Great cook book for beginners and semi-beginners!
I love this book.I also own the original Now You're Cooking.Elaine Corn gives great instructions, tips and the recipes are wonderful.I have used her books countless times when having company.I especially like the fact that she tells you the order of preparation and how to time everything.These books are great for college grads or brides.And the Chocolate chip cookie recipe in the Now You're Cooking book is the BEST.

Elaine Corn is a lifesaver!
I love this book! I have 'Now You're Cooking' as well and they are the two most used books in my collection. The recipes are for good, simple, full flavor meals. If you weren't raised in the chicken it can be daunting learning to cook, especially if you don't want to live off of boxed/canned foods. Must Have!
This book is a life saver!!!
A must have for throwing the best cocktail parties!
Leslie Brenner's book is a terrific reference book for anyone who enjoys entertaining.The book starts off with an outstanding recap of the history of cocktail parties.The author includes tidbits like the most popular drinks from certain eras.Who would have thought that the `cocktail dress' deserves it's own discussion? I don't know about any of you, but my social inadequacies come up when I have people over to entertain.This book was very helpful to me and humorously written. The recipes are varied and good. LOVE this book!
Take it from a cook that has tons of cookbooks. This is one of my all time favorites. All of the recipes I've tried have been wonderful, healthy, and a big hit. People always ask me for the recipes. I've made the shrimp and grits casserole, chinese fried rice, tiramisu, bbq shrimp and others. I've even given it for gifts and everyone loves it. The layout and photography are also very well done.

Fantatistic party planning--the easy way!!
This is a great book.I have it on my coffee table because the photographs are so beautiful but it holds the secret to making yourself look like a party planner and a cook without difficulty.The menu suggestions make entertaining a pleasant experience and the Mexican Fiesta is my favorite.However, I am going to use Holly Clegg's ideas for my Superbowl Party in January to impress my guests and family.This is really a "MUST" for every kitchen.You will make a lasting impression! ... Not so great
Oliver's book provides a good deal of information on beer styles, but it is more or less a watered down version of some of Michael Jackson's books (which I would recommend purchasing instead of this one).His food pairings are helpful, but nothing a slightly adventurous beer drinker with a decent beer store nearby couldn't figure out on his/her own.
No Recipes?
I guess I should have taken advantage of Amazon's "Look Inside" option for this book. For all the talk of food and beer, I thought I'd find at least a handful of food recipes using beer in it.

Easy Access to Good Food
I began cooking from this book about 12 years ago, when it was first released in hardcover. I did not know Jaques Pepin's reputation, I simply wanted recipes one can do quickly. My bottom line on this book is that it succeeded in delivering on the promise of the book's title. No Ego Here -- A Title That Delivers

Designer's book is a flop
Being heavily involved in producing large events, I would have expected a much better book.The ideas offered were mediocre at best.Better you focus on decor ideas by companies such as Avi Adler or Preston Bailey (their work is of better quality) and consult real caterers for food.Both Avi & Preston are much more creative and versatile than anything offered in this book.I can tell you this from first hand experience.

All About Working With Party Planners
I expected a book on how to plan your own parties, nice doable tips - not at all what this book is about.If you want tips on hiring a party planner or other party services, this is for you.If you like to do things yourself, ie.cook, plan, decorate, look elsewhere.

the information imparted in the text is questionable, and the directives are sloppy.it is neither a guide for housewives nor resource for professionals.a disappointment.

we found this book to be very instructive towards developing a buffet for a large amount of people.It is a book geared towards professional chefs. a majority of the recipes are the basics required to create a standardbuffet.the more advanced chef will use these as a guide for moreinventive dishes.

As good as it gets for general use cook books.
I bought this a year ago for my wife for her birthday on the recommendation of a friend.It has proven to be one of the hest gifts I've given her in the 27 years we've been together. AJLI has done it again...excellent job!

It Lacks Pictures...
When I ordered this book, I was impressed by the title and the beautiful marzipan rose on the cover. I am very disappointed to find out that it lacks pictures. It has NO pictures at all. The font and the layout are very nice and the instructions are clear. Most of the recipes are set as menus and the ingredients are not hard to find. However, I do not enjoy reading the recipes nor feel like trying them because I do not know what they will look like. I have had the book for about a year and have not tried any of its recipes yet.

Fussy, Fussy, Fussy!
I was excited to find a book filled with fun, fresh summer ideas but one look inside and I was so disappointed. The premise of the book is fresh, easy meals that appeal in those lazy summer days and nights yet the book is filled with not terribly interesting, not terribly difficult but very fussy meals. Who needs that in the summer? and who needs this book -- certainly not me!

Just not for me
I have to tell you for the average midwest simple minded cook, this is not the book for me. I was pretty disappointed when I received the book as a gift. The recipes seem to be to involved and high maintence ingredience. I think this book is more for the expreinced gourmet cook than us simple minded ones.

I Love Theme Parties!
Theme parties are great!Getting your guests to "dress the part" isn't at all difficult!If you want people to dress up, just inform them that it is a "themed costume party".Your guests will try to out-do each other with their creative costumes.It really makes things a lot of fun and makes decorating in a theme really worth the effort!My friends and I have one about once a month.
Dreadful.Our partywas almost a fiasco
We planned a wonderful dinner party for 100 guests at our waterfront home. I hired the best chef & event planner I could find and told them to follow this book. They said they many of the things just would not work or would take forever. Get's the juices flowing!
Now I know that we can't all go to Texas to have an authentic Tex-Mex fiesta, but the ideas are great none the less. Who care's if no one comes dressed the part? This book is all about themes. Themes that you can manipulate and call your own. Each party is beautifully photographed and the recipes are delicious. They even offer her infamous "Good Things" as a sidebar for many of the parties. Don't let the perfection overwhelm you. This book delievers. ... Read more

Very helpful
I thought that this book was very helpful and gave a lot great ideas. I was not disappointed at all.

Big disappointment
I ordered this book sight unseen, based on the reputation of Town and Country magazine for a high taste level and sophistication.I was very disappointed and have returned the book.The photos are uninspiring, and the text elementary.On the other hand, if you need to know that when you receive an invitation to a party you should respond, and if you need to know that you should place forks to the left of a place setting and the knives and spoons to the right of a place setting, maybe you would like this book.

Total disappointment
I saw this book advertised in Town and Country magazine, and when I was not able to find it locally, I ordered it sight unseen.I expected it to be a sophisticated and lovely book, based on Town and Country's reputation and taste level.I plan to return the book. I would be embarrassed to give it as a gift, it is so ordinary and mediocre.Even the photographs are uninspiring. However, if you need to know that when you receive an invitation, you should reply to the hostess, or if you need to know that the flatware is placed at the place setting in the order in which it is used (with the forks to the left and the spoons and knives to the right), maybe you would like this book. You'll find lots of other entertaining books FAR superior.........for example the book of a couple years ago, At Home with Carolyne Roehm, is still at the top of the pile!Forget about ordering this book.Save your money. ... Recommended for both the novice and accomplished cooks
Here's a cookbook sure to please everyone. Written by popular Christian singing star Michael W.
