4-0 out of 5 stars another good book from this author
I have many of Mary Emmerling's books. I like the older ones a little better as she used more New England style decorating. Now she has shifted to Southwest which is not very appealing to me. She does present her style well no matter what type of decorating she uses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Emmerling's Romantic Country: Style That's Straight from the Heart
One of her best. The subject resonates with all of us, we want cozy and intimate and practical and affordable ways to achieve such. Her suggestions go straight to the heart. We can all identify with her view of her life now and how important it is to do the small things NOW!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very personal book ...
Mary Emmerling does tell us A LOT about her own life - I felt I was kind of intruding, but she is obviously SOOOOOOO happy with her new husband - and who can begrudge her that? But the photos and the explanations of how things were acquired or made or modified to fit into the very lovely personalized homes - are really priceless! And she goes IN DEPTH into each home - 4 or more pages of writing and gorgeous photos of insides and outsides on each home plus a description of the people who own it.The groupings are very well planned, too - sections on simple cottages progressing to romantic, traditional and some rather elegant places -

4-0 out of 5 stars Hand Piecing with Jinny Beyer
Top quality - which is what you would expect form Jinny Beyer.Top price - which you expect from her too.By time you buy the book, the CD and the tool you are out a bundle of cash that I would rather spend on fabric. But the 3 products compliment each other, the instructions are clear, the tool has the needed markings, the CD shows Ms Beyer in action.I'm slowly getting the hang of it and am pleased with the results. I just wish there was a package with all 3 (at a package price).

5-0 out of 5 stars Actually 10 STARS!! Jinny Beyer is the Best!!(Period)!!
I loved this CD, I had purchasedthe book, which I also loved, and had taped a show where she demonstrated her technique on "Simply Quilts" which was very helpful also. But, with the CD you get to see everything Up Close, and she Demonstrates beautifully, No wonder she Teaches, and is referred to as the Master in Hand Quilting. At first, I fumbled, and felt extremely Awkward in holding the needle and fabric the way she did, but once I started to hold the eye end of my needle against the thimble like she does, with in 2 to 3 hours, I couldn't believe I ACTUALLY STARTED TO "HAND PIECE" JUST LIKE JINNY!! IT WAS LIKE IT "CLICKED" AND I WOULD NEVER, GO BACK TO THE SLOW AND UNEVEN WAY OF HAND PIECING AGAIN!! Also, for the reviewer, who couldn't find the Genesis Quilt Pattern, its right there under Genesis, with Templates and all. As well as all other 8 Lessons. But, I can't stress enough, as long as you keep the eye end of the needle against your thimble and hold the fabric taught at all times as your moving along between those 2 fingers like she demonstrates, you too will be piecing faster and faster, and more accurately! just like Jinny!! with in very little time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice DVD and pattern!
I loved this DVD!It was set up with very clear menu choices on the left, and the videos were wonderful. After reading the previous review, I was concerned that it was going to be complicated or incomplete, but it wasn't at all difficult. The previous reviewer said that she could only find one video and no pattern, but there were several videos in the "How To"video section, and the pattern was listed on the menu on the left as "Genesis Quilt".Very easy, very thorough, and I wish that all were as forthright as this one.I'm going to really enjoy working with this in my class. ... Easy Living is another masterpiece of the master. What can I say? It seems that, as he gets older, he turns more and more easy living himself. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
This book was marvelous. I enjoyed the fact that the book had no strict guidelines about decorating, just a kind of common sense approach. Now, if you are looking for step by step, (which I was) this may not be for you. But give it a try anyway. It may surprise you! ... Read more

I've been quilting for over ten years now, and have run into only two books that were so comprehensive for referencing quilt patterns and name. One was 101 Patchwork Quilt Patterns by Ruby McKim, and The Quilter's Album of Blocks and Borders by Jinny Beyer.

"Try The $50 Dinner Party" by Sally Sampson.Sally's book is super and we used for a very elegant party at our large beautiful home.

