Thanksgiving: a time for family, friends, and huge platters of savory foodstuffs. Every year you look forward to a slow-roasted turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, and succulent dressing. Sometimes you get it. Other times, the turkey is dry, the dressing overseasoned, and the marshmallow sweet potato casserole gloppy. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Thanksgiving Reference
Holly Garrison's book provides over 300 recipes to make your Thanksgiving feast a sure hit.Believe me...it's VERY hard to break from the traditonal for this once a year meal, but Holly provides some outstanding regional favorites that may not be your tradition yet, but will be if you just give them a try.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Thanksgiving Cookbook by Garrison
This book is an excellent reference for holiday cooking.5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide to Thanksgiving......
I've got several Williams-Sonoma Thanksgiving cookbooks, and always refer to my November back issues of Bon Appetit and Gourmet as well each year. After reading the 1st few chapters of this book, I already know where my ideas are coming from this year. This book is terrific - filled with many recipes the likes of which you won't find elsewhere. The author also gives great food and table decorating tips, as well as what not to do on Thanksgiving. She also has many recipes which can be made ahead of time. One on my list for this year is the Sweet Potato Balls - especially good for kids.Mashed sweet potatoes wrapped around a marshmallow, then rolled in crushed corn flakes and baked. If you are like me, and love planning and cooking for Thanksgiving, get a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Treasure Chest of Traditional, Easy Recipes.
`A Quilter's Christmas Cookbook' by `Good Books' (in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania) editors Louise Stoltzfus and Dawn J. Ranck is a genuine bargain for traditional recipe collectors who keep their magazine cutouts in little `tin' filing cans designed for holding 3" by 5" index cards. I know this because this is exactly how my mother keeps her recipes, and so many of the recipes in this book are the very same she has in her little gray can.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of recipes!
Whether you are a quilter or not, you will love this cookbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adelightful Christmas album
Since both authors are professional photographers, it is to be expected that the photographs in this book are all excellent and many are artistic. I was in a dilemma as to how many stars I should give to rate this book. As a Christmas album it deserves at least five stars. However, as a book about Christmas customs I would only give it three (therefore on average I give it four). 5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, easy and unusual recipes!
I love this book! I received it as a birthday present and, although it is still just over a month til Christmas, I have already made a lot of the recipes in it. There is a photo for each recipe which is always a bonus and the Christmas stories are funny and well-written. The recipes themselves are absolutely delicious! I have just made the allspice ribs, last week I made the gingerbread sponge cake, just so easy to cook and eat! I would recommend this even to those not celebrating Swedish Jul as the recipes are good year round. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to be a better cook?
Cook's Illustrated is a no-nonsense, incredibly detailed, well-written, well-researched, and fussy-about-quality-food magazine written for American home cooks and foodies, not gourmet cooks (although the food you'll end up cooking might qualify as gourmet) or food faddists. The annuals include all of the magazines for that year bound into hardcovers and handily indexed.Quick Tips showcase reader tips for everything under the sun and in the kitchen.Recipes may include everything from making a better pot roast to Indian food.Equipment reviews rank essential (and some not so essential) kitchen tools.5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I have about 3 different cooks illustrated cook books, only this one has a year attached to it"2001"But I have become a better cook by having them.I am leary of buying more as many reviews I've read say repitition is inevibable.I wish I knew of one of their books that had everything in it the way fanny farmers or betty crocker does, I'd buy that in a heart beat. The receipes are delicious and I haven't made a bad meal since getting the books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook/Magazine
I recently discovered Cook's Illustrated through a cookbook given to my husband and I for our wedding. It was their "Best Of.." cookbook. After trying several of their recipes with no failures, I asked for their annual magazine book for Christmas. What a find!I love reading the articles and I love the recipes. The book has all the magazines from 2001 in it, from January - December.I am currently making recipes from the Jaunary/February issue and have not been disaapointed. There is also a lot to be learned about cooking practices in this book. It's a great addition to any cook's kitchen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets
I have been waiting for a cookbook thatknows how to help create meals not just recipes.I haven't the time to search through most cookbooks that offer a main dish in a catagory and then I spend too much time trying to put a meal together that works. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Accidental Gourmet Weekends and Holidays
Am glad to see more receipes from these experienced cooks who understand the organization of tools, ingredients and the roadmap to bring a great meal to table. Was a fan of "A Dinner a Day" and have given it to many young brides. This is a format that skips the pictures and gets to the structure of a putting the parts of a complete dinner together from shopping to presentation. The "fun with puns" titles are a delight and spark dinner discussions to the education and delight of family and guests. Easy to bend book back to computer Scan or machine copy ingredients list for shopping.Love the "Countdown" formula for pulling the meal together.Without a lot of pictures and calorie counts to fill up pages (who doesn't know what a pot roast looks like by now. . .), these experienced chefs have given us hundreds of proven-good receipes between the pages of their efficent layout (practical binding lets it self-stand on counter for easy reference and page turning).Combining things we've tried and like from one menu to another has created even more dinners for my family (great index in back).Hats off to these talented cooks who've done it again. . .hope we see them on Food Network soon.As regards my "buy" recommendation for this wonderful cookbook . ."Thistle Please You" from their aptly-named artichoke receipe, page 187. . .every pun intended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars FOR EXQUISITE MIDNIGHT FEASTS. . .
Authentic Transylvanian recipes, with sprinklings of table decor ideas and serving suggestions a la vampyre. These dishes are wonderful for special occasions, and intimate gatherings. They are presented to the reader as a close facsimile of the type meals such as the Count would have served his "guests" at the castle. The menu items look genuinely mouth wateringtoo...nothing strange or odd for American tastes...! There was not one ingredient specified that I haven't seen at the local supermarket, and these recipes can be prepared without spending big bucks. Your OWN "guests" will be quite impressed. A MUST have cookbook in any Vampyre kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cook's Illustrated, 1999
Combining 1999s' Cooks Illustrated magazine in one volumn; a must if you can wait 1 whole year to read this exceptional magazine. Not "just another cookbook"; but, a great resourse for both beginners andadvanced cooks alike; with detailed instructions on recipes, cooking tips, resourse reviews, test kitchen results, hard to find cooking items. A musthave technique book. And the editorials make great reading. One of myfavorite quotes comes from a 1999 editorial: "Good cooks are mastersof many things, improving and substituting to achieve modest ends. Weshould stand firm in front of the stove, feet planted in knowledge andexperience, not as tourists surrounded by the unfamiliar". That sumsup the importance of having this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious recipes that have become a staple of our holiday
I got this cookbook just before I got married, when I hosted my first Thanksgiving. I've used it for several years now, and many of the recipes in it - including the gingered sweet pototato pudding, the glazed parsnips and carrots, and the pumpkin cheesecake - have become staples of my family's celebration. I haven't tried a single recipe in this book that wasn't utterly delicious. It offers creative twists on traditional holiday fare, so it satisfies both the gourmets and the traditional holiday eaters. It also includes several recipes for "extras" (such as a yummy and very easy recipe for minted cranberry sauce). While some of the recipes take a little extra effort over your traditional mashed potatoes and stuffing, they are very well worth it. Even my husband, whose palette is hardly experimental, loves *everything* I've made from this book. I've now given it as a gift to several of my friends, all of whom have found new recipes to treasure in it! ... Read more
