Editorial Review

When viewing the magnificent floral forms that Candace Kling creates, it'ssometimes hard to believe that they are actually pleated, gathered, ruched, and twistedribbons--not the real thing. Her gorgeous ribbon flowers appear to be extremely intricateand complicated, but her extensive directions and diagrams take the mystery out ofrecreating everything from roses to pansies to poppies to daffodils. After nearly twodecades of researching antique ribbon work, her knowledge of vintage pieces is evidentin much of her work and in her finely tuned sense of color. The many photos of vintageribbon-work flowers, not to mention those of her own artistry, are themselves worth theprice of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Directions Ever!
I've seen most of the ribbon flower books that there are--and this is pretty much the best.It has instructions that are clear and very easy to follow and there are so many different ideas for you to use.Not just a couple of projects--so many for you to combine.I have taken this book out of the library so many times that I wanted to keep it.Then I remembered I could buy it online!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best book on Ribbonwork!
This is the best book on ribbonwork. It incorporates many beautiful pictures of vintage and some contemporary work. The entire book is instructional (no silly projects to fill the pages!!!). The instructions are excellent and this is as close to a "beginners" introduction to the subject as I have been able to find. At first I was disappointed that there were very few photographs of instructions. Often the instructions use drawings and often drawings are the only examples of the completed piece. But, what I have come to love is the lack of pictures for instruction. This book achieves something many art/craft books fail to. It requires you to practice, to use a variety materials and to create your own color combinations. It makes the "copying" of another's work no concern, because basically, you cannot. The subject is so well covered you will have an understanding of it: from foliage, to flowers, to stabilizing your work for wear on clothing, hats, and pins, to stems and buds, to flat and dimensional, to texture and how to preserve your work, etc. I haven't found a better book and I do not expect to. I thank the author for covering subjects like the movement, or "dance," of the work and for challenging me with the drawings - to try it and then see how it looks. Last but not least, the author introduces a great way to figure how much ribbon you will need to make any project using any ribbon width! So you can make ANY size flower you want. Ms. Kling makes your journey an unexpectedly easy fall - into a creative medium more satisfying than anything I've dabbled in besides beads - which one can incorporate too, of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute "Eye Candy" for the "Ribbonaholic"
This book has got to be one of the best and most comprehensive books out there on ribbonwork. It not only showcases the antique items where the colors have faded to perfect glory, but also incorporates the new and runs the gamut from embroidering with silk ribbon to forming flowers and bows of the ribbons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a how-to book
The lady from California is right: beautiful and stunning. A superb coffee table book BUT not a how-to let me show you how one. If you want to make these projects you'll have to buy them from her OR get the Ann Cox Beginner's Guide and learn how.Ms. Eriksson's directions are rather sketchy and terse. An unfortunate after-effect of thiis terseness is that the book feels more like a catalogue, hence the coffee book category, than a craft manual.5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
I spied this at a craft show about 6 months ago and just had to take it home with me, even though I have never done any ribbon embroidery. This book is gorgeous. Large, high gloss, full color page after, full color page clearly showing the most amazing life-like ribbon embroidery floral arrangements. The instructions are clear and detailed patterns are presented for the projects. The artist works mainly with variegated silk ribbons and she explains how to choose and take advantage of their qualities to achieve her results, along with detailed how-to-stitch diagrams. The works is of the highest caliber similar to the types of projects seen in Australian embroidery magazines. Even if you never make a project, you can learn a great deal from her stunning compositions and color usage. Buy it as a pattern book or to enjoy as a luscious coffee table book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ribbon Masterpieces
Wow! Here is a book with a refreshing view, showcasing the artistry of someone who is not mired in the terminal beginner's, cutesy, tacky and "me too" mode that crowd every "craft" magazine, supplyshop, book, and all too many television shows today. Helena Erikssondisplays a true artisan's grasp of what can be done with a littleimagination and very importantly, quality of fabric (even though many ofher color choices center around mauves!)Somehow, no matter how laborintensive and complicated her silk flower projects appear, this book caninspire anyone to give it a try - make something beautiful - and go beyondthe mediocrity of all the basic, boring, sameness!A beautiful book - abeautiful presentation - highly recommended for all of us fanatics of silkribbons and flowers! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the lady knows her stuff
I enjoyed looking at all Ann Cox's designs and easy to follow instructions. I bought her book for beginners, and this is easy to follow as well, with beautiful and inspiring designs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Visual Guide for Beginners
This is a wonderful book if you're looking for a visual guide to help you get started. I had never done silk ribbon embroidery before, but I was easily able to create beautiful roses, leaves and stems. The many full color photos are taken very close up so you can really see each step clearly. After you've made a few petals and leaves, you'll see how easy it is to create stunningly beautiful embroideries using only a few, simple stitches. You'll also learn how to paint a background, and how to mount and frame your work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner's Book!
