4-0 out of 5 stars Most complete guide I've seen
Tons of photos, very good step by step instructions.Great for the begineer to intermediate DIY'er.4-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for the whole deck

I checked out many books from my library (which did not have this book). This book beats all other deck books I've seen for the following good points: * Awesome pictures & drawings:B&D accomplishes with a picture what others can only do with a drawing. * Great mix of design ideas with how-to detail for each design flare. * Very complete how-to teaching style with a level suitable for beginner to advanced. * Clear, consise writing style.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair to partly Cloudy??? Still GOOD BOOK!!
I notice this situation alot.. sometime in these books they like to advertise easy to follow simple to understand complete instructions.. well this book is better than most I've seen but it still lacks detail on some of the projects.. the truth is most who buy pocket hole jigs are those who have very little woodworking experience and need that extra help in details of the book and plan.. some of the projects in the book are nice and are good starters. the book also brings home the concepts of the pocket hole jig... this would be a great book for a beginner.. however if you already understand how to use a pocket hole jig.. shy away and buy something more challenging.. Danny Proux .. does a nice job with this Book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tips make this nifty tool even better!
I just love this book.I couldn't believe how easy it was to build one of these tables using Proulx's instructions and techniques. The Kreg jig is fabulous on it's own but these instructions make using it even easier.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Starting Out
I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend.I've advanced to the stage where I'm getting pretty good at making dowels on an expensive lathe, and was feeling like I needed to find something that made me feel more productive. If I've got it figured right, my first pen will cost me about $4,000.After that, hopefully, economy of scale should set in (I hope). If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm pretty good in a wood shop, but an absolute newbie at turning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great how to on making pens
64 pages, full color, 9 gallery pages.Step by step pictures with detailed text on how to make pens/pencils on the lathe. This book was a must for making my first pen, and a great reference as I have progressed. Pens include: Standard twist (and pencil), Dome-top, Rollerball andFountain, Cigar pen, Flat-top click pen, Flat-top twist pen, and desk pen.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding presentation of "How-to" for pen making.
A very clear and concise presentation of what is required for makingexcellent writing instuments. Great color photos of all materials andinstructions of each step in the selection of woods, and hardware, how todrill, match and assemble the components. The number of ways to varie theappearance of the instruments. He does not go into the discusion of lathes. He concentrates making pens and pencils and the variations that can becreated. I have his other book, "UNIQUE & UNUSUAL PENS from thewood lathe"and I refer to them quite ofen for new ideas. I alsorefer to "TURNING PENS AND DESK ACCESSORIES" by Mike Cripps whichI also use ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A top notch carving book
This is one of the best "how to" carving books I've come across in quite a long time. The projects are wonderful ( those cute, crooked little houses in cottonwood bark) and the authors have gone out of their way to make the directions clear and the photographs fit the explanations--or vice versa. There are even instructions for repairing blow outs, a not uncommon problem with bark carving cross grain.Woodcarver/Reviewer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classy designs; safety first.
I used this book to make a little dump truck, a jet plane, and a tugboat, soon to be given to my grandson.I did not find the fact that not all plans were full-sized a problemThis is common and the %enlargement (if needed) is givenThe instructions were clear. (However, if you are making the little truck, check the width of 2" hinges available before gluing down the hinge block!)The designs are classic, and range from simple (the ones I made) to complex (the truck on the cover is said to take 40 hours.)There are a couple of educational toys included.3-0 out of 5 stars Great toys - not the best plans
The book provides scale drawings of several projects. But in order to use them you first have to photocopy the plans at the appropriate (and provided) zoom level. This was difficult, especially since the paper sizeneeded to be larger than standard copier sizes. In order to save pages, itseemed as if many steps were eliminated from the cutting and assemblyinstructions.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the beginning builder
I used this book extensively along with my regular plans book when building my Cosine Wherry. The well done illustrations and explanations helped answer many a question on "how" or "why" do do a particular building task. A highly recommended book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book on strip building
I have just completed Mac McCarthy's Wee Lassie using this book. The amount of detail in the book answered all my questions and some of the techniques (like reinforcing the deck with thin marine plywood) was better than using carlins and stripping the deck onto the carlins. I had no trouble building the boat. I built the boat with no staples or nails. Her stapleless building technique was straight forward and easy to do. The most difficult part was beveling the inside stems. I would not bevel the entire stem at once, but bevel as I stripped. The only part of McCarthy's book worth having are the mold patterns for the canoes. This book is the one you need to actually build the canoe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Decorative Painter's Source Book
Florence de Dampierre's The Best of Painted Furniture is a "must have" source book for any decorative paint artist. It is filled with gorgeous photographs of exquisite furniture displayed both alone or "in situ".Each chapter focuses on a different region of Europe, as well as America, with an emphasis on the changing of painting styles from a fascinating historical perspective. It is an inspirational idea book, and is invaluable when trying to capturethe feel of a certain era.Famous decorative paint artists from each coutry are discussed and featured, and the evolution of certain styles of painting, for instance chinoiserie, are examined. It is a painstakingly researched book, and the ideas from the past four centuries unfold in a unique and creative way.The author shows how the painted furniture styles of past centuries blend into modern settings, and also examines painted metal and papier-mache furniture, as well as the care of painted furniture, in general.Creative inspiration and practical advice and a healthy serving of decorative painting history gives this book 5 stars, in my opinion.Enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed & Absolutely Useful!
