5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must for sewers
If you want to produce shirts that do not look home-made, you really need this book in your library.I also have the video that goes with it and would highly recommensd that as well.He does make it look very easy! The special feet used, like the felling foot and the rolled hem foot, are not easy to use without practice! The author uses some great techniques that changed my sewing for the better. It's a fantastic book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for shirt makers
This book should be in your personal library if you create shirts and blouses. It gives a thorough discussion of sewing techniques, fabrics, and fit.

4-0 out of 5 stars For passionate shirtmakers
This is a great book for people who've wanted to pull apart a commercially made shirt to see how it's made and replicate it. The information is VERY detailed and the author is VERY passionate about shirtmaking andthe various techniques. This is a plus and a minus for the book - to get the best out of the book you really do need to READ the book; there are no quick fix solutions, just fabulous detail. So, if you're looking for a book offering quick, concise information this book is NOT for you. Butif you'repassionate about producing a professionally made garment and enjoy learning detailed techniques buy the book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good premise, but needed more
I was excited about this product since It wasn't just T-shirts. Some of the ideas were interesting, but several of them have been done before.
3-0 out of 5 stars skip it...there are better books out there...
I bought this book, as well as Generation T and Tease all together. This book is the worst of the three. Poor illustrations, no actual photos, poor directions-too much background on beginning sewing techniques, and the projects for the most part are just plain boring.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very cool sewing
I used a couple of ideas under the pants section. I hemmed my pants keeping the original hems. When the weather got warm, I opened the sides of my jeans to create godets. One day I saw this denim skirt with a vabriant redtriangular fabric in the front...well I took out my book (under SKIRTS) and created my own skirt with an old pair jeans.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginner's Guide
This book is a great way to learn about sewing! It has great info about different fabrics, how to properly fold and cut material, how to take measurements, how to read a pattern, how to make alterations... A great over-all guide! I bought it for a friend who is just a beginner, but even though I've been sewing for years I learned new things (or refreshed my memory) by browsing through it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it as a gift for someone but it made me come back to sewing
I bought this book as a gift for my cousin. She is younger than me and wanted to learn to sew.I got this book on recommendation from a couple of my girlfriends.I began to look through it before wrapping it. This book made things very easy.I have fell back in love with sewing again.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner.
This is a good book for a beginner if you have no previous sewing skills and would like to get a jump start on sewing. The best part is that it comes with 3 patterns and directions for sewing them. This is mostly what the book is about. There is a section at the front about tools and fabric and also the basic parts of the sewing machine, but most of the book is directions for using the patterns included.I guess that's what all beginners need to get right in there and start sewing something/anything to get your feet wet.I really liked this book and the patterns are cute, they include an envelope pillow cover,a tote bag and a skirt.Good book ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well written book but skimped on some sections
I bought this book primarily for its section on passementrie but found a wealth of information on beading, bobbin embroidery and braiding.I noticed though that one of the braid samples, the 3-strand with a chevron pattern did not have illustrated or written instructions, which was disappointing as the traditional 3-strand weave, that we know through girl's pig tails, was documented in the book.Another disappointment was that the passementrie section had no pictures. Granted, Ms. Conlon's goal was to allow the reader to create their own designs but an example for a finished piece would have been helpful. It is a technique that's very hard to find material on and I thought this book would have filled that gap to an extent.Rouleau faggotting was a surprise treat and seems easy to recreate. The overall quality of the book is what I'd expect from Taunton press and worth buying.I just wish there was more 'eye candy'.This book could have easily been 200+ pages without tiring the reader with its lovely examples and well written instructions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous clothes are but a needle and thread away...
and possibly some good trim and beads or pretty buttons. This book is very good, illustrating all techniques with very nice drawings, and showing potential projects for different clothes, also with drawings and some photographs. The book is very comprehensive, covering pretty much anything you would want to do with your clothing.Directions are extremely clear, and she includes material lists, tips, and important things to know (especially if you are a beginning sewer) in separate colored boxes within the text.I found this book quite useful, but I think it might overwhelm someone who didn't have at least a little experience with sewing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
Exactly what I was looking for.Excellent reference although not really for first time sewers.Gives good detail with pictures.Would have liked to see more styles discussed but there is enough detail to use for any dress style.Definitely an asset to anyone making gowns.Construction detail is very specific.Lots of tips and guides to get that perfect fit. For evening/wedding gowns - a must have book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Betcha can't make just one!
I have made fabric wrapped baskets and sewn them by hand, like rug braiding, in the past but doing them on the machine is awesome. My first one was the oval basket using 2 fat quarters. The bottom is red and stitched in black and the upper area and handles are green, to mimic watermelon. From the left over green I made two mug coasters.I bought a box of tea and placed that in the basket with the coasters and included 2 mugs and gave the whole thing as a gift. The recipient loved them and the basket sits on the counter with her tea bags at the ready. Now I know what to do with all those odd "why did I buy that fat quarter" and any outdated fabrics. What a great way to use up old stash. This is fast becoming my favorite book.I am making the large purse now and want to attempt the covered baskets next. They sure are addicting!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Craft for the Craft Imparied
I don't ordinarily do crafts, but I was intrigued by the beauty of the finished projects and also the fact that this is a craft that is not just using a pattern created by someone else, but it shows one how to add one's own individuality to each project. The book is well written with easy to follow instructions.I would recommend it if you're looking for a way to create something that relects you. These bowls and baskets, and purses would make cherished gifts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely illustrated and clearly written
I find that the pictures in this book are very good and informative. The text is clear and covers basic definitions and techniques. I searched for several books on the topic and after purchasing this one I think it's the only one I will ever need.

