3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent photos, difficult reading
Although the photos of beads are excellent, I found this book far too much like a PhD dissertation, with the feel of a synthesis, having substance but written in a format which was difficult to read. Bibliographic references imbedded in the text just add to the unreadable style. The text is painfully lacking in the kind of information I appreciate, such as dating, geography, and clear references to the individual beads presented in the photos. And references to values of beads in dollars has no relevant meaning unless there is a time reference. As a reference book I would rate it of minimal worth. As a coffee table amusement it is acceptable, but would need far more photos to make it useful for that purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book But Not For Beginners
This is a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated book, however, it is definitely for the advanced bead collector. Its main focus is on beads the average person could not find or afford. I am a beginner in the bead collecting world and needed a book that was more of an identifying guide. The chances of me running across a bead that was illegally excavated from an archeological dig in a foreign country are slim..and I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.I'm returning the book and continuing the search.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning work of art.
This is a work of immense proportions. Robert Liu is both a scholar and an artist. This is a work which draws on both sets of skills, and the result is wonderful. For bead lovers it's a definative work.As a scholarlypiece, it likely has material of interest to those interested in arthistory and world culture as well. It's an important book and one thatwould be sorely missed if it ever went out of print--I say this as onewho's passed on books like this, only to search the world over for themwhen they were no longer available...get this one now. You won't regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow!
This book is excellent! The author shows you step by step what you need to do to reupholster your piece of furniture. I used this book and was able to quickly learn what I needed to do to reupholster an old chair I own and looked like I bought a new chair from the store when I was finished. Since then, I have had family and friends asking me where I bought the "new chair!" I recommend this book to anyone wishing to do the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of VERY HELP information
Although a book could never substitute seeing first hand, how upholstery is done, this book provides very detailed information. The photos are dated, but the process of the work is not and very clearly explained.Definitely a good reference book to have for anyone learning upholstery who might need additional information.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent starting point

5-0 out of 5 stars great book -- learned a lot
this is a good book where i learned a lot of basic box making techniques and then branched off of from there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice and useful book
I was not disappointed with this book in terms of learning the basics to make nice boxes. Projects are varied in shape and techniques, in depth, with plenty of explanation. The necessary sections about wood preparation, movement etc... are all nice, as well as sections on tools and finishing. the info in there seems very objective and based on excellent experience. You will learn a lot from those projects and techniques. I like some designs and not others, but there are enough of them to satisfy anybody and learn enough basic techniques to elaborate from there.
4-0 out of 5 stars Big Help
All my previous wood working had been on a relatively large scale. So when I wanted to use the scrap wood to make small boxes, I didn't know where to start. This book has pointed me in the right direction as far as dimensions of the wood thickness, joinery, finnishing, and ideas. The book is good for both beginners and intermediate woodworkers. ... Good book for those just buying their first jeep.

