journey of an Art Quilter
Love the book.. but need to advise that it is for an advanced quilter.. not for a beginner...personally, I loved it...

Beautiful book
I've gone over the information in this book a few times, and really want to start a project. However, I'm one who needs quiet time to absorb the information, and I just haven't had the time to get "really involved" in a project. The pictures are beautiful, and I'm looking forward to the time I can make an art quilt as beautiful as Barbara's.

Wonderful!
Clear instructions for many fantastic quilts in various sizes!Worth the money!Mrs. Burns is funny too.Quilt books don't have to be boring and this won isn't!It's great!

I bought this book for my Mother-In-Law as a gift.She and I agree it is a wonderful book with easy to follow instructions on how to piece the quilts together.The designs are absolutely beautiful and the book is put together extremely well!If you like to quilt or even look at beautiful designs this is definately the book for you--ENJOY!!!!

Very detailed instructions
This is my third Eleanor Burns book and so far I have only started my first project from this one.I love all the projects and the full color illustrations - unlike some quilting books, hers are very detailed and easy to follow, no matter what level of difficulty.Burns expects you to have very specific supplies, (which I broke down and bought) but I think it was worthwhile to do so.All in all a great quilting book! ... The Quilts of Gee's Bend
This book is a testament to the ingenuity, tenacity, and faith of the women of Gee's Bend who, from their lives of deep poverty and hard scrabble living, still found the inner resources to create functional, yet strikingly original art.
A BEAUTIFUL REMINDER
Not only did I purchase this book, I purchased one for a friend of mine who is a quilter. The quilts and the incredible stories behind them are powerful motivators for those who wish to accomplish anything, not just quilting.It is the triumph of the human spirit and proves that deep down, each of us has an indominable core.I am envious of the skill that these women posessed and of the oral history and cultural traditions which have been created and passed down.It's a reminder of the scope of human potential.

great collection of American Art
I am an Alabama native. I have visited Gee's Bend, Alabama many times, but mainly to EAT!! They have more than pretty quilts in Gee's Bend. I have seen the quilts but because I love quilts and even tried unsuccessully to make one but, not being an expert, I guess I did not appreciate how popular the Gee's Bend quilts would become until I saw the story on CBS's Sunday Morning about the quilts being on display at the Whitney Museum in New York. The current quilters visited the opening at the museum and song those old gospel songs to their many fans.Read more

Can't say enough great things!!
Search no more!I am in the process of taking a quilting class and this is the required reading.I could actually learn to quilt straight from the book, no instructor necessary (and I am a complete novice).It's so simply written and so thorough.

Very useful
I had always wanted to learn quilting but had never had a chance - no courses in my area, etc. Then I ordered this book and it did magic: it removed my fears and made me feel that, though quilting does involve work, that work can be pleasant and fun. The instructions and ilustrations are very clear. Detail: I am Brazilian and learned English as a foreign language; in spite of that, I could understand the instructions very well. That proves how clear they are. The projects are also interesting - well detailed, with perfect measurings so that you will not be disappointed. For me it was indeed the ideal first book. It made my first experiences in quilting very rewarding and frustration-free.

Sally Collins has outdone herself with this book.In our modern day society, there is an emphasis on speed -everyone rushes around trying to squeeze in as many activities and projects into each minute of every day.This sometimes has the unfortunate consequence of less attention to detail and the result is sloppiness.In this book, Sally shows the quilter how to slow down and enjoy the process of creating each quilt block.Read more

Good ideas
I found this book to be quite helpful in organizing my sewing room.I have used two of the ideas already & as soon as I can afford it, plan to buy shelving to put along one wall.Right now I have two storage units which take up too much room.One idea:To organize all fabrics by color and to fold them twice so that they lay flat.That alone saved me tons of space.At first I was reluctant to separate my fat qtr sets but feel that space saved was worth it.Another idea I put to use is to show the yardage on each fabric.I do this for all fabrics except for fat qtrs and 1/8ths.
Very useful!
Although at the moment I do not have a room or a corner that I can devote totally to my quilting space, I found this book to be very inspiring.The chapter on ergonomics, proper lighting, and UV protection for fabrics alone was worth the purchase price!I have learned the correct heights for my cutting, sewing, and ironing activities to avoid back and neck strain.The book also offers the most efficient dimensions for ironing surfaces, cutting boards, and shelf depth.Room dimensions are provided, which I can now compare to the size of my spare room to see if it would be possible to convert it someday.I like the author's suggestions for converting base cabinets or buffets into workable spaces.

