pleasantly surprised...
At first glance, I was not very impressed when flipping through this book.The bears seemed very plain and simple.However, upon closer inspection - I realized that it was only their expressions that were very basic; Each bear pattern was really very different in size and shape.A bear's expression is actually the part of the bear that allows the artist to make the bear uniquely "theirs". So armed with the bear patterns in this book, the creative possibilities are endless!The author has included a large variety of bear styles (jointed, non-jointed, 4 legged cub) and adorable clothes for all the bears.The patterns included in the book are all full size.There is a very thorough and well-pictured techniques section in the beginning of the book discussing different fabrics, joint materials, etc.This book is really a gem, and at the listed price - well worth the investment.

Good for starters
Angela Bullock's book was not up to standard for members of ourbear making club. The bear patterns are not well defined and this book, although it explains the basics of bear making, shows miniature, finished articles, that are not particulary well made. The bears in the book look as though they were made by first-time bear makers.Read more

Wonderful Resource Book
I have a double major in art and home economics and have collected and used books on doll and bear making for many years.I have had this book for several years and want to make a few remarks for those who are interested. If you are looking for a cutsie book with patterns to copy and make this book is probably not for you. This book appears to have a Polish or German origin and is very ethnic. This is one book that I continue to go back to over and over again just for the wonderful patterns and resource that it is.Originally published in 1954, it does appear a bit dated.Good reference material is timeless, for instance, recently I needed patterns for balls and this book provided me with ball patterns in four, six, and eight sections.So I did not have to do the calculus to figure this out, if I could do calculus!Patterns that can be reworked, every embroidery stitch that one can imagine, how to do beading on fabric,paper mache and simple dolls.Patterns for many, many different types of doll clothing and so on.For the price of this book used, how could one go wrong.

Not What I Expected...
However, having said that, it's okay.While I can understand the other reviewer's disappointment,to say that the designs are weird is unfair in my opinion.Apparently, that reviewer didn't "get it", so to speak.The toys in this book are very small and have an ethnic flair to them.Due to the elaborate needlework shown on the pictures, I would guess them to be from India, Asia, or Mexico if I were to see them in a shop.These toys are meant to be used as a decoration for your home, not as children's toys; hence, the title, "Decorative Stuffed Toys...etc.They have a folklore style which is very charming and allows for a tremendous amount of experimentation and diversity in how they are made and embellished.If you love doing hand embroidery and want to try your hand on 3-dimensional objects, then this is your book.The author encourages the use of different fabrics and embellishments and hopes you will think "outside of the box" when choosing your materials and embellishments.All in all, it is a very good book for the avid needleworker who would like to try something different.

Not worth my time or money
There wasn't a picture of the cover and of course no way to see what was inside the book.I do not like this book at all. All the pictures are black and white and most seem to be drawn by hand. What I think of this book
I read this book thinking that starting making rag dolls would be hard. But I was pleasantly surprised when I made one and it turned out well. I have now made two ragdolls and their wardrobe is ever increasing with ideas from the book. It has also prompted me to design my own things for them and I can't wait for the next book to become available on amazon. ... Read more

Who am I?
If a bear wanted to find out his/her family history, this would be the encyclopedia to buy. Being a teddy bear is still very in vogue. This is a fascinating way to find out why we love teddy bears and why they appeal to collectors all over the world. All Bears DON'T Look Alike!!
This is a great "beginner" book to learn about the points that distinguish one bear from another.Somehow they all seem to look alike at first!!Read more
