5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you will need
I have used this book time and time again, and not only for Christmas. The recipes are accurate, easy and great. The color photos really show how the recipes should look and they will!I have made more that a dozen different types of cookies from this book and each one was good if not great. The only problem I have with this book is that the ingredients are written into the directions. This makes it a little more time consuming when you are trying to get your recipes ready before the actual assemble and baking process.A minor set back for a really great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holiday cookies that look great and taste good!
I've used this cookie book when making holiday cookies for family and friends for the last several years, and the results have always been a huge hit.Too often Christmas cookies look great but taste terrible - not something to worry about with this book.I particularly recommend the Cranberry-Cherry Pinwheels. They are delicious and surprisingly easy to prepare. However, be forwarned that most of the recipes in this book are also found in the new Joy of Cooking.Joy is great and much more comprehensive.I'd recommend taking a look at it before buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for holiday baking!
As the designated Christmas cookie baker in my family, I was given this book about three years ago. It's a wonderful resource for new ideas and rediscovering old favorites. I heartily recommend the snickerdoodles and the orange ginger wafers. ... Read more

Over a hundred recipes pair with bright color photos to provide only the best results from the Better Homes and Gardens Test Kitchen - but this book doesn't stop with recipes alone, as most do: it offers up over fifty ideas for packaging cookies to give as gifts, and includes complete patterns for four gingerbread houses.

I was really excited to add some new christmas cookie recipes when I bought this book.My husband and I narrowed our choices down to four of the recipes in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars NEVER TOO EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS
The "Traditions of Christmas" isn't a holiday craft project book, nor is it a holiday cookbook, although there are some recipes in it.No, this is a fond look at Christmas traditions around the country produced by the editors of Victoria Magazine. It's a look at families gathered by the hearth, snow covered churches, and dazzling Christmas displays, all which makes one wax poetically about that perfect Christmas that we all strive for.Featuring brilliant full-color photography and accompanied by thoughts or verses by notable writers, "The Traditions of Christmas" is a wonderful complement to that favorite time of the year.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent source for Christmas recipes
Camille Glenn's book of old fashioned Christmas recipes is a pure delight. Not only are the recipes clear, easy to read and tasty when prepared, butthe format is "cook friendly" and easy to follow. Mostingredients for the recipes can be found at the grocery store, with a fewexceptions. I've owned and read many cookbooks over the years, and I wouldhighly recommend this Louisville, Kentucky cooking teacher's book as eithera gift for an aspiring chef or as a nice Christmas gift for anyone whoenjoys fine cuisine and Southern hospitality. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME Cookbook!
I have been so pleased with this cookbook - I bought it about a year ago and it has fast become my new favorite.Every time I make a recipe from this book, the recipe becomes a new favorite.Last night I had friends over and made the "Rich and Creamy Cheesecake" recipe.I am a cheesecake fan and have probably eaten more cheesecake in my life than I should admit. The recipe in this book was honestly BY FAR the best cheesecake I have ever tasted in my entire life - even better than I have eaten at gourmet restaurants. It was mind-blowingly delicious. That's just one example of the wonderful experiences I have had using this book. The recipes are not difficult either. The directions are very clear and I like how they preface each recipe with an explanation of how they formulated it to be the "best recipe".
4-0 out of 5 stars Good read, good recipes, but...
If you are already familiar with Cook's Illustrated magazine or the television show, then you won't be surprised by the format of this cookbook which devotes as much space (or more) to explaining how the recipes were derived as it does actually giving instructions. It gets a little too fussy for my taste sometimes, however, and while the directions and illustrations are clear and very helpful, the recipes themselves can be quite involved, with extra steps and odd amounts. For instance, I just made a cobbler dough that called for 6 tablespoons of milk. Making six separate measurements introduced that many more opportunities for small error, and my dough ended up a little wet. Better to call for 1/3 cup and have the cook adjust as necessary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who can follow direction
I was initially hesitant to buy this book mainly because of the title - I can't even count the number of times I've fallen for some marketing trick and been sorely disappointed. But this was one time I did not regret my purchase at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overall Cookbook
My 13-year-old son checked this out from his school library, and now I'm buying one.It is a wonderful collection of all types of recipes: snacks, quick meals, delicious desserts, side dishes even my kids will eat! Many of the recipes include ingredients I keep on hand, but the ingredients I don't keep around are readily available, even in my small-town grocery store. My teenagers can make most of these on their own, and even my elementary-aged kids can help.I highly recommend this book for busy families.

