5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
This book is both inspiring and practical. Many, many wonderful pictures to look at for inspiration and patterns for creating your own!I have already dog eared my pages!!

5-0 out of 5 stars SO WORTH IT
Beautiful examples, innovative approaches and inspiring photos. Get it, you won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know about paperdoll history & creation
I waited eagerly for this book to be published, as I have been fascinated with the art paperdoll phenomenon on eBay and elsewhere (Claudine Hellmuth's "poppets," for example). This book has more than satisfied my hopes. The author, Terry Taylor, has organized the book in an unusual way, mixing three main elements throughout - the history of paper dolls, fabulous art dolls made by himself and other artists, and projects one can do oneself at any skill level.Instead of plowing through the obligatory history chapters before getting to the inspirational part, the book slides a brief but solid history of paper dolls in with the contemporary art and the project ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable Craft Book
I just received this book as a gift after wanting it for quite a while. The wee little folk are not difficult to make and the directions are very clear. The pages are very inspirational and have simple little details that add to their charm.Wait until you see the pirate with the skull embroidered on his pirate hat... and the darling flower fairies.. It is all so wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wee People
This book is great because it offers a craft project that most anyone can do.(Some of the dolls are so small that they are not appropriate for very young children, under age 3) The directions are clear. There is a list of mail order suppliers if you can not find the materials. The pictures are beautiful, the dolls are cute as a button, and there is a lot of room to create your own without exactly copying what she has done.I can not say enough buy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Become a Doll-making Queen!
Making Wee Felt Folk is really as easy as the book claims. All you need is the right materials, and if you know where to go, the right materials won't cost half as much as they could. Just know that when you begin, your dolls won't look as good as you might want until you've practiced, practiced, practiced.

While I am a more realistic designer I did apprecaite her tips and inspiration. If you ,like me are into realism susanna Oroyans books are the best.! But if you are also a sculptor get the creating life like figures and animals two books that are so invaluable,I wouldn't sell my copies for a million dollars.Katherine Dewey is an artist without comparison.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fun Creative Buy it
I love this book, it is a book for the truly creative. If you need inspiration and skills, this book is for you.The book starts off with the specific formula to use in placing features on a doll face and offers some patterns to make dolls. From there it is allabout the artist in you. There is a large gallery of ideas (the entire doll, not just the face) and they are fresh, colorful, unusual and even wild. The book reviews using varied materials and methods including paints, watercolor pencils, sculpting and stiches.I have all three books in this series and they are all great!

5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional instructional book
A thorough guide to paper engineering of pop-up books. Careful instructions and illustrated examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This book has beautiful examples and wonderful instructionsIt gave me the confidence to copy and create.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Instructions!
There are dozens and dozens of pictures showing what you could make with paper, pencil, and exacto knife, but the instructions were minimal and only for the simple projects. Beautiful examples are shown throughout the book, but no instructions on how to make them. Having patterns for the more intricate projects would definitely help out. It's an okay book to learn the basic, but lacking for advanced designs.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT scaled for 18" dolls
How disappointing!I bought this book for my daughter's 9th Birthday. Her dad is going to make her American Girl dolls some furniture & I thought this would be the perfect guide. WRONG!The armoire is only 6" deep. The American Girl clothes hangers are 6 1/4" wide.Tell me, how is that going to work? The doors won't even be able to close!Thankfully my hubby is a skilled woodworker & can expand the dimensions, but if he is going to have to come up with his own pattern this book would have best been left on the shelf. We are very disappointed. My brother-in-law is making the picnic table & my niece told me that they were surprised & how small it is looking.Seems like more than one project is not quite up to the 18" par.Think twice before buying this one or at least find one to look at in person before hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I really loved this book.My girls wanted furniture for their dolls, but Pleasant Company Products were out of my budget.Using this book, my daughters and I were able to create the simple pieces.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Buy for Beginning Builders
Depending on what your interests are, this can be a valuable addition to your library. It is not for collectors, in my opinion, and most of the examples are on the "folk art" side: crude, kitschy, and sometimes even made of junk. There are profiles of a few builders who make complex automata demonstrating fine craftsmanship, such as the wonderful Keith Newstead and John Grayson. I would have preferred to have some detailed explanations of how some of their automata work, though. The REAL strength of this book is if you are beginning to make your own automata and would like to have a "kit" to experiment with. The book contains full sized plans for an experimenter's "kit" which is really nice. I have Robert Addam's "How to Design and Make Automata" and CMT's book, but they both only have crude drawings with no dimensions. I made photocopies of the parts and then used Xylene to transfer directly onto plywood and cut the parts out on a scroll saw, saving a great deal of time and giving me a nice litte platform for experimenting. This alone makes the book a must have for the beginning builder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! Great color pictures and diagrams
This has got to be one of the best books on the subject of automata and mechanical theatre. There are lots of great color pictures and diagrams to build your own automata. Worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars TO BE HONEST Creative Cloth Doll Couture
To be absolutely honest..When I first received Creative Cloth Doll Couture
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures and Ideas
This book begins with directions to make the doll. This is good, because you are not forced to buy a separate book for this. Most importantly this is a book for the truly creative, for those who want something different. If you need inspiration and ideas, this book is for you, there are a few galleris of examples throughout the book. The cloths range from all the pieces of a skirt suit (including lingerie and shoes) to 60's bell bottoms to fairy-ware.They are colorful, unusual and some are high fashion evening ware. The pictures are great and the instructions seem clear (I have not made any of the clothes yet.Unfortunately there are more gallery pictures than patterns, that is my only complaint. There is engough of the basic theory to help you design some simple clothes on your own.I have all three books in this series and they are all very good! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars knitting for animal lovers!
I'm a knitting veterinarian, and I got this book to make a couple of toys for my young kids - but my boss saw me working on a pig, and asked me to make some animals for the office. I told him I'd get to it after I finish the ones for my kids. Well. So far the kids have had me make each one a pig (I have 3 kids, so that's 3 pigs), and two ducks, and I'm working on a sheep. This is a great book. I consider myself a beginning knitter with advanced beginner to early intermediate skill. I have knitted one sweater in my life, and it was for a 2 yr old. I have made one small baby blanket, and several scarves, and that is about it. Oh, and one small 2 yr old sized jumper-dress. So, you know, I'm no Nancy Needles! But the patterns are pretty well written and easy to do, nothing fancy. If I can do it, so can you. The one thing I wish is that the number of rows always added up the way the author says they should (you know: work 2 rows, then work 8 more for a total of 10, then work 3 more for a total of 12, wait, um, no...) but it really doesn't matter, because it is always clear if you need to be knitting or purling, and what's one row extra if you're making a sheep anyway??

