1-0 out of 5 stars NOT scaled for 18" dolls
How disappointing!I bought this book for my daughter's 9th Birthday. Her dad is going to make her American Girl dolls some furniture & I thought this would be the perfect guide. WRONG!The armoire is only 6" deep. The American Girl clothes hangers are 6 1/4" wide.Tell me, how is that going to work? The doors won't even be able to close!Thankfully my hubby is a skilled woodworker & can expand the dimensions, but if he is going to have to come up with his own pattern this book would have best been left on the shelf. We are very disappointed. My brother-in-law is making the picnic table & my niece told me that they were surprised & how small it is looking.Seems like more than one project is not quite up to the 18" par.Think twice before buying this one or at least find one to look at in person before hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I really loved this book.My girls wanted furniture for their dolls, but Pleasant Company Products were out of my budget.Using this book, my daughters and I were able to create the simple pieces.
4-0 out of 5 stars good book but----
This is not a book for beginning wood workers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classy designs; safety first.
I used this book to make a little dump truck, a jet plane, and a tugboat, soon to be given to my grandson.I did not find the fact that not all plans were full-sized a problemThis is common and the %enlargement (if needed) is givenThe instructions were clear. (However, if you are making the little truck, check the width of 2" hinges available before gluing down the hinge block!)The designs are classic, and range from simple (the ones I made) to complex (the truck on the cover is said to take 40 hours.)There are a couple of educational toys included.3-0 out of 5 stars Great toys - not the best plans
The book provides scale drawings of several projects. But in order to use them you first have to photocopy the plans at the appropriate (and provided) zoom level. This was difficult, especially since the paper sizeneeded to be larger than standard copier sizes. In order to save pages, itseemed as if many steps were eliminated from the cutting and assemblyinstructions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tells you how to make them!
I haven't actually made a whirligig yet, but I plan on it.Since I read this book I really believe I can. What I wanted to know, it told me, mainly things you can use to make the mechanical components of a whirligig.I've done woodworking and that part I knew I could do but putting it all together was another matter. This book definitely helped me see how it can be done.

2-0 out of 5 stars making animated whirligigs

5-0 out of 5 stars ...
This is the best of Lunde's series. He is the man who resurrected the whirligig from the ashheap of historical American culture. In the 1970's, Lunde first investigated old whirligigs in New England, researched in the Library of Congress, and just plain hit the woodworking bench to figure out what makes a good whirligig work. Others have tried to copy him, but his whirligigs spin and turn and twist with a freedom and naturalness few can match. His political whirligig creations are snapped up immediately these days, because at 86 years old, there is no telling when he will stop. Simple, straightforward, and detailed, these designs and instructions will put you in the drivers seat for making any design you desire. He is a specialist in devising creative designs, not of the art crowd kind that look great but don't work, but the kind that really move in ways pleasing to all. He is the master of this genre. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough with step by step instruction
I echo what the other reviewers have already said. Excellent intro to wood toy making provided you have or can get access to tools.Good step by step instructions. This book is a good way to develop your woodworking skills without being overwhelmed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very clear!
This book contains 10 ideas for games which seem to be what every child would enjoy. The problem is that most of the figures used in the book to give construction details leave a lot to be desired. Most of the photos are black and white and difficult to see any detail. The drawings are also in black and white and are also very difficault to follow.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK for ideas, but not for projects
I was disappointed as well. I expected projects I could build, but nothingstruck me as worth the time. The basic ideas are OK, marble rollers, and soon. But I would only use this stuff as a departure point for my owndesigns.

1-0 out of 5 stars Making Marble-Action Games, Gadgets, Mazes & Contraptions
This book was a terrible disappointment. I wanted to give it no stars but that didn't seem to be an option. For most of these gadgets he begins the chapter by explaining that they don't actually work very well, they tend tojam and clog up requiring a certain amount of tilting and tapping to clearthe device. Many of the mazes and such are non-functional - they are thereto make the contraption look complicated. It's clear to me from looking atit that the dice substitute will never generate a 1, 2, or 6, and the thingis definitely not uniform like dice would be. The spirit of Rube Goldbergis represented by contraptions that do a lot but accomplish very little. The mechanisms in this book just don't do anything. I didn't find a singlesatisfying project in here and felt like it was a waste of twenty bucks. And what are metric conversion tables doing in here? An embarrassment ifyou ask me. If you like this kind of stuff get Making Wooden MechanicalModels by Alan and Gill Bridgewater. It is far superior. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book filled with plans for small hands-on wooden machines

The machines are unique and really fun to watch work. A relatively high level of woodworking skill is required. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Small Workshop - Great Fun
Several really nice things about building the types of wooden toys outlined in this book arethat once you have the necessary tools to do the job it is a relatively inexpensive hobby, it can be done within a fairly small work space so no large woodworking shop is needed, and there is enough variety in the projects to keep you interested and enthusiastic for a long while.4-0 out of 5 stars Great -- if you've got a woodworking shop!
The designs, plans and instructions in each of the sections of this book are great. I had no trouble at all in starting on several of the toys shown here. But beware to the craftsman who doesn't own a drill press! The author seems to assume that anyone building these toys will have a drill press, a belt sander, and other large floor-model power tools. Since I do everything with hand tools (plus a power sander), some of these designs became a lot trickier. I had to resurrect my old doweling tools to mount wheels, for example. Still a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Father in-law love it
I bought this book for my father in-law a year ago. He is a retired carpenter and I thought he would enjoy building some of those cute wooden toy vehicles. I was right he has build several of the toys and he really enjoyed building them. I enjoy taking them with me to the school where I teach, so the children can enjoy them too. My father in-law thinks this book is the GREATEST. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pattern Collection
Large collection of great patterns. A good way to get a lot of reward for a minimal amount of investment in terms of tools and materials. I have as much fun making them as the kids do playing with them. A decent range of patterns from simple shape/alphabet/number puzzles to more intricate circus scenes and map of USA, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book That Keeps On Giving
I bought this book so my husband could make christmas presents for our kids with his new scroll saw. I couldn't get him out of his shop. He found out what kind of wood to buy, how to use his new saw, and he made the coolest puzzles - much more original than anything I've seen in stores. The kids love their puzzles and play with them all day. I can't wait to see what else he creates from this book.

Patterns and projects?Give me a break!I think next year I'll write a book on how to build a rocking horse. If I use the format presented here, all I need to do is suggest that you buy some wood.I'll provide the measures and of you go.Good luck.4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book for creating toys with your scroll saw. There are easy and hard projects and a few in between. This book is well written and laid out well.I would like more photos of completed projects though, this book only gives you diagrams and instructions.Without completed project photos I only gave this book 4 stars. It is the best book I have seen for scroll saw toys.I've already made several toys out of this book and I've really enjoyed having something to create with my scroll saw.I highly recommend this book for anyone with a scroll saw.
