5-0 out of 5 stars New Inspiration for Thanksgiving meal planning
I was so inspired by the authors presentation that I made my own dinner napkins (I've never sown) purchased a new table cloth, made napkin holders and candle center pieces.Set the table the night before and took a picture! The turkey brining write up conviced me that it was the way to go - along with the roasting receipes and stuffing. My dinner guest have decided that this will be the only way future turkeys can be served! The meal was soooooo good - Thanks Diane Morgan for your work on this project - it's a success in my book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gourmet Thanksgiving Recipes
I used the "Search Inside this Book" feature of Amazon to try out some of the recipes in this book for this year's Thanksgiving.I made the carrot pudding souffle, the jalapeno cheddar cornbread stuffing, and the sweet potato wedges. All came out wonderfully! The cornbread stuffing was the biggest hit.I strongly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book - highly recommended
I purchased this book only recently and tried it out over the past holiday.I can now heartily endorse it.Ms. Morgan has put together a collection of easy to follow recipes that will liven up your Thanksgiving table. Many look like your standard fare, but have been jazzed up with new preparation techniques.A perfect example is the Chiffonade of Brussel Sprouts.I have to have brussel sprouts on my table every year, but was so bored with them.I followed her technique for shredding them, then sauteeing - they came out like a warm slaw, perfectly cooked and offset with the hazelnuts - I had no leftovers at all!I will be making that dish again, for sure.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the uninitiated
I am not accustomed to vegetarian cooking, but I would like to do more of it.That's why I got this cookbook.I do not think this a great book for "starter" vegetarians-- the flavors are often quite unusual. The first thing I made was the Chili with chocolate. It tasted so terrible that I am embarassed to say that I threw out the whole pot.Maybe next time I will stumble upon a book that will appeal to my less sophisticated palette.
3-0 out of 5 stars slightly disappointed
I love Moosewood- I love visiting and I love their cookbooks, and, like many people out there, I owe much of my culinary incliantions to them. I can't place what it was, but somehow this book just didn't measure up to the others in their collection. It isn't that these are not meals you would serve for "festive" occasions, it is just that none of them really struck me as something I would want to serve while playing hostess to people whom I have never cooked for before. There are so many other great recipies from the Moosewood that would be more appealing- especially if you are serving guests who are not vegetarians (meaning, I don't think any of these meals would really impress non-veggies). I would suggest getting one of the other books in the collection, and choosing meals for yourself that you think would best suit your occasion.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of her worst - a cut & paste job
This is old articles from her magazine and the advice was not very good. There are better books.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books for entertaining
Well done and illustrated, these are features from the early days of the magazine.I can personally vouch for the pear bread pudding and the torta di riso--a lot of work but like a lot of things, WELL worth the effort. I don't know if I could do all of those things at once for one activity, especially the wedding at home. But in addition to all the recipes and chapters, it's idea-inspiring.Which is what Martha is all about (that, and the stock market!)

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all occasions

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheesecake Gone Terribly Wrong
This book is certainly beautiful, but the one recipe I chose to make was a disaster! I made the Cranberry Beach-Plum Cheesecake on page 129 which calls for cream cheese, ricotta, sour cream, and ten eggs, but NO sugar! This was not a savory cheesecake, but a DESSERT, and the tart cranberry topping and graham cracker crust could not compensate for the blandness of straight cheese and eggs, flavored only with vanilla. It was so startling and unexpected that my friend actually spit it out.4-0 out of 5 stars Cozy and Comfortable

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Indispensible Cookbook EVER!
I collect, read, savor, and love reading cookbooks. This cookbook is a KEEPER. Every recipe in it is a 100% success. The one recipe that totally separated this book for all others is Bubbie's Orange and Oil Hamantaschen recipe. We've all tried to make hamantaschen with the dough collapsing or sticking all over. Not any more, with Ms Goldman's amazing recipe you too can make wonderful hamantaschen. I did it at home, with kids I teach, even made them at camp. Buy this cookbook, You'll be glad you did!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly wonderful!
This book is truly awesome ... tried-and-true specialties, each written very clearly to guarantee success, and each preceded by a brief description telling why it is so wonderful. The first recipe I tried was the Caramel Matzoh Crunch, which has now become a staple.I'm not Jewish; these wonderful recipes should appeal to anyone with taste buds. The only caveat is that the author apparently revised her Honey Cake after the book was published -- and even I, who previously despised honey cake, love Marcy Goldman's. (The revised version was published in the newspaper, and that's the one I tried.)Don't miss this book; it is absolutely wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it love it love it, Not for everyone.
I absolutly love to cook, have been to culinary school, also not afraid of new things. I have tried most of these recipies and many have become regulars. The smoked salmon terrine although is expensive we normally make on every holiday now. Sugarcane Baked Ham with Spiced Apples and Pears is super. Beef Tenderloin with Fresh Horseradish and Black Pepper Crust was suprizing ly good, I ont like horseradish at all, but it was paired so beautifully in this recipie it was sublime. Jiffy Pop Firecracker Shrimp we make everytime we have shrimp in the house. the Chocolate Chocolate Pudding Cake with Chocolate Ganache, Creole Christmas Trifle, Creole Christmas Fruitcake with Whiskey Sauce and the Banana Cream Pie with Caramel Drizzle and Chocolate Sauces is to die for, however this recipie is written with the assumption you have made custards b4 and know you need to temper it beford adding the hot milk mixture. I have not made the Lobster Cheesecake with Christmas Caviar Sauce but hope to soon. the big boy cookies and the spiced pecans...Ummm yummy, I am soo happy to have bought this book. If you are open to try new things, If you like to occasionally like to indulge and eat like something so decatend and pretend that it is a common thing, this book is definatly for you. Emmeril, you are my hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart--but worth it!
If you're only familiar with Emeril from his TV appearances, this book may surprise you. It lacks the flamboyance and loud flashiness, replacing them with a certain elegance and gourmet style. It includes a Christmas Eve dinner for ten, Emeril's Christmas Day brunch buffet, New Orleans New Year's Eve dinner, a New Year's Day supper family style, the Chef's holiday favorites, and Emeril's "stocking stuffers."5-0 out of 5 stars kick your christmas up a notch!

2-0 out of 5 stars Neat Idea but...
I purchased all four Mug'em books. They all have some really neat ideas, but be warned that what you give away does not include all the necessary ingredients. With some of them the recipient only needs to add simple things like water and other common household ingredients. Some require the addition of small amounts of things most people don't normally keep in their house and probably wouldn't purchase just for the small quantity needed. Other items require the recipient to add so many things that you might as well have not given the gift to begin with.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to the celebration of Kwanzaa.
Ms. Harris' book, "A Kwanzaa Keepsake: Celebrating the Holiday With New Traditions and Feasts," is excellent.I knew nothing about Kwanzaa when I picked it up but felt as though I had been thoroughlyintroduced to a marvelous seven-day series of ceremonies, feasts andcelebrations.I came away with a great deal of respect for Kwanzaa and theseven principles behind it.It is unfortunate, however, that the creatorof Kwanzaa,Maulana Karenga, felt it necessary to discriminate against allbut African Americans, for all mankind would benefit from participating inthis moving celebration. We could all stand to be affirmed and reaffirmedas members of our families, our communities and our cultures on an annualbasis. ...
