5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent book for the Doré or Dante lover
The quality of this book - along with an amazingly affordable price tag - quickly persuaded me to pick up a copy. Its really everything you could ask for in an art book;
4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful (Really 4 and a half stars)
I have looked at a variety of Dante artists. Some well known and some are not. Suloni Robertson, John Flaxman, Willam Blake, Sandro Botticelli, Sandow Birk, Herb Roe. Do a google search to look at the works of some of these like Sandow Birk. There are some that are more obscure which in a way documents the Comedy, more specifically the Inferno. I'm not going to say who I don't like but Dore is the best. I am rather specific about artists. Dore makes the grade. He is good, really good and when you look at this book, you feel like you are in the terrible depths of hell. I like purgatorio too. I feel the religious prayer songs in my head as I see Beatrice's entrance. There is so much symbolism in these pictures, especially in Paradiso. Though I do disagree with the depiction of Muhammad in hell, the rest is fantastic. I mean that he looks more like he's British then Middle Eastern. I imagine him with blonde hair in the plate. The tortured look on Dante's face in the plate with Betrand de Born, (The cover pic) is extraordinary. I felt how he felt. That is why Dore is so good. I had also hoped for more detail with Ugolino because his story is fantastically horrifying.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Dore's Illustrations for Dante's Commedia are great.
The Illustrations from the 1st canto in the Inferno to the last of Paradiso are great because they help as a visual aid when reading the Divina Commedia. One can really see how and in which ways Dore, when he design the illustrations, followed the text very closely. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book for stamp carving!
If you are interested in learning how to carve your own art rubber stamps then you need this book as well as The Weekend Crafter:Rubber stamp carving.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Gloria Page!
I have always wanted to make my own art stamps but never knew how or where to begin. Thanks to Art Stamping Workshop, all of my questions have been answered! After reading this fabulous book, I was able to create a stamp from items I had around the house. Gloria's instructions are easy to follow and the photos clearly show how each step is supposed to look as you go along. Gloria Page makes stamp carving easy and FUN! The variety of projects in this book are different from anything I have seen in other stamping books and are easily adaptable to any style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Stamping Workshop
I've been working my way through Art Stamping Workshop with the Artists of the Round Table since January, and it's been an incredible adventure!Like Holy Moly Mackeroly before it, ASW has the feel of a conversation with an old friend, providing just the right amount of encouragement for this novice to pick up a carving tool for the first time and feel successful from the very beginning. The book is gorgeous, but even better, it's doable - I'm learning to carve, I'm learning to use my carvings on different surfaces, and I'm learning to make beautiful things incorporating my carvings.I couldn't be happier with this book or its author! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best!!
This is one of the best rubber stamping technique books I have come across.Unlike many other technique books, Nancy sticks primarily to dimensional and textural effects that can be created with stamps and ink on paper. There are a couple of projects devoted to stamping on other surfaces such as acetate or shrink plastic, but these are in the minority. For those of you who are interested in broadening your techniques for rubber stamp art you use to create cards, you will not be disappointed with this book.Nancy uses materials that are common to any stamper's stash--ink, stamps, watercolor crayons, glue gun, etc.You won't have to go searching for exotic, hard-to-find or expensive materials to complete the projects.I LOVE how the photos provide very clear step-by-step directions for each technique.I don't know if Nancy is the model for the photos, but I sure smiled when I saw how each stamp was heavily ink-stained and obviously well-loved and used!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for Stampers
Nancy Curry has an amazing way of taking the ordinary and turning it into something spectacular. This is a must-have book for any serious stamper. Your friends will marvel at how you made your stamping projects. If you've been longing to design and create outside of the traditional stamping box, this book will provide the guidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Stampers looking for more.
As an instructor, professional designer and artist, I strongly recommend this book. The projects are well thought out, innovative and creative. Nancy Curry has shared her expertise throughout the pages and provided us, the readers, with inspiring samples. I encourage those that do buy the book not to read it through and then let it collect dust- use this valuable resource; play in your crafting area or studio and try the techniques out for yourself. You will take your stamping to another level. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Blatant Alteration of the Dore's OriginalWork
This work is a blatant example of revisionism. The first 2 plates have been "doctored" to remove the human form of God from the creation and garden of Eden accounts. While Dore's work is beautiful, this book is not an accurate representation of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classical Illustrations
These illustrations are beautiful and powerful in their composition. Any of Dore's stuff is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic biblical iconic images
I bought this is for reference material, to see the classic imagery of the bible. The imagery is full of all the drama and suspense and gore that the old testament delivers..Amazing line work, fantasic detail and clever compositons. It's definitely an R rated verison and that's the way I think the Old Testament was meant to be, as a story. Buy it for its classical images that have been repeated again and again andbuy it for its detailed engravings that will impress. It's timeless stuff. ... Read more

