the information you need.In the back of thebook is a listing of many importing companies and information on them. This is my favorite of all of the shaker books.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book available on the subject.
If you are going to own just one book on salt & peppers, this is the one in which to invest. It is quite comprehensive and very well organized.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will add spice to your collection!!
Mike Schneider keeps raising the bar a little higher--so high that Sergei Bubka couldn't vault over it.When I got the book I showed it to friends and that was the acid test.Over and over I heard, 'My grandma had thatpair,' or ' We have those in the basement...they're worth that much?!?' These people were enthralled with the book. Mike Schneider's book runs fromroutine shakers to really obscure ones to ones that are absolutelyunbelievable. The prices are true and the colors are crisp. Mr.Schneider's previous work caused me to be sure I got this volume--and asalways I am very pleased with his efforts.Schiffer Publishing has arising star. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners
I found this book very helpful. The instructions are detailed enough to get a beginner started in stained glass construction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough introduction to tools and techniques
I really like the BINDING on the edition of this book I ordered from amazon.com, it's a spiral-bound book, but neatly bound in a paperback cover -- really slick, obviously a book that intends to be kept open while you're using it!
5-0 out of 5 stars The best starter book you will ever need
I found this book to be very informative, very percise, and very easy to understand. If you've never done stained glass before and you want to learn how without going to a class, this is the book for you. It shows you step by step exactly what you need to do, and how to do it. Along with all the tools you will need to get started, and the price range for all. This is the best starter book you will ever need! Get it, you won't be sorry. ... Read more