This book will give you every bit of information you'll need to get started in silk ribbon embroidery. The step-by-step instructions and pictures are nearly as good as having a personal instructor!I was amazed by the amount of information packed into this thin book. You'll be able to make dozens of different types of stitches with the information you find here. This book is well planned and (surprisingly) covers even such details as painting in a background for your work!Worth every penny you pay for this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Ribbon Crafting Books!
Helen Gibb is the best at reintroducing the Victorian Art of Ribboncraft and offering practical projects for today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures, a real treat!
I came across this book at a local craft shop and quickly became enthralled by the beautiful projects.I have never done ribbonwork before nor even thought about doing it.But once I saw this book I very much wanted to learn!
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a stunning and beautiful book!
Helen Gibb has once again prepared a book that not only teaches the art of ribbonwork, but is an eye appealing treasure, blending directions for creating ribbonwork pieces of today with those of the past. Beautiful examples of past treasures have been painstakingly arranged and photographed. The book is enjoyable to peruse just to marvel at the beautiful antique pieces she displays. Her love of the antique handwork is evident and her work is tasteful and eye appealing.Helen's first ribbonwork book was beautiful and her new book is another example of her high quality and standard. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kumiko Suko's Books opens a new art form.
Each one has brought succulent abundance of devine offerings to feed one's creativity. As a watercolorist the exciting world of color has been understood. Now within the world of Fabrics, Kumiko has illustrated wondrous exciting ways again with color.
5-0 out of 5 stars With full-color photographs and diagrams
Compiled and written by internationally renowned quilt and fiber artist Kumiko Sudo, Folded Flowers: Fabric Origami With A Twist Of Silk Ribbon is a carefully crafted, "user friendly", step-by-step instructional guide to creating beautiful floral-style decorations out of cloth and silk. Full-color photographs and diagrams fill this very highly recommended guide to a fascinating and lovely art, which is especially commended for quilter and cloth crafters from the novice beginner to the experienced and seasoned expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun!
I was so excited to hear that Kumiko Sudo had a new flower book out! I loved Fabled Flowers and I like this one even better! The photos are beautiful and the patterns are so nicely laid out that I could follow them without any problem. For a visual learner like me, that--and lots of pictures--is exactly what I need. I made two of the flower designs the first weekend after buying the book. I used some of my favorite floral fabrics and they look wonderful. I love Rose Hortensia--little fairy faces peeking out of the flowers . . . so cute! I can't wait to get started on one of the purse designs . . . Marcie in Chicago ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Designs, So-So Instructions
I own both the 1st and 2nd book from these authors.I've made 4 different leis from the first book, and am starting to get a feel for the techniques. The instructions really could be better, but they've been adequate for my needs. It would be nice if the authors could have included more step-by-step close-up photographs, and as already suggested in another review, more sources for the supplies and materials.(In my case, I've just substituted regular needles and nylon fishing line for the special needles and thread).I was able to find the recommended brand of ribbon from an online source (www.jkmribbon.com), for anyone who's having trouble locating the stuff.Since the book doesn't include difficulty ratings for each design, I can only suggest that the reader look closely at the instructions, and choose his/her first projectcarefully.I'm not a serious crafter, but I've been able to create really impressive leis on my first attempts.Since these books are about the only ones dealing with this type of project, I feel they're worth the reasonable purchase price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great instruction - but impossible to find supplies!