This is one of my favorite books on entertaining.I love all of Martha's stuff and this one is one of my favorites.Anyone considering entertaining on any scale should pick this up and read it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book filled with "good things"!
In spite of Martha Stewart's recent troubles, her legacy continues with this splendid book. It is fresh, intelligent and packed full of great tips and ideas for the entertainer who wants to make a splash without spending a fortune. The thing I like about Martha Stewart's approach is her emphasis on simple abundance--the notion that you can achieve good results through creativity and ingenuity. I think those who want to criticize Ms. Stewart should consider how many people she has inspired through this approach to good living! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars not all you see is paper pieced
This is a wonderful book of beautiful projects.However. not all of the blocks are paper pieced. There are some difficult curved seams and a crazy pieced block that are not for the beginner. Also the template on page 44 is too large for the dimensions noted in the directions for finishing the remainder of the basket block. The triangle must be reduced to fit the remainder of the dimensions.I am in the process of finishing the sampler on page 45.Although not extremely difficult, this is not a paper piecing book for the beginner. The patterns are beautiful and except for the problem that I found trying to complete the basket blocks for the sampler, the directions areclear.I will probably make another one of the projects. Her color choices are exquisite. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I did my best but the guests hated the Hors D'Oeuvres
The guests hated the finger food and I would think there are better books on the subject.I am terrified to visit the golf & tennis club after the dinner debacle.Maybe Martha's finger food was well received in Nutley, NJ but in Short Hills it was another story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old Fashioned Type Kitchens
I think the person who reviewed the book as too old, misunderstood the book's intent. The book is about barn kitchens, retro kitchens, cottage kitchens, farm type kitchens.Depends on what you want your kitchen to look like. Not all of us want a light beech modern kitchen that looks sterile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very dated
I didn't know when I ordered this that it was such an old book. It's not that the kitchens are bad but the book and the rooms in it are so dated. I feel that I did not get my money's worth. I assumed that the book would give me some fresher ideas than these. A real disappointment.

I am just starting to quilt and this book has lots of information besides lap quilting. In addition to the templates, there is valuable information about yardage and how to bind quilts. It shows how to add ruffles and howto do saw-toothed and scalloped edges.I especially liked theinformation on how to make continuous binding rather than buying readymade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource
I have thoroughly enjoyed going through this book.I have not been able to try everything, but what I have tried works. The book is written so that it is easy to follow. There are hundreds and hundreds of "recipes" and tips which can be used to remedy any number of situations around the house/yard/garden.The best thing is that most of the ingredients were already in my kitchen cabinet - at least for the things that I've wanted to try so far.I also appreciate that this book provides alternative methods to the use of hazardous chemicals/pesticides.Additionally, this book provides a wonderful offering of recipes for self-care (pampering) such as lotions and tonics, and hair and skin care.Even if you've never even THOUGHT about making your own "stuff," this book will introduce you to any number of concoctions that you can have fun experimenting with.I highly recommend this book... have fun seeing what works for you! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A unique and wonderfully inspiring book
Two reasons to write this review. One is to counteract, or attempt to balance, the negativity of some of the other reader's reviews. The other is to bring to notice this exceptional book. The ideas that atmosphere, air and geographic location can influence color are not novel thoughts - Dutch master painters and the Provence of Van Gogh come to mind. But to apply such theories to the architectural and interior use of color has not been explored by enough people.Donald Kaufman was first an artist - this obviously influences his perception and methods of working with paint. The book is fascinating for the way it balances ethereal ideas with practical suggestions. The power and influence of localized light is described with excellent prose as well as lovingly selected photographs.Alongside such beauty are supremely helpful suggestions for using color and light in your own environment or in the spaces you are creating for others to enjoy.I have all three of Donald Kaufman and Taffy Dahl's books. Now I await a fourth!