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely wonderful
this little book is a goldmine for knitters. the patterns are straightforward and extremely easy to follow and do not require even the most elementary knitter to think twice. the book is full of wonderful toys that any child - or silly adult! - would be happy to have. I've knitted a few of the toys and I already know that this book will be a treasure I'll hold onto my entire life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book proves beautiful patterns don't have to be difficult!
I love this book. There is so much variety. Trust me, this book will not end up sitting in the bookshelf and forgotten. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Would give it a 10
For any of you who believe that dolls are just children's toys or cutesy collector's items, you have obviously not seen this book.Oroyan's Designing the Doll: from Concept to Construction, is a very impressive book. While it is as advertised, a book on making dolls, it is first and foremost an art book.Throughout the book, the author is addressing the student as artist. She covers issues such as color, texture, drawing, abstract and impressionism, scale, etc.The details of construction are included as are some patterns, but the greatest value of the book is actually in the illustrations of finished dolls, some by the author and some by others. These are exceptional works of art. Some are actual portrait works, capturing in miniature the personalities of those portrayed.Others, while they may have had human models, are designed to capture an essence or spirit, an impression or meaningful event. When one sees dolls such as these, one understands instantly why a person would collect them:they are Michelangelos in miniature.

5-0 out of 5 stars an enchanting book for all ages!
I purchased this book for2 precious princesses of mine that love their Barbie dolls.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is full of great patterns for Barbie. It also really made me laugh. I am not a Barbie collector or enthusiest. I just got it to knit my daughter some pretty Barbie clothes. Each outfit has a description for it as if it were a very exspensive designer piece being bought out of a catalog. I read the whole book as a work of fiction and as a good pattern book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knit versus crochet.
I prefer the Crochet For Barbie book. Keep mindful that Barbie bodies thru the years do require slight attire fit-adjustments.Still, pattern errors in this Knit book caused me to wonder if Nicky's book success (she is Barbie's authorized needlecraft fashion maker) caused publr/mfr to seek quick profits without testing their knit-to-crochet pattern translation software. Admittedly, the fashions are all great and it is nice to finish a chic project in an eye-blink. Needlecrafters will appreciate Crochet/Knit For Barbie books patterns working up pro-style, also quickly teaching beginners cro-knit skills for human attire and accys. Experienced needlecrafters' detail modifications can result in gorgeous outfit variations. Learning your yarn-usage with their common needle sizes makes catching errors nearly automatic (mine is .5"/k and .25"/sc for sport yarn and cotton no. 5 respectively). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Misses the mark in several categories
Although the Blue Book is the avid doll collectors' favorite price guide, it contains numerous categories that have not been updated for quite a number of years.China, parian, papier mache, and wooden, some of the earliest dolls in existence, have been gaining in popularity for several years now and the market prices, both at auction and online have been rising considerably. The Blue Book has not caught up with this trend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
Heavily illustrated with excellent diagrams and color photos, this book is not only for anyone learning the art of art-doll making but will also appeal to anyone who enjoys seeing what the creative, human imagination can devise. Just a joy to read from cover to cover and the beautiful photos will provide inspiration for many different types of artist. 5-0 out of 5 stars Susan Oroyan has done it again!
Susan Oroyan has done an excellent work. I bought both of her books "Designing the Doll" and "Finishing the Figure" If you own one of the books, you have to own the other one, they go together. The books have a great deal of information and details on doll making. The book is good for beginners or professional doll makers. You will love it.

