Get it if you are a dog owner

good advice for dog training
Although I do disagree with some of the punishment techniques suggested in this book( I still haven't read the revised edition), I can still say that this is a great book.Of course this book doesn't replace obedience classes, but it's a great way to start training your dog and learning to communicate with it.I have read it several times and given it to friends who were getting ready to adopt a dog. It has helped me train three dogs, with obedience classes in addition to at home training, of course. It is definitely a classic and a must on any new dog owner's nightstand.

Dogs are NOT furry children
I have had an earlier version of this and have ordered the latest. I have used methods in this book to raise and train four Dobermans and a Great Dane. As others have said, the negative reviews come from people who have not read the book (one admits just flipping through it ina bookstore) or did not absorb what they read or have bought into the notion that dogs are really furry children. You can discipline your dog (or child) physically without being cruel. Sometimes for your safety or the dogs behavior must be corrected immediately. A physical reprimand (smack undeer the chin) is the fastest way to make your point. As others have also noted, there is so much more to this book than just dog training. The monks are kind, compassionate men who have developed an unmatched understanding of dog behavior through years of study and interaction with them and they convey that knowledge in clear, charming prose. Anyone with a dog or planning to get one should own this book.

This cookbook is the best in my collection - and I have a lot!! The instructions are clear and the pictures are great!

Horrible!
I tried her honey-acorn pie and it came out HORRIBLE!!! I had to re-bake the pie for more than 50 minutes and the pie filling is tasteless andtoo salty....her recipes are too tedious and never seem to produce good results...and I'm somebody who bakes a lot. Now, Julia Child on the other hand has some WONDERFUL recipes that NEVER fail!

Pick it up - you'll keep it.
I picked up this book, determined to be a better pet owner. And I'm grateful to the Monks of New Skete for preparing such a thoughtful, educational text for people like me. This is a wonderful book that taught me a lot about my dog, why she acts the way she does, and what I can do about unwanted behavior. From the birth of these loyal, precious animals to testing for temperament, then moving toward training, I've developed a much better understanding of what it means to work with a puppy. Or rather, to train myself. This text is highly recommended for all dog owners, regardless of age, for it contains a wealth of information that should be shared with everyone before bringing home a loving pet such as a dog. Another great book for dog owners that I recommend is "Cesar's Way" by Cesar Millan

Excellent book for the serious dog lover.A great way to prepare for a new puppy.I have read a lot of books but Monks Of New Skete hit every topic on target.You don't have to be a GSD owner to benefit - they address what breed is best for you and shelter rescues.They take you step by step from birth to help you understand puppy's needs and developmental phase.I have bought this book for several people because I think it's a MUST HAVE.

This book specifically talks about German Shepherds but will work for any dog with some intelligence.Read it before you get a dog if you can but if you're like me and you suddenly have a dog and are asking yourself, "now what?" get this book immediately and start reading!It's not very long but it covers everything you need to know.Most important is understanding how to get your dog to respect you.Notice I said respect and not fear.If your dog doesn't respect you or fears you then there's not much chance of actually getting the dog to listen to commands. ... This book has some great recipes, very easy and yet the food tastes very sophisticated.The BBQ chicken and potato salad are the best I've ever had.The only negative is that there aren't many beef or pork options and seems a bit more female oriented but overall a good buy.

This book has it all--so beautiful, great recipes and Ina's friendly voice. I love cookbooks with photos and this is one of the best! All the recipes that I have tried are wonderful. This is one of my favorite books to give as a gift.

The author enthusiastically shares his passion and experience with grape growing and winemaking
This book is clearly written and easy to read. In addition to the educational aspects, the author effortlessly recounts his own home winemaking experience and shares his passion for it. I found the tables and calculations extremely helpful. A lot of attention is paid to describing the technology and chemistry of the homemade wine. However, the author puts even more emphasis on choosing and correctly growing the right grape at the right place and calls it "your single most important decision". That's why the first chapters on the grape varieties and basic viticulture techniques are especially helpful for beginning grape growers. I truly enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it!

I have read a lot about this book so I had to have it. I recently bought a small vineyard in Slovakia and I have tons of local books about winemaking. I am a real newbie and after I read these books I had an idea how to make wine, but that was not enough. I always had tons of questions, which I did not know who to ask. Well Jeff Cox answers them. Beautiful and a good read too!
Of all the Carolyne Roehm books, this set is my favorite.It had some practical gardening tips as well as the flower arrangements and recipes.If you are expecting a gardening "how to" book, this is not the one.However, the books are beautiful and I enjoyed each one.It gave me many ideas for my own home.I will never have a budget that allows me to purchase 12 dozen roses for one display, however, many of her ideas can be implemented on a smaller scale with less expensive florals.The color combinations were inspiring as well as the examples of matching floral displays to the surroundings.If you love flowers and beautiful table scapes, you will love this book.