1-0 out of 5 stars You can find better ones
Not a good book, not specialized in anything, when it actualy get to the poind of the explanation/suggestion it direct you to a local dealer (well thanks a lot)2-0 out of 5 stars To all TJ/YJ owners
Even though the newest edition says it has been updated to include up to the 1999 model, information on the YJ/TJ Wranglers is slim at best. It is only two stars for all YJ/TJ owners. This is s true CJ or classic Jeep owner book and has much info on those models. A lot info in this book is too basic. It needs severe updating for the newer models. I would rate it a four star for any CJ owner. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Greatideas to get your creative juices flowing
I got this book from the library prior to commiting to buying it. After ordering 8 books from Amazon this one wasn't one of them. Most of the ideas are too darn "cutsie" for me (i.e.cropping your baby's photos and putting mouse or bunny ears and whiskers is my definition of "cutsie"--not my style of scrapbooking, I'm not here to offend anybody who prefers this). The back of the book has lettering patterns and title ideas which anybody may find on numerous websites such as scrapbooking.com.I suggest this book is great for those begginers who need ideas for baby scrapbook themes: Documenting pre- & post-pregnancy, baby's firsts, baby's nursery, etc.It does not have much explanation on how the pages were constructed, but for my own sake I usually don't follow step-by-step,visualizing the parts of a layout from the photo itself. This book may be good for a beginner, but more advanced scrapbookers might find it too outdated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent idea book, but hard to replicate what you see.
There's a ton of pages to look at, but not as much information about technique as some other books I've seen. If you're already into scrapbooking and just need some fresh ideas, this could be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good creative ideas
I have been scrapbooking for years now and with baby #1 on the way wanted some additional creative ideas. This book does have some great ideas of varying complexity and documenting some of those moments that I may have not thought of.I recommend this for anyone doing baby pages. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Knot Book
This book gives clearly illustrated instructions on tying many very useful knots. It organizes them under headings of Sailing, Hiking and Climbing in which they are most commonly used. The author includes the strength of most of these knots which describes how much they weaken the lines in which they are tied - often leaving less than 50% of the original strength of the line! Some knots do not hold well when bending (you will learn the definition of this term, as well as "hitch" and "knot") together two ropes of unequal size. Maybe you should use a different knot?Budworth has a suggestion!
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to the world of knots...
I bought this book for my husband for Christmas, and we've both come to like it very much. Neither of us are "knot aficionados", as it were, but wanted a book which would allow us to explore some knots we might need in our outdoor activities (horseback riding, camping, sailing, etc.) As the beginners at knotmaking we are, this book has proven to be excellent for us.3-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT, Repeat DO NOT buy this book
There are better books for the beginner or intermediate. DAWSON'S book is nice, so is the MORROW BOOK OF KNOTS. Neither suffers from the deficiencies of Budworth's book. The faults include:Inadequate, minimal, poorly-written textual instructions;VERY poor illustrations, possibly even errors, make it very hard to figure out how to do the knots;A choice of hard-to-read sans serif type faces, make the text hard to read;Surprising omissions of some of the most useful knots. For example, the Marlinespike Hitch is a quick (1 second or so) way to put a temporary loop around a tool handle or rod anywhere along a line, to give you a 'handle' to pull on.; The author is purportedly a world-class expert on knots. Unfortunately, he is not an expert on putting a book together, and allowed his name to be put on something that reeks of a slopped together 'pastepot' job.Read more

Sergers offer project possibilities beyond the capabilities of ordinary sewingmachines, but they also seem to have more potential for malfunctioning. Help is at handfrom a book filled with solutions and troubleshooting advice for all manner of sergertroubles. My wife was a first time user of a serger that I bought her for Christmas (I know - great Christmas gift - but it was what she wanted!) - anyways, she tells me that this book is very helpful for providing a lot of useful hints past the basic instructions you get with a new serger - she would recommend it for anyone who usually needs just a little more hints tht a basic instruction guide provides

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
If you are new to serging or even experienced, you will find this book a valuable asset in your sewing library.I am new to serging and have found it to be a very helpful. Most owner/instruction manuals tell you how to thread and use your machine but don't get into a lot of detail about the actual how-to of serging or problem-solving.This book covers everything from needles to sewing with various types of threads to troubleshooting with lots of illustrations and photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I have a ton of knitting books and I have to say that this one is my favorite. The patterns are well written and not at all intimidating. This book doesn't take itself too seriously like one of my other faves, "Last Minute Knitted Gifts."I like "Knitting for Dummies" and "The Knitter's Companion" for instruction, so I didn't pay too much attention to the "how to" part of Knit Wit.It appears to me to be somewhat geared toward younger knitters, and also knitters who aren't super-experienced and who would want a challenging pattern (intarsia, for example).
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and unintimidating
I bought this book because I needed something for a rank beginner.I have started the first project, a 500 yard garter-stitch scarf.I couldn't figure out how to successfully cast on and knit until I bought this book.I especially like how it stands up with the inventive easel design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but sometimes too Funky
There are a lot of great projects in this book for knitters of all skill levels. There are some I truly love, like fuzzy feet and the pixie hat. Then there are some that are a bit scary, like the Freak Vest and the Jelly Belt. I like the information it provides for new knitters. She goes into good, but not excruciating, detail on differences in yarns, needles, and other important tools, as well as instruction on how to knit. It is written in a friendly, easy-going manner that is probably very helpful for nervous beginners, while not seeming like it is dumbed down and too simple for those with experience. It is a pretty good book, even if some of the projects are a bit scary. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought
I was thinking this would be a step-by-step process of how to sew different fabrics. It doesn't read like a book, either, just a fabric description....very sterile and NOT for the novice sewer at all.