I have been a pyrographer for over 6 years now, & am so delighted to have found this book! The techniques are well explained, the photos are detailed, the instructions go from an easy project to difficult, all taught beautifully. Complete is a very accurate description of this artists offerings.

5-0 out of 5 stars IF NOT THE BEST BOOK ON THIS SUBECT ON THE MARKET, THEN IT'S CLOSE!
I really cannot recommend this one highly enough.I have been involed in this art form for well over thirty years now and this is by far one of the best works on the subject.I did find, after reading it, that you can indeed "teach a old dog new tricks!"For the beginner, I do not feel you could find a better guide on the market. For the "old hand" this work is just crammed with good ideas to get the creative juices flowing.I have collected books of this type for a long time now and have qutie a collection, some good, some bad and some great. This one falls in the last category mentioned. You will want to purchase this one if you are like me, as you will be continually referring to it.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for "oldtimers" and beginners too
As a professional turner with 52 years experience, I find much in thisbook that I like. Many of Mike's methods I have used and, many I have not.Now that I'm retiring, I shall turn for fun with the help of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turning tricks
This is a wonderful book. It won't teach you how to use a skew or how to turn an ordinary bowl. It starts where that kind of book leaves off. You will find thirteen ways to turn an accurate ball, eight ways to drill or bore holes on a lathe, three machines that can turn ellipses and umpteenways to steady slender or unbalanced turnings. The first chapter dealscomprehensively with chucks from the time that Noah turned the handles ofthe ark - and it transpires that the 'modern' scroll chuck was in use morethan a century ago. There are chapters on turning rings of al kinds, turning objects on multiple axes, eccentric turning and therming (go lookthat one up).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning From A Perfectionist
James Krenov is one of woodworking's treasures - an acknowledged master craftsman who is open about both his aesthetics and his techniques. For many of us he is a role model who started out on a shoe string in Sweden and has gone on to create a whole style all his own.He is as devoted to teaching as he is to his work and has a gift for inspiration and straightforward exposition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for every woodworker
I love all of Krenov's books. It's easy to find better books on tools or techniques but nowhere will you find books that breathe a love for wood and craft more than Krenov's(Nakashima's "The Soul of a Tree" comes closest.) I've read through each of his books several times and always pick up on something new. "The Fine Art of Cabinet Making" is a bit more advanced than his earlier works in that he covers coopered doors and frame-and-panel work but his philosophy is always evident. Krevnov's love for wood is infectious. After reading his books you find yourself `playing' more with wood. Wondering how things will work if you move this one way and that another. Instead of churning out furniture I instead start to think about the piece I want to make: what wood would look nice? What kind of pulls will fit? How will it sound when the door closes? Somehow all of this combines to make the journey (the making) as nice as the end product. Frankly I think most furniture makers will go broke trying to work like this unless you have a whole lot of cash behind you or can charge very expensively for your work. I really think, though, that these books should be on every woodworker's shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book, but not a great one.
