5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
This book is required reading for anyone wishing to enter the Oriental carpet business. It is also a fabulous reference source for the home buyer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible reference!!
This book is definitely worth every penny! It goes into great detail on the different types of rugs, the history of the people (from a rug making perspective). There are beautiful pictures of rugs as examples, maps showing both the old names of areas as well as those in use today. The writing style is fun to read (not overly dry). The first 80 mpgs or so are dedicated to the rug and rumaking tself - construction, dyes, design, the people who make them. The rest of the book is broken down into the different areas where rugs were/are made. These sections provide great details on the specifics of the styles of rugs produced by those people, why they use certain colors etc.Excelent excellent book!I'd buy it again in a heart beat. Its a big book so its not so easy to take on a trip but a great book to have at home to read through and learn from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good!
A bit pricy but worth it.I bought it to read on my way to the UAE/Bahrain.I was planning on buying a carpet and this went a long way towards helped me to know what I was looking at and what to look for.A great book for the novice and experienced, alike.Everybody wanted to borrow it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sewer's Must-Have
Everyone else has already said it so well... don't spend another moment's hesitation on whether to buy it or not... just buy it!It is absolutely the sewer's bible! And I loved the comment about bringing it with you to the fabric store.I do a lot of fabric and pattern buying online and I have found that I don't complete the purchase without first referring to this book!Okay, 'nuff said!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Fabric Savvy
I LOVE this book. There is everything you will ever need to know about sewing any type of fabric successfully. Do not hesitate to get your own copy. You won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
This is one of my 3 main sewing references. (All 3 by Betzina! The other two are Power Sewing and Fast Fit.) I learned to sew when I was 8. Twenty years later, I've taken it up again, and am very appreciative of these books. This book teaches you which needles, interfacing, seam finishes, threads, hems, presser feet (and more) to use with each type of fabric. This knowledge has greatly reduced my frustration with sewing. (Who knew that the wrong needle could cause so many problems! Not my 8 year old self, that's for sure.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Rag Rug Handbook: Revised Edition by Janet Meany et al
This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST for a rag rug weaver. It is the best book I've found yet that describes not only the art of weaving rag rugs but also tries to give an historical account of looms that were made.I used this book as a reference when I bought an used loom.Since the labeling was missing on the loom, the previous owner could not identify what kind of loom she was selling.I was able to not only identify the loom, but I knew from this book that the type of loom I bought was appropriate for rag rug weaving. If you want to learn rag rug weaving, this is the book to get!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginner to advanced!
Paula and Janet did well with this book. I am a novice rug weaver and found the directions to be easy to follow and the results pleasing. Definitely buy this book if you're looking for something on weaving rag rugs!

5-0 out of 5 stars The One Book A Weaver Should Own
I am definitely a novice weaver. This book spells everything out very clearly, from A to Z.Plus, short history of many of the manufacturers. The patterns included will take you from simple to challenging.I have other weaving books, but this one is the one I refer to the most.If you only buy one rag rug handbook, I recommend Janet Meany and Paula Pfaff'sbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Great Book
Do not miss your chance to add this book to your library. This second book by Pat Cross is fabulous.Very well done, factual and complete, great photographs - just a great book and one I am proud to own.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner
Here's another winner from fiber artist Pat Cross. This is a thorough how-to on Pat's specialty, which are primitive rugs in a wonderful neutral palate. You will never see a better example than the gorgeous rug on the cover. There are lots of tips with great examples and photos.A great addition to any fiber artist's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Primitive
Simply Primitive is another cogently written work by Pat Cross. The book will inspire and guide both the novice and the experienced artist of the primitive style. There are many original designs with patterns for you to create your own works of art.Pat tells you where she finds her inspiration and how she creates her designs. The book is beautifully illustrated with color pictures of the wools and the tools Pat uses, and encourages you to select what "works for you".I am a rug hooker and have selected 2 of her designs which will be winter projects for me ... Quilted Cats [the cover design from an antique quilt] and Cat Birds [this is done in 2 just colors ! with an amazingly effective border].Pat shares several Punchneedle designs, but I am intrigued most by the Needlefelting and suspect I'll be working with roving this winter as well. With her clear and detailed instructions, you can even punchneedle and/or needlefelt parts or the whole of her hooked rug designs. And, if you have not bought Purely Primitive ... buy both of these books; you're in for a treat. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
I've been wanting to make a braided throw rug for a long time and got this book to learn exactly how. I've had success with my project so far and in part I think it's because of the pointers you can pick up from reading this book. It's got good illustrations and clear instructions and is a real saver of time and effort. I'd recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic rag rug making, no costly, cumbersome, loom needed!