The Ultimate Gift for the Lover of Beauty
Carolyne Roehm demonstrates her exquisite taste from the very first page of this lavish book.Organized by season, each chapter celebrates the beauty of all sorts of blossoms in stunning arrangements.These arrangements are lush and full and show an artist's mastery of texture and extraordinary combination of color.The photos are reminiscent of the sumptuousness of the movie, The Age of Innocence, with lovely gilded gold, crystal and porcelain containers. The photography truly is breathtaking and includes not only close ups of the bouquets but also glimpses of elegantly set dining tables, gorgeously furnished rooms and spacious gardens.Her prose is poetry, but also practical in the sections on containers, elements of style and basics.A better book on flower arranging couldn't possibly exist.

Incredible photography of the most beautiful flowers
The flowers depicted in this book gave their lives for a truly noble cause and have been honored appropriately by the photographer.Quite simply they were displayed and photographed in the most beautiful fashion possible.Perhaps the key word there is fashion -- Carolyn Roehm has the experience and eye for fashion, having been a former designer, and that experience may be what enabled her to display the flowers in a way that truly does them justice.I coveted this book for a long while, having seen it in a bookstore, and couldn't get it out of my mind.Now that I own it, I consider myself very fortunate indeed.The book is divided into the four seasons.Particularly strong are the photos depicting the flowers prevalent in Fall and Spring.The smoky greens, yellows, oranges, reds, and browns of the Fall months's foliage manage to look festive and lovely despite their representing the waining of life until the Spring.The photos of lilacs and daffodils in the section on Spring make one hopeful for the end of winter and make one realize why all that shivering is eventually worthwhile.I loved this book and recommend it heartily for anyone who loves pretty flowers and doesn't particularly have any special horticultural knowledge. ... Timeless Reference for Gracious Living
This beautifully photographed book is a feast for the eyes and fodder for the creative person.It is NOT a step by step guide on how to wrap a package (although she does devote a couple of pages on how to wrap a basic box which most people know) or tie a bow (she also shows how to tie a basic bow).IT is full of ideas that one can "lift" and make your own with your own materials.

Nothing new, to me anyway. Pictures were beautiful but to someone who hasn't done it before, the instructions aren't enough.

A classic reference
The photographs in this book provide imaginative ideas for gift wrapping and giving that I will go back to again and again. The quality of the book, the personal notes, list of resources for materials, brief easy how-tos, suggestions for materials, and creating computer-generated wrapping paper, are all appealing facets of this gorgeous book.

This is a terrific recipe book...
Gorgeous photos, as most of the previous reviewers have indicated and if you take your time, they can look this way for you too!I have used this recipe book for many occasions/events...Granted, I really enjoy cooking, but have primarily used this book as my source for hosting wedding showers, personal cocktail parties and private family affairs.Most of the individual recipes are easy to prepare and, together, the recipes can be used to offer a substantial meal for many people.Their beautiful presentation absolutely makes for a professional, elegant appearance.A drawback....a lot of the recipes have to be prepared or assembled "day of" or "minute of", which makes it extraordinarily difficult to get multiple plates of food out at the same time, unless you have multiple people helping ...Overall, would recommend for purchase....

We come to expect Martha's books to be perfection. Although this book comes close, and the recipes are certainly gorgeous and inspiring, the layout of the book is a little complicated and smacks of being thrown together in a hurry.

A Sewer's Must-Have
Everyone else has already said it so well... don't spend another moment's hesitation on whether to buy it or not... just buy it!It is absolutely the sewer's bible!And I loved the comment about bringing it with you to the fabric store.I do a lot of fabric and pattern buying online and I have found that I don't complete the purchase without first referring to this book!Okay, 'nuff said!

Great Reference
This is one of my 3 main sewing references. (All 3 by Betzina! The other two are Power Sewing and Fast Fit.) I learned to sew when I was 8. Twenty years later, I've taken it up again, and am very appreciative of these books. This book teaches you which needles, interfacing, seam finishes, threads, hems, presser feet (and more) to use with each type of fabric. This knowledge has greatly reduced my frustration with sewing. (Who knew that the wrong needle could cause so many problems! Not my 8 year old self, that's for sure.)

My mother loved what I made her......
I had this book for a fews years. And wanted try out the patterns. So, I did a eyeglass case with cherries on them.This book is easy to understand & for doing the projects. Buy only a used book
I bought this book through the mail and I wont tell you how much I spent on it.It really does have some interesting facts.A lot of repetitive ideas that can be confusing some times.Some of the tonics and things that I tried made my garden worse.In fact, it burnt some of my plants to the ground!Some of his recipes are confusing.Such as: he recommeds everything in this 20 gallon hose end sprayer.I went to many garden centers and everyone laughed at me.Nobody carries anything that large.that is for a garden the size of Texas!Who are these people that the tonics worked for?Come to my house and help me, then.