Editorial Review

Interior designer Jill Williams Grover remembers that as a young girl, she chose her trick-or-treat visits not for what candy she'd receive but because of the front porch decorations. Obviously her fascination with Halloween continued into adulthood, and her marvelously inventive guide shows you how to turn your own home into a coveted trick-or-treating stop or the perfect place for a Halloween party. "Scary Nibbles" offers spooky snacks, like Ghost Sticks (white-chocolate-covered pretzel sticks) or Hand Full of Candy (a latex glove fitted with pointy black fingernails and filled with jawbreakers). "Enter at Your Own Risk" lets you startle your arriving visitors with blood-red footprints marching up the Poppin' Walkway (the secret is bubble wrap) and provides ideas for eerie decor, such as a witch hat luminary, masked and jeweled pumpkins, skeleton topiary, and of course, the Invisible Man. "Frightful Feast" sets forth a tablescape of ghoulish goodies, from spiderweb invitations, spider tablecloth, and bat napkins to dripping candles and Dracula's Bow Tie Pasta. "Goblin Gathering" rounds out the spooky selections with a Cyclops Mug, Frankenstein Cone Cake, and relevant place cards, place mats, and other tableware. Complete directions are given for all the projects, and there are recipes for the edibles (enough for a full-fledged Halloween dinner party). The great color photos make clear that these scary scenes are both fun and sophisticated--though kids will adore them, they'll also delight the grownups brave enough to venture into your house. 1-0 out of 5 stars stay away from this author
I have been working in the design field for over 10 years now and I have yet to see a worse ripp off then this author not only are there no directions to her projects, but who would want to engage them selves in anything that turned out so chic and cheesey. I have personally met the author and her family I knew them for quite a while infact and never did I find that she could creatively enhance a project. she has some small skill in putting together junk so it doesn't look so much like junk. butlets face it - it's still junk. not something I would put in my house nor in my clients homes.

3-0 out of 5 stars not so scary
This book is good if you need some inspiration. There are not a lot of SCARY crafts in this book. The candy wrapper buckets are a cute idea.I also liked the black pumpkins. Some of the crafts were lame. For instance, one was called "witch hat luminary" and its made of an orange traffic cone that you spray paint black and put a light under it.Where do you find a traffic cone without stealing one?3-0 out of 5 stars A few cute ideas, NOT scary
Not a bad book for the price.A close look at the cover reveals what most projects are like--cute for preschool children but not scary.Good color photos but annoying that they are not on the page oposite the directions. ... Read more

Beautifully photographed and illustrated historical cookbook. This book is a delightful education in the history of Christmas cooking in America. You feel as though you are touring a museum decorated for the holidays with delicious spreads and a peek in the kitchen. The kind hostess left a copyof the recipe for you to take home and try.I was attracted to the photoof Christmas barley candy made in molds to look like stained glass shipsand circus animals. The textunfolds a story of the influences andchanges in American Christmas celebrations.I love cookbooks where thephotos letyousavor the foods while you read and with this book I canalmost smell the "Humbug Pie".There are close ups of the completed recipes so you see how your attempts should look. This book is agreat find for those who love historical cookbooks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Passover help
This book has everything you need to make your sedar a success, from the basics to the more complicated. There is no pictures in the book of the items.I noticed some of the items need to be spiced up to taste, other wise there bland. For new or not so new jews, this book will be helpful in getting through the 8 breadless days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Gefilte Fish
Zell Schulman should be commended for this fabulous Passover cookbook. With a beautiful layout, charming line illustrations (and a few color photographs), and clear text, she makes the idea of tackling a seder seem absolutely doable.Of particular note are the many "menus" she suggests, detailing recipes for multi-course meals. She has different suggestions for Ashkenazic, Sephardic, "off the shelf" (utilizing available kosher for passover products), vegetarian, healthful (low in fat but high in flavor), and an ecumenical potluck (acknowledging the fact that many other religious groups choose to observe the holiday that was the cause of the Last Supper of Jesus and his apostles). The ecumenical potluck has kosher suggestions but all the other menus are described in a kosher format (meat, pareve or dairy).5-0 out of 5 stars It made my very first seder a hit!
Its a valuable book for anyone preparing for Passover ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars So-So Cookie Book
If you are looking for a dessert cookbook, try the 500 Cupcakes book instead. It is as if someone didn't proofread this book. The front of the book says to use self-rising flour but then in all of the recipes it says to use all-purpose flour. There are tons of confusing things like this throughout the book. But this book sure is cute!

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for anyone who enjoys diversity in dessert
A compact compendium of five hundred recipes for cookies drawn from all over the world, Philippa Vanstone's 500 Cookies is organized with separate chapters devoted to classic cookies, teatime cookies, cookies for kids, chocolate cookies, celebration cookies, wholesome healthy cookies, cookies for special diets, cookie bars, dessert cookies, and savory cookies & crackers. An informative introduction and a thoroughly "user friendly" index round out this remarkable collection of delicious cookie treats that range from Scottish Shortbread; Polenta Crescents; Chocolate Spice Cookies; and Cinnamon Stars; to Applesauce Cookies; Chewy Almond Cherry Bars; Cream Cheese Cookie Slices; and Blue Cheese Crumbles. Along with the list of ingredients and "kitchen cook friendly" instructions, each cookie is also illustrated with a color photograph. 500 Cookies will soon prove to be a family favorite on the cookbook shelf as it showcases traditional fare with exotic offerings suitable for any and all dining occasions from after school snacks to elegant dining occasions.
