5-0 out of 5 stars One of The Best Sock Books Out
I am won over by this book by Lucy Neatby for her creativeness in sock design, fantastic explanation of every thing related to sock knitting and humor infused writing. It starts off with a basic pattern then as you look further into the book, really nice designs are added (such as crenalated cuffs). This wonderful book has also enabled me buy more sock yarn - another sign of a really good book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Resin at its best
Kathie Murphy produces an excellent book which gives you an insight into the many types of resin, the pros and cons of using each type together with safety information.
4-0 out of 5 stars great book
I like this book not only because it explains the technique of resin casting very well, but also for its beautiful pictures of real resin art. Although I will never be able to produce such work, you get the feeling that she sky is the limit with this material

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Euro/English to American translation
This is another of the published both sides of the pond at the same time. The only problem with this book is the lack of carefull editing done by the U S publisher krause publications.

I had never made candles before buying this book. This book gives GREAT advice on everything from designs to supplies. The projects shown in the book are wonderfully described, and the pictures are so good you could use them alone if you wanted! The author does a great job of explaining the little things that I never would have thought of on my own. This is a must have for anyone who is new to candlemaking!

3-0 out of 5 stars KUDOS AND CAVEATS
I bought this book when I needed information on BASIC care of my antiques of all sorts, including reviving leather on furniture and gilding on pictures, as well as polishing etc. To a small extent I got that. But most of the techniques in this book --most notably inthe section on upholstery -- while clear, leave a dangerous impression of ease. For almost any of them, you need a degree of skill that would make much of the advice unnecessary. Don't try upholstering anything from this book or you'll have a dead sofa! Theory is only a small part of handcraft. Even hand's on basic courses aren't enough. incidentally, if you want to clean gilt, say, forget it, though Miller tells you how to regild. NOT a basic care manual, in fact!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth coverage of the topic
If you're someone faced with antique for the first time (like I was), this is exactly what you need. The book addresses all the repairs I'll have to do on my furniture and silverware, lists all the necessary material andtools as well as documents the procedures you have to follow. Highlyrecommended. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Adjectives without enough detail
I dislike purchasing books that offer more in the title than they deliver.I would have preferred more specifics in this book than narrative generalities.B/W photos were poor. The promised section on booth design left me with more questions than answers. This book offers nice filler information, but if you're looking for nuts and bolts, look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nightmare on Christmas
Read the review carefully -- I didn't and I'm sorry. The Publisher's Weekly review called their designs "gaudy" and boy are they right.Who in the world would have a Christmas tree in their house with a full sized mannequin stuffed into the tree dressed to look like Joan Crawford or Marilyn Monroe? And get this -- in the Joan Crawford tree, they have swan ornaments which -- everyone will know when they see them -- represent Ms. Crawford's transformation from ugly duckling to swan.Or how about the Lucille Ball tree -- disembodied hands holding brushes sticking out of the branches.I won't even get into the Cher tree, because it scared me.These people need to be visted by the ghosts of Christmas and have their heads straightened out. Please don't judge Los Angeles by these people -- I've lived here all my life and have never seen anything like this. This is a true nightmare before Christmas!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Christmas decs, you'll enjoy this book!
Amazing decorated trees with different themes. Very American and very O.T.T but great for putting you in the mood for Christmas. Wonderful photographs!

3-0 out of 5 stars Preparation Chapter best part of the book
Debbie Travis' books are a mixed bag. Some of them I really like and some are scarce on steps and details. This book falls into the latter category. The best part of the book to me were the two chapters, "Preparing your Project for Decoration" and "The Professional Touch". These chapters cover repairs of pieces, sanding, stripping, glazes and how to tint glazes, plaster, varnishes, stains, etc. and the best way to apply them for a professional finish.
3-0 out of 5 stars Just not enough
I agree with other reviewers that this book has some great projects, some of which I plan to do, and it gave me some very good ideas. The problem for me is too few pictures and, in some cases, incomplete instructions.
1-0 out of 5 stars Better books on the market than this one.
This book looks good at first glance, but then it falls apart. The nice colored pictures cannot compensate for the poor hints and guidelines in creating the same effects. Also, many of the finished projects were downright ugly.

This is the best of the mechanical/whirligig books I've run across. Beautiful color photographs and detailed illustrations of Frost's very strange toys including dancing lumberjacks, boxing angels and demons, machine-gunning whirligigs, and the wonderfully painted 'houses' that hold the hand-cranks that give life to these creatures. 5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
It's about time this book was written.I found it insightful and thoughtfully written.Donald Clark has presented the world of marketing and selling your craft to the novice in a way that makes sense of it all. From the wonderfully asthetically pleasing layout to the expert perspectives this book was a joy to read. The advice given is advice that I will take to heart as I enter the business of making art. Hopefully, I will be as successful as the artists that are fortunate enough to be represented by Donald Clark. This book is a must for anyone who has thoughts of entering this world and looking for truth of how to make that happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST fine craft business bok out there
I've read a number of art/craft business books over the years and this is the book I've been missing. The most specifically helpful section is the chapter on pricing. This book provides a step by step formula for setting your prices based on your materials, labor, and overhead and marketing costs.I have not read another book that gave such information, and as a result, setting my prices has always been a bit of a guessing game.If you want to earn money from your fine crafts, read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Donald Clark's Making a Living in Crafts is a book long over due.
Clark's stance is clear, "The sale of the work of art completes the creative process."He is reassuring; you will not be a "starving artist."He teaches you how to make your business legal, how to price your work, how to get your work in shops, galleries, and on the show circuit. He shares insight on how to participate in the online marketplace, how to write a business plan, how to develop positive relationships with customers and collectors, how to make a lasting impression with excellent photography, and how to write the dreaded artist statement. He provides you practical templates that help you pencil out your marketing costs inventory, overhead costs inventory, pricing sheet, and simple cost worksheet. He inserts essays and interviews with top gallery owners, shopkeepers, collectors, artists, and crafts persons, so you can gain valuable insights on where your work is suited. This book is a welcomed addition as a textbook in any college course where students want to eventually sell their crafts, arts, and designs. For those of you who are self-taught, working on weekends and vacations, making one-of-a-kind objects or production work, this book will guide you through a clear curriculum on how to complete the creative cycle by selling your work. For those of you who are "old hands" in the making of art and craft, this book will fill in gaps you were unaware existed in your knowledge. For those of you who doubt Donald Clark's stance, the final chapters on nurturing your creativity will provide practical ways to remain creative.