I bought both books 1 & 2 and I really love them the instruction is uncomplicated & easy to follow. However finding the supplies you need (if you don't live in Hawaii) is not easy!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for those interested in this craft!
I belong to a hula halau and recently we were each required to make ribbon leis for a fundraiser. I thought this book was very useful in instructing me on how to make more unique kinds of leis versus the most simple and common technique. The designs included in this book are wonderful and made my leis bestsellers! Using your creativity, you can use different types of ribbons to create interesting textures and looks. Great pictures, easy instructions, all around good book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars more content, less passion, please!
I like this book.Or, rather, I *really* like everything thatcomes after page 68.The first 68 pages, however, gives us anot-so-brief overview on the history of ribbonry in fashion ....We're also treated to beautiful photos of the author's work, whereI've discovered her love for the combination of pink and green.... but as the title of this book states _A PASSION for Ribbonry_,perhaps the purpose of this book was to talk about the author'sdevotion to ribbons and ribbonwork.5-0 out of 5 stars A Passion for Ribbonry
I think this is a wonderful book.I have most of the books on ribbon flowers and each one has something to offer that the other doesn't have. The instructions are very good and easy to follow.Camela gets into ribbonfolding techniques that are not in the other books and I find that veryinteresting and useful in decorating. She gives directions for moreunusual flowers and these are very nice to use in mixed floral bouquets. This beautiful book is a must for any one that loves to do ribbon flowers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but hard to duplicate
I should have realized that a book by Cheryl Potter would focus on her yarns -- which are stunning, but quite expensive. The book offers some beautiful designs, but does a good job of convincing you that mixing types of yarns requires a lot of experimentation and can be prone to much disappointment. Of course, they want you to use the ones that they list. But now I'm a bit wary of using the yarns I have instead of the ones they're selling. I'll probably get over this and try my own combinations, since the end results ARE very enticing! But I'll have to keep looking for a more generic discussion of how to approach mixing yarns, both from the standpoint of how they look and also how to adapt gauge, needle size, etc. -- this one doesn't do that. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Breast Cancer Survivor loves Pink Ribbon Quilts
Before I developed breast cancer, I saw an episode of Simply Quilts on HGTV featuring the author of this book and was SO inspired by it.While recovering from surgery and radiation therapy in 2001, I made several Pink Ribbon blocks with a pattern from Pink Ribbon Quilts and gave to breast cancer survivors.I'm sure in the near future, I'll be tackling one of the beautiful quilts patterns in the book. I would highly recommend this book to any quilter and/or breast cancer survivor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Come for the Cause, Stay for the Designs
The title attracted my attention because one of my stitching friends had recently lost her battle with breast cancer. But after leafing through the book I realized I had to add it to my growing collection of quilt booksbecause it had so many wonderful designs, all made easy by speed cuttingtechniques and easy-to-read diagrams. The designs are a combination oftraditional patches (with fresh colorways) and some original designs. Allskill levels are represented, so the projects can challenge the experiencedor provide quick yet exquisite results for the beginner.5-0 out of 5 stars a unique addition to the plethora of quilting books
I highly recommend this Mimi Dietrich book for the following reasons:1.The 11 step-by-step projects range in size and difficulty, but most are small and personal and the kind of items one can make and give as gifts. These are not involved projects that take years to complete!2.Thepages of tips that accompany the quilts are full of sound advice forfriends and caregivers as well as for cancer patients themselves. 3.Two percent of the net sales benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast CancerFoundation (one of the largest private funders of research in the U.S.dedicated soley to breast cancer). The book is a gift to quilters andpatients alike! We buy the book; they get more funds for research! ... Read more