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso worked in a remarkable number of media. His drypoint prints look like they were made by a man enraged, or more likely Spanish. These are some of his linocuts, obviously made by the same hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rembrandt Etchings
We first saw this book as a reference source in an art gallery that was selling original Rembrandt etchings. The book provides an explanation of how the etchings were produced and provides photos of all (found) Rembrandt etchings in their original sizes. Since we were not very familiar with Rembrandt's etchings or with the differences in the appearance of originals produced later using the same plates, this book helped provide us with a means to evaluate the ones being sold at the gallery.
5-0 out of 5 stars Artist and innovator.
Rembrandt didn't invent etching, but he very nearly reinvented it. He did more with mixed processes, especially drypoint and etching, than anyone before him. He was also among the first to use etching as a drawing medium, giving it a freedom it had never had before.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb publication
Although budget-priced, this edition is a winner, in my opinion. All of Rembrandt's etchings are reproduced on a heavy-stock paper that is of the proper degree of shine necessary to bring out the full, crisp nuances ofthe etchings. The result are vividly life-like etchings that show alltheir intricate details.Faces and people come alive, almost jumping outof the page. The Dover people were right in thinking that only a shiny,heavy-stock paper could bring out the full details of the etchings, tocreate reproductions that are as closely realistic as the originalimpressions. Also, almost all of the impressions seem of the proper degreeof sharpness and darkness necessary to bring out their details. My onlyproblem is that the book is somewhat heavy and bulky, but this is the priceto pay for the heavy-stock paper needed for excellent reproductions, eachof the same size as the originals. There are also some extra inserts inthe book that reproduce in full size several etchings that are too big tofit life-size within the dimensions of the book. The inclusion of theseinserts is considerate on the part of the authors, showing their dedicationto bringing out the full artistry of the etchings, and ensuring that thecommon budget book-buyer has full access to these etchings in their mostvivid, almost museum-like form. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A necessary companion to the Literary Masterpiece
Dore, known perhaps best for his woodcuts of Dante's "Divine Comedy", was not only a fantastic illustrator, but a prolific one as well, producing scores of woodcuts for great literature, including "The Holy Bible" and "Orlando Furioso".Before there were movies, a person could look at these pictures for motion, excitement, and dramatic storytelling.5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning Display of Woodcut Artistry
It is amazing how such complex woodcuts could be done! Some of these are used in books. An example is the book cover illustration of the book "Raising Hell: A Concise History of the Black Arts and Those Who Dared Practice Them" (ISBN: 0399522387).5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional gathering of his finest work!
This is with out a doubt the best of Gustave's biblically inspired works. His mastery is proven by creating a visually stunning and poetic world of a time long ago but not forgotten. It's hard to remember what I used toimagine when I thought of the Garden of Eden or the descension of thefallen angels must've been like prior to reading this work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The language of image
This is one of those wonderful books. It's written by a contrary, crotchety old man, full of opinions you won't hear anywhere else, and incredibly well-informed. The author was retired from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he had been curator of prints.I listen when he talks on the topic of prints, and I think I hear why he waited until retirement to write this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Informational
Interesting and well written, this book has been not only a wonderful source of entertainment but a good reference for this native art style.Every image is a beautiful example of the style, and covers several medias (print, paint, clothing and carving).Stewart spends time covering all the basics, from the rudimentary design principles, to the myths and symbolism of the many animals and figures represented by the examples.Differences between tribal styles are also covered, each group accompanied by several wonderful examples of the art. This book is a great starting place for anyone wanting to study this art form, whether it be primarily cultural or artistic.

Editorial Review

Shortly after Kathan Brown founded Crown Point Press in 1963, she beganinviting painters and sculptors from around the world to join her in her studioto experiment with the art of printmaking. This book is a loving tribute to 56of these artists, most of whom had no previous printmaking experience. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius Moves Beyond the Predictable
For almost a decade, New York Times art director Steven Heller has contributed a column to PRINT magazine called "Separated at Birth," inwhich he features twin-like pairs of otherwise unrelated designs. In 1993, he and Julie Lasky wrote an entire book on "appropriation" in design, titled Borrowed Design: Use and Abuse of Historical Form (Van NostrandReinhold). This book is in part an extension of that, in the sense that itunearths and juxtaposes examples of graphic design that seem to be indebted to earlier efforts in art and design. It is shown convincingly, for example, that the abstract crosses in the work of the Russian Constructivists were probably inspired by the clerical garb of Russian Orthodox priests in the 15th century; or that the famous pointing hand inJames Montgomery Flagg's "I Want You For the U.S. Army" poster (1917)was anticipated by a ubiquitous advertising display for a drink calledMoxie (1911) and a World War I recruiting poster (1914) in which LordKitchener (in a pose identical to that of Uncle Sam) "points a finger" atunenlisted British males. For good or bad, this book has very little text:Other than a brief paragraph that introduces each icon, its onlycommentary is a well-written opening essay. But it offers an almostunparalleled wealth of more than 500 full-color illustrations of historic examples of graphic design.-Roy Behrens, Ballast

5-0 out of 5 stars Recurring themes and styles
This book illustrates the recurring ideas, themes, styles, and forms that graphic designers have used over the past century. It shows me that nothing is really new, but it takes a talented designer to make the old seem like never before. ... Read more