2-0 out of 5 stars Quick and concise, but incomplete
A book is good or bad depending on your expectations. This book concentrates mostly on how to do the covers of the sofas and seats, but it is incomplete in providing information about frames, springs and so on.Modern upholstery techniques are barely covered.I'm sorry to disagree with the rest of the reviewers, but I think that you need to know the other side of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent
This is a good book. I would advise anyone looking for a good book on Upholstery to try this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst purse making book ever
I don't know who the folks are who've posted the lavish comments about this book, but at the risk of being witchy I have to wonder if they actually used the patterns and instructions in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bags With Style and Then Some
I purchased both "Bags With Style" and "Bags and Accessories With Style". I just have to say that the titles are an understatement. They should have been entitled "Bags of Elegance and Sumptuous Opulence", or something along those lines.I knew just by looking at the covers of these books that Ms. Kimura was an incredibly talentedwoman. However, I did not expect to find each and every page exploding with such gorgeous and innovative pieces.I found myself reading (and re-reading) each book cover to cover.I then proceeded to methodically go through the resource list in the back of each book, while online, to determine just what I needed to get to work, creating my own "bags with style"!I look forward to future publications by Ms. Kimura with great anticipation.Thank you Stephanie for sharing your creativity and extensive knowledge!I'll never look at a purse the same way again.

5-0 out of 5 stars from SherriAllen.com
Including the words "the ultimate" in the title of any book is pretty risky. After all, you're creating some pretty high expectations before the reader even turns the first page. With The Ultimate Sewing Book: Over 200 Sewing Ideas for You and Your Home, author Maggi McCormick Gordon stepped up to welcome the challenge and hit a grand slam home-run. Filled with step-by-step instructions and beautiful full-color photographs, this book certainly lives up to its name.
5-0 out of 5 stars Huge amount and very usefulinformation in one book.
I like this sewing book for it's detaild, well illustrated instructions. There are many techniques and they are devided into two halfs: home decor and clothes construction. At the first chapter you'll find the basics: tools and equipments, about the sewing machine (it could be enough explanation for some but I've seen better ones before). However, She writes about many kind of fabrics throuout the book and explains a lot about them! The photos are great too! There are a huge amount of information, how to-s for different kind of techniques packed in this book. For instance hand and machine stitches, seams, how to clip curves, pinning and cutting, marking patterns, alterations, interfacings, tucks and pleats, different sleeve costructions, collars, waistbands, pockets, linings, curtains, blinds, tiebacks, sheets, duvet cover, tabelcloths, slipcovers and many many more + a lot's of details (embellishments, corners, edges, even discussing different styles)!I'd deffinately recommend this book for a sewer who has a little bit of knowledge (knows how to sew a straight stitch or thread a machine). I think this book can be a bit overwhelming for a total novice - but maybe not every novice :) If it is more important for you to learn from a really step-by step book where every single move and detail are explaind and photographed carefully and everything has to be very very clear, then - I think this book could be confusing! (I'd recommend then the "Sewing 101, a beginner's guide to sewing") Otherwise this is a great book, also very good quality (not going to fall apart anytime soon)..if you looking for an answer more than likely you'llfind it in this book since it contains such a wide range of info!

