4-0 out of 5 stars the biggest bargain in decoy carving books
I've been carving decoys and acquiring books on the subject since the 1950s. Currently my library contains about 50 titles covering the collecting side, the hunting side, and decoy construction.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for hunting decoy carvers.
This is a wonderful book that belongs on every hunting decoy carvers shelf. Bill Veasey takes a look at the construction and painting of 13 different species of hunting decoys. What makes this book so unique isthat you can see many different decoy makers styles, patterns and paintingtechniques. These decoys range from the most simple to very complex.Perfect for the guy that just wants to make a few blocks to hunt over, butequally as informative for the serious competitive decoy carver. BillVeasey has been around the decoy world for many years and alwaysincorporates his unique insight and style in all of his works.Of them allthough, this is probably his best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Info
This book is very good I must have read it 3-4 times the first month I had it and picked up tips each time. It is well written, easy to understand, as I have never built a boat before, still havn't but hope to this winter. Excellent intro to a project like this.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very handy technical back stop!!
This is a very useful book in terms of getting a handle on wood strip kayak construction. It is well written, concise and clear. It suffers from some unfortunate americanisms (eg material suppliers, wood types, etc). There are also some areas like staple-less construction that are not covered deeply enough - but overall a fine addition to the books in this space.
4-0 out of 5 stars S. Halgrimson
I have found The Strip-Built Sea Kayak an interesting book.I have not been able to build a boat yet but plan to this spring. I have graphed the forms and found the book to explain it well.I hope the rest of the boat goes as well as the forms did. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for new/infrequent user
The Complete Table Saw Book is useful for beginners and for those who have basic experience but have not been doing precision cutting.I found it helpful in setting things up and doing some semi-precise things.I expect to get a lot more out of it in the next few months as I get into more detailed projects.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Kindest Cut of All
For me, buying a new table saw is not only a cause for celebration, but an opportunity to shuffle through the shelves to find a book about my new toy. This one struck my eye - mostly because it was thicker than the others, was well laid out and seemed to cover all the salient points. Possibly not the best criteria in the world, but they have stood me in good stead for a long time now.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource and the new woodworker
Written primarily for the beginning to intermediate table saw user "The Complete Table Saw Book" provides thorough coverage of the art of using a table saw.The first part of the book examines the table saw itself and the coverage is excellent.Starting with an education on the various parts of the table saw it progresses through different types, blades, and functions.Next comes a thorough section on table saw maintenance and how to select a used table saw.The analysis of what to look for and how to determine the condition of a used saw is very detailed and well illustrated.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New version coming in June
Don't spend $40+ on a used book.Sterling Publishing is printing an updated version of this book to be released June 2006.

5-0 out of 5 stars print more of these books please, Mr Burton
I came to Amazon to find a copy of this book to share with a co-worker who restores antiques. I was stunned to find that one of my favorites in my extensive woodworking book collection was worth over double what I paid for it in 2001, as it is now only available in the used markets. All other reviews have said it best already - horse sense knowledge - no major investment required to veneer, cheapskate behavior encouraged even!! - humor - wisdom - honesty and ultimately the value of knowledge gained - a rare find indeed. Please, Mr Burton, print some more - you deserve the monetary rewards of this project. I've paid exorbitant prices for other rare woodwork related books. If you're reading this and trying to decide to pay the price for this book, you probably won't be disappointed if you do - it's that good. Again, I hope the author can arrange a way to print more and deservedly profit more from his honest sharing of his years of experience and invaluable time - it can enlighten and profit us all.

5-0 out of 5 stars "THE" Veneering Book
This is the one veneering book that will teach you what you need to know about veneers and veneering.Patching, flattening, glueing and types of glues, veneers and types of veneers, and a ton of other information, and tips and tricks. It is a very easy read, and very enjoyable as Mike Burton has a good sense of humor, and enjoys what he does.I look forward to other Mike Burton books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive book
I am retired and have a small shop where I do woodturning, make musical instruments, and a bit of cabinetry. I have a shelf full of woodworking books - but had I bought this one first my shelf would be smaller. It is the most comprehensive book I've seen. It has decent coverage on every topic, so many I can't list them (check the table of contents on-line). I'll not throw away my speciality books, but this is now my first reference. The most surprising entry was "how to coil a band saw blade", something I was looking for an answer to as I just got found myself in the position of changing among blades often (expanded my use of the saw). This book is one of the all time bargains.
4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for the beginner
This book goes into almost every possible minutia of many of the common and uncommon aspects of woodworking. Including but not limited to Joints, Tools, and types of wood. Its sort of an "everything you ever wanted to know about woodworking but was afraid to ask" sort of book. Its really a good resource for the beginner. The drawings are a bit cheesy however.....

