2-0 out of 5 stars Way beyond beginner
This book is your standard seed bead how-to fare.First you learn the stitches, followed by projects using the stitches. The trouble with this book is that the projects are far beyond beginner level. If you are just starting out with seed beads, their size alone is daunting, so look for a book with easier projects.

3-0 out of 5 stars Art of Seed Beading
I was disappointed not to find more jewelry patterns in this book. The first chapters have very helpful and enlightening descriptions about types of seed beads and how they are made. The instructions on basic stitches are well-described, also; however, I found many of the projects themselves to be of little general interest given what one finds in most other beading books.(I realize that this could be my own bias!)With a title as general as "the Art of Seed Beading," I thought there would be more instructions on how to alter basic techniques such as peyote or netting to create unique pieces.I did like a couple of the projects, though, and I found the opening chapters very helpful and useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Projects, OK Instructions
I bought this book for the patterns... especially a wonderful elephant necklace... and they are great.Unfortionately, I also bought this book to learn from and ended up with alot of trial and error time before I understood the directions. She doesn't explain how to hold the work in order to maintain tension only mentions that it is important. The pictures of techniques are misleading but if you ignore them and read the instructions only it makes alot more sense.Good point though... the projects are not as hard as they look and come out wonderfully. All in all this book was well work the money. ... Editorial Review

Noted Victorianist Cynthia Hart turns her talented hand to this wildly popular craft with great success, declaring, "Creating a scrapbook is one of the most powerful ways to celebrate our lives and the lives of loved ones." Hart packs into these pretty pages just about everything you need to know: all the basics, plus full-color glimpses of more than two dozen imaginative scrapbook designs on a wide variety of themes (family milestones, celebrating the past, kid subjects, holidays, and much more). There's also a nice section of clip art, patterns, and templates that can be photocopied for use in your own scrapbooks. This volume is about much more than having fun with your photos; this is a guide to making a book of memories, an artful presentation of memorabilia on whatever subject you choose. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, user-friendly, and extremely inspiring!
CYNTHIA HART'S SCRAPBOOK WORKSHOP: A Complete Guide to Preserving Memories in Archival, Heirloom-Quality Books (Workman Trade Paperback, $19.95, 1998) 4-0 out of 5 stars Not your usual book of layouts!
If you're buying this book for more layout ideas, you might want to look elsewhere.Yes, there are plenty of ideas but the focus here is on the entire album - not the individual pages.Cynthia Hart shows the reader how to actually craft an album - from cover to cover (literally).About 90 pages are devoted to instruction, 90 pages are devoted to designs and about 50 pages are of art and templates (which can be copied for personal use). The scrapbook designs range from the usual wedding scrapbook to a rollerblade scrapbook. There's even a horse show book made in the shape of a horse's head!Supply lists, color photos and instruction are included with each design. While I may never be as creative as Cynthia Hart, I'll view my scrapbooking from a new perspective thanks to her book!