Born in 1895 in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, Madame Beatrice Alexander was the daughter of Russian immigrants who rose to become America's premier doll maker. As a child she was known as Bertha, but soon took what she considered to be a more socially acceptable name - Beatrice. This name change was but a harbinger of her determination to excel, to rise above what she considered to be humble surroundings.5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BOOK!
BEAUTIFUL BOOK!WONDERFUL PICTURES!IT WAS GREAT HOW MANY SCARLETT O'HARA DOLLS THERE WERE!BUT THIS BOOK COSTS TOO MUCH, IT SHOULD COME IN PAPERBACK!

5-0 out of 5 stars The historical perspective is a real plus.
The photos of Lia Sargent's dolls in this book are, indeed, beautiful, but the real draw is the way Ms. Finnegan, the author of the book, relates Alexander's life to what was going on in the world at the same time.Wonderful historical perspective, which is very unusual in a doll book! ... there is no other book that gives so much information on bed dolls called boudoir dolls. This is like a "bible" for doll collectors. You do not need another book if you have this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with ideas crafts and collectors alike will appreciat
In Dolls Of The Art Deco Era, dollmaker Oroyan provides a survey of the history, makers and collectible items of the art deco era, providing both a step-by-step set of instructions for reproducing the style of doll popular in the era and covering the history of dollmaking during the era, and restoration techniques after. Packed with ideas crafts and collectors alike will appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, inspiring: Another Winner by Susanna Oroyan
For those of us who admire, collect, make and renovate 1920s and 20s-inspired art dolls, Susanna Oroyan has written a thoughtful volume focusing on boudoir dolls from the Art Deco period. Although the topic is covered better visually in another of my favorites, "The Magic and Romance of Art Dolls" by Stephanie Farago, the strength of this book is in Oroyan's excellent research, writing and wonderful storytelling ability. Her fresh and fun-loving writing style shines in this book (the illustrative drawings also are quite good.)Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures, but...
This beautiful hard-cover makes a very nice coffee table book, but I don't recommend it for someone looking to do any in-depth doll research. The pictures are lovely, but details are scant. In most cases, the doll's height measurements, characteristics, year of production, etc., are noteven listed. She also throws in quite a few new artist dolls and 70'sfashion dolls which don't seem to fit in with the rest of the book and areof little interest to vintage doll collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
This is a really great book on how to mkae simple, and some not so simple toys for children. Most of them are just beautiful as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall....pretty good
This book gives good ideas for toys to make at home and gives some good description of children's play at different stages. The main problem I have is that I have never carved wood and there are no directions on how to actually carve.I would like to make some of the wooden toys, but I will need to do more research beyond this book to actually be able to carve the wooden toys. So, I guess I'm saying, if you have a base knowledge in sewing and carving, this book is very good....if not, you will need to do some other research in addition to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Directions for Waldorf-style toys and more...
This book is a revised and expanded edition of the original book titled "Making Soft Toys" which was published in 1981. The author is a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher. This book discusses the importance of play as seen through a Waldorf education perspective and explains that natural playthings from nature and toys made from natural products are important. The book opens with several essays on the subject of the value of play and the nature of (appropriate) play as seen through the eyes of a Waldorf educator. Simple toys that allow imaginative and creative play are defined as ideal and appropriate for the proper development of the child. The author states that toys made by hand are more appreciated by children and she urges parents to make toys by hand, with the child's help or the child watching. A listing of toys appropriate for different age groups is listed. Discussion about outdoor play, play with dolls, and clean up time is included. Full instructions for over 45 toys are provided. Toys include dolls and doll clothing, knitted animals, wooden playstands and cloths, wooden tree blocks, and carved wooden toys (bridges, animals, spoons, etc.). Using wool roving is explained and instructions for creating pictures with plant-dyed wool end the book. The book is 93 pages long and the instructions are detailed and illustrated with line drawings. If you enjoy crafts and want to make Waldorf-style toys, this book is a must and a good value. Of course you can buy many of these toys already made, but you would save a lot of money by making these yourself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures
I thought that the book had spectacular pictures of dolls, but I found the instructions on how to make the same dolls a bit lacking. It's a great idea book and inspiration book, but I would have liked more step by step instructions. There were some patterns andillustrations of how to do faces and the like, but there was a lot more reading to do than I would like in an instructional book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Reference and Inspiration Book
This book is my bible when I get stuck on how make some part of a doll. The author gives very clear diagrams on many different construction techniques. It's NOT a pattern book or a how-to manual. It's a reference book, meant to give you guidance as you pursue making your own dolls.I love looking at the pictures and find them very inspirational but these are art dolls and like any art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