5-0 out of 5 stars A little out dated, but a great source of info.
The references to power tools are outdated, but everything else is very informative. The book gives you a lot of information about different types of wood and instruction regarding different types of joints. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Weekend Woodworking:150 Easy Projects
book came promptly and was in excellent condition.Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
I have a LOT of books and magazines full of plans for all sorts of things, but this one really stands out.So many quick easy projects you run across out there are for things that are outdated or are just plain dumb. This book is different - - the plans are for things that are actually useful and good-looking, things you'll want to make, and be proud of.As soon as I got the book I proceeded to make a bunch of the photo stands as Christmas gifts. There are some really simple items that can be made with a minimum of tools, and others that will be of interest to those with a shop full of power tools. These projects are especially great for those times when you don't want to spend several weeks building something. They're just fun projects that only require a day or two to complete, with a minimum amount of wood and expense.I highly recommend this book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars has info others don't.
This book is a bit out of date and geared toward the outback builders who want to build a cabin cheap.I'm one of those so I liked it but there's no color pictures etc.Has lots of information on how to get the job done without a lot of money and deals with the complete house including site selection all the way through move in.400+ pages where most are only around 200.I'd get another book if I was just getting one, but makes a good addition to the newer ones.

1-0 out of 5 stars 12 year old out dated book
Do not recommend buying, black and white old, old pictures, unless you feel like taking out a chain saw (or axe) and using antique tools to build one, forget this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Material
... I have been building regular frame construction houses and wanted to try something new by building some log homes in the mountains of Colorado where I live.I bought about every book that Amazon had to offer on log home construction. I was excited to get my copy of "Complete Guide to Building Log Homes" as it seemed to be the "bible" I was looking for.I was extremely disappointed. First off the book was printed in 1990 and the material used is 10-15 years out of date with today's construction methods. Even the pictures look like they are from the 1960's.There was even a picture where he tells you how to hand mortice an end joint and he is building a home with bark still on the logs !!!! That just isn't how things are done today. No mention of tongue and groove joints, prefinished and pre cut packages, D-cut logs, etc. He is out of date with todays construction. This book is a waste of money when there are books ... on building log homes that are written less than a year ago. Save your money. I sent mine back !!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lavish Coffee Table Book on British Campaign Furniture
This book is a must have for anyone interested in English antiques, social, military, or naval history. I have never seen another book on this subject and it is filled with very interesting "before" and "after" photographs of dozens and dozens of pieces of campaign furniture "assembled" and "disassembled." I imagine this book has been a great hit in London.