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of art!
There have been other fine books that show and describe bamboo in Japan, both plants and craft, but no other book has so effectively shown how this remarkable plant has shaped a culture in all of its aspects, from the roots of its language, to its cuisine, its art, and its commerce---from the most mundane tools of daily life to the most sublime aspect of art and spirit. Beautifully designed, the book itself is a work of art, with text and photographs woven together in such a way that one finds that one has not simply read a book about a topic, but has become a part of that experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificent book!
BAMBOO IN JAPAN is one of the most exciting and beautiful books I've read in years.During her many years of researching in Japan, Bess discovered that bamboo contributes to every aspect of Japanese life: from architecture to religion, from household goods to children's toys.Bamboo is made into fans, baskets, kites, fences, tea ceremony whisks and scoops; into rakes, blinds, lanterns, spoons, dolls, umbrellas, fish rods, swords, and even into musical instruments such as the eerie, reedy shakuhachi. The book is filled with fascinating facts and anecdotes. Ancient documents chronicle the use of a small bamboo knife that was thought to have magical powers, and so was used to cut the umbilical cord after birth. In the 17th century an ordinance mandated that peasants plant bamboo in order to use the leaves for fuel.Did you know that some varieties of bamboo grow so quickly that one can actually watch them grow?Or that the adult plant is strong enough to support traditional scaffolding tens of stories high, yet delicate enough to be cut into fibers hardly wider than a hair?A Japanese folktale describes a bamboo cutter's discovery of a beautiful miniature princess in a bamboo shoot.Additionally, Bess includes resources for observation and research in Japan and in the US.An internationally known textile and basket craftsperson, Bess has produced a book so vibrant and colorful, it will grow and grow sky high in your imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULINSTRUSTIONS! BEAUTIFUL PICTURES!
I would have liked to give this book a 10 STAR rating. I bought this book not just for the purses BUT for the clear and very easy to follow directions for the weaving! I used the stitches I learned in this book for other projets. I am a visual learner and this book is better than more $$$$ books I bought just to learn the stitches. Color through out. I did not find any of the colors muted as another stated.
1-0 out of 5 stars Do not choose if you are looking to make high fashion bags
I totally disliked this book...if you want to make craft show type stuff then perhaps this is a good choice but I came lloking for info on how to make high fashion high quality beaded handbags likened to some of todays top designers and thisbag did not even stracth the surface of what I needed.I would only suggest this book for those looking to make little trinkets in thier spare time certainly not for resale.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concentrates on beaded purses
Start at the cover of this book that features five necklaces. You'll say, "Wow!How can I make these gorgeous little necklace purses?"Author Enid Taylor shows you how.Bead stitching is pretty much the same from book to book, offering the same techniques shown here: brick, square, peyote, and netting stitches. This book is special because Enid shows you how those stitches combine to make a fabulous purse.Enid, a home economics teacher for 24 years, started a craft studio in 1982, so there's lots of teaching experience behind her book.Although her craft studio's focus was on lacemaking, spinning, and needlework, her expertise in beading shines through. Not only are there many techniques shown for the body of the purses, but there are multiple ways shown to make the neckchains and fanciful decorative finishes. If your aim is to concentrate your efforts on amulet necklaces, this is the book for you! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource if you are computer literate
This is a good reference for general information about using a computer to enhance or create art. The author mainly uses Adobe products, such as Photoshop and Illustrator for editing images and graphics. Before you will be able to create these projects, you have to be familiar with your software AND have software to create some of the effect (image editor, paint and graphics program). If you are looking for a book that specifically tells you how to do these things, that will not be found here. You have to be "computer-literate" and software-literate to get the most from this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars starting point for computer crafts
Ashford knows the art of computer craftmaking and provides the reader with very good starting points for crafts that intertwine computer and manual art. Regarding hardware/software she clearly favors Mac/Adobe, so her recommendations reflect this.In spite of this slant, she gives some helpful overviews of the technological side of various formats, graphic standards, etc.5-0 out of 5 stars Restoring modesty to the artist's tool enriches everyone
The potential of the computer in craft has been seriously damaged by the excitement computers have generated.A parallel can be found when the Russian novelist Tolstoy was given a dictaphone to help speed up his writing. After a few weeks he threw it out the window. His neighbor asked if it didn't work.Tolstoy's reply was "It worked fine, but I got so excited using it I couldn't write." For almost two decades a generation of designers have succumbed to the excitement and hype of the computer without significantly adding any real content or substance to their work under the digitized banner. It is time for that to change, and Janet Ashford is a winning harbinger of that change.Read more
