3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but, needs a bit more
I'd never seen a real recipe for sugarplums. That was really a treat. The confections are obviously high class and fancy. The only thing I found wrong with it was that there were not enough photographs included in it. I mainly bought the book because there's a marzipan pig recipe and eggnog truffles. Unfortunately, there were no pictured instructions on how to form them or what they look like after they're made. There are nice pictures included, just not enough of them. But again, I can tell that the recipes are of very good quality. Enough so to make what's displayed in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars For candy lovers everywhere...
This book is not only gorgeous, the recipes are easy and taste out of this world. I made turtles first thing, and was astonished at how easy it was. Course, then I had to eat the 48 turtles I just made, which wasn't too difficult! The instructions are simple to follow, and the results are spectacular. I recommend it to anyone who loves candy or loves making special gifts. Top notch!! ... Read more

First I start with what I did like in the book and that was the decorations, wether it was for keepsakes or temperarely projects, they are nice and fun to do.The recepies however were not halloween minded enough tomy liking and of the 18 recepies there was only 1 with picture.Surely asthis is a book "full" of ideas they could have shared more ideason how to present the food.Plenty of pictures though of the costumes wich Ifound very childish.Granted, they are childrens costumes but they lackedimaganation I thought. Its a shame that there arent any costumeideas foradults in the book.Theres a great book on my bookshelf about decoratingyour house for halloween and that is Halloween decoratingby Arts &Crafts for Home Decorating. Its less childish than Handmade Halloween.ISBN0-86573-415-1.It was rewarded with the Benjamin Franklin Award and isclearly the best book on Halloween crafts I have yet seen. ... "In Judaism, since the spiritual and the physical are intimately connected, each has the power to enhance and infuse vitality into the other, creating a divine partnership. This concept of beauty and spirituality is most attainable during the Jewish holidays." So writes Rita Milos Brownstein, in the introduction to Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly inspiring, a little cheesy.
I've turned to this book again and again for Jewish holiday celebrations, and it often has lovely ideas.Just as often, some of them strike me as rather improbable and silly. On the plus side, the sukkahs she describes making are lovely interpretations of the idea, but on the minus side, trying to follow her directions to actually construct one will make you crazy.BELIEVE ME.I've used some of her ideas for Rosh Hashanah cards and been pleased with the results, but the Purim costumes and mishloach manot baskets mostly seem silly. And make your own journal for Yom Kippur?I don't know, I'm always way too busy to mess with something like that. Many of her recipes are surprisingly delicious, especially her orange-chocolate hamantaschen and the raspberry linzer-torte hamantaschen...YUM!So while it's not always consistent, I am glad to have it in my library nonetheless.

great book for the holidays added alot of fun and meaning to our celebrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Holiday Style...
I bought this book for myself, and five more copies for my friends and family. This passover I am planning on making three matzah-cover vases formy pesach table, and I'm also going to have a glass-square sedar plate. These stylish things are chic and inexpensive, plus they look great withany room or setting. The book itself has more knowledge than any otherstyle book: usually books are either one or the other. Is Ms. Brownsteinplanning on writing any books in the future? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars itty bitty delights
I found this book on a clearance rack, but after using it, I would definitely have paid full price. The Mexican wedding cookies are hands down the best I've ever had.I make the chocolate chocolate chip cookies all the time.Using the book requires a little patience because each recipe make hundreds of treeny tiny cookies, although Brooks does give techniques to make it go faster.Complaints about the book: the chocolate chip cookie recipe is oily and gross.Either the proportions are wrong, or pine nuts cannot be substituted for pinon nuts. Many recipes are for pan cookies that you simply cut into teeny tiny squares.Seems like that could be done with any bar cookie. But there are enough winners in the book to make it worthwhile, plus people just love the little cookies.I put them in Chinese food take out boxes lined with tissue to make a great gift. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tempting Holiday fare
This has beautiful pictures and all the meals look lovely. The recipe for Honey-brined turkey with cream gravy was out of this world. There are creamy scrambled eggs with herbs, cheddar cheese biscuits with dill and chives, wild rice dressing with pearl onions, and so much more! There is even a section dedicated explaining the differences between dressing and stuffing.Excellent!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lack of photos mars this presentation of great recipes.
As always, Bon Appetit offers up recipes that are well-written and delicious. The scope of this book isn't limited to Christmas. If covers the whole holiday season - Thanksgiving to New Years. There are wonderful menus for entertaining in a variety of settings and many supplemental recipes. There is also a section on treats to make for gifts. Unfortunately, there are not many photographs in this book.Especially in a holiday cookbook, pictures are indispensible. As good as a recipe for a special Christmas cookie may be, I want to SEE what the finished product looks like, especially if I'm thinking about giving them as gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bon Appetit!
If you love the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day, then you will love this cookbook. It is bursting with the best-of-the-season recipes and you can choose between casual or elegant fare.If you want to plan a Christmas Cocktail Party or host a Tree-Trimming Buffet for 16...they have it all organized.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Whole Family CAN Enjoy this Magickal Little Volume!!
I bought this book with a bit of skepticism...a book on valentines alone, coming in at 96 pages?? Could this be good? Would it have very many good craft projects that I would ACTUALLY be able to do or that I would WANT to do? Any that my kids (at ages 3 & 5) would be able to help with? Would I be able to adapt any of what was in these pages to "punch up" or help take my magickal working into some new areas (hey, who cannot use a bit of help in the romance department every now and then...keeps things interesting and fun!)I have to admit I've had a few stinkers of late when it comes to books of this kind.I must say I was very pleasantly (very, very) surprised when I got it..4-0 out of 5 stars Valentine Treats