5-0 out of 5 stars The World of Color
This and the two related books (Natural Palettes and the Suzanne Butterfield book on palettes based on D. Kaufman colors)should be read attentively by anyone faced withpainting a room.As beautiful as some of the illustrations are, these are NOT coffee table books to browse through. They are full of practical information for painting rooms, including rooms like mine with dark woodwork, hardwood floors, uneven walls, odd-shaped and leaded glass windows, etc.For example -- balancing cool and warm, contrasting or matching color values, using hue to stand up to strong trim, using flat paint to create a soft, smooth wall surface, what to do with dark rooms (Don't paint them white -- the resulting shadows emphasize that they are dark.), the importance of mixing paint colors without using black pigment and the importance of having the full spectrum of pigments in any paint hue, the effect that the color of light in the room will have on the wall color, and much more. The room descriptions are not prescriptions for what one must do but rather examples of the many different effects that can result using fully-pigmented paint of different value, hue, contrasts, etc. under different light conditions. The Butterfield book is a fairly simple presentation."Natural Palettes" and "Color and Light," particularly the latter book, are sophisticated illustrated explanations of the basic "rules" of light and color through some of the myriad possible results.Read these three books with attention and be rewarded with an appreciation of color and light everywhere(in every house, apartment, store, restaurant, office, etc., on the street, the highway, in the sky, city, country -- you won't be able to help it!)Read these books and you will see, know and care about color and light forever. You'll also have no problem painting your rooms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and Illuminating
Beautiful book with great practical advice about how to choose colors for your home.I've gone gaga over Donald Kaufman's paints, and, although they are expensive, they are only a fraction of the price of Martha Stewart's line for Schreuder. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute designs for people with sewing/finishing experience
I'm a relatively new knitter and I bought this book thinking I could make a toy for my nephew. The toys are very cute and come in a variety of easier and more complex styles.
3-0 out of 5 stars spotty information, but very cute designs
The patterns in this book are all knitted in flat pieces, on straight needles (usually US #3 with DK weight yarn). This means that there is a lot of sewing to do to finish them.

I have just finished the ballerina rabbit for my little ballerina's 6th birthday. It came out excellent, and only took a few evenings to make.I substituted yarns with no problem and added buttonholes for buttons because I don't like the ties.Next project from this book will be the dalmation, changed to blue with white spots. It looks like it will tuck very neatly into my 3-yr-old son's arms.A tip: try using leftover matching yarn to stuff knitted animals; that way you won't have to worry about any white stuffing showing through. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Preparation Chapter best part of the book
Debbie Travis' books are a mixed bag. Some of them I really like and some are scarce on steps and details. This book falls into the latter category. The best part of the book to me were the two chapters, "Preparing your Project for Decoration" and "The Professional Touch". These chapters cover repairs of pieces, sanding, stripping, glazes and how to tint glazes, plaster, varnishes, stains, etc. and the best way to apply them for a professional finish.
3-0 out of 5 stars Just not enough
I agree with other reviewers that this book has some great projects, some of which I plan to do, and it gave me some very good ideas. The problem for me is too few pictures and, in some cases, incomplete instructions.
1-0 out of 5 stars Better books on the market than this one.
This book looks good at first glance, but then it falls apart. The nice colored pictures cannot compensate for the poor hints and guidelines in creating the same effects. Also, many of the finished projects were downright ugly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Schematics????
I do wish more of DB's books had diagrams.Schematics are essential for gaining a quick understanding of shape and fit of a pattern. Many of her patterns feature photographs that do not adequately reveal details such as the type of sleeve join.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT,LOVE IT,LOVE IT! So simple, Yet STUNNING DESIGNS
I just LOVE this book.I borrowed it from the library originally and decided to buy it as it has such simple designs that are super fast to knit.My favourite completed project is a little bow-tied bolero jacket which I made in a lovely scarlett red pure wool from Australia. It looks fantastic and gets compliments everytime my daughter wears it.It is a simple stocking and garter stitch pattern which more than rewards you for the minimal time it took to make.I am off on a buying trip tomorrow to buy the yarn to make the littled beaded cardigan in pale blue cashmerino with glass sead beads embroidered on.I have chosen these designs as they were the only ones which went to a size 24-36 months.I will start on some of the newborn sized items as baby gifts next.I have found no mistakes in the instructions thus far as they are simple, clear and concise but I like that you can check on debbie's website and get a complete list of amendments for all her pattern books typos. At least she provides this as many authors dont!!Highly recommended has simple through to more complicated deigns.Happy knitting!!!!