1-0 out of 5 stars If you are new to scrapbooking pass this one up
Sure it has beautiful layouts and if you are not a newbie you might enjoy it. It is way to advanced to start out with. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
I LOVED JUST LOOKING AT THIS BOOK. THE IMAGINATION OF THE WHIRIGIGS AT THE FRONT OF THE BOOK WAS JUST AMAZING. THEY WERE LIKE WORKS OF ART. THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE ONES YOU ACTUALLY MAKE ARE NOT THAT ELABORATE THOUGH. BUT IT GIVES YOU LOTS OF IDEAS FOR WHEN YOU GET REALLY GOOD.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the easiest whirligig book to understand on the market!
I teach arts and crafts at a summer camp in the North Georgia mountains and am always looking for some fun, original folk art to do with the kids. After buying several other whirligig books on the market, I decided to buy this one, hoping it would be easier to understand. It was! Additionally, the photo gallery is phenominal. Whimsical works of art laughing in the breeze. If you are interested in building whirligigs, this would be the first book I would recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
This book is filled with good quality color pictures of many projects. It also explains how to make the complicated parts of wind toys.It tells what kinds of wood will hold up, and what kinds of wood will fail.It improved my whirligig designs greatly, and added many new ideas for my new ones. Well worth the money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice basic how-to for new scrapbookers, but dated
Joanna Campbell Slan is apparently one of the most popular scrapbook writers on the market today, and with good reason. She writes clearly and warmly, has a winning style full of humor and a down-to-earth point of view. Her books are informative and knowledgeable; they also fill many gaps in the scrapbooking industry.5-0 out of 5 stars Not your ordinary Scrapbooking book!
This book is not just a book of great layouts, though it certainly has those! And it's not just tips on journaling either.Joanna Campbell Slan does an outstanding job of teaching you how to tell the stories behind your pictures.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the perfect page
So many scrapbookers are so focused on making their pages as pretty as possible that they lose sight of why even create albums in the first place. This book is a short but entertaining and absorbing read that brings us back to the importance of preserving our legacies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Validating my addiction
I had been scrapping for a little less than 5 years when I bought this book.I never could put into words why it was so important to me.This book says it all.It helped me to see that my efforts weren't futile. My mother, who doesn't scrap, read this book and said that it is an inspiration for everyone.A must read for all scrapbookers and family historians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very inspiring!
I am a CM consultant who doesn't have much time to scrap due to 2 little ones running around, but when I opened this book, I felt very, VERY guilty about not scrapping more!If I were to die tomorrow, would my albums show my children and husband how much I loved them?I like to think so, but this book truly inspired me to try to find, no, MAKE more time to work on my own albums. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Mountainman Crafts and Skills:A Fully Illustrated Guide...
This is a worthwhile book only if you aren't very concerned about historical authenticity or the material culture of the fur trade period. If you want to make gear with greater historical authenticity you are better off studying the Book of Buckskinning series by Scurlock. The Scurlock series is based on evolving scholarship, and has improved with every volume as historical and material culture research has revealed more knowledge to students of that period in history.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great- for tiny people???
Okay, now, I am not an overweight person. However, I am 6 feet tall, which basically requires that I have a 36 inch bust, even without much of a bosom. The sizing in this book is not unusually generous, and I feel that this would be limiting to many knitters.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the patterns
I love most of the patterns in this book. A few strike me as dowdy, and I agree that the vintage look was often too updated, but there are many demurely sexy sweaters to choose from.
3-0 out of 5 stars A little dissapointed in this book...
There are several cute patterns, but they all kind of look alike. So many short sleeved, close fitting sweaters. And I was really disappointed that many of the patterns don't having sizing over bust size 36".I'm not that big of a person, but would like a little more ease in my garments, so I think 36" is pretty limited.I don't think I'll be making many of these patterns, unfortunately. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in content, but some inspiring photos.
As an experienced bookmaker, I was anxious to try some of the projects in this book. BE VERY CAUTIOUS!I found many errors in measurments in this book, which can cost you valuable paper and time! This book can be very vague about what size your papers should be and exactly how much of it you need.If you simply rely on what the author says, you may find yourself frustrated with a project that didn't work out.5-0 out of 5 stars A direct, to-the-point, "user friendly" instructional guide
The collaborative effort of self-employed book artist Mary McCarthy and educator/writer Philip Manna, Making Books By Hand: A Step-By-Step Guide is a direct, to-the-point, "user friendly" instructional guide to the art and craft of creating beautiful and useful scrapbooks, photo albums, diaries, blank books, and more. Full-color photographs illustrate each part of the process of crafting accordion art books, photo albums, box books, scrolls, etc. Making Books By Hand is commended as being first-rate guidebook for those interested in cultivating their skill in a unique and satisfying hobby, or who want to make exceptional and memorable gifts for friends and loved ones.