This book gave me a few problems.Let me start off that I find the work of Mr Krenov to be some of the finest in the world of cabinetmaking. The trick is that this book spent a lot of time going over material that has been done other places better. The sections on shop tools, sharpening and how to do dovetails did not add much to the book and has been covered better in many other books. The section that talked about handmade planes was an interesting read, and in my opinion could have been expanded to give much more. The high points of the book are the "Details of Cabinetmaking" section and anearlier section that goes over the aesthetics of wood grain in the context of design. This gets you into the head of Mr Krenov a bit.The problem is that it is all too short. I think this book could have cut out a lot of stuff and expanded its section of the design and construction much more.Even though I kind of sound negative, I like the book for what it is and find it helpful when I design and put together a cabinet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful ideas!
500 pages of cabinet designes in line drawing format! If you get one idea from this book it is worth the price, and believe me, there are many ideas you can use. I have been designing cabinets for a year now and this book has added to my ability to generate good designs for my clients.

3-0 out of 5 stars Do not confuse illustrations with photographs.
The only color photograph is on the cover. This is a big book with 500 pages, hundreds of drawings depicting many layouts and a clear list of cabinets needed along with additional materials required to complete each layout. Each of the twelve chapters focuses on a specific area such as bedrooms, baths, beverage centers, entertainment centers and utility areas. The author offers many design variations for each area.

3-0 out of 5 stars A must have book because it covers many subjects, but....
this book is great because it covers many many subjects, though not in that much detail or in very fine methods.it is very much out of date.the book is written for a british audience which is some times annoying, and there are many biased comments (in my opinion) that are british/european ways of working/thinking.the author also makes too many comments that voice his personal opinion, which is not all that important in a how-to book and is very different from my own opinions.I felt that the writer/editor or whoever disigned the format of the book must have been very lazy, because instead of placing pictures and the related text on the same page where you can see them clearly, there are countless instances where all the diagrams on a subject matter are slapped onto one or two pages and then refered to in text that is sometimes 3 or more pages away.very frustrating. The major strong point is that you can find many uncommon subjects such as info on tambours or webbing for seats, which is why i say that this book is a must have.the area where this book really falls short is the making of FINE furniture.I feel like this book is oriented towards readers that would make a living of furniture making, therefore the methods are just 'good enough,' and many of the furniture examples are very showy, with not much content, some you could call "expensively cheap."many of the examples are just awful - over use of and complete reliance on expensive showy wood, sharp veneered corners, awkward shapes, etc.if you want to see examples of fine, solidly constructed work that doesn't scream for attention, look at some of James Krenov's books.there you will find many fine details of woodworking, though some of the text is unclear at first. of course, there are many other fine works out there.between "The Encyclopedia of Furniture Making" and "The Complete Manual of Woodworking,"i personally recogmend the latter, although it is far from "complete."The Complete Manual of Woodworking" covers less subjects but goes into more detail, contains more usable info (instead of one writer's opinions), and has much better pictures and furniture examples.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
Every pictures looks like they were tooks in 1940's. Chapter on electrical tools is completely outdated. Nothing about new material like HDF/MDF. There's no "easy to understand" drawing nor plans. For a beginner it's not very interresing, this books is more based on "reading" and explanations than showing "how to". I'd ratter recommend books like "Complete guide to furniture and cabinet making" by A. Ray.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Full and Interesting Study of Glue
Much more than a reference guide about glues, this book is a full educational experience on the subject of woodworking glues and gluing techniques. You learn so much that, after reading "The Glue Book," you will mark your woodworking knowledge as "the era before Tandy" and "the era after Tandy."No other book on woodworking glue comes close to the level of detail and knowledge Tandy achieves here on this subject, a subject that is so vital to all successful woodworking.3-0 out of 5 stars Sort of expanded manufacturers literature to this reader.
This book tells about many glues and when they are normally used. It is not a definitive source. Lacking are complete technical descriptions of chemistry and why the glues work. After reading the book I didn't feel that I knew any more than I would have from reading the "always positive" manufacturers literature. If the author had the confidence to make some solid committal statements about what glues would be strongest when, it would have helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent book
As the title suggests the book is focussed on glue usage. What it doesn't tell you is that it is focussed solely on woodwork and woodworking glues. The author is obviously a master at his woodwork yet manages to set out the usage of the glue types in different types of woodwork in a plain, friendly manner that often feels like advice from a friend. Very well done. I am a chemist who works with wood as a hobby and I found the glue treatments sound, simple and practical. A must read and an excellent buy at the price. ... Read more