Too Awesome!!!

Fantasticbook!
I just ordered another one of these as a gift for a friend. I happen to have some Japanese fabrics and am in the process of makinga quilt based on this book.Mrs. Pippen explains the fabrics, the methods, and does everything she can think of to encourage you to do your own thing.Talking about "thinking out of the box,"the closest this book comes to ordinary is to make the quilts rectangular.Even that could be changed if one so inclined.What fun! Great quilts but poor layout of instructions
The book has terrific quilts and the directions are good too but the directions for the quilt are scattered around in the book.For the directions for any one particular quilt, you are referred to multple different pages for your insturctions.Very irrating. I do plan to make a quilt from this book but I sure don't like the format.

Gorgeous and Easy
The quilts in this book are beautiful and impressive. Easy to make, too. Choosing fabrics that will carry out the subtle shadings is probably the most difficult part of the whole project.

Making pieced curves simple

Very informative but expensive
This is a good book not only for the beginners but also for advanced quilters.It will give you a few original quilting ideas with original designs.I found the chapter or color/light theory very informative and useful.On the negative site I found the book rather expensive which prvents me from giving it five stars.Amazon discount is certainly very helpful...

Pieced Curves really is so simple
I found Dale Flemings book well thought out and visually engaging.The projects demonstrate the inovative techniques well. For the more adventuresome she does a great job of sharing her methods of coming up with original designs. Using her techniques you can piece anything you can think up. She has a great color sense. Great for building upon different techniques
This book is a totally practical guide to surface design. The step by step pictures of the processes are particularly helpful. The finished items where the author has built up a cloth through her repertoire of techniques are inspirational.

Buy this first
If you are just getting into dyeing fabric or already have got your feet blue and orange and green from spills, this book holds lots of tips and tricks and just plain "how to".Dunnewold's book can be read and used as a reference or browsed and used as a stimulus for "what can I do today?"Organized well, straight forward text and good explanations.Get some dye and make your cloth complex...layers and layers and layers of lovely.

Must have for fabric artists

Kalideiscope quilt
This is a really interesting way of making quilts.Just one fabric and each hexagon is completely different.The hard part comes in arranging the pieces properly. This takes quite a bit of rearranging on a design wall.

Newly Obsessed
I bought this book 3 weeks ago and I have been so pleased with it.At first, you might think this is just an extension of Stack 'N Whack, but it isn't. The only similarity is the pinning technique which is essentially the same.The differences are in what Maxine Rosenthal does with the blocks that result and in the types of fabrics she uses. No more hesitation!
After viewing amazing art quilts for years at fairs and exhibits, I wanted an attempt at my own. This book was recommended in more than one place, so I chose it along with three other art quilt books. This, by far, has been the most useful tool in my new hobby of machine quilting. Ms. Noble makes it easy to follow each of the steps to get you quilting. One part of this book that stands out is the small tips & hints peppered throughout her succinct text. Also, I am sure the threads and materials grids have saved me hundreds of dollars in "testing" thread and accessories.

Best Teaching Book by the Author
I now own all three of the author's books and I found this one to be the very best of the three as a "teaching" book.After reading through it, I discovered the "missing pieces" that answered so many of my questions.Each book offers a different focus for making whole cloth quilts or traditional heirloom quilts.While none of the books offers a comprehensive guide, all three add up to a trilogy of quilting knowledge that will help you create your own heirloom or whole cloth quilt:Whitework Quilting for design inspiration (lots of photos), McTavishing for background quilting, and Ornamental Design for trapunto.

Mastering the Art of McTavishing
I am very glad that i have this book in my posession; allows to generate number of new thoughts and ideas for future projects; very well illustrated and easy to follow; this is the book that you return to time to time.

McTavish DVD a hit!
The book is very good, but the DVD is wonderful!I have viewed the DVD numerous times.I enjoyed the delightful commentary by Karen McTavish while watching her stitch, creating the famous "McTavishing".She gives the viewer tips, tricks and the courage to learn her technique.