Editorial Review

Originally published in 1909, "Handy Farm Devices" is more than an engaging trip down memory lane. For any small farmer or homesteader, the techniques and devices described in detail are just as useful, durable, and fully functional today as they were 75 years ago. You will learn to build a portable chicken coop, a stone boat (for moving stone), a lightweight orchard ladder, gates that don't sag, and a handy wood splitter, as well as rudimentary farm structures, well houses, bee hives, a baby's cradle, a cheese press and much more. The charming, turn-of-the-century language and useful and inspirational quotes from Shakespeare, the Bible, Bacon, Longfellow and many others make this book a delight to read. Read more

Yes this is a ver valuable book!Dont want to or just cant afford to buy or rent expensive machinery to do the basic farm duties many have done before the age of technology?THIS IS A MUST!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical, book
This book is filled with tons of little tricks and devices to make farm life easier. Much of the information is old and so it may not be of as much use to someone with a high tech farm, but if you still do some things the old fashioned way, this book probably has something that can help you. And even if you can't use the stuff, it's interesting to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure practicality & lots of nostalgia

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Set for a Beginner
I am not a total novice to calligraphy, but it has been many years since I practiced this art.The book contains all of the essential information a beginner needs to know, and some of the basic tools: pen holders, nibs, a brush, pencil and various colored inks. There is a spiral bound Technique Book, and a spiral bound Project Book.I may have missed this in the directions, but most calligraphers I've met find a tiny cosmetics jar with a tight fitting lid. After this has been washed very well cut out a piece of soft foam and place it in the jar, add the ink you'll be using and dip your pen in this jar for getting just the right amount of ink on y,ou pen. You practically eliminate the possibility of getting ink over your project or table.HTH!

5-0 out of 5 stars ABC's of Serging
Great book for both the novice and the experienced serger. The book has clear drawings and down to earth explanations on threading your serger, serging anything from cuffs, eleastic, shirring, french seams and lettuce edges. The book explains the importance on tension and little tricks for adjusting the same. You should not be without it if you are new to serging.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABC's of Serging:A Complete Guide to Serger Sewing Basics
The book is great!! I didn't know anything about serging and my serger came with very few instructions.I feel like I can use my serger now with confidence.Wonderful teaching tool!!Better than taking a class.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Step-by-Step Guide
This is an excellent guide to learning and using your serger. If you are a beginner and somewhat afraid of your new serger, this book will get you past that fear and on to using your new machine quickly. It gives you clear directions, step-by-step, to help you begin. It suggests keeping a notebook with notes of stitch settings and samples of your work as you try each technique, which I did.It is very helpful when you refer back to it later.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the most authoritative guides to furniture and lighting designs of the 20th and 21st centuries in print
The third edition of Jerryll Habegger and Joseph H. Osman's SOURCEBOOK OF MODERN FURNITURE should be on the reference shelves of ANY serious interior design collection. Appearing in its third revised edition, SOURCEBOOK provides one of the most authoritative guides to furniture and lighting designs of the 20th and 21st centuries in print, pairing color photos with features of works by hundreds of notable designers. Photos arranged by type of furniture or fixture make it simple for quick look-ups, while lists of suppliers and indexes of designers and manufacturers provide invaluable cross-referencing.
4-0 out of 5 stars new edition
did not someone write that they are coming out with a new edition in fall 2004?this is the only problem with this edition.it is not updated.soon to be resolved it seems.

5-0 out of 5 stars When the best gets better!!!
As predicted, the 3rd edition is OFF THE HOOK!!! The 3rd edition, published in 2005, has close to 700 new entries. Nearly half of the photos are in color and the authors have included web site information for manufacturers. This latest edition is in the collection of prominent museums and academic institutions across the globe, especially universities which have significant design and architecture programs. This is certainly a must have edition for the intellectually astute connoisseur of furniture and design.