5-0 out of 5 stars Instructional and Inspirational
This book is instructional in nature with alot of beautiful inlay work completed by the author and from other inlay artist. It teaches alot of inlay techniques and how to do quality inlay work. This book is for the beginner and then some. The pictured work is inspirational and worth the price alone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
I'm beginning to build guitars and wanted to do inlay work which was a little more intricate than simple pearl dots. The writer explains the process completely. The book also has many photos showing incredible inlay art which serves as inspiration for detailed guitar fingerboard art as well as inspiration for inlay art not associated with instuments. I've never even wanted to build a jewelry box with inlay and marquetry. Now I'm inpired to do just that. Good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Master Craftsman
I should start out this review by confessing that I'm biased.I own a custom guitar on which Larry Robertson did the inlay work.Since I'm one of those people who gets very involved in the design of anything that interests me, Larry and I had quite a few talks about what I wanted and how things would be done. This was an educational experience that was worth the price of entry itself, and the result never fails to amaze me.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A personal treasure
Flora Gill Jacobs shares her collection as though you were able to spend months with her personally. If you ever wished you could get in to the archives, to really and truly speak with the expert, to understand the particular details of other time periods, to hear the adventures of acquisition, this book will will be deeply satisfying. This is no dry catalogue.Anyone with the slightest interest in the architecture and artifacts of the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth century will be enchanted. Surely those who have the imagination to mentally inhabit a small scale world will appreciate the beautiful photography.Collectors will find the pictures invaluable. The images present the objects as you might view them yourself.First the overall view and then many of the fine details separately.Mrs. Jacobs writing draws the reader close, whether you are a child transported by imagination or an adult collector searching for information. If you are interested enough in this topic to read the reviews, then you certainly will be satisfied with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book - a woodworkers essential
Alot of philosphy, mostly biographical, has a few quotes that stick:
5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and inspiring book
Like the books of James Krenov, "The Soul of a Tree" is as much a book about philosophy as it is about wood. And it's a good philosophy:slow down, take your time, play with the wood, and enjoy it. The book is really about the soul of Nakashima. He outlines some of his own personal history and how he developed his ideas about craft. There's not really much on technique here - you can certainly find better books for that - but you won't find many more inspiring.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Style.
The author omit needless wood and carve great pieces of furniture. It is like zen on wood. You will not regret the money you spent on this title. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief Carving Tips
I feel this book is well worth its cost.As an inexperienced carver I was looking for some detailed hints that would improve my work.Mr. Schroeder has some valuable advice that we should all implement when creating a masterpiece. This book is geared to the relief carver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do really want to know how to make great reliefs?
This book is exactly what its title says. If you are new to relief carving, you might think that realistic relief carving involves simply in the carving half round. But this approach will not be satisfactory. This book shows to how even very shallow relief can be amazingly realistic if proper perspective is used. The book has several simple projects in the beginning to help you master the basic principles. Then you can carve a very nice nautical scene which is detailed step by step with ample photos. He uses both standard wood carver's hand tools such as gouges and also power tools including a router and a dremel. I rated this a 5 because of the efective way the content is organized and the detail provided.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
I haven't yet purchased this book - but had a chance to take a good long look at it at bookstore.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Straightforward, Instructive
A really excellent resource for a new or slightly experienced craftsman who would like a good introduction to getting more out of his/her tablesaw than the usual, basic cuts. Good photos, good explanations of the jigs, and most importantly: No time wasted discussing (ugh) "how to choose a table saw."
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Accurate
I took a cabinet making class from Ken Burton last year. He's an exceptional craftsman with remarkable range. This book is very much like his class... there's no fluff. It's practical, accurate, and usable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book
I feel like I'm repeating the gist of the first reviewer's comments, but it seems worth the effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars All You need
If you want to build a greenland kayak then this is all you need. Instructions are clear and not wordy. It also has sections on making paddles and paddling clothing. The style shown in this book has slight deviations from the original greenland technique but he specifically states all the changes. I built a kayak from this book with my only help being a second pair of hands, and i am only 15. The boat was exactly to his designs and it is fast, fairly stable, and responsive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book with lots of details and pictures
This is a terrific book.I bought Robert Morris' book on Skin on Frame building and had many questions.Chris Cunningham's book provides lot of details and answered my questions. Both books compliment each other and since I do not know much about this process, I consider both required reading before I build.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great detail and instruction
This book was great for a novice builder like myself. The intructions were clear and easy to follow. I like the way the instruction passages started with the result intended followed by detailed instructions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Things Work
For the most part hardware is an unromantic subject.Frequently your options are plain and hidden away, and, unless you make your own, the fun stops as soon as you make your choices.Yet a mistake in the use or installation of hardware is often the mistake that is spotted first, easily becoming the ruin if hours of painstaking work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
This book has far exceeded my expectations. The photos and instructions are clear, concise, and of professional quality. R. Settich presents the material in a knowledgeable and fun way. A must have resource for any workshop!

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I expected information about design, but this is just a self serving "I am good at what I do" book. I am sure he is good but there is little or no information about how to actually desigh furniture. No proportions, no instruction except make your mistakes on paper by sketching first. A waste of good money.

1-0 out of 5 stars I was mega-disappointed.
After reading the two reviews, I thought this would be a great introduction to furniture design.I was expecting information such as generally accepted proportions of furniture elements, possibly a discussion of the application of the golden rectangle, and other non-obvious thoughts. The information is very high-level and broad. This book is so light on real information that I consider it useless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring book.
This is a beautiful book, nicely laid out, with inspiring photography. The book has 12 chapters, the first 6 cover general design and construction topics, and the remaining 6 each look at a particular type of furniture. Read more