After admiring my mother in laws homemade rag rugs which she had purchased at a church bazaar, I sent away for a few books on the subject, certain that I would be making rag rugs in a few weeks.Unfortunately, there are several methods used to create rag rugs, and some are more complicated than others. The books which I purchased had instructions for buying or hand crafting huge wooden looms, in which to weave the rugs.I recalled my aunt making rag rugs years ago, and I never remember her having a loom in her home.I was fairly confused at this point.I put the books away on a shelf, to collect dust! Then, by chance, I spotted Clare and Juju's book in a local bookstore. After leafing through it, I realized that THIS was THE book on making rag rugs, by hand, using nothing more than a marker, burlap, a rug hook, and cloth strips! This was the method that I recalled my dear aunt using, it even features the same rugs that I had first admired at my mother in laws. If you want a simple method to follow, resulting in beautiful, sturdy, handmade rugs-THIS IS THE BOOK!By the way, I purchased this book from Amazon and their other books as well.Just beware when choosing rag rug instructional books, read carefully the method highlighted, and you won't be disappointed!Good Luck! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great How-To
I originally checked this book out of the local library (along with some others that were not so good). It has the best illustrated instructions and there are many other colorful photos and project examples. Now I'm putting it on my wish list. I'd like my own copy to be able to refer to!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This book is so excellent that I felt it was worthy of my time to review it.I am a beginning twiner.I'm so new to the craft in fact, that I didn't even know "twining" could refer to rug-making.Even so, the author lays out information on twining so effectively that it was very easy for me to pick up the craft.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tells exactly how to twine
I learned how to twine somewhere else, but I heard that this book had examples of how to make adjustable looms-that is the main reason why I bought the book. In the book it tells the basic way to twine and then some variations. It also tells about looms that can be made at home. It tells a little about what materials would be best to use for your rags. It has beautiful photographs of rugs twined by rag rug twiners in the USA. I didnot learn the basics of twiningfrom this book so I am not sure how helpful it would be for a beginner trying to learn strictly from the book. I would reccomend reading the whole book to get all the important hints before you start your rug.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to do and frugal!
I recently bought this book because as a sewer, I have so many scraps.I use a lot of them for quilts, but still have many not useable for that craft.I also have old clothes that aren't fit for charity. Not wanting to add more to the landfill I decided to try my hand at rug making. This book is very easy to understand and follow. My first rug was a great success and was quick and easy to make. The hardest part was relaying what I wanted for a loom to my husband!I would highly recommend this book to any one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent illos explain unusual techniques & designs
Twenty-two years after his famous "Techniqes of Rug Weaving", Collingwood produced a worthy sequel in this 1990 book, full of new ideas.Close-up photos of small samples, large detailed diagrams, andclearly-written text convey Collingwood's enthusiasm for his craft and leadthe weaver through the methods needed to achieve some truly stunningeffects, useful not just for rug weavers but for anyone interested inunusual handweaving methods. (Another book to seek is "SmallWebs", a Danish (?) book for users of small table looms who want tocreate things no machine could produce.) The author's suggestions foraltering and strengthening a loom struck me as sensible, especially sincethe loom I use was handmade by a musician friend from parts that werealmost entirely "found objects" -- it includes bean poles and apost from a fallen street sign.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to make works of art for your floors and walls
I love making my own decorations but I like to finish projects that look tasteful and as nice (or better) than anything I could buy. You can't go wrong with this book, whether you are just starting out or looking for a larger challenge. There are some easier projects as well as ones that are more difficult. You could spend years using this book and not run out of ideas. Plenty of full-color photos, step by step directions and techniques. Worth every penny you spend on this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone can paint a floorcloth using this book
Having made several floorcloths, I was encouraging my sister to try it.I bought this book not only because it offers easy to understand step by step directions, it also makes you realize that you don't have to be an artist to create a beautiful cloth. The author's ideas are so creative, yet simple enough that anyone reading this book will be motivated to give this project a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Floor Cloth Painted
I read this book from cover to cover. I am not a painter and have never attempted anything like this before. I wanted to be sure that I was getting all the information I needed to be prepared in painting my first floorcloth. This book is a must have for anyone that wants to start painting floorcloths. The information is very detailed with step by step instructions for many projects.I learned so much about the differences in canvas, paints, techniques, what different tools to have and what they can do. You must check out kathy coopers website. It's great. She has given me the confidence and the background information to enhance my skills as a crafter and artist.

A longtime teacher of carpentry with nearly 50 years of experience as a production framer, Larry Haun is considered to be one of the masters of his trade. His expertise in building accurately, efficiently, and safely makes him the perfect writer for this book on the fundamentals of carpentry. In straightforward prose, Haun shares his expert advice on a number of topics, including the basics of using hand and power tools, how to read plans and order building materials, how to understand and choose the proper grade of materials, and a rundown on the steps to building an entire house from the ground up. Haun's love of wood and woodworking comes through clearly in this well-illustrated, diagrammed, thoroughly indexed, and comprehensive guide to basic carpentry. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Carpentry book that I recommend owning first..
"Carpentry" by Larry Haun, is the Number 1 book that I recommend owning first when beginning carpenters, homeowners, and do-it-yourselfers ask me about learning different aspects of this trade. I also tell these folks that this book, in particular, is well written, easy to understand, and filled with high-quality color photographs and drawings, that help make clear what this Master Carpenter is teaching on the subject of basic carpentry.
5-0 out of 5 stars great tool for the beginning carpenter
this is an excellent primer on stick framing, covering everything from tools to layouts of floors, walls, ceilings and roofs. nothing about shingling, drywalling, plastering, etc. - just framing.that's the strength of this book, in the depth of its treatment of the subject.nicely illustrated, there are at least two or three photos or useful diagrams per page.the book's a big step up from your usual how-to, as the author ties in his own personal building experiences, in ways that illustrate the logic of methods and practices.
