5-0 out of 5 stars What a find!
This is a great book, full of different and delightful dolls, babies, women, men and animals. I can't stop looking at it! Get yourself a soft sculpture needle and be glad the dryer eats one of every pair of your socks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sock dolls are not just monkeys!
When I was a kid, I made sock dolls. They were simple and I didn't have to do too much sewing before I could start playing. This book took me back to those happy days and also gave me some new ideas. There are"character" dolls (including a ballerina, a family, and SantaClaus) that children would probably enjoy. There are also lots of cutebaby and child dolls. Many of the socks used for the dolls pictured in thebook are "unusual" socks (patterned or textured) and the dollsare designed to be made of "new" socks (unlike my childhood toysthat I made of the odd socks who had lost their mates). The dolls in thisbook are quick and relatively easy to make - a good way to satisfy a childquickly with a "new toy".Also, older children who know how tosew could make many of these with a little help from an adult friend orfamily member. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Their best price guide yet
Sanders are THE experts in autograph pricing and have been for years, this edition had chapters on matting and framing your collection, with web sites to get tools and materials, also a chapter on internet auctions andwatching out for forgeries which are prolific on the web.If you collectautographs, this book is a must!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disapointed in the lack of information
I waited a long time for this new edition to come out and it is a whopping 700 pages but, it spends half of its content lamenting the loss of the original author who died last year and reprinting articles I have fromearlier editions. The names were updated abit but the prices still seeminacurate. A disapointing end to a once prolific career for the author. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL ARRAY OF ROSES!
I'm a florist and I really enjoy using this book when I'm meeting with Wedding clients. It displays a large variety of different types of roses-great for the people who think of a rose as a single, red stem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...this is a great book
I heard of this book while flipping through a magazine.
5-0 out of 5 stars not just another pretty flower book
The photographs are so pretty.I gave several as a gift at a lunch the other day. However, the best thing about this little book is the information about roses and how to arrange them.It also provides names of every rose used and good alternatives to garden roses which are not readily available from my florist.I was able to overcome my fear of doing flowers for the first party in my new house! My husband thinks I should change careers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
There are so many techniques here I don't know which one to try first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic encyclopedia a must for SCA'ers and historians
While you may not set down to do Arabic-style embroidery or do fine handsewing, if you belong to historical recreation societies such as SCA or others, this book is an absolute must. The best chapter, in my opinion, is the one on handsewing, teaching the reader how to stitch as if they were a sewing machine. You need a cushioned lead weight to pin the piece out on--this holds it taut while you do a backstitch seam. Picking a hem, mattress stitch and other hand techniques are drawn in an old style of steel plate but very visible. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Info, Poorly Reproduced
After 112 years the information in this book is still as important as it was when it was first published. However, the quality of the reproduction in the images is appalling. I also have an edition from 1910 in which you can clearly see sections of many of the embroidery images that are almost totally blacked out in the anniversary edition.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome decorative techniques
I really love this book.If you are interested in heirloom sewing or just certain decorative techniques then this book is for you. There is even a section on indispensible techniques that every sewer should know such as zipper insertion, bias binding, different kinds of seam finishes, buttons and buttonholes etc.I really liked the free motion embroidery techniques since I love to embroider but my machine is NOT one of those fancy upscale embroidery machine.I learned that all I really needed was a machine with a simple zigzag stitch, the ability to lower the feeddogs, and a darning foot.I highly recommend this book to sewers of all levels since I still consider myself a beginner/intermediate sewer. There is specific directions and tools on what you need to complete your project. You won't be disappointed.Every sewer should own one to add a little pizzaz to their sewing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick and very practical reference book!
This is a great book, very well written and easy to understand (even for me who's native language is not english and sometimes has difficulty to understand!) and I fully recommend it for the novice as well as the advanced sewer. It is packed with so many different techniques that it's even hard to choose! At the beginning of each techinque you find a short explanation of what you'll actually learn about. Then the Machine Set-up comes: stitch length and width, presser foot, needles, threads, tension. Fabric Choices and if there is any Additional Supplies She lists that too. It also made it very easy on me before shopping, the list was readily waiting for me, so I didn't forget anything to buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Changed My Life
Given to me for my birthday and resident of an untouched gift-pile for weeks, Donata Maggipinto's "Everyday Celebrations" hid in plain sight like a sleeper cell in Dayton until one Saturday afternoon when I lay on the couch vacillating between dozing and rude wakefulness, suffering from yet another in a decades-long series of sleep-depriving sinus infections, I reached out, lifted the book to my chest, and opened to Ms. Maggipinto's screed "Putting Patience and Pink Impatiens in Your St. Vitus' Day Observance."

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding!
An incredible book which quickly became on of my favorite reference materials when studying antique painted furniture and reproducing authentic designs. Contains tips and techniques for your own projects and presents a good array of antique items as well. Very authoritative and offers sound advice on how to pull off complex projects without the complexities involved.
5-0 out of 5 stars You've got the best here!
You've seen those wonderful grained picture frames or pieces offurniture in the shops for thousands, but never went to a classbecause it was too expensive or none was offered in your area. This book is the answer to your prayers! It is filled with loads of photos of antiques and furniture, etc.that have been decorated with vinegar glazes or with handsome primative-style murals. It is also one of the few books that even reveals how to do smoke graining...the whispy finish on many an old rocking horse or on furniture and smalls. Just add this to your shelf which should also include THE ART OF FAUX by Finkelstein, PROFESSIONAL PAINTED FINISHES by Marx, and DECORATIVE FURNITURE FINISHES WITH VINEGAR PAINT by Russell. All are well worth the investment. Happy Painting!

5-0 out of 5 stars a great guide with terrific comparisons of new and old paint
These authors are among the best at recreating the look of old painted furniture/folk art.Very clear pictures are helpful. Also, they use an easy recipe (basically, vinegar, honey and pigment) which is easy toconcoct for new users, unlike mesy oil based potions or those horriblycomplex formulae or lousy British-based ingredients which noone has everheard of or found. For as cloise to instant gratification as you can get, this is the book to order for all beginners and intermediate grainers. (Advanced finishers can write heir own book.....)Enjoy!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surpassed Expectations
I am giving a workshop on creative gift giving.I needed information and ideas on different topics in the presentation.I ordered a number of "gift idea" type books. I did not have any expectations and I was pleasantly surprised with how informative and useful this book was.I would recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars True gifts
Finally, someone who understands that gifts are not about how much you spend or how much you can impress your friends. I love the way the book emphasizes simpler, but more loving offerings: homebaked goodies, fresh flowers, gifts of experiences rather than things (a round of golf, tickets to a play or movie, etc.). The book even shows inventive and personal ways that money can be given. Most of all, though, the beautiful photography and the passages about the philosophy of giving make this book a great resource for someone who wants to give meaningful and personal presents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