Editorial Review

Good intentions tend to bloom and fade like a perennial: next year, you'll dig up the border by the front walk and install those delphiniums you've always wanted; next year, you'll put up those abundant tomatoes so you can savor them during the depths of winter. To realize those good intentions, try organizing them with fashion designer and author Carolyne Roehm's Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars okay
it had a few good recipes i liked in there overall it was an okay cookbook

5-0 out of 5 stars Consistently great pies and tarts
I've tried at least 7 pies or tarts from this book and found the crusts, contents and compliments consistently excellent.Mom will not return my copy!

4-0 out of 5 stars I've got a long-term relationship with this book
I'm a little bit of an oddball in that I've been making pies and tarts since I was in High School, and basically learned how through this book. The basic recipes for pie and tart crusts and glazes, found at the back ofthe book with step-by-step illustrations, have become indispensablefavorites of mine.Martha is a big advocate of using a food processor toensure that chilled ingredients stay that way, ensuring a tender, flakycrust that's fast and reliable, and I couldn't agree more, especially if,like me, you're working in an unairconditioned kitchen. The recipes forpastry cream and lemon curd are superb.Rather than using specific recipesfor tarts, I usually bake one of the crusts(pate brisee, pate sucree orsucree extra or nut), use the recipe for pastry cream found in the recipefor the blackberry tart, and add my own fresh fruit and one of the glazes.Among the individual recipes, the apple raisin pie is a favorite I makeevery Thanksgiving, the Tarte Tatin is great, and I especially appreciatethe recipes using Italian Prune or Friar plums, available in late August /September, my favorite fruit for pies and tarts.I just ate a PearFrangipane tartlet this weekend, and was pleased to discover there was arecipe for it in this book, and look forward to making my own.One of myonly complaints is that the recipes seemingly all use different-sized andshaped pie and tart tins, with no easy formulas for converting recipes tofit what you're using. Also, there's no recipe for a classic pecan pie. However, this book is a classic Martha Stewart effort, with the beautifulphotographs and consistently high standards that go with that; it certainlyhas stood the test of time in my kitchen. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase
Exactly the book I was looking for - great photos, good hints, clear explanations. A pleasure for the eyes!

3-0 out of 5 stars More a look at a socialite's lifestyle
As is true with all four books in this series, this "notebook"is beautifully photographed.Ms. Roehm's series does not offer much depthin any of the "categories" covered in the book-- gardening, hearth (whatever that is), etc. but does demonstrate her truly beautifuldesign sense, especially in floral arranging. The spiral-bound format, including pockets for the reader's own clippings, and the many blank pagesfor the reader's own notes are more gimmicky than helpful, and take up lotsof space in an already "lightweight" effort.Unlike the MarthaStewart books, against which these are positioned, Ms. Roehm's books do notoffer the detailed "how-to" approach of Ms. Stewart'sexcrutiatingly detailed tomes, but are more a peek into Ms. Roehm'sperfectionist lifestyle, which is very entertaining in itself. With many, many references to her home, affectedly titled "Weatherstone",Ms. Roehm's books are more a "season" in the life of a newlymonied socialite than an expert's teachings. However, all said, Ms.Roehm's text demonstrates a quick wit and a somewhat self-deprecatingstyle, which when combined with the almost desperate desire to impress thereader with the elegance of 'ole "Weatherstone", makes one seeher as a charming, insecure, vulnerable, and very talented woman. The four"notebooks" left me wanting to see more photographs of herexquisite designs, less from her as an "expert", and gave me theimpression that I would like to learn more about her journey post-divorcefrom Henry Kravis, and post-clothing design business. An expert she ain't,but an interesting woman, most certainly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, extravagant photography
I love Fall -- it's my favorite season, so I wanted to love this book.I wasn't disappointed! The photos are sumptuous and gorgeous; the recipes are yummy and inspire thoughts of running straight to the kitchen; and theinformation about the flowers was truly informative. If you love Fall, you'll love this book. ...