5-0 out of 5 stars A colorful photo filled sewing book...even for the beginner
The Ultimate Sewing book is filled with numerous colorful step by step sewing instructions and photos. It shows you how to make clothing to home furnishings -- from hems and pockets to curtains and duvet covers. I am a novice sewer and I found the photos in this book very helpful. The photos are colorful and bright -- not just drawings like you see in many books. This book also gives examples of sewing basics. It shows you basic and advanced stitches, how to use paper patterns, edges and many much more. This is a thick book that is great if you need a visual guide to get you sewing. ... Editorial Review

Sewing garments and home-decor items does not have to be mutually exclusive; there are certain skills and fields of knowledge peculiar to each, and there are some areas of overlap. Remarkably, this extremely comprehensive, heavily illustrated volume manages to do justice to both apparel and decor techniques, from the rudiments of the sewing machine and other essential equipment to an exploration of fabric types, from taking proper measurements (of people as well as of windows and tables) to learning all the basics as well as more advanced skills for many kinds of sewing: women's wear, including tailoring; activewear, including swimsuits; babies' and children's clothes; window treatments, pillows, bed coverings, and table linens. The section on making custom alterations to store-bought patterns is especially helpful for garment sewers perpetually frustrated in trying to achieve a perfect fit. Novices will find this a very useful reference in understanding the often-cryptic instructions of commercial patterns; experienced sewers should have this guide on hand to help them achieve thoroughly professional results. 5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise instructions
This is a great reference bookwhether you are a novice or experienced sewer. This book is actually a compilation of other more specific Singer Reference Library books. You can get professional results with simple techniques. It includes techniques for both, serger and conventional sewing machine. It is designed specifically for Singer equipment. You would have to adapt some of the information if you own a sewing machine of a different brand.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
I bought this book with the idea that I could actually learn to sew by reading it.Not so. The book is a fine reference book with great pictures, but it is not for those of us whose greatest sewing accomplishments to date is figuring out how to turn the sewing machine on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for the Money
I am a sewing teacher for adults. This is the book I recommend to my students as an adjunct to the class. The photos are excellent and nearly everything is included. Several of the reviews said you can't learn to sew from the book. Learning to sew or expanding your knowledge of sewing demands guidance from an instructor or other experienced person plus good printed references, too. To me, this is the best all around basic book in print today. It can always be supplemented with specialty texts and fliers available at fabric shops. Of course, if you already own the Singer specialty books this one will be a repeat and not as good for your needs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource for Construction & Inspiration
At 1 square to the inch, these grid patterns make up to size almost efforlessly.I would do patterns for 30 minute intervals and would have completed a whole dress pattern within three days, including seam allowance. It is important to add up to 1" seam allowances, and cut out a muslin to fit before attempting it in the fashion fabric. This book is absolutely priceless, and for the amount of gorgeous patterns you recieve, is worth every pretty penny.I reccomend at least an intermediate sewer and a knowledge of pattern construction and patternmaking if attempting these patterns since the directions are a bit hazy and you have to do some creative problem solving to get the patterns to go together the way illustrated.I wish she had published more! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource to have as a sewer!
When you find an article of clothing which fits just right, who wouldn't love to be able to replace it when worn or even duplicate it?This gives you the tools to reproduce those items, generally without requiring that you deconstruct the item first, so that your original remains intact and wearable.I have previously had to take apart an item to make a pattern from it, or "guesstimate" and trace around it, adding on for seam allowances and such. The latter method proved faulty and left me with mismatched seams and other problems.I borrowed this book from the library first to get a feel for it, and decided it would be such a valuable resource in my sewing library that purchased a copy of my own.I look forward to utilizing these methods with future projects.Recommend!