From the man who reinvented Thanksgiving comes--Christmas!This isn't to say that Buddhists, Jews, and Muslims should read no further. We're talking end-of-the-year feasting here. 4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD CHRISTMAS EDUCATION
Having Rodgers' Thanksgiving 101 book I decided to try his Christmas 101 book, too. This is not, nor is it meant to be the all-encompassing cookbook for Christmas. It is a rather slight book at under 200 pages.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Misses
I own two of Rick Rodgers 101 books and have been pleased.I was disappointed in this one however because I am not a cook who uses alcohol in cooking or beverages and that eliminated many of Rick's holiday offerings. It would have been nice to have some non-alcoholic substitutions suggested.I felt that, for me, this book was not worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate planning guide.
Author Rick Rodgers, already the master of all things associated with Thanksgiving has now given us a terrific Christmas/New Year's guide. His practical suggestions include everything from setting up the perfectholiday cocktail party to getting the cards written (you don't really needto do them ALL at one sitting!), to planning for Christmas & NewYear's--both Eve & Day celebrations. The recipes are uncomplicated, and generally use ingredients that are already on-hand.There's lots ofnostalgia here & some great suggestions for music (the Ella FitzgeraldCD is the best!).Christmas set-up in our house has already been smoother& more relaxing because of this book. ... I picked this up thinking that it would primarily be written for Wiccans. It did include several of the charms and spells that I expected, including an intriguing section about making a scrying mirror. What made me buy the book, though, was the other content. It is a great source of historical and cultural information about Halloween.Read more

I enjoy a good holiday cookbook, but I was disappointed with this one. The recipes are a little too plain... The selection not particularly holiday orientated. The pictures are few and far-between...And the recipe titles a bit too generic. Overall, this cookbook left me with a 'Ho Humm' response.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not One of Their Best
I love the first four of these books and have them all, given them for gifts, etc. But, this one for some reason just looks like it was thrown together at the last minute without any thought whatsoever to the designs, crafts, or the recipes. Some of the recipes are repeats from older Christmas cookbooks which I already have and the crafts, well, they're just boring and very basic. The recipes are not that good and normally, they're just incredible.I have to say that I'm extremely disappointed in this book and wish that I had bought the paperback for this one.Even the design layout of the book in general is just boring. There isn't much in the way of color in this one and it is just lacking all the way around.I know that really isn't that important, but when you're trying to do crafts and recipes, I think photos are pretty important.Better try again Gooseberry!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Up to Par
I'm a big fan of Gooseberry patch series, and received my copy in the mail with baited breath. Christmas Book 5 was not as good as others in the series. Why? Mostly because I found some of the crafts rather boring and drab, and nothing anyone might actually want to make... Also, there weren't quite as many recipes, and the ones which were included were mostly desserts. While I like desserts, I think there should be a fair mix of entrees and other snacks included to round out a compilation. Overall, an average book. Not quite up to par, and nothing I see myself using using for anything other than shelf weight to round out my collection. ... Read more
