Written clearly and concisely with equally understandable graphic illustrations, this book delivers on its introductory promise--that "you will discover the tricks and techniques for choosing appropriate quilting designs for your quilt tops and how to create your own unique designs."Alex Anderson's chapters on "Choosing Quilting Designs" and "Drawing Quilting Designs" are among the best written on these topics to date.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes, beautiful photos, but NOT quick!
Just like her "Quick Cook" book, the "Menus" book has fabulous photos and recipes that do work, but each RECIPE takes at least a full hour; there is no way one person could do a whole menu in an hour unless he/she had six arms. Also, like the other book, many of the ingredients are hard to find, and almost all of the recipes call for fresh herbs (and you can tell that dried herbs just wouldn't work). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars One of her worst - a cut & paste job
This is old articles from her magazine and the advice was not very good. There are better books.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books for entertaining
Well done and illustrated, these are features from the early days of the magazine.I can personally vouch for the pear bread pudding and the torta di riso--a lot of work but like a lot of things, WELL worth the effort. I don't know if I could do all of those things at once for one activity, especially the wedding at home. But in addition to all the recipes and chapters, it's idea-inspiring.Which is what Martha is all about (that, and the stock market!)

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all occasions
The menus planned in the book are delicious. Each is catagorized under adifferent event or holiday, but I've used them for not so special eventstoo. There are also wonderful decorating and entertaining ideas for allseasons. The paella is wonderful! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Features classic patterns for the entire family
I really admire that this book doesn't try to cram in a "how to knit" chapter in the very beginning. Those hurried instructions never do justice to someone who's never knitted. Therefore, don't buy this book hoping that it will contain a chapter teaching you how to knit, because it doesn't.The patterns start right away, and they are for every member of the family - babies to adults. For babies we are presented with several sweaters, a hat, a dress, booties, and blankets. For children there are patterns for a dress, several sweaters, and a scarf. For adults there are patterns for several sweaters and two bags. While many baby and child patterns can be used for boys and girls, the adult patterns are all for women. All the items are made of cotton, of course, which as such a classic, smooth look.It really adds to the classic, clean, and simple look the items already have as a result of the pattern. My impression of the projects is that they are for an intermediate knitter, and they use all the basic skills:Fair Isle, color, cables, etc. This book is sure to please because all the items are beautiful and there's something here for everyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Beautiful designs! Lots of style for all ages, elegant cables, lace and bobbles. Must see pics! But the women's patterns are all small, nothing larger than 38", which is what my size 3 sister is! Other than that, she again peddles her expensive low yardage yarn line. Worth the price overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I FOUND THIS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST DECORATING BOOKS AROUND.I DO NOT HAVE ALOT OF MONEY BUT WITH THE IDEAS IN THIS BOOK YOU DON'T NEED ALOT OF MONEY -JUST TASTE AND SOME CREATIVE THINKING.IF YOU ARE A YUPPY WITH NO INDIVIDUALITY AND YOU WANT A HOUSE THAT LOOKS LIKE EVERYONE ELSES THAN SKIP THIS ONE.IF YOU WANT A CREATIVE,UNIQUELY BEAUTIFUL HOME AND ARE WILLING TO INVEST SOME TIME IN DECORATING THEN BUY THIS.AND YES THERE IS A SHABBY CHIC AIR TO SOME OF THIS,HOWEVER I THINK IT IS QUITE LOVELY AND VERY TASTEFULL.ONE OF THE BEST DECORATING BOOKS I'VE SEEN. IF YOUR'E A FREE THINKER AND LIKE TO MAKE YOUR OWN THINGS THEN IGNORE SOME OF THOSE REVIEWS.EVEN IF IT'S NOT YOUR'E STYLE THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK.

1-0 out of 5 stars But, this is how my house looks now!
One simple word sums up this book: Yuck!

1-0 out of 5 stars Sticks and stones may not break my bones, but ...
... they make for lousy decorating.I like Mary Emmerling, and enjoyed her "American Country Cottages" book a lot.It was beautifully photographed, with lots of images of comfortable, lovely, livable rooms. But this book is all rusty wires and birds' nests and peeling lead paint, like a house decorated by the witch from "The Blair WitchProject."I recommend Mary Randolph Carter's "AmericanJunk" for a truly charming book about decorating on the cheap. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Super collection of patchwork blocks
This book is not about presenting you with a series of pre-written pattern recipes so that you can make up a quilt without having to do the math. You are presented with a huge collection of beautifully illustrated patchwork blocks and instructions on how to use them to draft your own quilt pattern.Photographs of antique quilts and quilts made by Jinny Beyer are sprinkled throughout the book and will have you itching to get to a quilt shop so that you can get started on a new quilt!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to draft your own patterns in any size!
This is one of my all-time favorite reference books. Jinny Beyer shows you how to take any block and break it into smaller units (4-patch, 9-patch, Mariner's Compass, etc).Instead of "copying" that pattern youadmire in a quilt magazine (in the size THEY give you), you'll learn toenlarge or shrink it to the size YOU want!Every new quilter should learnto draft patterns...and many old quilters need a refresher's course.Thisbook takes the mystery out of the math! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
The pictures are in color and very easy to understand. This is a good book to have for emergencies.

3-0 out of 5 stars A broad overview
As an avid do-it-herselfer, I was intrigued by the title of this book.In an age of sealed assemblies, planned obsolescence, and cheaply built consumer goods, repairing things rather than replacing them has indeed become rarer (and often impossible or prohibitively expensive). The philosophy of this book, then, is admirable: to provide people the help they need to try their own repairs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did They Say Rose Bible?
It would take volumes to cover the multitudes of roses that are out there, but, with a name like "The Rose Bible" I expected more than this book delivered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book
I am an avid gardner and appreciate a book that tantalizes me with new ideas for my garden.Although I already have some 18 roses in my garden, this book has inspired me to create even more space for more roses, and collect some amazing bourbons and antiques that are out there.I originally purchased this book to research new climbers, and found that and more! The photos are captivating, and the author provides a great history on the various species. In addition, I feel like the author does an outstanding job of explaining the positives and negatives of roses he highlights.I have reread the chapter on "Fifty Immortal Roses" numerous times, and can't seem to put this book down.I can't wait to start digging in the dirt. Very inspirational!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner
Make no bones about it, this book is about roses the author enjoys. This is not a bad thing. He gives you a good concise history on roses, introducing you to the various types of roses grown through time. He gives great advise on planting, pruning and maintenance over the year. Then there are the pictures- lots of them, and beautifully photographed. Yes there is a whole chapter on his favorite roses (many of them tried and true) but hundreds more are referred to with photos and text. This is an ejoyable book, fun to flip through, but still has the information a beginner needs to know when choosing roses. ... Read more