Editorial Review

The title of this book could not be more explicit or apt. With 40 actual wood specimens in popular use, descriptions of grain, color and texture, how to identify trees by their leaves, fruit, and bark, and much more, this is a small encyclopedia for woodworkers, carpenters, hobbyists, dealers, architects, craftsmen, nature lovers, teachers, or anyone with the urge to learn about wood. With small, aromatic samples of 40 varieties of wood, from afrormosia to zebrawood, this book even smells good! --Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Focus On European Not USA Species
This book is of little value for the woodworker trying to identify woods commonly used on the American continent. When the species are described (with wood samples provided) the European varieties are given to the exclusion of woods from this continent.Species vary enough from the Euopean continent to make the book of very little use in identifying American woods and can even be misleading. The grain pattern on Birch is a classic example and Birch is used a great deal on funiture.4-0 out of 5 stars Quiet and straightforward
This is a very friendly and straightforward book. It starts with veneer samples (quite small, but big enough) of 40 woods and finishes with descriptions of the trees that yield these 40 woods.5-0 out of 5 stars Great samples. Great book.
If your working on a project involving exotic woods, then this book should be added to your library. The REAL wood samples are great. The book also has very useful information about many types of wood. I find this book tobe a handy reference tool and am glad to have added it to my collection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
I was looking for a book on making rings and creating stone settings for them, and this is it.It has been the catalyst for a bracelet, the synclastic ring on Pg 46 for the general shape, and Mount 9 on page 85 with a cabochon of my own cutting. The information is more applicable than just rings, and the techniques for creating mounts has also worked well on my pendants. It has proved well worth the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
I was a little disappointed. This book is geared more for the person who wants to make rings from scratch i.e., grinding, cutting, filing, soldering, etc. I was looking for instructions and photos on how to mount precious stones into already made 4 and 6 prong ring settings, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars well done!
I'm very picky about any instructional book that I buy, it can be hard to find good ones, with clear instructions, enough detail and enough breath of projects. This is one that I would recomend. It has clear directions on the ring shanks, setting and mounting the stones. It focus on certain aspects, but also mentioned related items, like working with platium, casting and a few other alternatives. Enough is mentioned that you can get a start with it if you wish, but doesnt croud the pages with out of topic information. The only thing I could wish changed is the "formula" for creating the correct sized settings. This is the only section that isnt very clear (to me). It can use a few more images there, and some more explination, but I think i have it figured out. (its only 1.5 pages out of over 100)

Editorial Review

Since the cost of framing often exceeds the price of the artwork itself, it pays to know how to do it yourself. This book offers thorough background on all the basics--measuring, mounting, matting, glazing materials, and frames--for both archival and non-archival techniques. Even if you're not ready to invest in specialty tools like a mat cutter or miter box, you'll find useful instructions on working with ready-made frames using simple tools (a ruler and utility knife). In addition to coverage of traditional artwork, directions are provided for specialty items, such as tiles and needlework, and for incorporating slightly dimensional items on the mat to accent the framed piece. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good on all but technique
As a total beginner, I thought this book was very strong on presenting information about materials and archival vs. non-archival and such. However, I found the author's instructions on specific techniques to be lacking...I often had to read them many times just to understand a fairly simple procedure.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is worth its weight in gold!
As a beginning framer, I found this book to be a wealth of valuable information on equipment and techniques. It covers every aspect of framing and answered most, if not all, of my questions. This is a wonderfulresource for anyone interested in learning the art of framing.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one gives you your money's worth of useful information!
This is simply the best book currently out there for the do-it-yourself framer. In particular, after looking at dozens of books in libraries andbookstores, it's the only book I found that really gives satisfactoryattention to archival considerations, pros and cons of different methods ofmounting artwork, and protection of the framed materials from moisture inthe environment (a real area of concern if you're living in an extremelyhigh-humidity region, as I am!). After an hour or so of browsing throughthe book, I already felt I had gotten my money's worth in answeredquestions and useful information. Everything the beginner needs to know, plus a little more in-depth information for those of us who have alreadylearned the basics. Recommended! ... Read more