3-0 out of 5 stars Knock offs
This book gives you step by step illustrations of how to reconstruct your favorite fitting garment into paper patterns. It also details all the tools you will need to make a knock off pattern (including what to place the garment on).The reason I gave this book 3 stars, because I was expecting a little more, but for the price $5.95...it was worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make your own Patterns
Wow!This is a terrific book. The instructions are clear and concise. The photos are great and show you step-by-step what to do.If you have clothes that you absolutely love and want to reproduce, this book is a great aide. You get to recreate clothes that you know are going to fit you well. There is some work involved but the results are worth it (most of us spend time altering patterns anyways, which is also time consuming).Once you have recreated a pattern from a garment that you love, you already know that the end result is going to be an outfit that you love to wear and that fits you well.Buy this book! It's well worth the money! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best book that's been done about contemporary shibori
Shibori is the Japanese word for resist-dyeing. There are three shibori techniques: tie-dye (those Sixties hallucinoform tee-shirts); clamp-resist (being pressed between two boards or tied tightly around a pole), and wax-resist (batik). It is an extremely old technique, perhaps the first to impose upon cloth a pattern that wasn't woven there. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Serger Answer Guide
My wife was a first time user of a serger that I bought her for Christmas (I know - great Christmas gift - but it was what she wanted!) - anyways, she tells me that this book is very helpful for providing a lot of useful hints past the basic instructions you get with a new serger - she would recommend it for anyone who usually needs just a little more hints tht a basic instruction guide provides

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
If you are new to serging or even experienced, you will find this book a valuable asset in your sewing library.I am new to serging and have found it to be a very helpful. Most owner/instruction manuals tell you how to thread and use your machine but don't get into a lot of detail about the actual how-to of serging or problem-solving.This book covers everything from needles to sewing with various types of threads to troubleshooting with lots of illustrations and photographs.
4-0 out of 5 stars great resources

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed -- designs not stylish
I was hoping this book would have cute sweatshirts like the ones I've see at craft shows selling for $40++. There isn't one pattern in this book that I would consider making or wearing.

I am really satisfied with the content in this book. I am also very pleased with the spiral binding. The information provided in this book is exactly what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down
After reading a couple other sewing books and getting nowhere in my quest to teach myself to sew, this book answered all the questions I had as a beginner.I literally couldn't put it down because suddenly all the sewing, fabric and pattern jargon that had been rolling around in my brain suddenly made sense.I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning reading it from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Earning what you truly deserved
I'm french speaking and I am leaving in Montreal. Few years ago I had read the business of sewing by Barbara Wright Sykes, and I realized that this would have been my purpose in life, to become a professional seamstress. However,I felt that I needed more technics to do so professionally. So at the age of fifty, I am back to school and I am studying design & patternmaking, I will be done in a few more months.I have a few little sewing contracts to help me survive in the meantime. These little contracts are in home decor, made to measure pants, skirts, etc. However, I have realised that I was not able to charge the right amount for my services, especially to my relatives and my earliest friends at work.I had trouble charging the amount that I truly deserved. In reading this book, it helped me to calculate the right amount I should receive for my work, as well as how to explain to the customer how this worked in the custom making clothes business. It helped me tremendously and I am recommanding this book to everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Pricing for Sewing For Profit!
I purchased Pricing Without Fear after reading The Business Of Sewing. This book is outstanding! It covered everything that I needed on pricing. I couldn't believe how complete and detailed the book is. I especially liked the examples and illustrations. That really helped me see how to calculate my prices. I couldn't believe how many price list were included in this book. It went into different types of pricing for all types of sewing. That was very surprising. Plus it even offered great inspiration for when things go wrong. I can't wait to read other books by Barbara Wright Sykes. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to start or already has a sewing business and is struggling with pricing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought
I was thinking this would be a step-by-step process of how to sew different fabrics. It doesn't read like a book, either, just a fabric description....very sterile and NOT for the novice sewer at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have for any sewing library
Wish I'd had this when I was learning. Straightforward and thorough, it will prevent new and experienced sewers alike from less-than-stellar results and hours of frustration when sewing with unfamiliar fabrics. Not the most comprehensive with specialty fabrics, but covers the broadest range and the most common textiles you'll use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Module Patterns
The patterns fit perfect to my grandson. I live in Argentina and I could not get so easy patterns in modules that allow you to create different garments. If you follow the explanations you will not have any problem in sewing because they are very clear.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great clothes for kids!
When my son was born, I was really frustrated by the lack of commercial patterns available for little boys. It's a wasteland; I had 800 choices of sundress but no comfortable, durable patterns that didn't involve daisy applique!
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for baby garment
I started sewing to make something for my coming baby, which means I was new to sewing. Yet I was able to prepare almost the complete wardrobe for my baby with this book.
